The Stevens model 77E doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. No Hollywood movies feature it. Books about Vietnam weapons barely mention it. Most people think the Ithaca 37 or Winchester Model 12 were the primary shotguns of the war. They’re wrong. The Stevens Model 77E was the most widely used shotgun in Vietnam with nearly 70,000 units purchased by the US government starting in 1963.
Today, we’re examining why this budget shotgun became the go-to close quarters weapon for military police, convoy guards, tunnel fighters, and infantry pointmen throughout the Vietnam War, and why so few people know about it. The Stevens Model 77E emerged from necessity, not prestige. Early in the Vietnam War, the US military faced a shotgun shortage.
The World War I era Winchester Model 1897 trench guns were worn out. World War II stocks of Winchester Model 12s and Ithaca Model 37s were limited. Demand for close quarters weapons exceeded supply. The Department of Defense needed shotguns immediately and needed them cheap. Stevens Arms Company, a subsidiary of Savage, offered a solution.
The model 77E riot gun, a no frrills pumpaction 12 gauge that could be produced quickly and inexpensively. The contract specifications were straightforward. 20-in barrel, five round tubular magazine capacity, parkerized finish, sling swivels, and most unusually, a shortened stock. The stock reduction wasn’t random cost cutting.
The primary intended recipients were South Vietnamese forces. The ARVN soldiers and village militia defenders were generally smaller statured than American troops. So the 77E stock was cut approximately 1 in shorter than standard American military shotguns. This shortened length of pull, 13 in instead of 14, would later prove accidentally beneficial for American users wearing bulky flack jackets.
But initially it created complaints from US troops who found the shortstock awkward. The first Stevens Model 77E shotguns were delivered on May 24th, 1963. The government contract eventually totaled 69,97 units produced over several years. The cost was remarkably low. Stevens bid $33.51 per shotgun.
To maintain this price point, every penny mattered. The distinctive rubber recoil pad featured a T cutout because Ohio Rubber Company saved 1 cent per pad using that design instead of solid rubber. The Parkerized finish was dull gray, functional but ugly. The wooden stocks and four ends were basic hardwood stained dark brown. No checkering, no fancy finishing, no decorative touches.
This was a utilitarian tool built to a price point. The receiver markings were minimal. US property mark on the right side, P proof marks on receiver and barrel. The left side of the barrel carried the manufacturer information, Stevens/Savage Arms Corporation, Westfield, Mass USA, Model 77E, along with chamber specification.
The distribution pattern showed the shotgun’s dual purpose. According to procurement records, 65,724 of the 69,97 shotguns went to the Republic of Vietnam or other Allied forces. This represented over 95% of total production. The remaining approximately 3,400 shotguns stayed with US forces, but the actual American use exceeded this number significantly because US troops often acquired 77E shotguns from South Vietnamese stocks or from captured weapon stores.
The tactical applications in Vietnam varied widely across different units in situations. Military police units became the primary American users of the Steven 77E. MPs assigned to guard duty at headquarters, ammunition dumps, prisoner of war camps, and other installations carried the 77e as their standard weapon.
The shotgun’s devastating close-range firepower suited static guard positions where engagement distances would be short. Convoy security was another major MP application. Truck convoys moving through villages or areas where ambushes might occur at close range benefited from shotguns immediate stopping power. One documented account from an MP unit described convoy operations through Saigon’s outskirts.
The lead and trail vehicles always had an MP with a Steven 77E riding shotgun literally. When the convoy took small arms fire from buildings at close range, the OO buckshot loads could suppress multiple firing positions with fewer shots than rifles required. Saigon itself saw extensive 77E use among patrol MPs. The urban environment with its crowded streets, buildings, and close quarters made shotguns more practical than rifles for many situations.
MPs conducting checkpoints or foot patrols often carried the Stevens. The Tet offensive in 1968 demonstrated the shotgun’s value in urban combat. When Vietkong fighters infiltrated cities and fighting moved into buildings, the 77E and other shotguns became invaluable for clearing rooms and engaging enemy forces at buildingto-building distances.
Infantry applications focused on specific high-risk roles. Pointmen, the soldiers walking ahead of patrols to detect enemy presence, sometimes carried the 77E instead of rifles. The logic was that point men’s first contact with enemy forces would almost certainly be at extremely close range in jungle where visibility might be measured in feet.
A blast of double O buckshot at 10 ft was more immediately effective than rifle fire. The spread pattern meant precise aiming wasn’t critical in the split-second encounter. Typical of point walking combat, the shotgun’s advantages mattered. However, many pointmen hated carrying shotguns for the same reasons. Beyond the initial encounter distance, the shotgun became useless.
If contact developed into a longer range firefight, the point man was essentially disarmed. The five round capacity was woefully inadequate compared to a rifle’s magazine capacity. Tunnel warfare presented situations where the 77E excelled. The Vietkong tunnel systems were extensive, particularly around Coochi and other areas.
American tunnel rats who explored these underground networks faced combat at arms length in darkness. Some tunnel rats carried the Steven 77E into tunnels despite the confined spaces making any long gun awkward. The shotgun could be fired one-handed if necessary, and at tunnel distances, the buckshot pattern would fill the entire passage with.
More commonly, tunnel rats carried pistols underground, but had Steven 77E shotguns staged at tunnel entrances for extraction security. If enemies pursued tunnel rats to the surface, the waiting shotgun provided devastating defensive fire. Bunker clearing operations utilized shotguns extensively. Viet vegetation and terrain allowed construction of heavily fortified bunkers.
Assaulting these positions required getting close enough to eliminate defenders, often by throwing grenades into firing ports or approaching the entrance. Soldiers assigned to bunker assault details sometimes carried 77E shotguns to suppress enemy fire during the final approach. The psychological impact of buckshot blasting into a bunker’s firing port often caused defenders to cease firing momentarily, allowing attackers to close distance.
The ammunition types available evolved during the war. Early in the conflict, M19 brasscased o buckshot loads left over from World War II remained in supply. These vintage rounds were generally reliable, but stocks eventually depleted. The XM1 162 became the standard double O buckshot load for most of the war. Each 2 and 3/4 in shell contained 9.
33 caliber lead pellets. At close range, the pattern was tight enough for effective aimed fire. Beyond 15 yd, the spread increased rapidly. The XM257 number four buckshot offered an alternative with more but smaller pellets, 27.24 24 caliber pellets per shell. The denser pattern provided better hit probability at slightly longer ranges, but with reduced individual pellet energy.
Choosing between the two loads became a practical consideration. MPs on convoy duty often preferred double o buckshot for maximum stopping power at close range. Infantry in jungle, where ranges were uncertain, sometimes chose number four buckshot for the wider pattern. The operational problems with the Steven 77E were significant despite its widespread use.
The durability issues became apparent quickly. Unlike the Ithaca Model 37 or Winchester Model 12, expensive precision manufactured shotguns built to last, the Stevens 77E was a budget gun that showed its limitations under combat conditions. The receiver to stock attachment was particularly weak.
The junction where the wooden stock joined the steel receiver failed regularly under hard use. Soldiers dropping weapons, using stocks as prying tools, or simply the repeated shock of firing caused stocks to crack or break at this connection point. Field reports documented numerous instances of Steven’s 77E shotguns with broken stocks requiring replacement or being rendered unserviceable.
The repair process involved either replacing the entire stock assembly or more commonly simply replacing the broken shotgun with another from available stocks. The action itself was functional but not particularly smooth. The pump stroke required more effort than higher quality shotguns. Under stress, soldiers sometimes short stroked the action, not pulling the fore end fully rearward before pushing forward, causing feeding failures.
The magazine tube capacity was only five rounds, including the chamber. In any sustained engagement, the 77E ran dry frighteningly fast. Reloading required individual shells to be inserted one at a time through the loading port, a slow process under combat conditions. The shorter stock created problems for American troops despite the incidental flack jacket benefit.
Taller soldiers or those with longer arms found the 13-inch length of pull uncomfortable. Proper shotgun shooting technique requires the stock to fit the shooter’s build. The shortened 77E didn’t fit many Americans well. The recoil with the short stock was noticeably sharper than standard length shotguns. The reduced leverage and different stock geometry transferred more felt recoil to the shooter’s shoulder.
After firing multiple rounds in practice or combat, bruising was common. Some soldiers attempted to modify stocks by adding spacers or makeshift extensions, but these field modifications often made the durability problems worse by weakening the already suspect receiver stock junction. The comparison to other Vietnam shotguns highlighted the Steven 77E’s strengths and weaknesses.
The postVietnam fate of the Model 77E explains why they’re rare today despite massive production numbers. When American forces withdrew from Vietnam, most Stevens 77E shotguns stayed behind. Unlike earlier military weapons that returned to the United States and were eventually sold as surplus, the 77E shotguns were considered low value items not worth shipping home.
The few thousand that did return to US inventory weren’t sold to civilian markets. Instead, the Department of Defense distributed them to police departments and other law enforcement agencies. These law enforcement 77E shotguns often received additional markings. agency identifications, inventory numbers, and other stampings.
When these agencies eventually replaced the aging Stevens shotguns decades later, some entered the civilian market through police tradeins. The result is that genuine Vietnam era Stevens Model 77E shotguns are actually quite rare in the American collector market. Estimates suggest only a few thousand exist in private hands despite nearly 70,000 being produced.
Collectors who specialize in Vietnam war weapons or military shotguns prize the 77e for its historical significance. Examples in good condition with clear US military markings command prices from $800 to over $2,000 depending on condition and provenence. The irony is stark. The most used shotgun of the Vietnam War is now among the hardest to find.
The veteran perspectives on the Stevens 77E range from appreciation to disdain. MPs who carried the 77E on guard duty or convoy escort generally viewed it positively. For their specific mission, static defense or close-range engagement from vehicles. The shotgun’s limitations didn’t matter much. The immediate stopping power and simplicity of operations suited their needs.
Infantry soldiers who’d been issued the 77E for point duty or bunker work had more mixed opinions. The weapon’s effectiveness in its intended role was undeniable, but the short stock, limited capacity, and durability issues created frustration. One veteran account described the 77E as the gun you wanted when you needed it and cursed when you had to carry it.
The comment captured the essential contradiction. Devastatingly effective in specific situations, but a burden and liability in others. Tunnel rats who used the Stevens underground praised its compact length and powerful close-range performance. In the unique environment of tunnel warfare, the 77E’s weaknesses didn’t apply and its strengths were maximized.
The reality that most Stevens 77E shotguns were issued to South Vietnamese forces rather than Americans means much of the combat history remains poorly documented. ARVN units and village defense forces that received the 77E left fewer English language records of its use. What is known suggests the Vietnamese troops had the same mixed experiences.
The shortened stock actually fit Vietnamese soldiers well, solving one problem American users faced. But the durability issues affected Vietnamese users equally, and the ammunition supply for shotguns was sometimes inconsistent. The tactical doctrine for shotgun employment that developed during Vietnam incorporated lessons from the 77E experience.
The effective range limitation, approximately 50 m maximum, realistically 25 m or less, meant shotguns couldn’t be primary weapons for most infantry roles. They excelled as specialized tools for specific situations. The ammunition capacity constraint required soldiers carrying shotguns to operate with riflemen nearby who could provide sustained fire if engagements developed beyond shotgun range.
The durability concerns emphasize the need for weapons that could withstand combat abuse. Future military shotgun procurements would prioritize robust construction over lowest cost. These lessons influenced the eventual adoption of the Mosberg 500 series and later the Benelli M4 as military combat shotguns. weapons that balanced cost with durability and featured design improvements addressing problems identified with Vietnam era shotguns, including the Stevens 77E.
The obscurity of the Stevens Model 77E compared to other Vietnam weapons reflects several factors. The shotgun wasn’t glamorous. It didn’t have the mystique of the M16’s space age design or the AK-47’s revolutionary reputation. It was a cheap pump shotgun built to fill an immediate need. The shotgun wasn’t controversial.
Unlike the early M16 with its jamming problems that generated congressional investigations or the M60 machine gun that pilots called the pig, the 77E just quietly did its job without generating headlines. The shotgun didn’t come home. With most examples staying in Vietnam, veterans couldn’t bring them back as personal keepsakes.
The physical absence reinforced the historical invisibility. The Hollywood factor matters, too. Movies about Vietnam feature M16s, M60s, helicopters, and dramatic weaponry. Shotguns appear occasionally, but rarely prominently. The Stevens 77E has never been a movie star. The collectors and historians who document military weapons have focused more attention on rare or prestigious firearms than on the cheap mass-roduced shotgun that actually saw the most use.
The Stevens Model 77E represents something important about the Vietnam War beyond its specific tactical role. This was a war fought largely by workingclass soldiers carrying budget equipment. The expensive precision weapons went to elite units in limited numbers. The mass of soldiers made do with whatever was available and affordable.
The 77E epitomized this reality. It wasn’t the best shotgun. It was the cheapest shotgun available in the quantities needed. It worked well enough for the mission despite its flaws. Soldiers adapted to its limitations because they had no alternative. This practical, unglamorous reality of Vietnam, making do with imperfect tools, adapting to circumstances, getting the job done despite less than ideal equipment, deserves recognition alongside the more dramatic narratives.
