Vietnam’s TERRIBLE Night Shift Conditions of a Grunt!

Two men sit in mud 50 yards outside the firebase perimeter. It is absolutely dark, not dim, not shadowy. The triple canopy jungle above them has absorbed every photon of moonlight and starlight and returned nothing. One of them is holding a field telephone handset so tightly his knuckles have gone numb.

 The other is sitting perfectly still with a mosquito working on the side of his neck that he is not going to slap because the sound of a hand hitting skin carries in still jungle air and there is something out there. The jungle sound wall had dropped 3 minutes ago. The cicadas had stopped. He clicks the handset twice. All clear.

It is not all clear, but what he heard wasn’t enough to be certain and certainty is the threshold for the three clicks that bring the firebase to full alert and possibly brings fire down on a position that turned out to be a wild pig. He sits still and lets the mosquito feed and watches darkness that shows him nothing.

 Today, we’re examining what the night shift actually was for Vietnam War combat infantry. The equipment that was supposed to make darkness survivable and frequently made it worse. The pharmaceutical interventions that kept exhausted men awake and made their exhausted brains see things that weren’t there. The specific physical tortures of sitting motionless in jungle darkness while the environment attacked and the enemy moved.

 And the tactical cat and mouse around claymore mines that made surviving the night only the first half of the problem. The starlight scope was the military’s answer to the darkness problem and it was simultaneously a genuine technological advance and a physical disaster to actually use. The AN/PVS-2 was a generation one image intensifier, a device that amplified available ambient light rather than generating its own.

Moonlight, starlight, the faint atmospheric glow of a clouded sky, whatever photons were present in the environment, the scope gathered and amplified them through a phosphor screen into something the human eye could process. It didn’t create light, it borrowed what existed and magnified it into visibility. The visual result was a green, swimming image that gave soldiers something to look at in complete darkness.

This was genuinely revolutionary in combat terms. Looking through the scope at a jungle that was black to the naked eye revealed shapes, movement, and spatial information that the unaided eye couldn’t access. What it didn’t reveal was depth. The phosphor screen of a generation one device produced a fundamentally flat image where a bush 10 ft away was visually indistinguishable from a man 50 ft away if they occupied similar positions in the visual field.

The image intensification that made the scope valuable simultaneously destroyed the depth perception that made the information usable. A soldier looking through the starlight scope at something moving in the jungle couldn’t reliably determine whether what he was seeing was a threat at immediate range or foliage movement at safe distance.

The scope weighed nearly 6 lb with its battery pack. An M-16 loaded and ready weighed approximately 7 and 1/2 lb. Mounting a 6-lb optical device on a 7 and 1/2 lb rifle didn’t merely add weight, it completely redistributed the weapon’s balance forward in a way that made the weapon unwieldy for anyone who had trained on the unmodified M-16.

Holding the scope-mounted rifle at the ready for hours of guard duty produced arm and shoulder fatigue that degraded accuracy precisely when accuracy might be needed most. The electronic signature was its own problem. The internal oscillator and power supply that drove the image intensification produced a faint but consistent high-pitched whine when the scope was active.

 To the user, the whine sounded deafening in the absolute silence of a night position, a manufactured noise in an environment where natural sound carried with perfect clarity, and where every unnatural sound [clears throat] was potentially a position-revealing signal. Veterans described the specific anxiety of running the starlight scope as a compound experience, looking at a green swirling image that might be showing you an enemy combatant or might be showing you a fern, while generating an electronic noise that you couldn’t turn off without losing the scope’s function,

and that you were certain could be heard by whoever was in that green swirling image. The Claymore setup that preceded nightfall was its own specific ritual of tension. Before darkness fell, grunts crawled out from their fighting positions to emplace the M18A1 Claymores in the ground in front of the perimeter.

The mine was a curved green plastic housing about the size of a thick hardcover book packed with C4 explosive layered behind approximately 700 steel ball bearings. The convex face of the mine was embossed with the instruction front toward enemy in raised lettering. When detonated, the C4 drove the steel balls forward in a fan-shaped pattern that was lethal within roughly 50 m and dangerous well beyond that.

The wire running from the mine back to the fighting position was thin detonation cord connected at the fighting hole end to the M57 firing device, the clacker in universal grunt terminology. The clacker was a handheld squeeze generator that produced the electrical charge to fire the blasting cap. Squeezing it once was the test signal that veterans performed carefully with the safety bail engaged.

 Squeezing it with the safety bail removed and the Claymore properly wired was detonation. Through a night guard shift, a sat with the clacker in his hand, not beside him, in his hand. Fingers wrapped around it, safety bail position known by feel without looking. The grip became unconscious over hours of the same position in the same darkness.

Veterans described the clacker as the one object that provided a specific kind of psychological anchor during night duty. The knowledge that whatever came out of the darkness towards them, there was a physical response immediately available that required only the squeeze of a hand.

 The listening post, the LP, was the night’s most psychologically demanding assignment and the one that produced veteran accounts with a specific quality of memory that other duties didn’t match. Two men took a spool of WD1 communications wire and walked it out past the perimeter wire into the jungle darkness, 50 to 100 yards, far enough to provide advance warning of enemy movement approaching the perimeter.

Close enough that if the LP was discovered and the enemy engaged it, the firebase could respond before the two men in the LP were overrun. The TA-312 field telephone replaced radio communication for LP duty because radio communication was impossible. The PRC-25 and PRC-77 radios that served as standard communication equipment produced a loud squelch hiss when a transmission ended, an unavoidable electronic signature of the radio’s operation that in a quiet jungle night at 50 yards from a concealed enemy position was a death

sentence delivered in sound. The field telephone used a direct wire connection between handsets allowing communication through a closed electrical circuit without any electromagnetic emission or audible broadcast. The communication protocol that developed was a coded click system using the handset’s push-to-talk button.

Squeeze it briefly and the circuit closed and opened. A single mechanical click transmitted through the wire. No voice, no radio hiss, no sound that carried beyond the wire itself. Specific click combinations meant specific things established before going out. Two clicks for all clear, three for movement detected, one for response confirmation.

 The entire tactical information exchange between the LP and the perimeter was conducted through brief patterns of electrical pulses. Sitting in the mud 50 yards outside the wire in complete darkness, communicating by clicking a telephone handset, waiting for the sound wall to drop and the three click decision to become necessary, veterans who served LP duty describe it with a flatness of affect that reflects either the extent of dissociation required to perform it repeatedly or the thoroughness with which it was processed afterward. Sometimes both.

The mosquito problem that attended every night operation represented a genuine tactical dilemma with no adequate resolution. The standard issue insect repellent was 75% DEET concentration in small plastic bottles, a chemical concentration strong enough that it dissolved certain synthetic materials and produced a distinctive smell that was detectable at significant range in still air.

The scent of American military chemical presence in a jungle environment that had its own distinct organic smell was specific and recognizable to fighters who knew what they were looking for. A soldier who used the bug juice at night was potentially advertising his position to exactly the threat he was deployed to detect.

A soldier who didn’t use it sat in clouds of malaria-carrying mosquitoes for his entire shift duration, accepting the certain biological consequences of sustained insect exposure in exchange for the tactical benefit of not smelling like DEET. A hand impacting skin in quiet jungle darkness produces a sharp, distinct crack that carries cleanly through still air.

The reflex to slap an insect on the neck or face is deeply involuntary, a neurological response that operates faster than conscious override. Veterans on LP duty developed the specific discipline of catching the slap reflex before contact, converting what the nervous system intended as a strike into a pressing motion that killed the mosquito against the skin without the sound of impact.

This conversion required learning to interrupt an action that the nervous system was initiating below conscious awareness. Men who failed to develop this discipline quickly enough either gave away positions or learned it the hard way after a close call. The Dexedrine that medics distributed for extended night operations and long-range patrols addressed the sleep deprivation problem by chemically overriding it, and the chemistry that accomplished this also produced consequences that the sleep deprivation alone didn’t.

Dextroamphetamine kept men awake by suppressing the neurological signals that produce sleep onset while simultaneously elevating arousal, heart rate, and sensory processing. In the context of night guard duty, it produced soldiers who were awake when they otherwise would have been unable to stay awake.

 In the context of a jungle darkness where threat detection was the primary cognitive task, it produced soldiers whose sensory processing was chemically elevated beyond normal parameters in an environment that provided ambiguous and limited sensory information. The shadows in a jungle at night move. The wind in vegetation produces visual patterns that the human visual system interprets as motion.

The mad minute that resulted when one sleep-deprived, Dexedrine-elevated soldier fired at a shadow he had determined was moving, and every other soldier on the line responded to his fire with their own, was a documented pattern rather than an aberration. The entire perimeter would open up with M-16s, M-60 machine guns, and whatever else was available, firing into darkness at nothing, burning through hundreds of rounds in seconds, revealing the perimeter’s exact positions and weapon locations to any enemy that was actually

in the tree line. In the morning, after the mad minute’s noise had settled and the ammunition had been tallied, the after-action review would find no enemy contact, no confirmed targets, no evidence of threat. And the men on the perimeter would understand that the night had defeated them not through enemy action, but through the specific chemistry of what keeping 19-year-olds awake on drugs in complete darkness while threatening them produces when the darkness and the drugs and the threat interact in the human brain.

The enemy that the night shift produced wasn’t always human. The bamboo viper was the specific reptilian threat that veterans mentioned with a frequency and specificity that communicates genuine encounter rather than generalized jungle fear. The snake was small, rarely exceeding 2 ft, which made it simultaneously more dangerous and more terrifying than larger species.

 Large snakes are detectable. The bamboo viper was the color and texture of the vegetation it inhabited, motionless until it wasn’t, capable of positioning itself at exactly the height of a man’s hand when that hand was reaching for a vine in the darkness or shifting position on a fighting line without looking at what was beneath it.

The bite was hemotoxic, not immediately fatal in most cases, but producing enough tissue damage and systemic reaction that a bitten soldier required medical evacuation, which meant movement, noise, light, and the complete compromise of whatever tactical position the squad had established. Getting bitten by a bamboo viper on a night ambush didn’t just injure one man, it potentially revealed the entire unit’s position at the worst possible moment.

The centipedes that operated at night were large enough that veterans rarely described them without specifying size. The sting delivered venom that caused intense local pain and swelling, not life-threatening, sufficient to make a man move reflexively and sharply and produce exactly the kind of sound and motion that the night position existed specifically to avoid.

Wild boar moved through the jungle in darkness with a disregard for noise discipline that no amount of tactical training could replicate. A sounder of hogs pushing through undergrowth 50 yards from an LP position produced exactly the sounds that the LP was deployed to detect. The Indochinese tigers’ territory overlapped substantially with the operational areas of both American and Vietnamese forces, and the cats moved at night through the same terrain that soldiers were trying to hold.

All of these encounters, the viper on the fighting position, the centipede crossing a hand, the hogs that sounded like a platoon, the tiger whose passage the jungle announced and then closed behind, accumulated into a specific quality of sustained dread that distinguished night operations in Vietnam’s jungle from anything that training had prepared soldiers for.

The human enemy was anticipated. The environment as active hostile participant was something that had to be learned in place. You couldn’t do anything about any of it except sit still, stay quiet, and keep your hand on the clacker. The night shift ended at first light. The LP men clicked their all clear, retrieved their comms wire, and walked back through the wire having survived another rotation outside the perimeter.

The claymores came in with the tactile confirmation of the raised lettering checked before every retrieval. The starlight scope came off the rifle and its whine stopped. The clacker went back on safe. The day shift began and the night shift men went to whatever sleep the firebase allowed, which was not enough.

 And in 18 to 24 hours, the whole architecture of night would be reassembled and the darkness would come back down.
