How One Homeless Woman’s “Stupid” Minivan Trick Kept Her Warm Without Starting the Engine Once

-9° outside. Engine off for 11 hours. And the woman asleep in the back of that Dodge Caravan registered a skin temperature of 91° when she woke up. Both of those facts are true. I had trouble putting them together when I first heard them. And I’m guessing you do, too. A minivan in an Indiana January is a metal box.

Thin walls, single pane glass on every side, zero insulation in the factory panels. A floor that’s basically a sheet of stamped steel between you and frozen asphalt. I’ve sat in parked cars in winter. Everybody has. You know what happens. The cold comes in through your feet first, then the windows start pulling warmth off your skin like a tax you didn’t agree to.

 And within 40 minutes, you’re shaking. That’s at 30°. At -9, you’d last maybe 2 hours before it got medically stupid. Trina Boyle lasted 7 months, November through May. Terre Haute, Indiana. Parked at the far edge of a Walmart lot off US 41. Backed up against a chain-link fence where the security cameras didn’t quite reach.

 She never started the engine, not once. Not on the night it hit -16 and the city opened emergency warming shelters at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. She stayed in her van, in her silver box. And she slept. Here’s the part that made people laugh. Her setup cost $15. 12 for a roll of Reflectix from the Home Depot on Margaret Avenue.

 Three for a roll of duct tape. That’s the whole budget. That’s the whole system. A roll of bubble wrap with foil on both sides and some tape. And when other people in the lot saw what she built, most of them thought she’d lost it. Because she didn’t insulate the van. I need to say that again because it matters. She did not insulate the van.

She didn’t cover the windows. She didn’t stuff the door panels. She didn’t lay foam board across the floor or hang moving blankets from the ceiling or do any of the things you see in every van life video on this platform. She left the van cold. What she did instead looked, from the outside, like a person wrapping themselves in aluminum foil and climbing inside a refrigerator box.

One of the guys parked three spots over, a man named Curtis who slept in a Ford Econoline with a cracked heater core, told her it was the dumbest thing he’d seen somebody do when they had a whole van to work with. “You got all this space,” he said, “and you’re going to sleep in a coffin.” He wasn’t wrong about the size.

 Her capsule was 3 ft wide, 5 ft long, 2 and 1/2 ft tall. You couldn’t sit up in it. You crawled in through a flap she’d cut on one end and sealed behind you with a strip of duct tape folded over to make a tab. Once you were inside, you couldn’t roll over without bumping a wall. Your elbows touched the sides.

 Your feet were 6 in from the far end. If you get claustrophobic reading this, good. Hold on to that feeling because it’s the reason the thing worked. Trina Boyle is 42. Sandy brown hair she cuts herself with kitchen scissors, uneven on the left side where she can’t see what she’s doing. A visible gap where her upper left premolar used to be before it cracked on a piece of hard candy in 2021 and she couldn’t afford the extraction for 9 months.

 Thin face, pale blue eyes that squint when she’s doing math in her head, which is often. A faded medical caduceus tattoo on her right inner wrist from when she finished her dental hygienist certification at Ivy Tech in 2008. She’d been good at that job, 15 years at a practice on Wabash Avenue. Steady. Then the dentist retired, the new owner brought in his own staff, and Trina was out. This was March 2023.

She had about 3 months of savings, a car payment she was behind on, and a one-bedroom apartment on 8th Street with a landlord who’d already sent two late notices. By August, she was in the van. The Dodge was paid off by then only because she’d stopped paying rent in June and put everything toward the car note.

Logical. Cold, if you think about it. But Trina does math before she does feelings, and the math said, “The apartment is gone no matter what. So, keep the thing with an engine.” September wasn’t bad. October was chilly, but manageable with blankets. November 4th was the first night she woke up shivering so hard her jaw ached the next morning, and that’s when the project started.

She did what everybody does first. She tried to insulate the whole van. Went to the Home Depot, bought a roll of Reflectix, came back and started cutting pieces to fit the windows. Side windows, rear window, windshield. Taped them up. Looked around the interior, thought about the walls, the ceiling, the floor.

She had a tape measure in the glove box, a stubby yellow Stanley that her ex had left behind, and she started measuring. I want to walk through what she found because it’s the hinge of this whole story, and it’s where most people stop thinking. A 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, stow ‘n go model, with the rear seats folded into the floor.

 The interior cargo volume when those seats go flat is about 140 cubic feet. Call it 140. That’s the space you’re trying to heat with your body if you insulate every surface and seal every gap and do the whole van life thing properly. Your body, sitting still, asleep, produces somewhere around 80 watts of heat.

 Could be 100 if you’ve eaten recently. If your metabolism runs hot. If you’re a bigger person. Trina weighs about 130 lb, and she hadn’t been eating great. Call it 75 watts for her on an average night. 75 watts into 140 cubic feet. You know what 75 watts is? It’s a light bulb. The old kind, incandescent, the ones that got hot enough to burn your fingers.

You’re trying to heat a space the size of a large closet with a single old light bulb. That’s what everyone who insulates a whole van is doing. Even if you get the insulation perfect, even if you cover every window and seal every seam and spend $200 on foam board and reflectix and moving blankets, you’re still asking a light bulb to heat a closet in Indiana in January.

It doesn’t work. Or it works a little. Maybe you get the interior from minus 9 to 15° if the insulation is good. That’s still 15°. You’re still cold. You’re still shivering. You’ve just spent 200 bucks to shiver slightly less. Trina figured this out on the second night after she’d done the windows.

 She woke up at 3:00 a.m. on November 6th, looked at the thermometer she’d hung from the rearview mirror, and it read 22° inside. Outside was about 11. So she’d gained 11° from all that window work. 11°. She sat there looking at those window panels she’d spent an afternoon cutting and fitting and taping. Fogged breath coming out of her in short bursts. Fingers already stiff.

 And she thought about it differently. This is what she told me later, and I’m going to try to get it right because the way she described the thought process is the interesting part. She said, “I was looking at all that empty air in the van, and I kept thinking, why am I trying to heat air I’m not even using? I’m lying on a mattress.

 I take up maybe 15 cubic feet. The rest of it is just air I’m paying for. Paying for.” She used that word. Like the heat leaving her body was a currency, and the empty air in the van was a bill she couldn’t afford. So she stopped trying to heat the van. She pulled the Reflectix off the windows. All of it. Rolled it back up.

 And she rebuilt the whole thing around herself. 3 ft wide, matching the width of the foam mattress pad she slept on. A 2-in thing she bought at Goodwill for $8. 5 ft long. Her height with her knees slightly bent. 2 and 1/2 ft tall. Just enough room to lie on her back with about 6 in of clearance above her face. That’s 37 and 1/2 cubic feet.

 Round it to 37. From 140 to 37. She’d cut the volume she needed to heat by almost 80%. Same body. Same 75 W. But now those 75 W were heating a space the size of a large suitcase instead of a space the size of a walk-in closet. She built the frame out of nothing. Took the Reflectix roll, unspooled it, cut four panels for the walls and one for the ceiling.

The floor was the mattress itself. Duct tape held the seams. She doubled the Reflectix on the ceiling panel because heat rises and she wanted that surface doing the most work. The entrance was a flap on one end cut with a box cutter she’d taken from her old job that overlapped by about 4 in so it would stay closed by gravity alone.

She added a duct tape tab for pulling it shut from inside. The whole build took 90 minutes on November 7. I keep thinking about that night. The first one. Crawling into a silver box inside a cold van in a Walmart parking lot and pulling a duct tape tab to seal yourself in and just trusting the physics. That took something.

 Not bravery, exactly. Maybe the kind of calm that comes after you’ve already lost most of the things you were afraid of losing. She lay down on the mattress, pulled the flap shut, pressed the tab. Nothing happened at first. The air inside the capsule was the same temperature as the air in the van, which was the same temperature as the air outside, about 28° on that particular night.

15 minutes later, she pushed a thermometer through the wall seam to check. 51°. She checked again 30 minutes in. 58. By the time she was getting drowsy, maybe 45 minutes after sealing the flap, the thermometer inside the capsule read 61°. Her body heat alone, trapped and reflected back, had raised the temperature of that 37 cubic feet by 33°.

 Outside the capsule, inside the van, the air was still 28. She could feel it on the flap when she pressed her hand against the entrance. Cold van, warm box, no engine, no heater, no electricity, no fire, no fuel of any kind except whatever Trina Boyle had eaten for dinner, which on that night was a can of SpaghettiOs and half a sleeve of saltine crackers.

How does this work? I mean, the actual physics of it, not the hand-wavy version. Your body is a furnace. You burn calories. That combustion produces heat, about 75 to 100 watts at rest. That heat radiates off your skin in every direction, infrared radiation mostly, the same kind of energy that makes you feel warm when you stand near a campfire, even though the fire isn’t touching you.

 In open air, that heat disperses, goes everywhere, doesn’t come back. In a van, most of it goes to the walls and windows and floor, and then through them to the outside. Glass is terrible at holding heat. Sheet metal is worse. Reflectix two layers of aluminum foil with a layer of bubble wrap between them.

 Aluminum reflects about 97% of radiant heat. When you wrap a small space in it, you’re building a box that bounces your own infrared radiation back at you. Your body throws heat at the wall. The wall throws 97% of it back. Your body absorbs it, throws it again, and the cycle continues. That remaining 3% bleeds through over time.

 So, the capsule isn’t a perfect seal. It loses heat slowly. But, when the space is only 37 cubic feet and the heat source is continuous, the gains outpace the losses. You reach an equilibrium somewhere around 55° to 62°, depending on body size, outside temperature, and how well the seams are taped.

 NASA uses the same material for the same reason. The emergency blankets in survival kits, the ones that look like sheets of gold foil, work on the same principle. Astronaut suits use multi-layer insulation that’s basically Reflectix’s richer cousin. The physics is the physics. Scale doesn’t change it. But, here’s what nobody talks about, and Trina figured out by accident.

 The small volume solves a second problem that most people don’t even know they have. Convection. Air moving. In a full van, even with the windows sealed, air circulates. Warm air rises to the ceiling, cools against the metal roof, sinks back down, picks up a little heat from your body, rises again. That loop moves heat away from you constantly.

 It’s a conveyor belt running in every direction, and you can’t turn it off because the temperature difference between your body and the van walls is what drives it. In a capsule that’s 2 and 1/2 ft tall, convection barely exists. The air column is too short. There isn’t enough vertical distance for a meaningful circulation loop to form.

 The warm air above you stays above you. The cooler air below you stays below you. Everything sits still. And still air is one of the best insulators on the planet. Trina didn’t know the word convection. She didn’t need to. What she knew was that the air in her capsule felt different from the air in the open van. It felt settled.

Like the air in a closet that nobody’s opened in a while. She told me it didn’t feel like wind. When I slept in the open van, there was always this feeling on my face like something moving. Not a draft exactly, but just the air doing something. In the box there’s nothing. The air just sits there and gets warm.

That’s the whole thing. That’s the trick that made Curtis and two other people in the parking lot look at her like she was crazy. Build a small box out of $15 of materials. Get inside. Seal the flap. Let your own body do the work. -9° and she’s sleeping at 57. -16 the coldest night she registered 52 inside the capsule.

That’s a 68° difference between the air touching her face and the air outside the van. She slept in that capsule from November 7th through March 29th. 143 nights. She didn’t modify it. Didn’t upgrade it. Didn’t add anything. Same duct tape. Same Reflectix. One panel on the ceiling started to delaminate in February where her breath condensation had been hitting it.

 And she taped a fresh piece over the top. Cost her about 6 in of duct tape. I should talk about the moisture. Because this is the part that could kill you if you don’t handle it. And it’s the part she was smartest about. You breathe out water vapor all night. In a sealed space that water has nowhere to go. It condenses on the coldest surface.

 Which in her case was whichever wall was closest to the van’s exterior. She noticed this on the third morning. Droplets on the Reflectix running down into the seam at the mattress edge. She fixed it the way a person who thinks in straight lines fixes things. She didn’t seal the flap completely. Left a gap at the bottom.

 About 2 in where the where the flap’s lower edge met the mattress. That gap let moisture vent slowly into the van’s interior while being too small and too low to let meaningful heat escape from the top of the capsule, where warm air collected. She also kept a hand towel inside and wiped down the ceiling panel every morning before she opened the flap and got out. Two swipes.

30 seconds. That was her entire maintenance routine for 143 days. There’s something I want to come back to about Curtis, the guy in the Econoline who called her capsule a coffin. His heater core cracked in December. Coolant leak. The sweet smell of ethylene glycol. A puddle forming under the engine block in the middle of the night.

 No heat from the dashboard vents anymore. He’d been running the engine for 20 minutes every couple of hours to warm the cab, and now he couldn’t even do that without risking the engine overheating. Curtis had insulated his entire van, had foam board on the walls, moving blankets on the ceiling, Reflectix on every window.

 He’d spent, by his own count, about 170 dollars on materials over the course of 2 months. And when the heater core went, all that insulation gave him maybe a 10° advantage over outside temperatures, enough to keep the interior above freezing most nights. Not enough to sleep comfortably. He asked Trina to show him how to build a capsule on the fourth night after his heater died.

She helped him cut the panels. His was wider because he was a bigger guy, maybe 220, 6’1, 3 and 1/2 ft wide, 6 ft long, same 2 and 1/2 ft ceiling, about 52 cubic feet, bigger than hers, but still less than half the volume of his van’s interior. Curtis hit 50° in his capsule within 20 minutes, fell asleep at 54, woke up at 51 because his body mass and higher metabolic output held the temperature more stable than Trina’s lighter frame could manage.

 He told her the next morning that he felt stupid. Not stupid for building the capsule, stupid for spending $170 trying to heat air he wasn’t using. That phrase again, air you’re not using. I’ve been thinking about this a lot since I first heard about Trina’s capsule, and there’s something in it that goes past the physics.

The impulse, when you’re cold, is to make the warm space bigger, more insulation, more coverage, more material, fill the van, cover every surface. The psychology is, I need to be protected from all of this. The cold is everywhere, so my defense must be everywhere, too. Trina went the other direction. She looked at the problem and decided the cold could have the van.

The cold could have 103 cubic feet of free air. She didn’t need it. She needed 37 cubic feet. She needed a space the size of her own body and 6 inches of clearance in every direction, and she was willing to give up everything else. There’s a word for that, but I’m not sure what it is. It’s not minimalism. Minimalism is an aesthetic choice people make when they have options.

This was triage. This was a 42-year-old woman with a dental hygienist certification and $15 figuring out the smallest version of warmth she could survive on, and finding out it was enough. March 29th was the last night she slept in the capsule. April came in warmer, and she could sleep in the open van again. By June, she’d gotten a job at a dental office on Poplar Street, a temp position that became permanent in August.

She’s in an apartment now, 13th Street, second floor, heat included in rent. She told me she still keeps a roll of Reflectix in the back of the Caravan, just in case. I asked her if she missed anything about the capsule, and she gave me a look like I’d asked her if she missed having a toothache, but then she thought about it for a second and said something I haven’t been able to shake.

It was the only time in 7 months I wasn’t cold. Every other minute, walking around, standing in line at the food pantry, sitting in my van during the day, I was cold. But in that box, for 8 hours, I was warm. That stupid silver box was the only warm place I had. $15, a roll of Reflectix, a roll of duct tape, and the understanding that you don’t have to heat the whole room, just the part of it that holds you.
