A pregnant woman was rushing to catch her train when her mother-in-law suddenly offered to drive her to a country house to make sure everything was fine with her baby.
“It would be good for your baby to spend some time somewhere peaceful,” she told her with a smile.
It was the first time in several months that her mother-in-law had spoken to her kindly.
Thérèse had no idea that the woman was actually planning something terrible.
As they approached an old abandoned railway station, her mother-in-law suddenly stopped the car.
“Something’s wrong with the car,” she said.
She slowly got out, took a few steps toward the front of the vehicle, and pretended to check the engine.
Thérèse looked at her anxiously.
“Why did we stop here?”
The woman didn’t answer.
A few seconds later, she suddenly slammed the door shut, stepped back, and pulled the key from the ignition.
“I’m sorry,” she said coldly. “My son’s life will be much easier without you.”
At first, Thérèse thought she had misheard her.
Panicking, she desperately pulled on the door handle.
But the doors were locked.
The central locking system had been disabled.
In the distance, the whistle of a train could be heard.
The ground began to tremble.
The pregnant woman struggled with all her strength to free herself, but her seat belt was stuck, and her swollen belly made it almost impossible for her to move.
Her mother-in-law had planned everything.
She already knew the train schedule and was certain that, within a few minutes, everyone would believe it had been a tragic accident.
The train was heading straight toward her.

But the very next second, someone suddenly appeared from behind the car and shouted across the tracks.
Her mother-in-law immediately went pale
The man threw himself against the door with all his strength.
“Move away from the window!” he shouted at Thérèse.
The train’s horn was becoming louder and louder.
At first, her mother-in-law still wore a look of complete confidence.
Then she noticed a railway maintenance vehicle approaching from the other side of the crossing.
The workers were already waving frantically at them in the distance.
One of them immediately alerted the control center by radio.
The train driver slammed on the brakes with all his strength.
THE RAILS SCREECHED VIOLENTLY UNDER THE WEIGHT OF THE TRAIN.
But everyone knew that at such a speed, the train could not stop instantly.
Meanwhile, the man grabbed an emergency hammer that one of the maintenance workers handed him.
With one powerful strike, he smashed the side window.
“Give me your hand!”
Thérèse desperately tried to climb out through the window.
But her seat belt was stuck.
The man reached inside, pulled out his pocketknife, and cut through the seat belt in one swift motion.
THE VERY NEXT SECOND, WITH THE HELP OF TWO WORKERS, HE PULLED THÉRÈSE OUT OF THE CAR.
They had barely taken a few steps.
The train sped past them.
The empty car was violently struck and thrown off the tracks with a deafening crash.
The sound echoed throughout the entire neighborhood.
Her mother-in-law stood frozen, unable to take her eyes off the scene.
A few minutes later, the police arrived.
The woman initially tried to claim that it had simply been a mechanical failure.
“THE CAR JUST STOPPED!”
But the railway crossing cameras had recorded everything.
They showed her stopping the engine.
They showed her putting the key in her pocket.
And they also showed her walking several meters away from the vehicle, leaving her daughter-in-law trapped inside.
Even worse, one of the workers had clearly heard what she said:
“Without you, my son will finally be happy.”
She had no excuse left.
THE POLICE ARRESTED HER ON THE SPOT.
Thérèse was taken to the hospital.
Fortunately, examinations showed that the baby had not suffered any injuries. However, because of the intense stress she had experienced, doctors kept her under observation for several days.
When Antoine learned what had happened, he rushed to the hospital immediately.
He couldn’t believe it.
“How could my own mother do something like this?”
With tears in her eyes, Thérèse simply replied:
“I don’t know.”
BUT TODAY, WE HAVE A SECOND CHANCE.
That same week, Antoine cut off all contact with his mother.
A few months later, Thérèse gave birth to their baby boy, who was perfectly healthy.
Every time they passed near that railway crossing, they thought back to that day.
