Jimmy Kimmel and ABC are officially in discussions about extending his run on Jimmy Kimmel Live beyond the 2026 to 2027 television season, putting the late night host’s future at the network back in focus.

According to Variety, Kimmel and Disney executives are negotiating over whether he will continue hosting the ABC programme after his current agreement expires. The discussions come days after reports suggested the show could end in 2027, claims ABC previously dismissed as inaccurate and speculative.

Kimmel has hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live since 2003 and has become one of the longest serving figures in American late night television. His current arrangement is unusual compared with the longer contracts that were once common for major late night hosts. In December 2025, ABC confirmed that Kimmel had signed a one year extension keeping him on the network through May 2027.

The decision over what happens after that point comes at a complicated moment for the late night business. CBS ended The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2026, while other established programmes have also been operating under shorter contract arrangements. The changing economics of television have made expensive nightly talk shows increasingly difficult for networks to justify, particularly as younger audiences spend more time consuming entertainment online.

Despite those pressures, Jimmy Kimmel Live has recently delivered stronger ratings. In July, Variety reported that the programme recorded its strongest monthly audience in June, averaging 3.15 million viewers. That represented a 17% increase from May, while its audience among adults aged 18 to 49 also rose sharply. The ratings improvement followed the cancellation of Colbert’s CBS programme, which Kimmel himself jokingly credited for helping his show attract viewers.

Kimmel’s political comedy has also placed the programme at the centre of wider disputes involving ABC, Disney and the Federal Communications Commission. He has remained an outspoken critic of Donald Trump, while recent tensions surrounding political guests have added further scrutiny. Kimmel recently said an interview with Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico would not air on ABC because of concerns involving the FCC’s interpretation of equal time rules. The interview was instead made available online.

Those tensions are particularly significant because Disney is already engaged in a legal dispute with the FCC over regulatory actions involving ABC. The company has argued that the regulator has overstepped its authority and infringed on the network’s First Amendment rights.

Kimmel’s relationship with ABC also came under intense pressure in 2025 when Disney temporarily suspended production of Jimmy Kimmel Live following controversy over comments he made concerning the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The programme returned shortly afterwards, but the episode highlighted the increasingly complicated environment surrounding politically charged late night comedy.

Now, the latest negotiations give both sides an opportunity to decide whether Kimmel’s long running programme remains a priority for ABC. The talks could involve financial considerations, production costs and the changing value of traditional late night television.

For Kimmel, another agreement could allow him to remain behind the desk beyond May 2027, while ABC must weigh the programme’s audience, cultural influence and advertising value against the cost of keeping it on the schedule.

For now, there is no confirmed end date for Jimmy Kimmel Live. ABC has already rejected reports that the programme is definitely ending in 2027, and the existence of active renewal negotiations suggests the decision remains unresolved.
