How One Homeless Woman’s “Stupid” Heat Trick Kept Her Warm Through 9 Wisconsin Winters 

On the night of January 30th, 2019, a thermometer mounted on a fire hydrant at 16th and Vliet in Milwaukee read 22° below zero. The wind chill was 53 below. Exposed skin would freeze in under 10 minutes. That same night, in a small town called Menomonie, 2 hours northwest, a weather station logged a wind chill of 60 below, the coldest ever recorded anywhere in the state of Wisconsin.

 And 3 ft from that fire hydrant, behind a dumpster, inside what looked to everyone who passed it like a pile of garbage, a 45-year-old woman was sleeping at 73°. Her core temperature was normal. Her feet were warm. She hadn’t shivered in 4 hours. She would wake at 6:45 the next morning, fold her shelter into a duffel bag, and walk 11 blocks to a library that opened at 9:00.

Her name was Annalee Laux so. She had been homeless for 2 and 1/2 winters. And what she was doing inside that pile of trash was, by any reasonable measure, some of the most elegant improvised engineering happening in the Midwest that night. It just looked stupid. That’s the thing people kept getting wrong. For 9 winters, every person who walked past Annalee’s sleeping spot saw junk.

They saw crinkled foil, a jumbled stack of cardboard, a woman sleeping next to what appeared to be a laundry detergent bottle, and they made assumptions about her mind. A pair of college students once laughed about her on a podcast. A shelter worker called her setup a mess. A beat cop shook his head one evening and told his partner she was going to freeze to death one of these nights.

She didn’t. Nine winters came and went. A polar vortex that shut down the University of Wisconsin, a Christmas blizzard that killed 100 people across the country, a February so warm that Kenosha had 77° and Wisconsin had its first recorded winter tornadoes. Annalee slept outside through all of it.

 She wasn’t lucky, and she wasn’t especially tough. She was something the Milwaukee Rescue Mission staff only eventually figured out. She was an engineer. She just didn’t know she was one. And the thing she had built, the stupid-looking thing, the thing that looked like trash, was, when you finally understood what was going on inside it, a cross between an Inuit igloo, a Mongolian yurt, and a Japanese heated table, built from a $1.

50 a week in an alley by a woman who had failed high school chemistry. This is the story of how she got there. Before we meet her properly, we need to talk about the thing everyone has heard of, because for a while, that was what she tried first, and it almost killed her. You have probably seen it on the internet.

 A clay flowerpot, four tea lights, a metal baking tray, maybe a second smaller flowerpot nested inside the first. Somebody posts a video every autumn claiming that for $3 you can heat a room. The comment section fills up. People share it on Facebook with captions about genius, about passing it along, about how it could save a life. It does not heat a room.

 And the physics matters, because the physics is the whole point of this story. A tea light burns at roughly 30 to 40 W of thermal output. Four tea lights together produce about 140 W, less less than the heat from an incandescent bulb your grandmother used to read by. A clay pot placed over the candles does not create heat. It cannot create heat.

 Nothing can create heat, because heat is energy and energy can’t be manufactured out of nothing. What the clay pot does is redistribute the heat. It absorbs infrared radiation from the flames and re-emits it from a warm terracotta surface at a slightly gentler frequency. The room is not warmer. Your hand held near the pot feels warmer.

 There is a difference. And if you try to use the contraption inside a sealed shelter, the candles consume the oxygen, produce carbon monoxide, and kill you in your sleep. Annalee did not know any of this in November of 2016. What she knew was that her marriage had ended 6 weeks earlier with a black eye and a $46 bill from a gas station in Marshfield, and that the Bolton Refuge House in Eau Claire had a 30-day limit, and that the 30 days were up, and that she was sleeping in her 2003 Buick LeSabre in a Walmart parking lot on the

west side of the city, and that the overnight temperature had just dropped to 6°. She had seen the flowerpot video on a library computer that afternoon. She spent four of her $46 on tea lights and one on a stolen metal pie tin from the dollar store, set the whole apparatus on the passenger seat of the Buick, and lit the candles.

 Within 10 minutes, the inside of the windshield was fogged and dripping. Within 20, the car smelled like a church. Within 40, she had a headache so bad she couldn’t see, and she climbed out into 6° air in a Carhartt jacket and threw up next to the front tire. That was her first lesson in thermodynamics. She didn’t call it thermodynamics.

 She called it the candle thing doesn’t work. This is where the story would end in most versions. This is where the woman in the Walmart parking lot, having failed at the viral TikTok trick, would quietly freeze to death in February and become a sentence in a medical examiner’s report. That is the ending the statistics predict.

 Wisconsin averages 60 cold-related deaths every winter. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner logged five hypothermia deaths in the last 17 days of 2024 alone. Three of them were homeless. The oldest was 82. The Annalee-shaped outcome, the one where she lives through nine winters outside, is not the statistically expected outcome.

 It is the vanishingly rare one. And the reason it happened, the reason there is a story to tell at all, is that Annalee Laux so, sitting in a Buick that smelled like vomit and beeswax, did something most people never do. She asked why. Why didn’t it work? What was the candle actually doing? And if 140 W of candle couldn’t keep a Buick warm, how much heat was she herself producing just by being alive? And where was that heat going? She didn’t know the answers yet, but she had found the right question.

 And the right question asked in an alley at 6°, is the difference between a medical examiner’s report and the story you were about to hear. She learned three things that first winter, and all three of them hurt. She learned that her body at rest produces about 80 W of heat. She didn’t know the number.

 What she knew was that if she wrapped herself tight enough and sealed the edges and didn’t move, she got warmer. And if she spread out, she got cold. Somewhere in the space between those two observations is the entire field of thermal physics, but she didn’t need the field. She needed the rule. Small is warm. Big is cold.

 She learned that the ground was trying to kill her. She had been sleeping on the back seat of the Buick directly on the upholstery. The upholstery was over a steel floor pan. The steel floor pan was 8 in above frozen Wisconsin asphalt. Every night, through that stack, her body heat was pouring down into the planet like water through a sieve.

 She’d wake up with her back numb and her front warm and couldn’t figure out why until a woman at the Marshfield library, a retired nurse named Doreen, said, “Honey, the cold ground is more dangerous than the cold air. You need something under you.” Doreen was right, and the physics is beautiful. Cold air moves. Molecules bounce around and transfer heat by convection.

 And if you hold still, a thin layer of warm air forms around your body like a second skin. Cold concrete doesn’t move. Cold concrete is in direct contact with you, and it pulls heat out of you by conduction, a mechanism that can be, for wet or saturated surfaces, about 25 times faster than air. You lose more heat lying on cold ground for for an hour.

 That’s why Doreen said what she said next, which was the third thing Annalee learned that winter. Get some cardboard. Every grocery store in America throws out cardboard every night. Behind the Quick Trip on Central Avenue in Marshfield, Annalee Laux so, age 43, former dairy farm partner, broke down a wine bottle shipping box at 11:00 p.m.

on a Tuesday and laid the flattened pieces in the back of her Buick. Four layers. She slept on them, and she slept warmer. She didn’t know that cardboard has an insulation value of roughly 3 per inch, meaning four layers of it created a thermal resistance close to a sheet of residential fiberglass. She didn’t know that the corrugated air pockets inside cardboard are what make it work.

 Trapped still air is one of the best insulators on Earth, which is why down jackets are fluffy and thermos flasks are hollow. She didn’t know any of this. She just knew she slept warmer, and so she started collecting cardboard. That was the winter of 2016 to 2017. She did not die. She also did not thrive. She lost 14 lb. She got frostbite on two toes of her left foot that would ache for the rest of her life.

By March, she was down to $22 and one pair of dry socks. But she had started learning the quiet arithmetic. The Buick died in October of the following year. A head gasket, $1,200 to fix, which was $1,200 she did not have. And so the Buick went to the impound lot, and Annalee went to Milwaukee, because someone at the Marshfield soup kitchen had told her Milwaukee had more shelters. Milwaukee had more shelters.

Milwaukee also had more homeless people. The shelters ran at capacity most nights and almost all of them had rules she couldn’t keep. The Milwaukee Rescue Mission required you to show up by 6:15 p.m. which she couldn’t always do. The Salvation Army emergency lodge required you to save 80% of any income which she didn’t have.

The guest house was men only. The Cathedral Center for women had a waiting list. Repairs of the Breach on West Vliet was a day shelter that only opened as an overnight when the forecast dropped below 20. Most nights that fall she slept in the stairwell of an abandoned warehouse in the Menomonee Valley. On cardboard.

On December 27th, 2017, a mass of arctic air descended on Wisconsin that would not leave for 11 days. Milwaukee didn’t get above zero for the entire stretch. Madison dropped to 17 below. Eau Claire hit 24 below. This wasn’t a polar vortex yet. That would come later. This was just winter being winter, the ordinary kind of Wisconsin cold the locals were used to and that killed the unhoused in single-digit numbers every year without making the news.

 On night three of the 11, a woman in a mobile outreach van pulled up next to the stairwell and rolled down her window. Her name was Eva. She was from a group called Street Angels. She had hot chocolate, dry socks, and a pile of something that looked, at a glance, like crumpled aluminum foil. “Mylar blankets,” Eva said, “shiny side toward you.

Body heat bounces off it and comes back.” Annelise took one. She had no idea what Mylar was. Here is what Mylar is. In 1964, at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, engineers working on the problem of protecting spacecraft from solar radiation developed a plastic film coated in a vapor-deposited layer of aluminum only a few atoms thick.

 The metal layer reflected 90 to 97% of infrared radiation. It weighed almost nothing. It could be folded into a square the size of a pack of cigarettes and it could, in the right configuration, reflect most of the heat your body was emitting right back at you. Your body is, among other things, a small infrared lamp.

 At rest, you emit radiation at a wavelength of about 9 to 10 microns, the same frequency at which warm objects glow in the night vision footage you’ve seen on the news. Most of the heat leaving your body at night, if you’re wrapped in a blanket that doesn’t touch you everywhere, is leaving as radiation. Ordinary fabric absorbs that radiation and re-emits it outward.

 Mylar reflects it backward, at you. Annelise didn’t know any of this. She just knew that when she wrapped herself in the shiny blanket and taped the edges shut with dollar store duct tape, she woke up the next morning and her back wasn’t numb. The cardboard underneath her was warm to the touch. She sat in the stairwell at 5:30 a.m.

 on December 31st, 2017, as the temperature outside dropped to 11 below and she stared at the inside of her Mylar blanket and she thought there was something here she didn’t understand yet. She would spend the next seven years understanding it. On January 29th, 2019, the polar vortex arrived.

 You have probably heard the phrase. Most people use it to mean really cold weather. What it actually means is an upper atmosphere cyclone of frigid air that normally sits over the North Pole held in place by the jet stream. When the jet stream weakens, a chunk of the vortex breaks off and rolls southward and when one rolled into Wisconsin on January 29th, 2019, Madison recorded a low of 26 below, shattering the previous all-time record by 4°. Mount Horeb hit 35 below.

Darlington, down in Lafayette County, hit 38 below air temperature and the wind blew. The wind chill in Waukesha was 55 below, in Sheboygan, 54, in Mineral Point, 53. In Menomonee, a weather station west of Eau Claire, the wind chill hit 60° below zero, the coldest wind chill ever recorded in the state of Wisconsin.

Governor Tony Evers declared a state of emergency. The University of Wisconsin canceled classes, an almost unprecedented event. The United States Postal Service suspended mail delivery across five states. Medical examiners across the upper Midwest prepared for a body count. And on the west side of Milwaukee, in an alley behind a closed-down auto body shop near 16th and Vliet, a 45-year-old woman was assembling something she had been designing in her head since the stairwell on New Year’s Eve a year earlier. She had been collecting parts

for 14 months. By then, she had understood a truth that would have been obvious to an Inuit hunter a thousand years ago and was still largely unknown to the people walking past her on Vliet Street. The truth was this, you do not heat a space, you heat a body. A hundred watts of heat will not warm a room.

 A hundred watts of heat will easily warm a body if the body is wrapped tightly enough that the hundred watts can’t escape. The volume of a human being is about 75 L. The volume of a bedroom is about 30,000. The ratio is 400 to 1. Every BTU you spend heating the empty air around you is a BTU you didn’t spend heating the only object in the room that matters, which is you.

Everyone who has ever tried to heat a house in winter has gotten this backwards. Annelise had gotten it backwards, too, in the Buick with the candles. She was not going to get it backwards anymore. The thing she built in the alley, over the course of three hours on the afternoon of January 29th, 2019, looked to the casual passerby like a bundle of trash.

It was 7 ft long and 2 ft wide. The outer shell was two contractor-grade black trash bags, not the flimsy kitchen kind, the thick construction kind, stolen one at a time from behind a job site on Wells Street, taped into a sleeve, windproof, waterproof, invisible to police because police don’t search trash.

 Inside the sleeve, five layers of clear plastic drop cloth, the kind painters use, each separated from the next by 1-in strips of cardboard arranged like ribs. Each gap trapped a 1-in layer of air. Air that couldn’t circulate was air that couldn’t carry heat away. And in those five gaps, she had created five separate thermal barriers.

 This is the physics of a triple-pane window and a down jacket and the fur of a polar bear, not the material itself, but the still air trapped inside it. Inside those five layers, two Mylar emergency blankets, shiny side inward, taped into a second sleeve reflecting her body’s infrared back at her. Inside the Mylar, 4 in of clean, dry, scavenged cardboard in a bed beneath her.

And then, tucked against her body in four specific locations, the kidneys, between the shoulder blades, under the soles of her feet, and held against her abdomen, were four 2-L plastic laundry detergent bottles, thick HDPE. She had scrubbed them clean for a week in a QuickTrip bathroom. Before she climbed into the cocoon that night, she walked into the overnight diner at the Amtrak station on St.

 Paul Avenue and asked the waitress to fill all four bottles with hot water from the coffee machine. The waitress, a woman named Pam who had seen Annelise twice a week for months, did not ask why. She filled them to 160°. Annelise wrapped each bottle in an old wool sock. She walked four blocks back to the alley. She unzipped the cocoon.

[clears throat] She climbed inside. She arranged the bottles. She closed the seal. And here, in the coldest night in the recorded history of the state of Wisconsin, is what was happening inside that pile of trash. Imagine you are Annelise lying on your back. Your body at rest is producing about 80 watts of metabolic heat.

It is the heat of a medium bright light bulb. It is being produced by the slow combustion of the food you ate at a Repairs of the Breach lunch 8 hours earlier, a cheese sandwich and an apple. Beneath you, 4 in of cardboard with a composite insulation value around 12. The ground, 6 in below, is trying to conduct your heat downward into the planet.

 Through 4 in of cardboard, it cannot. The cardboard holds. Around you, at a distance of about 2 in on all sides, the inner Mylar shell. Your body’s infrared radiation, the 9-micron glow of your warm skin, hits the aluminum layer and reflects back, about 90% of it. The Mylar is doing what the walls of a thermos flask do, which is make your body a source of heat that keeps receiving its own heat back.

Outside the Mylar, five trapped air gaps, each still, each adding insulation value. Together with the Mylar, the envelope rates around R10, comparable to the walls of an ordinary house. Outside that, the black plastic shell cutting the wind. Wind is what makes cold cold. In a 50 below wind chill, almost all of that cold is the wind pulling heat off you by convection.

 The wind is stopped at the plastic sleeve. It cannot get in. And inside the envelope, against your body, four bottles of hot water. This is the part that nobody understands until they run the math and then it becomes the most beautiful part. Water has the highest specific heat of any common substance on Earth. What that means is that water holds more heat per pound than almost anything else.

Four liters of water cooling from 160° to 60° over 8 hours releases roughly 1,600 BTU of heat. That works out to an average of about 55 W continuously, slowly over the whole night. Your metabolism is giving you 80 W. The water is giving you 55. Total heat input 135 W. Heat loss through the envelope at a 90° temperature difference between you and the outside world is about 40 W.

Maybe 50 on the worst nights. 135 in, 40 out. Surplus of about 95. 95 W of surplus heat in a closed envelope the size of a sleeping bag will raise the interior temperature to body comfortable levels within 30 minutes and keep it there for approximately 8 hours. When Annelise woke at 6:45 a.m. on January 30th, 2019, the coldest morning in Wisconsin history, the thermometer she had taped to the inside of her cocoon read 73°.

Outside, 22 below. She lay there for a full minute before she opened the seal listening to the silence of an alley where every other living creature was dead or hiding. Then she unzipped the cocoon, folded every piece of it into a duffel bag in the order she would need to reassemble it 12 hours later and walked to the library.

On October 31 of that same year, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation posted eviction notices along the chain-link fence of the encampment known as Tent City. Underneath the I- 794 overpass between Clybourn and St. Paul, 80 to 90 people lived there and Annelise by then was one of them. She had moved to Tent City in the summer of 2019 because it was safer than sleeping alone.

 Tent City had its own economics, its own politics, its own loose code of conduct. It also had witnesses, which meant that when a man tried to take her things, someone else saw it. She lost her community that October. The WisDOT trucks came with dumpsters and everything people had built, the pallet walls, the shared fire pits, the hand-lettered street signs they had made for the inside of their encampment, went into the dumpsters and went to a landfill.

 Annelise retreated back to the alley behind the auto body shop on 16th and Vliet. Alone again, but she had by now something most of the other Tent City residents did not. She had a system. She had spent three winters refining it, and in the winter that followed, she added two refinements that would keep her alive for the next 5 years. The first was hand warmers.

She had started noticing them in the bottom of bags from Street Angels and from Volunteers of Repairers of the Breach. Small flat packets the size of a playing card. You open the plastic wrapper and within 10 minutes the packet was warm. Within an hour it was hot. It stayed hot for 8 to 10 hours. The chemistry is simple and elegant.

 Inside the packet is iron powder, salt, water, activated charcoal, and vermiculite. When you open the wrapper, oxygen from the air reaches the iron, the iron rusts, oxidizes, and the rusting reaction releases heat. It is exactly the same chemistry as a nail rusting on a fence, only accelerated. Each packet produces about 2 W of heat for 8 hours, which doesn’t sound like much, but Annelise was not trying to heat a room.

 She was trying to heat a body, and a body, she had learned, has specific places where heating matters more than others. The femoral arteries at the groin, the carotids at the neck, the axillaries at the armpits, the kidneys, the lumbar spine. Heat a hand warmer against the femoral artery and you are warming every pint of blood that passes through it once a minute to the entire lower half of your body.

 Heat 10 square inches of skin over the kidneys and you are raising the temperature of a blood supply that is at that location about a quarter of your total cardiac output. She placed six hand warmers, one at each femoral, one at each axilla, one at the lumbar, one at the carotid. 12 W perfectly targeted where it mattered. The second refinement came from a book.

She had found it in the Central Library. She had been by then a regular at the library, and a librarian named Teresa had started setting aside books she thought Annelise might like. And the book was about Japanese architecture. In it she read about the kotatsu, a low table with a heater underneath and a heavy quilt draped over the edges.

You sit with your legs under the quilt and the heater warms the small enclosed space around your legs. The rest of the house can be freezing and you are warm. The Japanese had figured out centuries ago what the flower pot video still got wrong. You do not heat a room. You heat a volume small enough that a little heat can make a large difference.

Annelise began building against the brick wall of a commercial laundry on 17th Street that vented warm air from its industrial dryers, a kind of street kotatsu, a three-sided nook of cardboard and plastic that caught the waste heat from the laundry vent and held it against her body while she read. She spent three to four hours every night reading by the light of a $5 headlamp in a 60° pocket of stolen industrial heat while the air around her dropped into the single digits.

She read about heat transfer. She read about Inuit igloos. She read about the Mongolian ger, a yurt-shaped felt tent that herders have used on the Central Asian Steppe for 3,000 years, heated by a small stove in the middle that warms the felt walls, which then radiate back inward. She read about herself, although the book did not know it was about her.

She was doing in an alley in Milwaukee what humans had been doing across every cold region of the planet for as long as there had been humans. She was trapping still air. She was reflecting radiant heat. She was using thermal mass. She was heating a body, not a space. She was not a woman in a pile of trash.

 She was an engineer retracing the entire history of human thermal survival from first principles, alone. The pandemic came and the shelters that were already inadequate became impossible. Milwaukee Rescue Mission cut its capacity in half for social distancing. Repairers of the Breach reduced its day shelter hours. The Cathedral Center closed to new intake for 4 months.

 Masks were required for anyone who wanted to enter a library, a bus, or a warming room. Annelise had not owned a mask. A volunteer gave her one in October 2020. The winter itself was a mercy, climatologically speaking. The coldest stretch came in early February 2021 when a compact polar vortex dropped wind chills across southern Wisconsin into the negative 20s and 30s.

It was not the 2019 event. Annelise slept through it the way a person with a good thermostat sleeps through a cold night. Uneventfully. She also, that winter, taught her system to someone else. A woman named Darla had arrived at Repairers of the Breach in November, newly homeless after an eviction in Waukesha.

She was 49 and had never slept outside a day in her life, and she was terrified. Annelise, who had slept outside for four winters by then, sat with Darla in the day shelter one afternoon and explained, step by step, in the plainest language, how to stay warm, what to collect, where to collect it, which grocery stores threw out the best cardboard, which dumpsters had the unbroken laundry detergent bottles, where to stand in the Amtrak diner to ask Pam for hot water without getting the wrong waitress.

Darla listened. Darla took notes on a paper napkin. Darla built a smaller version of the cocoon behind a different dumpster on 27th Street. And in January 2020, Darla slept through a 26 below wind chill at 71° inside her own pile of trash. Annelise’s invention had replicated itself. The following January brought another cold snap.

Wind chills of 20 to 30 below across Milwaukee for 5 days, and she refined the cocoon for the sixth time. That year’s refinement was about moisture. She had noticed over five winters that the inside of the Mylar always had condensation on it by morning, the water vapor from her breath. Water vapor, as it condenses, releases heat, which was helpful.

 But if the condensation froze or if any of the cardboard got damp, the insulation value collapsed. Wet cardboard is not cardboard. Wet cardboard is cold wet paper, which is a thermal conductor, not a thermal insulator. The rule survivalists repeat, that cotton kills, applies in miniature here. Dry insulation works. Wet insulation kills.

 Annelise solved the moisture problem with a piece of thin cloth stretched across her face at an angle, not touching her skin, but creating a small antechamber where her warm breath could exit past her nose and leave most of its moisture on the cloth before entering the main envelope, a vapor trap, a human scale version of the double door airlock on a Scandinavian sauna.

The book she had read about it was at the library. Teresa had ordered it through interlibrary loan from the Eau Claire system. On December 21st, 2022, a bomb cyclone intensified over the Central Plains and moved east. By the morning of December 22nd, wind gusts in southern Wisconsin had reached 65 mph.

 Snow was falling at 2 in per hour, and visibility in the open was essentially zero. Governor Evers declared a state of emergency. Two people died in Wisconsin, one in a traffic collision on I-94, one falling through river ice near Appleton. A hundred died across the country before Christmas morning. At 9:00 p.m. on December 22nd, a 22-year-old woman knocked on the side of Annalee’s cocoon in the alley behind the auto body shop.

Her name was Ashley. Annalee had seen her twice at Repairers of the Breach. Ashley was wearing jeans and a denim jacket, and her lips were blue. “Can I come in?” she said. The cocoon was built for one. The math Annalee had spent 7 years perfecting assumed 180-W body, not two. Two bodies would double the metabolic heat input, and also approximately double the carbon dioxide production.

She had never slept in the cocoon with another person. She opened the seal. Ashley climbed in. Annalee zipped it behind her. They lay on their sides, spine to spine, in the dark. Annalee put one of the hot water bottles against the small of Ashley’s back. Ashley began to shiver violently, which Annalee knew was a good sign.

 Shivering meant Ashley’s core was still warm enough to defend itself. The dangerous stop is when the shivering stops. They slept. Or Ashley slept. Annalee lay awake for most of the night, watching the small thermometer she had taped to the inside of the envelope, making sure the interior temperature didn’t climb so high that they would sweat.

Sweat-soaked insulation was the thing she had spent seven winters learning to avoid. By 4:00 a.m., the interior temperature had stabilized at 79°. Ashley’s breathing was even. Outside, the wind was still 60 mph, and the thermometer at the fire hydrant at 16th and Vliet read nine below. At 7:15 a.m.

, Annalee shook Ashley awake, gave her the names and addresses of three warming centers, and sent her to Repairers of the Breach. Ashley is alive today. She lives in Racine. She works at a daycare. She told the story of that night to a social worker in 2023, which is how, 2 years later, the Milwaukee County Homeless Outreach Team finally figured out who Annalee Laxo was.

The winter that followed made no sense. The Wisconsin State Climatology Office would eventually record it as the warmest winter in the state since records began in 1895. The statewide average was 28.3°, beating the previous record by a full 2°, which in climatology is a number that makes scientists uncomfortable.

Lake Superior was nearly ice-free. Lake Michigan was at historic lows. On February 27th, 2024, Kenosha Airport registered 77°. Wisconsin recorded its first winter tornadoes in state history that same month. For most residents, this was a gift. For Annalee, it was a new problem. Her system had been designed for dry cold.

 A January at 20 below with no humidity was, for the cocoon, easy mode. A December at 34° and raining was the nightmare scenario. Liquid water got into everything. Cardboard turned to mush. Mylar slid against wet plastic and lost contact. The black shell trapped moisture on the inside and created a cold, wet envelope that was thermally worse than no envelope at all.

A wet 34° is more dangerous to a person sleeping outside than a dry 10 below. Annalee, who had built her whole system around the physics of dry cold, had to redesign for water. She did what she had done every time before. She read. She thought. She tried things. She added a sloped outer tarp, propped up on two broken hockey sticks she had found behind the MacArthur Square ice rink, to shed rain.

 She switched from cardboard under her body to closed-cell foam, the pink extruded polystyrene kind, scavenged from a construction dumpster, which does not absorb water. She added a thin sheet of Tyvek, the same material used in house wrap, as a vapor barrier between her body and the insulation, so that her sweat would move outward, but rain could not move inward.

 She had that winter, without ever having taken a class in anything related, independently reinvented the four-layer vapor barrier clothing system used by polar expeditions. She also cried twice that winter about the weather. The second time was on the evening of February 27th, 2024, sitting at a picnic table in a public park near the Domes, wearing a T-shirt at 77° in February.

She was not crying because she was sad. She was crying because something was wrong with the world in a way she couldn’t fix. The cocoon could handle 50 below wind chill. It could handle 60 mph winds. It could not handle a world in which February felt like May. None of her tools could handle that. She folded the cocoon into her duffel bag and watched a couple eat ice cream in a park in February in Wisconsin, and she understood that something beyond her was broken.

 The December 2024 cold snap killed five people in Milwaukee County in 17 days. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner, in a press statement on December 14th, named them. The oldest was 82. The youngest was 56. Three of them were homeless. They had died within 2 miles of each other in a city that had, by then, at least eight warming centers, an active county homeless outreach team, and a 211 hotline that would send a van to pick up anyone who called.

 None of them had called. Most people who die outside in Wisconsin winters don’t. The reasons are not what you think. They are not usually mental illness. They are not usually the things that Annalee Laxo could have told you from the inside. Fear of being separated from a partner or a pet. Fear of theft. Fear of violence.

 Fear of the curfew that locks you out if you get there at 6:20 instead of 6:15. The exhaustion of having to be somewhere by a time. The loss of the one single thing that sleeping outside preserves, which is the ability to make your own decisions. Annalee could have been in a shelter most of those nine winters. She chose the alley. She chose it because the alley was hers.

And this is the part of the story where we have to be careful, because the easy version of it, the uplifting Hallmark version, would end with Annalee being discovered and housed and saved. The real version is more complicated than that. In February 2025, a Street Angels outreach worker named Raphael, whom Annalee had known for 6 years, asked her, as he had asked her every winter, if she wanted housing.

Raphael was not offering her a shelter. He was offering her a studio apartment. A real one. Her own keys. Her own door. Through a new Milwaukee County Housing First program that had, in 2024, moved Milwaukee’s homeless count down by 16% against a national trend that was moving sharply the other way. She said yes.

She moved into the apartment on March 3rd, 2025. It has a thermostat. The thermostat is set to 68°. She keeps the cocoon folded in the back of the closet. Teresa, the librarian, helped her fill out the paperwork. And on the wall of her kitchen, above the coffee maker, Annalee Laxo has taped a single sheet of paper on which, in block letters, she has written three sentences she says she wants to remember on the days when the apartment feels too small.

 You cannot heat a space. You can only heat a body. Everything I have I learned from the cold. This is, in the end, a story about a woman who was called stupid for nine winters. Every person who walked past the cocoon in the alley saw trash. They saw failure. They saw a woman whose life had clearly gone wrong in ways that, for their own comfort, they did not want to examine too closely.

A few of them laughed. Most of them looked away. A very small number brought hot chocolate. None of them, in nine years of walking past, saw what was actually there. What was actually there was an engineer working alone at the edge of the world who had independently reconstructed from first principles the thermophysics that the Inuit perfected a thousand years ago, and the Mongols perfected three thousand years ago, and the Japanese perfected eight hundred years ago, and that NASA perfected in 1964, and that Wisconsin, in its winters of

77° Februarys and 60 below wind chills, still largely fails to teach in any public school. What was actually there was a woman who had, without resources, without credentials, without help, done the math that keeps a human body alive in an environment designed to kill it.

 What was actually there was someone doing something in the wreckage of her life that was the opposite of stupid. And so, the question the story leaves us with is not really a question about Annalee Laxo. The question is about everyone who walked past her. Everyone who saw the pile of foil in the laundry detergent bottle and decided, in the half second before they looked away, that what they were looking at was a failure of character rather than the most careful engineering on the whole block.

 Because Wisconsin has, on average, 60 cold deaths a winter. Because the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner logged five in 17 days in December of 2024. Because somewhere tonight, as you listen to this, in an alley behind a building in a city you drive through, there is a person doing something with cardboard and plastic and hot water and thought, and you will probably, if you see it, look away. Look again.

What you are seeing might not be what you think it is. It might be the quiet arithmetic of a person staying alive. And if you understand what you are looking at, if you can see the Mylar for what it is, and the cardboard for what it is, and the hot water bottle for what it is, and the careful, patient, self-taught mind behind all of it, then what you are really looking at in that alley, behind that dumpster, is one of the most underestimated engineers in the state of Wisconsin, whose name, for the record, is Annelise.
