Later, chemical analysis of the very sample cut and tested in 1988, revealed the presence of cotton fibers.
That alone was a red flag. The main body of the shroud contains no cotton at all. It is made entirely of linen. To disguise the repair, the cotton threads were colored using alizarin dye to blend with the older fabric. And gum arabic was applied as a binding agent.
