Jimmy Kimmel’s Latest Retirement Comments Say More About Late Night Than His Future

Jimmy Kimmel has been talking about retirement for years. At this point, the question has become almost as much a part of his late-night career as the monologue, the celebrity interviews, and whatever political fight he happens to be having that week. However, Kimmel’s recent remarks imply that something has shifted. Kimmel might still be uncertain about how much longer he intends to continue hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! Even as he pondered his commitment to the show, however, Kimmel appears to have come to terms with the reason for his continued involvement.

When he appeared with his wife, Molly McNearney, who works as the show’s executive producer and co-head writer, on Dax Shepard’s podcast, Kimmel confessed that he still wonders whether it makes sense to host a show in the first place at the end of a long day. The difference is that Kimmel’s reasoning has evolved since he was confronted with that question.

Kimmel’s explanation is revealing because it has little to do with ambition. After more than two decades on ABC, he hardly needs to prove that he can host a late-night show. Jimmy Kimmel Live! premiered in 2003, making him the longest-tenured host currently working in American late-night. His concern is whether walking away would mean abandoning something that still matters.

He told Shepard that he now feels the show serves as an outlet for people who are outraged by what is happening around them, giving him a “non-financial” reason to continue. Kimmel is essentially describing his show as a platform he feels responsible for using, a significant shift from how he has discussed retirement in the past. Kimmel has repeatedly suggested that he might be approaching the end of his run, only to sign another contract and keep going. His latest deal with Disney runs through May 2027, and even that one-year extension was viewed as a possible final chapter.

Kimmel’s Retirement Problem Is Bigger Than Retirement

Kimmel pointed to other performers who loudly announced their retirements only to return later and attempt to recreate what they had left behind, and he doesn’t want to become one of them. Kimmel can already imagine his younger self looking at him and wondering why he would voluntarily give up a job he once would have been thrilled to have. Still, this doesn’t mean he plans to work forever. In fact, Kimmel was careful to redefine what retirement would even mean for him. He said he is “never going to stop doing things”; leaving Jimmy Kimmel Live! would simply mean doing something else. After 23 seasons, Jimmy Kimmel Live! is the professional identity he has spent most of his adult life building. Walking away would mean giving up the desk, the monologue, and the daily ritual that has defined him for more than two decades.

McNearney’s perspective makes the conflict even clearer because she understands both sides. As Kimmel’s wife and one of the people responsible for making the show every night, she knows exactly what the job costs. She joked about the appeal of having Kimmel retire and spend his days fishing, describing the prospect as better for “the nervous system of the household.” She can see a version of their lives in which he puts the work down and finally relaxes, but she also doesn’t want him to stop.

McNearney said she feels the show’s voice is important right now because viewers feel as though someone is hearing them, which is fundamentally the same argument Kimmel made, only from the perspective of someone observing the show’s effect on its audience. She wants him to rest, but she also believes there is value in his continuing to speak. Retirement would be good for Kimmel the person, though continuing may be important to Kimmel the public figure.

Late Night Has Become Part of Kimmel’s Public Role

This is all especially striking after the upheaval surrounding late night over the past year. Kimmel’s show was temporarily suspended by ABC in September 2025 following comments he made about the killing of Charlie Kirk, only to return six days later. The incident highlighted just how much political commentary on a late-night comedy show can spill over into the real world.

The cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert followed, which Kimmel described as leaving him feeling as though he were looking at his own future. The disappearance of another major late-night institution makes Kimmel’s own position harder to view as routine career planning.

The late-night landscape is changing, and Kimmel knows it. That may explain why his retirement comments now sound less like a man looking for an escape hatch and more like someone trying to determine whether he can walk away responsibly. He may still retire when his contract ends, may decide that the show has said everything it needs to say, or may simply want his time back, but for now, Kimmel has something he didn’t always have when he talked about leaving: a reason to stay.
