 To understand why that distinction matters, you have to understand who the Sumerianss believed Anki actually was and why a god associated so completely with fresh water, with rivers, with the Tigris and Euphrates that gave their entire civilization life would have any reason to reach toward the deepest, saltiest, most hostile body of water on the planet at all.

The Anunnaki, as the tablets across Areridu, Nepur, and Ur describe them, were spoken of in terms that read less like worship and more like institutional memory.  And it was Enki, according to the Atrahesus epic and the later Babylonian elaborations drawn from it, who designed the Lulu Amelu, the primitive worker, the being we would call humanity to relieve the lesser Anunnaki of the burden of digging the irrigation canals with their own hands.  Enki is the architect of human labor. Enki is the god who shaped clay and breathed something into it that made it rise up and dig. But the Bahrain tablet does not concern itself with that creation at all. It begins much later after the flood narrative, after the catastrophe that the Sumerianss called  the Abubu, the deluge that the gods are described as having unleashed and then according to several variant tablets, immediately regretted.

A stretch of time after the flood waters receded when the surviving human population was small, scattered, and according to Enki’s own recorded words on a separate but thematically connected fragment from Nipper, vulnerable to the very gods who had just tried to erase them.

He understood that the council of the Anunnaki, the assembly Sumerian tablets call  the Anunnaki dingar had voted for the flood. He understood that Enlil had wanted humanity gone entirely had seen its rapid growth before the deluge as a violation of the order the Anunnaki meant to maintain.

They described with startling numerical precision the deepest place. And they did it roughly 4,000 years before anyone had a method of confirming that such a depth even existed, let alone measuring it. If Anki placed something there, the why becomes the question that the rest of the tablet and the  parallel fragments that researchers have since connected to it attempt to answer.

 The fifth and sixth lines of the tablet shift away from location entirely and move into motive. And this is where the translation becomes contested, even among researchers who accept the tablet’s authenticity at all. The text describes Enki addressing an unnamed audience. A passage some translators read as directed at the surviving humans of the long silence.

 Others as a message left for a future Anki himself could not have witnessed, but appears by the phrasing to have anticipated. The line reads, “In the most widely accepted rendering, what I have hidden is not hidden from you. It is hidden from those who would take it from you before you are ready to hold it.” That phrase, “Hidden from those who would take it from you,” is the hinge the entire tablet turns on because it implies a target.

 It implies Enki was not simply protecting an object from the ravages of time, from looters, from the ordinary entropy that destroys most things humans bury. He was protecting it from a specific party with both the capability and the motive to seize it. And given everything the wider Sumerian corpus tells us about the relationship between Enki and the rest of the Anunnaki council after the flood, the most consistent answer the tablets point toward is the council led by Enlil.

 The Atraasis epic in its surviving fragments makes the council’s position on humanity explicit. Humanity had grown too numerous. Their noise, a term scholars believe stands for population growth and the strain it placed on whatever systems the Anunnaki used to manage humanity had become intolerable to Enlil.

 The flood was the council’s solution. Enki’s warning to Zeusra was in the framing of these texts an act of defiance against a decision the rest of the council had already made. If humanity’s growth and potential was itself the thing the council found  threatening, then anything Enki built afterward to accelerate that capability would be precisely  the kind of object the council would move to seize and destroy.

This reframes the entire question of what Gishir Anzu actually was, not a weapon. The tablet’s language contains none of the aggressive destructive vocabulary that other Sumerian  texts use when describing instruments of conflict between the gods.
