Jimmy Kimmel is taking a two-month break from his ABC series.
In his last episode as host he said in his monologue: “I hope you’re paying attention this summer.
“Because I will be taking the next two months off – this time voluntarily.”
The “voluntarily” comment is a nod to his involuntary suspension last year.

Kimmel was pulled off air in 2025 after comments he made about the shooting of Charlie Kirk.
In a monologue, Kimmel said that the “MAGA gang” was: “Desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.”
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr made the decision to suspend Kimmel and commented that he was: “Appearing to directly mislead the American public.”
Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, and Robert De Niro were among those who deemed Kimmel’s suspension a “dark moment for freedom of speech in our nation.”
Disney did eventually reinstate Kimmel, and he returned on September 23, 2025.
His first episode back opened with an emotional response to the controversy: “You understand it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.
“I don’t think there’s anything funny about it. This show is not important.
“What is important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have shows like this.”
When will Jimmy Kimmel return?
There is no set date for Jimmy Kimmel’s return.
His last day of host duties was Thursday, June 18, and it was announced as a two-month break, so he should be back in late August.
Who is hosting while Jimmy Kimmel is away?
With the announcement of Rosie O’Donnell’s guest hosting, Kimmel took a moment to address Donald Trump.
He said: “As a special treat for the Commander in Chief, I asked one of his all-time favorites.
“You’re welcome, and all I ask in return, Mr. President, is that you don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone.”

What is the future for Jimmy Kimmel?
Kimmel has admitted that he is seriously considering retirement.
His contract runs through to May 2027 but after that the future is unclear.
Kimmel’s wife, Molly McNearney, is an executive producer on the show and recently appeared on Dax Shepard‘s Armchair Expert podcast where she discussed stepping away from the show.
She said: “It definitely appeals to me for the nervous system of the household.
“I also feel like Jimmy has like a fly rod in one hand and like a torch in the other right now.
“It is like he deserves to go out there and just be on the river and relax, but I also want him to keep fighting.”
