- Guthrie was talking about becoming a mom in her 40s when Bush Hager started tearing up.
On the September 14 episode of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, news anchor Savannah Guthrie joined her colleague and friend Jenna Bush Hager as a guest host. At one point, Guthrie spoke about having her children in her 40s as her friend teared up beside her.
“I had my babies in my 40s, which I think is a great time to have your kids. I mean, I didn’t plan it that way, but that’s how life turned out,” Guthrie told her friend.
Guthrie shares kids Vale, 12, and Charley, 9, with her husband Mike Feldman. She was 42 and 44, respectively, when she had her children. Meanwhile, Bush Hager has three kids of her own, Mila, Poppy, and Hal, whom she shares with her husband, Henry Hager.
Guthrie went on to call herself “lucky” to have kids later in life.
“I know you felt this way because you’re my friend, but like, you were also just so delighted that it could happen for you,” Bush Hager chimed in.
“I’ll never be over it,” Guthrie said. “I’m so happy.”
Bush Hager became visibly emotional as her friend went on and at one point, stopped to apologize, joking that it was because she was an “empath.”
“She is! She is!” Guthrie agreed.
“Well I know because I got to visit you with those babies,” Bush Hager then said, explaining her emotion. “I got to come and sit on your couch when you were a brand new mama.”
In fact, the pair were practically neighbors at the time.
“Find a next door neighbor who happens to be one of your best friends, or become best friends with your next door neighbor because then you can kind of raise your kids together, and then also, we could be there for each other,” Bush Hager said, before recalling one sweet moment between the friends.
“I remember once I was like, late for the bus and I called you, and I’m like, ‘Can you please get my kids, too?’”
Bush Hager then thanked her friend for always being there. “And it always made me feel more powerful to have you,” she said, tearing up again. “No, what is happening?” she exclaimed. “I need to go to time-out!”
Bush Hager recently shared a sweet anecdote about her daughter Poppy’s friendship with Guthrie’s son Charley, which goes back to when they were toddlers. “Poppy would walk Charley every single day to Pre-K and drop him off,” Bush Hager said on her podcast “Open Book With Jenna.” The teachers were like, their relationship is beyond anything, brother and sister, because no sister would do that for their little brother.”
Clearly, these two families’ bonds run very, very deep.
