A woman set out on a morning hike, but she never made it to the trail. At first, police thought it looked like a tragic accident, but the deeper they dug, the more this case started gripping people across the country. Because what was unfolding quickly began to feel less like real life and more like a crime thriller.

 And once all the facts in this twisted case finally came to light, the sheer brutality of it shocked everyone. Ashley Millns was born on April 8th, 1982 in Toronto, Canada. She had three siblings and her father built a successful career in finance, so the family was very well-off. From an early age, Ashley was known for being creative and she decided to build a career around that.

 First, she earned a degree from a university in Canada. And after that, she went on to attend art school in the United States. When she came back home, Ashley got into interior design. She worked for herself staging homes for sale and over time built a successful business in that field. Outside of work, Ashley loved being active. She was always hiking, running, or skiing.

 Her family had a chalet at a private ski resort and she regularly went there to spend time on the slopes. It was at one of the events held at that resort that Ashley met a man named James. His family was also pretty wealthy. James’ mother held a senior position at Warner Brothers and his grandparents had founded a well-known charity organization.

Ashley and James clicked quickly. They bonded over their love of the outdoors and their shared dream of having a big family. In 2012, they got married and not long after that, they had a son. Three years later, their daughter was born. During all those years, Ashley kept working in interior design, while James went after the career he’d always wanted.

 He became a firefighter, and over time worked his way up to captain. By then, the family had moved to a small town called Collingwood. It was pretty far from Toronto, where most of their relatives still lived, but the area was surrounded by national parks and lakes. So, Ashley and James got to spend a lot of time out in nature with the kids.

They also loved spending time at the same ski resort where they first met, and regularly went out together on scenic trails. By 2023, their life looked full, stable, and happy. Their son was nine, and their daughter was six. James was well-respected in the tight-knit local community because of his role as a fire captain.

 On top of that, he also picked up extra work clearing snow, even though he and Ashley were already doing very well financially. As for Ashley, she’d stepped away from her own thing and taken a job at a local development company, where she helped decorate houses. From the outside, it looked like their family had a bright, happy future ahead of them.

But on January 26th, 2023, everything changed. That morning, Ashley, just a few months shy of her 41st birthday, decided to go out on an early walk, something she’d done hundreds of times before. She loved hiking the trails in that national park that began near the ski resort. And at around 5:00 a.m., she texted her husband to say she was heading out.

About an hour later, a local man was driving along a quiet, nearly empty road near the ski slopes. It was still dark out, and a heavy snowstorm was blowing through. But something caught his eye anyway. There was a strange orange glow coming from below the embankment beside the road.

 He knew there weren’t any houses in the area, so it immediately struck him as odd. He pulled over, walked toward the ditch, and saw that there was a car down below, completely engulfed in flames. So, he called the firefighters right away. Once the fire was put out, they saw there was a human body inside. Because of the fire damage, there was no way to visually identify the victim.

 So, police ran the plate on the SUV. It came back registered to Ashley and James’s family. Officers tried calling both of them, but neither answered. Word spread quickly, and Ashley’s coworkers told police she hadn’t shown up at the office that morning. A little later, officers managed to track down James.

 He was out doing one of his snow removal jobs and hadn’t heard any of the calls. When police told him their vehicle had been found burned out with a body inside, James could barely process what he was hearing. He refused to accept that his wife might be dead. At that point, the medical examiner was still working to confirm the identity of the victim, and investigators were trying to piece together exactly what had happened.

After James was taken to stay with relatives, he gradually pulled himself together and started answering police questions. He explained that Ashley had planned to go for a walk that morning along one of her favorite routes. According to James, they’d argued about it for quite a while that night before. Normally, Ashley would take the dog out in the mornings while he stayed home with the kids.

 But because she was heading to the trail and wasn’t taking the dog with her, James would have to walk it instead, which meant their children would be left home alone for a while. Still, by the next morning, they decided not to turn it into a bigger issue. On her way to the trail, Ashley texted him to say she was sorry for snapping at him.

 And James replied that the kids were still asleep, so he could go walk the dog without any problem. A little later, Ashley texted again and said she’d forgotten to take the gas cans out of the car. She’d filled them the day before for their snow removal equipment. She’d complained that the smell of gasoline was so strong she had to drive with the windows open, even though it was freezing outside.

That message mattered to investigators because the strong smell of gas at the crash scene and the fact that the windows were open had raised immediate questions. Now, there seemed to be an explanation for this. A few minutes later, Ashley sent one more text. She wrote that she was having an episode of vertigo and didn’t feel well.

James explained that she’d had those dizzy spells before because of inner ear problems and that the sharp gasoline smell could easily have triggered one. In the end, Ashley texted that she was just going to turn around and head back and just do her workout at home instead of going for a walk. So, police started leaning toward the idea that Ashley may have lost control on the way back home, gone off the road into the ditch, and that the vehicle then caught fire because several gas cans had spilled. They also checked

James’s account and confirmed that things had happened just the way he described them. He gave officers his phone, which had the text conversations with Ashley, and he also showed them footage from a security camera that captured her driving away from the house just a few minutes after he’d left to walk the dog.

 Even with all of that, though, the circumstances of the crash raised a number of questions that experts couldn’t answer yet. For one thing, the tire marks in the snow and on the road clearly suggested Ashley never even tried to brake before the vehicle went off the shoulder. Police considered the possibility that she may have passed out, but based on the tracks, the SUV appeared to keep full traction right up until the edge of the road.

 It didn’t look like it had skidded or spun out. There was another strange detail, too. The body was found on the front passenger side, slightly forward of the seat. That could suggest it had shifted during the crash, but whether a body could realistically move all the way from the driver’s seat to the passenger side was much more questionable.

Investigators started to feel there might be more to this story, so they decided to speak with Ashley’s family. Some of them immediately said they had a hard time believing the circumstances at all. Her relatives strongly doubted Ashley would have gone out for a walk in the park that early, especially during a snowstorm.

More than that, she supposedly agreed to leave the kids home alone while James walked the dog. And her family flat-out refused to believe that. When police asked what her relationship with her husband had really been like, Ashley’s relatives had a lot to say. According to them, James was always trying to control her, not just when it came to where she went or who she talked to, but even in everyday little things.

For example, he made the whole family follow his own strict diet, and he couldn’t stand having the wrong kinds of food in his house. It was also James who pushed for the move to Collingwood, even though it was far from Toronto, where most of their relatives lived. Because of that, Ashley didn’t get to see her family nearly as often, and it weighed on her more than most people realized.

 And when they did come to visit, James barely interacted with anyone. He’d usually sit off to the side, saying almost nothing. Just quietly watching Ashley. Whenever the two of them were alone, arguments would break out regularly, and James would insult her in the harshest ways. One time, Ashley’s sister overheard it and couldn’t just ignore it.

 She was stunned by the way he was talking to her. Over the years, all of it chipped away at their marriage. Behind the image of the perfect family, Ashley and James were drifting further and further apart. And in the end, it seemed like they were mostly staying together for the kids. But for detectives, that turned out to be only the beginning.

Ashley’s family also revealed that about a year before all this happened, she’d had an affair with another man. And James found out about it. In 2022, Ashley started a secret relationship with her boss, and a few months later, his wife found out. She immediately filed for divorce and gave Ashley an ultimatum.

Either she told her husband herself, or she would do it for her. So, Ashley ended up confessing the affair to James. And unsurprisingly, he took it very badly. Even so, the two of them decided to try to save the marriage and started seeing counselors, but it didn’t seem to help at all. According to Ashley’s family, James just took his control over her to another level.

 He installed surveillance cameras all over the house, and he regularly took her phone and went through everything on it. About a month before everything happened, Ashley told her relatives that the attempts to fix the marriage weren’t working, and that if things didn’t change soon, she was going to start thinking seriously about divorce. By the time police had learned all of this, experts had also found a few more interesting clues at the crash scene.

They determined that there were footprints in the snow leading away from Ashley’s driver’s side door. And since her body had been found on the passenger seat, it looked very much like someone else had been behind the wheel. And that person had walked away right after the crash. Detectives started seriously wondering whether Ashley had actually been killed.

And by that point, they already had a suspect. The problem was James had what looked like a pretty solid alibi. Footage from the camera outside their house showed him leaving to walk the dog just a few minutes before Ashley drove off in the SUV. And it didn’t seem realistic that he could have caught up to the vehicle on foot.

 On top of that, detectives had the text Ashley sent him shortly before the crash. So police brought James in again. And this time they didn’t dance around it. They told him they no longer believed Ashley’s death had been an accident. But James stuck to the same story. He insisted everything had happened exactly the way he’d said from the start.

 He even gave them the precise route he claimed he’d taken while walking the dog. And that turned out to be a mistake. Detectives immediately drove that route themselves and started asking homeowners for surveillance footage from their doorbell and security cameras. They went through hours and hours of video from different houses and James never appeared on any of it.

That told them one thing. He’d lied. So they kept pulling footage from cameras along the route between Ashley’s house and the crash site, hoping it might give them something new. And it did. Pretty quickly. But, before detectives could fully dig into the new evidence, something else happened.

 Something completely unexpected. Ashley’s son told them something that made their blood run cold. According to the boy, that night he woke up because his parents were arguing loudly. When he went into their room and asked what was going on, Ashley told him to bring her a phone because she wanted to call the police. He went to get it.

 But, before he could hand it to his mom, James told him to go back to bed. A few hours later, closer to morning, the boy woke again. This time, he saw his father sitting in one of the rooms crying. When he asked what was wrong, James didn’t really answer. He just said that mom had gone for a walk and would be back later. Then he added that he was going to take the dog out and left the house.

But, the child noticed something strange. The dog was still inside. All of it was painting a very grim picture for detectives. And before long, they had a much clearer sense of what had actually happened that morning. But, before that, the medical examiner handed them the autopsy report. And it named Ashley’s actual cause of death.

It wasn’t the crash. And it wasn’t the fire, either. Ashley had died from strangulation. That was the confirmation investigators needed. This was a homicide. And not long after that, they found even more evidence. By pulling together surveillance footage, witness statements, location data, and everything else they could get their hands on, police were able to build a timeline that made James look very bad.

The day before Ashley died, he went to his mother’s house and told her that the next morning he was planning to go on a long hike. He asked to borrow her car so he could leave it parked at the ski resort near where he was supposedly going to end up after the walk. Since the trail started somewhere else and James’ own car would have been left there, his mother didn’t think anything of the request.

 According to surveillance footage, he really did leave his mother’s car in the ski resort parking lot that evening and then went on with the rest of his night. Sometime during the night, based on what their son told police, James and Ashley got into an argument and Ashley wanted to call the police. Detectives believed James may have strangled her not long after the boy went back to his room.

 A few hours later, James started pulling his plan into motion. He told his son he was taking the dog for a walk and the camera outside the house did show him stepping out. But when detectives got the full recording, they realized James had only shown them a small clip. The complete footage revealed that he came back inside just a few minutes later.

Then, Ashley’s SUV was seen pulling away from the house. The camera angle didn’t show who was behind the wheel, but detectives believed it was James. In their view, after killing Ashley, he dressed her in hiking clothes and placed her body in the passenger seat. After that, James drove to the empty parking lot of another ski club, stopped there, and started pouring gasoline inside the vehicle.

Detectives figured that out because there was a surveillance camera nearby and the whole thing was caught on video. The footage wasn’t clear enough to positively identify James, but there was no doubt it was Ashley’s SUV. It’s also worth noting that Ashley herself had filled those gas cans the day before she died at James’s request because he told her they’d run out of fuel for the snow removal equipment.

After partially dousing the inside of the SUV with gas, carefully avoiding the driver’s seat, James got back behind the wheel and headed toward the lake to a secluded stretch of road after first rolling down the windows. Once he got there, he drove the vehicle into the ditch, most likely jumping out at the last second.

 Then, he stepped back to a safe distance, took out a lighter, and tossed it into the SUV, setting it ablaze almost instantly. Later, crime scene investigators found that lighter at the scene and it had James’s initials on it. It had been a personalized gift and the fire hadn’t destroyed it. Right after that, James ran back to the ski resort where he’d already left his mother’s car.

Detectives were able to piece that together from surveillance cameras along the route. The footage showed James calmly jogging down the road like he was just out for a morning run. Once he got to his mother’s car, he drove back toward the house, but he didn’t pull into his own driveway. Instead, he parked at a nearby school and walked the rest of the way home.

Detectives also found an explanation for those text messages between James and Ashley that had been sent that morning. Location data showed that both phones were in the exact same place every time those messages were sent, which meant James had been sending them himself, using [snorts] Ashley’s phone to help build his alibi.

At that point, investigators believed they had more than enough evidence tying James to the crime. More than that, they were convinced this hadn’t been impulsive. Everything about what he did pointed to planning. And soon, they found one more disturbing detail that seemed to back that up. Five days before the murder, James had gone to an event where a doctor was present.

 During a conversation, he mentioned that he was a big fan of Steven Seagal movies, then asked whether, in real life, it was actually that easy to break someone’s neck the way the actor does on screen. Given the way Ashley died, detectives saw that as yet another sign that James had been thinking about murder ahead of time. It looked like he’d counted on the crash story going unquestioned, because if police hadn’t started digging, and if the medical examiner hadn’t determined the real cause of death, he might have gotten away with it.

But James made a lot of mistakes. On top of that, police went through his internet activity and found that for a long time before the murder, he’d been searching things related to divorce and division of property. After that, his search history shifted to questions like, “Does a road flare burn completely?” and “Can deleted iPhone search history be recovered?” So detectives came to believe James made the decision to get rid of his wife because he didn’t want to split the assets or share custody of the kids.

But, that still wasn’t the end of it. There was one more twist, and it added another disturbing layer to the whole story. When investigators went through his phone, they found a conversation that revealed James had been having an affair, too. It turned out he’d started seeing a woman named Alexandra, the ex-wife of the same boss Ashley had been involved with.

James and Alexandra began the relationship in late 2022 after she found out about her husband’s cheating and divorced him. James kept the affair hidden from Ashley, and just a few days before the murder, he texted Alexandra saying he wanted to be with her. More than that, he told her he’d made his decision and was ready to do what was necessary to be happy.

But he didn’t explain what he meant. So, by that point, detectives had a pretty overwhelming case against James, along with a very clear motive. A week after Ashley’s death, he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He refused to admit guilt at first, but a year and a half later, in July 2024, James agreed to take a plea deal.

Under the terms of that deal, he had to confess to what he’d done, and in exchange, he would at least have the possibility of getting out one day. Before sentencing, he made a statement and apologized to Ashley’s family. He said what he had done would haunt him for the rest of his life, and that he deserved to be punished.

In the end, he was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for at least 20 years. On top of that, he was banned from having any contact with his children until they turned 18. And even after that, he still won’t be allowed to reach out unless they choose to contact him first. After James was arrested, the children went to live with Ashley’s brother and his family, and they remained there to this day.

The family eventually made the decision to move to another city because the life they had before had been destroyed for good. So, that’s where the case finally came to an end. Soon after James’s arrest, he was fired from the fire department. Later, his former department organized a fundraiser for Ashley’s children and raised around $150,000.

The first time James will be eligible to apply for parole will be in 2045. But there’s no guarantee he’ll ever get it.
