The Vietnam Nights That Left Men Shaking – and Some Never Got Warm Again 

3 in the morning on a hilltop in the Central Highlands. A 19-year-old is lying behind a berm with his rifle across his forearms, and he cannot hold still. His jaw is going, not chattering the way it does in a cartoon, but a hard, involuntary clench and release he has no vote in. His hands have stopped being useful.

 When he tries to make a fist, the fist arrives late. The man next to him is doing the same thing. Anyone watching a film about this war would know exactly what they are looking at. Two young soldiers in the dark, shaking hours from dawn. That is fear. Everybody understands that shot. Except it is not fear. It is 58°. They have been wet for 3 days, and there is wind coming across that hill.

Today, we are going into the thing nobody associates with Vietnam, and every man who was in the wrong part of it remembers. Where the cold actually was, because it was not everywhere, and that is exactly why nobody believes it. The physics of why a wet man in a light breeze loses heat faster than a dry man in a freezer.

 The equipment trap that made it worse, in which the item that would have fixed the problem was the item too heavy to carry through the day that created it. What uncontrollable shivering does to a soldier’s ability to do his job, which is a great deal more than being uncomfortable. And the injury that came out of it, which is not frostbite, which most of these men were never told the name of.

 And which for a lot of them never went away. If this is worth your time, a like helps push it in front of the men who were there. And tell me in the comments where in the world you are watching from. I read all of them. Start with the assumption because it is almost universal and it is half right. Say the word Vietnam and a picture arrives.

Heat. Steam coming off a paddy. Men stripped to the waist, sweating through their fatigues, the air thick enough to lean on. That picture is accurate. It is also the Mekong Delta and the coastal lowlands and Saigon, which is where most of the film crews were, which is why it is the only picture most people have.

The country is not one climate. It runs a long way north to south and it has mountains. Go up into the Central Highlands around Pleiku and Kontum and Dak To and you are on a plateau at real elevation. Elevation does one thing reliably. It takes the temperature down and it takes it down hardest at night when the ground gives back its heat and there is nothing overhead to hold it.

Go north instead into I Corps and you meet something different and worse. The northeast monsoon. From roughly October into the early months of the year, that part of the country gets low cloud, wind off the sea, and rain that is not the warm vertical downpour of the south. It is gray, sideways, and it does not stop for days.

So, the honest answer to why nobody believes these men is that both stories are true. And which one a man got depended on where the army sent him. A soldier in the Delta genuinely never experienced this. A man on a ridge line north of Pleiku in January experienced it every single night. Now, the physics.

 And this is where the video earns its title. The number people hang on to is the air temperature. And the air temperature is close to irrelevant here. Your body loses heat four ways, and two of them are the whole story. The first is conduction. Water pulls heat out of a body vastly faster than air does. The figure commonly cited is somewhere around 25 times faster.

 Understand what that means physically. Wet cloth against your skin is not clothing anymore. It is a heat exchanger bolted to you working continuously. And it does not stop while you sleep. The second is evaporation. Every drop of water leaving your skin or your uniform takes energy with it. And that energy comes out of you. A breeze accelerates it.

 This is the same mechanism that makes you cold getting out of a swimming pool on a warm day. And every human being on Earth has felt exactly that and never thought about it again. Now, stack them. A man who has been soaked for 3 days in moving air is running both of those at once continuously for as long as it takes. That is why 58° on that hilltop is not 58°.

It is whatever temperature your body is actually experiencing after a heat exchanger has been strapped to it and a fan turned on. And here’s the part that surprises people who have not been cold in a serious way. You do not need freezing temperatures to get into real trouble. Hypothermia is entirely achievable well above freezing, and the classic conditions for it are not arctic.

 They are wet, windy, and somewhere between 40° and 60°, which describes that hilltop precisely, and describes a Vietnamese mountain night in the monsoon almost perfectly. Now, the obvious question. The United States Army had been dealing with cold injury for half a century. Why was any of this a surprise? The answer is that it was not a surprise.

 It was a thing that had been learned, written down, and then forgotten three separate times before anybody landed in Vietnam. The first lesson was the trenches of the First World War. Standing in cold water for days destroyed feet on an industrial scale, and it got a name that stuck, trench foot. Armies wrote procedures.

Dry socks, foot inspections, get the men out of the water on a rotation. The second lesson was the Second World War, where it happened again badly in the winter fighting in Europe. Units lost enormous numbers of men to cold injury, not to enemy fire, in campaigns where the ground was wet and the temperature sat just above freezing, and nobody had planned for either.

The third was Korea, where the cold was so extreme and so central to the fighting that it is the thing that war is remembered for. Three wars, three sets of hard-won procedure, and then a theater opened in Southeast Asia, and the word that went into every planning document and every briefing and every kit list was tropical.

Tropical means heat. Heat means lightweight, breathable, ventilated. It means the sleeping bag is a low priority because who needs a sleeping bag in a jungle? It means the man designing the loadout is thinking about heat exhaustion and salt tablets and water because he is right that those will be the problem in the delta in the dry season.

The institution had a category. And the category was correct for most of the country most of the time. What it did not have was an exception for a plateau at elevation in January or for a coastal province under a northeast monsoon. And the men who ended up in those two places were carrying a kit designed by somebody thinking about a different climate.

That is the whole failure and it is not stupidity. It is the ordinary, repeated, entirely human process of an organization filing a war under one heading and then not reading its own files from the last three. Which brings us to the equipment and the trap in it. A man in the bush was carrying weight to an absolute limit.

Ammunition, water, rations, radio batteries, whatever belonged to the platoon that day. Every item had to justify itself against something else he would not be carrying. The field jacket loses that argument at 10:00 in the morning during daylight in that country. It is unusable dead weight. 3 lb of insulation that would give a man heat exhaustion if he wore it and would earn nothing but resentment if he carried So, a lot of men did not.

And at 2:00 in the morning, it is the only thing that would have worked. What he actually had was the poncho and the poncho liner. The liner is a genuinely well-designed piece of kit for this because it is nylon, and nylon does not soak up water the way wool does, and keeps working when damp. But, it is a thin quilted sheet, not a sleeping bag, and there were no sleeping bags out there.

Stay in this for a second because everyone who was in it describes the same night. You are on watch, then you are off watch. Off watch is not sleep. You lie down on ground that has been rained on for a week in clothing that has not been dry in 3 days, and you pull a thin nylon liner over yourself, and the liner is also wet because everything is wet.

You get maybe 20 minutes, then the shaking starts, and it wakes you, and it will not stop when you tell it to because it is not a decision. It is your body burning calories on purpose to make heat, and it will keep doing that until it runs out of calories or you get warm, and you are not going to get warm. So, you lie there doing the arithmetic every man out there did.

It is 2 hours until you have to be alert. Curling up tighter helps a little. Two of you sharing a liner helps a lot. And by the second month, nobody in that unit thinks anything of two grown men lying back-to-back under one sheet of nylon because the alternative is worse. And you are not allowed to move around to warm up because movement is noise and noise is the one thing you cannot afford where you are.

So, men solved it the way men solve everything in pieces with what was in reach. The single best thing you could get under you was an air mattress, the inflatable rubber one, and men who had one guarded it. That is not about softness. Cold ground pulls heat out of a body by direct contact all night long and it is relentless, and an inch of trapped air between you and the ground breaks that contact almost completely.

 A man on an air mattress under a wet liner was warmer than a man on dry ground with a jacket. The second was the heat tab, a small blue fuel tablet meant for warming rations burned inside an empty C ration can with holes punched in it. It produces almost no light if you shield it and a genuinely useful amount of heat in a small space, and men used it for coffee at 2:00 in the morning for a reason that had nothing to do with caffeine.

Something hot going into you is the fastest way to move heat to your core. The third was terrain. You get below the wind. The difference between lying on the crest of a ridge and lying 6 ft down the reverse slope is the difference between a night with wind and a night without one. And the wind is doing most of the damage.

 Men learned that in the first week and it never appeared in any manual they had been given. And the fourth was each other, which we have already covered and which no one who did it has ever been embarrassed about. That is the whole night. Then it is light and it is 90° by 10:00 and you sweat through everything you own. And that night you do it again.

Now the part that is not about comfort at all. Shivering is not a nuisance. It is a degradation of a soldier. Start with noise. Involuntary shaking makes sound. Teeth, breath, gear rattling against gear, the body shifting against wet cloth. On a night ambush or a listening post where the entire tactical value of your position is that nobody knows you are there.

 A man who cannot stop shaking is a liability and he knows it, which does not help him stop. Then fine motor control. And this is the serious one. Cold hands do not work. They do not work in a way that is difficult to appreciate until you have tried changing a magazine, working a radio handset, wiring a claymore, opening a bandage.

 Every one of those is a fine motor task and every one of them degrades badly and early in a cold, wet man well before he is in any medical danger. Then judgment. Cold slows thinking and the man it is happening to is the last one to notice. Put those together and you have a unit that is slower, louder, and worse at its job in the dark without a single enemy round having been fired.

 That is why cold is a tactical problem and not a hardship story. And it is why armies that ignore it lose things. And then there is what it did to the body over time. The injury has a name most of these men were never given non-freezing cold injury. Immersion foot is the version everybody has heard of, and trench foot is the same family under an older label from a different war.

It is important that this is not frostbite. Nothing freezes. There are no ice crystals and no blackened tissue. What happens is that prolonged cold and wet constrict the blood vessels in the extremities for far too long, and the tissue and the small nerves are damaged by being underfed with blood hour after hour after hour.

The feet go numb, then white or blotchy, then swollen and red and violently painful as circulation returns. The pain on rewarming is the part men remember, and it is worse than the numbness that preceded it. And here is the thing about that damage. Some of it does not repair. If you served, or you are the son, daughter, or widow of a man who did, it is worth knowing that cold injury is a recognized condition with recognized long-term effects, and that the rules on what is presumed connected to that service have changed

Now, the last part, which is the second half of the title. A man who took a real non-freezing cold injury in Vietnam did not simply recover and forget it.

The documented long-term picture is nerve damage and vascular damage that leaves the affected limbs permanently intolerant of cold. Not sensitive, intolerant. What that looks like 50 years later is unremarkable enough that nobody around him ever connects it to a war. He wears socks to bed in Florida. He cannot hold a cold drink for long in that hand.

His feet hurt in a supermarket freezer aisle, and he has stopped mentioning it. He will not go outside in weather that everybody else in the family describes as pleasant. His wife thinks he is fussy about the air conditioning, and she has thought that since 1972. And on the rare occasion he says out loud that he got this in Vietnam, the reaction is the same reaction he got the first time and every time since.

Somebody says, “Vietnam? Wasn’t that the hot one?” That is the real subject here, not the temperature. It is a group of men carrying a specific, physical, permanent piece of damage from an experience that the entire culture has decided did not happen because the pictures were all taken in the Delta.

 Go back to the hilltop. Two 19-year-olds behind a berm at 3:00 in the morning shaking so hard they cannot make a fist in a country everyone at home is picturing as a steam bath. They were not afraid. They were freezing in Vietnam, and nobody was ever going to believe them. If you were up in the highlands or in I Corps in the monsoon, I want to hear it.
