over occupied Europe. In the winter of 1944, the B17 flying fortress ahead of Bob Harper took a hit and exploded. He watched it break apart in the thin air at 25,000 ft. And then he watched something else, something that did not belong in any of the official descriptions of that mission. The ball turret, the glass sphere that hung in the bomber’s belly, came off the aircraft and flew past his own.
For a split second, he thought he could see the gunner still inside it. He was looking at the machine he was sitting in, and he was looking at what would happen to him if his own bomber died in the next minute. Bob Harper was a ball turret gunner with the 381st Bomb Group flying out of Rididgewell, England. He stood 5’4 and weighed 110 lb, below the minimum size the United States military was supposed to accept.
They drafted him anyway. The demand for men had risen high enough that the smallest man on the base had become one of the most needed ones because the smallest man was the only one who could fit where this particular job had to be done. The job was this. fold himself into a sphere of aluminum armor plate and plexiglass 44 in in diameter according to the specification about 42 according to the veterans who actually sat in one and nobody in there was measuring and hang beneath the aircraft 5 mi above Germany for the 8 hours and more that a deep
mission could run two 50 caliber machine guns one on each side of his head a reflector sight suspended between his legs firing button buttons on hand grips at eye level and a view of the lower half of the world because the upper half was the bomber. He never rode in the ball for takeoff.
It hung too low, too close to the ground to risk it. He waited in the radio room while the aircraft climbed into the overcast. Only when the bomber was up did the ritual begin. The turret had to be rotated until the guns pointed straight down because only in that position did the hatch in the ball line up with the opening cut into the fuselage.
That opening was 46 and 3/4 in across. A hole cut into the belly of a 4engine bomber. The hole was cut by the same industrial base that stamped car doors. This is worth pausing on because the details of this job are stranger than the legend around it. The Sperry Company designed the ball turret.
Sperry did not build most of them. The turret was licensed out, built in quantity by the Briggs Manufacturing Company of Detroit. Automobile bodies, that was their trade, with the Emerson Electric Company of St. Louis producing others. The compartment a 19-year-old lived in over Berlin came off the assembly line of a company that made car doors for the American family sedan.
The prosecution of the air war over Germany ran on the same industrial engine that built the peacetime highway. So the hole was cut, the sphere was mounted, and the entry could happen. Feet first, heels into the footrests, kneel down, fold himself in half. There was no other way in. And there was no other way to be in it. He clipped a safety strap across himself, and he pulled the door shut behind him.
Now he could see. Now he could shoot. And now sealed in, folded up 5 mi above the earth, he could speak to the other nine men on that aircraft only by pressing a foot pedal. That was his interphone. A second pedal adjusted the range on his sight. That was the entire communications console of the most isolated man on the B17.
The machine had been designed to protect him. That is the first thing to understand because it is the hinge of the whole story. The armor plate around him, the plexiglass above his head, the interlocking fields of fire, all of it was there to answer a specific problem of the air war. The bomber was a fortress only in the directions its gunners could see.
Beneath its belly, there was a blind spot no upper gunner could reach, and the Luftwaffa had learned to exploit exactly that. The ball turret was the answer. A gun position hanging under the aircraft, covering the one direction the fortress could not defend. Mechanical stops kept his guns from firing into his own aircraft or through the propeller ark.
When he was not shooting, he was the crew’s eyes on everything they could not see. He watched the belly for battle damage. He confirmed the bomb bay doors had closed after the run. He checked whether the landing gear had actually come down. On the way home, he was the one man on the aircraft who could tell the pilot whether the bombs had hit.
He was the solution to a tactical problem. But the tactical problem, once solved, created a human one. The very protection that surrounded him, the armor, the glass, the spherical geometry of the thing, made the space inside almost uninhabitable. The armor that stopped bullets also stopped heat. The glass that gave him his view kept out nothing at all.
The engineering that made the turret strong made it from the inside a trap. And the war had not yet sent him to 25,000 ft in December. To understand what the ball turret gunner faced, you have to understand the war that put him there. Not the war as it was planned, but the war as it actually ran. The Eighth Air Force flew daylight strategic bombing over occupied Europe.
The B17 was its instrument, a 4engine bomber built around the idea that a heavily armed aircraft flying in formation could fight its way to a target and back without fighter escort. The theory was firepower. 1350 caliber machine guns arranged so that their fields of fire overlapped would make the formation itself a weapon.
German fighters would pay for every approach. The Luftvafa’s answer was to attack where the guns were not headon, where early B7s had no defense at all. And from below, the underside of the bomber, visible to no one, reachable by nothing except the ball turret. That was the hole in the fortress. And the ball turret was the plug. But the plug had to be a man.
No remote control, no servo system, no camera feed. This was 1943. And the problem of aiming two machine guns from a moving platform against a fighter closing at 400 m an hour required a human eye and a human trigger finger inside the sphere itself. And the sphere was 44 in across. The man inside it had to be small.
That is why the smallest men in the army ended up in the most exposed place on the aircraft. The military had set a minimum size for acceptance. Bob Harper stood below it, and they took him anyway because the machine had already decided what kind of man could fit inside it. The turret dictated the crew. The requirement flowed backward from machine to man.
Consider what he had in there with him. The two machine guns flanked his head like the walls of a cell. The reflector sight hung between his legs. The firing buttons sat at eye level. The waist gunners had the width of the fuselage and each other’s company.
The ball turret gunner had a sphere. He was the only man on the aircraft who could not touch another man. He was the only man who could not see another man. He was the only man who in the entire 8 hours aloft would not take a single step. And the machine that enclosed him was not built to keep him alive.
It was built to keep him shooting. There was no heating in the ball turret. There was no insulation. There was aluminum, armor plate, and plexiglass. Three materials that conduct cold hanging in a slipstream moving at 150 m an hour at an altitude where the air itself was the enemy. Every warm thing in that sphere came from the man wearing it.
The aircraft around him did nothing for him. The armor that would stop a bullet would not stop the cold. It just made the enclosure tighter, heavier, harder to escape. The design solved the tactical problem completely. It solved the human problem not at all. So the eighth air force sent its smallest men into an unheated glass ball 5 m up for hours at a time in a European winter and discovered in the hard way that air forces discover such things that the cold was a more reliable enemy than the Luftvafa. The official army medical
history recorded the conditions the bombers flew in. It is worth reading those figures slowly because they are the sort of numbers that change how you hear the rest of this story. At the 8th Air Force’s operating altitude around 25,000 ft, free air temperatures in December of 1943 ran from 22° below 0 Fahrenheit down to 45 below.
In 1944, they recorded temperatures as low as 60 below zero. 60 below. At that temperature, in an unpressurized aircraft, the wind of the slipstream feels like a solid thing. And the ball turret gunner sat at the bottom of that wind in a sphere that held no heat of its own, wearing a suit that was supposed to keep him alive.
The suits failed. The early C1 electrically heated suit was officially rated unsatisfactory. inadequate wiring, unreliable controls, and it drew more electrical power than the aircraft could reliably supply. A man at 40 below, sealed in a metal ball, discovered that the machine designed to keep him warm, could simply stop.
A break anywhere in the circuit, and the heat died everywhere because the C1 was wired in series. One fault, total darkness in the heater. The man in the ball had no way to reach the controls. No way to diagnose the fault and no way to fix it. He just went cold for however many hours remained. Consider the arithmetic of heat.
The human body produces warmth. The suit distributes it. At 40 below in a 150 mph airirstream, the cold is not a discomfort. It is a process. It is the body being drained minute by minute of its ability to function. Frostbite does not announce itself. It begins in the extremities, in the hands that have to grip the firing buttons, in the feet that press the pedals, in the face behind the rubber oxygen mask.
The man does not feel it coming. He feels the cold stop being unpleasant and start being normal. That is the moment the damage is being done. The numbers tell the story better than any description. In the 14-month period ending in December 1943, 1,634 men were removed from flying duty in the Eighth Air Force because of cold injuries.
In that same period, 1270 men were removed because of injuries received in action against the enemy. Read those two figures again. More men were taken off combat flying by the cold than by the enemy. In the first year and a half of the strategic bombing campaign, the freezing air of the upper atmosphere grounded more airmen than German fighters and flack did.
About a third of those frostbite cases required hospitalization. The distribution of the injuries tells you where the war was really being fought inside the aircraft. Wind blast, air coming through an open window or a hole in the fuselage caused 39% of the cases in that period and nearly 55% in 1944. And the men getting hurt were exactly who you would expect.
In 1943, the waist gunners, the tail gunners, the ball turret gunners, the top turret gunners, and the radio operator together accounted for 75% of all frostbite injuries in the eighth air force. The men in the exposed positions, at the open windows, and in the glass spheres, paid the cold’s price. And here is the strange moving part of this story.
They fixed it. By the last stretch of the war, from January to the 8th of May, 1945, there were 151 cold injuries across the entire 8th Air Force against 3,852 injuries from combat. The suits worked. The training worked. The men stopped freezing and started only getting shot. That inversion from a cold that was costing more airmen than the enemy to a cold so far down the list of dangers that it nearly disappeared is one of the quiet achievements of the air war.
It happened because a lot of people gradually and without drama treated the problem of a freezing man as seriously as the problem of an attacking fighter. But before it could be fixed, it had to be understood. And understanding it meant going inside the suit itself. The replacement suit was standardized in August of 1943.
It was called the F2. And the single most important change in it was invisible. The old suit was wired in series. One circuit running through everything. A break anywhere, a frayed wire, a bad connection in the harness, a round that had passed through the electrical line, killed the heat everywhere at once.
The man in the ball turret, unable to reach any of it, simply lost all warmth, and had no way to know why. The F2 was wired in parallel. Each element had its own circuit. A single break no longer left a man cold in a metal ball at 40 below. The heat elsewhere kept working. The failure stopped being catastrophic and became local, a nuisance, not a death sentence.
That is the kind of fix that wins no headlines. Nobody wrote a poem about parallel wiring. But for the men who flew, the difference was between a suit that could betray them completely at the worst possible moment and a suit that kept working when the aircraft around it was falling apart. Now consider the temperature control. The riostat for the heated suit sat under the seat inside a sphere where the gunner could barely move his arms.
Reaching it in flight was close to impossible. The knobs, the settings, the calibration, all of it was out of reach of the only man who needed it. So the gunners improvised. They regulated their own heat by doing what was actually possible. plugging the power cord in and pulling it back out. That was the thermostat, a cord, a socket, and a man deciding every few minutes whether he was closer to freezing or closer to burning. Hot, then pull the plug.
Cold, push it in over and over for 8 hours while the aircraft droned through flack and fighters, and the man had nothing else to occupy his hands. This is the detail that makes the whole position human. The army issued him a sophisticated electrically heated suit engineered to exacting specifications. And in practice, the system depended on a 19-year-old folded into a ball, playing a game of plug and unplug with his own survival, making a judgment call about his own body temperature with no instruments and no help. He could not
ask anyone. His only voice was the foot pedal. Press to transmit, release to listen. And what he mostly heard when he listened was the rest of the crew working. Navigation updates, engine checks, fighter calls, the voice of the pilot. The ball turret gunner lived at the end of that interphone line, present at every conversation, part of none of them.
The cold, meanwhile, was being fought on another front entirely because the suit addressed warmth, but there was another enemy in the sphere, and it was invisible. Above 10,000 ft, the crew went on oxygen and stayed on it. The army’s own manual is blunt about what happens if that system fails. At 26,000 ft, you have 4 to 6 minutes of useful consciousness.
At 28,000 ft, 2 to 4 minutes. At 30,000 ft, 1 to 2 minutes. At 38,000 ft, 30 seconds or less, the bombers flew at 25,000 ft. Their ball turret gunners breathe through rubber masks from tanks of oxygen hour after hour. And the manual warns of something more disturbing than the arithmetic of unconsciousness. Before you lose consciousness, you lose judgment.
The manual lists the symptoms that appear above 18,000 ft. among them purposeless movements repeated over and over. Think about what that means. A man with his mask off at 25,000 ft, calmly doing something useless, folding a piece of paper, fiddling with a glove, staring at a button with no idea that anything is wrong.
His body is dying by inches and his mind has already left the room. The danger is not that the oxygen fails. The danger is that the man does not notice. And in the ball turret, the mask was the weak point. Here is the detail that makes it real. A man breathing into rubber at 40 below is manufacturing ice with every exhale.
The moisture in his breath condenses, freezes, builds up inside the mask. The manual tells crews to wipe the moisture from inside the mask at intervals and warns that a puddle of condensed moisture sitting over the flutter valve will render it useless. The valve is the one-way door that lets the stale air out. If it freezes shut, the man suffocates in his own breath.
At altitude without warning, it gets worse above 25,000 ft. The tissues of the face contract. The rubber mask loses its flexibility. The seal gets worse, exactly when it matters most. The mask that has to fit perfectly at sea level now floats loose against a face that is shrinking in the cold. The leak is where the ice starts.
The ice is where the failure starts. So, the crew ran a roll call. Every 10 to 15 minutes above 20,000 ft, a designated crewman called an oxygen check on the interphone. Each man had a number. Each man answered in turn in order 1 2 3 4. The voice of each crewman proving he was still conscious, still breathing, still there.
If a man did not answer, someone unplugged from his own station, clipped on a portable walkaround bottle, and went to find him. That happened. It happened on an actual mission, and it happened to a real crew. John Katsaros, a left-waist gunner, was asked over the interphone to check on a tail gunner who had gone silent. He found the man unconscious, mask off at altitude.
Katsuras gave him emergency oxygen and the tail gunner came back. Think about what that rescue required. It required the discipline of the roll call itself. The number that was not answered. It required the recognition instantly that silence meant danger. It required a man to leave his own station and his own safety in the middle of a combat mission in the freezing fuselage with a bottle of emergency oxygen and no guarantee of what he would find.
That was the system working. That was the oxygen discipline doing what the army had designed it to do. And the ball turret gunner sealed in his fear, unable to move, unable to leave, participated in the roll call in the only way he could. He pressed the foot pedal. Every 15 minutes his number came up and he pressed the pedal to say he was still there.
That is the job in its purest form. A man folded into a glass ball 5 mi above Germany, proving his own existence every 15 minutes to people he could not see. The pedal was his heartbeat. The interphone was his connection to the living. The moment the pedal stopped getting pressed, the men above him knew something had gone wrong and they would come for him if they could.
The oxygen system, like the heating system, was brought to reliability by the same slow accumulation of fixes. But there was another set of problems that no wiring diagram could solve. The plain physical needs of the human body, which had to be met or not met at 25,000 ft. Could a ball turret gunner eat? Technically, yes. The manual explains exactly how.
Removing the mask to take nourishment and hot drinks on missions is listed as a legitimate reason to take it off. The technique is precise. Hold your breath. Mask off. Do not inhale. Eat. Mask back on. Then breathe. The breath is the whole trick. At 25,000 ft, the moment the mask comes off, the clock starts.
Every second without oxygen is a second of borrowed time. So the instruction is absolute. Between mask off and mask on, do not breathe the surrounding air. Hold it. Eat. Seal up. Breathe again. It turned eating into an act of breath control, a choreography of holding on. The crews were issued a chocolate bar and a fruit bar for every mission.
And the accounts agree on something that surprises almost everyone who reads it. They rarely ate them. Most airmen at altitude simply did not think about food. The body at 25,000 ft in the cold, on oxygen, running on adrenaline and fear does not send hunger signals. The bars came back uneaten, went back to the base, and were eaten on the ground.
But the preparations around eating tell you more than the eating did. The crews were fed a deliberately low gas breakfast before takeoff. This was not a question of comfort. Gas expands at altitude and a man doubled over with cramps inside a 44in ball turret is a man not defending the aircraft.
The low gas breakfast was a tactical decision. The bomber’s defensive coverage depended on the ball turret gunner not being incapacitated by his own digestion at 25,000 ft. And they shaved before missions. Every time, another small act with a tactical reason. Stubble breaks the seal between an oxygen mask and a face. The seal is what keeps the air flowing in and the ice from forming.
A man who skipped the shave was a man risking his seal, risking his oxygen, risking a roll call that would go unanswered. So the razor was part of the survival kit, not issued, not official, but universal because the consequences of skipping it were real and understood. Now, the other bodily question, the one the title of this film asks, and the one almost nobody answers.
The B17 had a relief tube, roughly 15 ft of half-in rubber tubing with a funnel on the end running through the bomb bay and venting overboard. There was also a chemical toilet, effectively a lined bucket near the main entrance door. To use either one, a man had to unplug from his oxygen, clip on a walkound bottle, physically travel through the aircraft, do what needs doing, and travel back.
The ball turret gunner could do none of that without leaving his turret entirely. And leaving the turret was not something he could do alone. In the position it flew in, with the guns down and the hatch aligned, he was sealed in. He could not get out without the men above him driving the turret back around to bring the hatch into line.
It takes a moment to understand how complete this enclosure was. He did not sit in the aircraft. He was part of it, a living component installed, not accommodated. So he simply did without for 8 hours. The low gas breakfast wasn’t just about cramps. It was about buying the aircraft from a gunner who would not need the bucket.
And there is one more detail about the relief tube. The sort of thing that appears only in crew accounts and never in a manual. The overboard outlet was near the ball turret, which meant that before anyone upstairs used it, the gunner needed warning so he could rotate his window away from what was coming. Even that, sealed in his sphere, he could not do for himself.
The men above told him. He turned the ball and the aircraft vented its waist past his position into the slipstream. There is no dignity in this job and that fact matters because the army understood something important. The man in the ball was not a passenger. He was a weapon system with a body attached. Every practical decision, the breakfast, the shave, the mask, the pedal, was an attempt to keep that body functioning in a space that was never designed to hold a human life for 8 hours.
And yet, for all the fixes and all the discipline, there was one problem no amount of engineering had solved. And it was the one that mattered most. The B17’s ball turret was fixed. It did not retract into the fuselage the way the B-24s could. On the B-24, the ball could be winched up inside the aircraft so that a man could get in and out on the ground and so the aircraft could land without the sphere hanging beneath it.
The B7’s turret hung there always in flight and on the ground. To open the hatch, the turret had to be driven back around to the gun’s down position so that the door lined up with the opening in the fuselage. That rotation required power. If the aircraft lost electrical power to the turret through battle damage, through a fire, through a generator shot out, the rotation had to be done by hand with an emergency crank from outside the turret. From outside.
That is the detail that makes the rest of the story inevitable. The ball turret gunner from inside had no emergency exit of his own, no crash axe, no jettison handle, no way to force the door against the geometry of the mount. His door was in the back of the sphere, and the sphere could not be opened from within until it was rotated from without.
He was mechanically entirely in the hands of the men above him. The honest answer to the question of whether he could get himself out is that he could not reliably. He was dependent on the men above him to let him out in a normal mission. At the end, the sequence went, the pilot calls down, the interphone clicks, the gunner answers with the pedal, the turret is rotated, the hatch comes around, and the man unfolds himself back into the fuselage.
It happened hundreds of thousands of times without incident. But it was a dependence and dependence is a risk because there were situations in which the men above him had more urgent things to do than turn the ball. Now the parachute. There was no room inside the turret for a standard backtype parachute.
It stayed in the cabin above him. What he wore instead was a safety strap and its purpose was not to save him if the aircraft died. It was to stop him falling out of the airplane. A safety strap, not a harness, not a parachute, a strap clipped on to keep him inside the ball if the aircraft broke apart beneath him. Some gunners used a smaller chest type shoot clipped to harness rings.
But the standard answer to the question of whether the ball turret gunner was wearing a parachute is simply no. Bob Harper, when asked why he left his parachute behind, said it plainly. It was tight in there, so he never brought his parachute into the turret. He made that decision every mission knowing what it meant.
And then on one mission, he watched the B7 ahead of him take a hit and explode, and he watched its ball turret come off the aircraft and fly past his own. For a split second, he thought he could see the gunner still inside it. He started bringing the parachute. That is the story in miniature. Not a hero’s declaration, not a dramatic conversion.
A man presented with a direct image of his own death made a small practical adjustment. He brought the parachute. He carried it folded inside the sphere with him or clipped to his chest because the tightness he had complained about had suddenly become less important than the alternative.
The parachute though was only half the answer because even with a shoot on his chest, he still could not get out of the turret alone. The rotation, the hatch, the men above, all of it still had to happen. The parachute solved the problem of the moment after he left the aircraft. It did not solve the problem of leaving it. And that unsolved problem produced the defining image of the job.
A story so vivid, so terrible that it became the thing most people know about the ball turret, whether they know anything else or not. The story has been told for 80 years. An eighth Air Force B7 comes home crippled, its landing gear jammed, unable to extend. The aircraft has to make a belly landing and the ball turret gunner is still inside his turret because the turret is stuck or because the gear failure has left the ball too close to the ground to lower for a landing or because the pilot simply had to put the aircraft down and there was no time to
get him out. The aircraft slides along the runway on its belly. The ball turret is crushed. The gunner dies inside it. It was told by Andy Rooney. then a correspondent for Stars and Stripes, later one of the most famous voices in American television. He told it as a story of the war he had witnessed. It became the defining image of the job, the man sealed in the glass ball, killed by the very machine that was supposed to protect him.
The records do not support it. In his own memoir, Rooney indicated that the account may have been an embellishment. Researchers have noted that he did not witness it. It is not that nothing like it ever happened. The danger was real. The fear was real. The mechanics were real. It is that the story, as told, appears to be a story. A story told so well that it became history.
Careful research has produced exactly one documented named case of a gunner dying trapped in his turret. Staff Sergeant Joseph Russo of the 100th bomb group was killed on the 31st of December 1944 and that was not a belly landing. We will come back to him. There is a real incident that very likely seeded the legend and it ends the other way.
On the 8th of April 1944, a B17 named Carolina Queen came home from a mission to Oldenberg with its landing gear failed and its ball turret stuck. The crew faced an impossible combination. They could not lower the gear and they could not retract or free the turret. A belly landing with the ball hanging beneath the aircraft would crush it and anyone inside.
The solution was improvised in the air at 25,000 ft. Tools were passed between aircraft. The crew worked on the turret mechanism while the bomber flew on and they managed to work the turret loose. It was dropped into the sea. Lieutenant Leslie Bond put the aircraft down in what was described as a perfect landing.
The damage was a bent propeller and a skinned undercarriage. Everyone walked away. It made the newspapers, which is very likely why a version of it survived, told and retold, until the version that survived was the one where the man did not get out. The newspapers reported a rescue. The legend remembered a death, but the legend was not wrong about the danger.
I was wrong about the odds. The danger was real enough to shape every part of the job. The fear was real enough that Bob Harper started bringing the parachute. What the legend got wrong was the direction of the story. The belief that the man in the ball turret was doomed when in fact the man in the ball turret was by the arithmetic of the war the safest man on the aircraft while the aircraft kept flying.
The documented case deserves its full weight because it is the counterweight to every rosy statistic. On the 31st of December 1944, the 100th bomb group, the outfit history would remember as the bloody hundth was over Germany on a mission to Reagansburg. Staff Sergeant Joseph Russo was in the ball turret of his B7. What happened next was not a belly landing.
It was a mid-air collision. Another B7 collided with his aircraft from below and the two planes locked together. In the wreckage, the ball turret and the man inside it were trapped. The airframe had been twisted around the sphere. The hatch could not be rotated into line. The men above him tried frantically to crank the turret free. They could not.
Russo was killed, trapped in his turret in the locked wreckage of the two bombers. He is the one documented named Case. The records of the 100th bomb group mark him killed in action that day. And his death is the exception that proves the rule. Because it was an exception and because it was so hard to escape that the determination of the men who tried to save him could not overcome the geometry of the wreck.
It is worth being precise about what this means. The famous story of the belly landing death has no named victim and no supporting records. The real death of a ball turret gunner trapped in his turret, the one researchers have been able to document, happened in a mid-air collision, an event that could kill any man in any position on any bomber.
Russo was not failed by the turret’s design. He was failed by physics, by the collision that crushed the aircraft around him. But the legend survived because it captured something true. Not the mechanics of the death, but the meaning of the position. The man in the ball was the only man on the aircraft who could not get out by himself.
The legend dramatized that vulnerability. The records say the vulnerability was real and that in the vast majority of cases, the men above him got him out in time. Which brings us to the hardest turn in this story, the statistics. What they really say and what they conceal. Between the 1st of June and the 31st of August 1944, the Army recorded 1,117 battle casualties across nearly 70,000 bomber sorties broken down by crew position. The numbers run like this.
Wastist gunners 233, bombarders 196, tail gunners 140, navigators 136, radio operators 95, top turret gunners 94, pilots 83, co-pilots 74, ball turret gunners 66. The man in the glass ball took 66 casualties over 3 months of combat, the lowest of any position on the aircraft. The machine that looked like a death trap was by this measure the safest place on the B7.
The armor plate that surrounded him armor plate remember that he was sealed inside was doing what it was designed to do. The ball turret was a fortress within the fortress. The Luftvafa fighter that attacked from below faced two 50 calibers and a slab of armor. And the man behind them by the arithmetic of the survey was the least likely member of the crew to be wounded.
And now the caveat that takes it all back because it matters. That survey counted only casualties aboard aircraft that came home. It has nothing at all to say about the crews that did not return. A bomber that went down over Germany with all 10 men killed or captured never made it into the survey at all. The survey measured the wounds of the living.
It could not measure the dead because the dead did not come back to be counted. In 2021, an analysis of more than 2200 individual casualty records from the 95th Bomb Group concluded that the survey captured only a fraction of the real losses and rejected its rankings on exactly that ground. The 95ths records built name by name from the men who did not come home told a different story from the surveys tidy table.
The position that looked safest in the statistics was the position whose losses were most likely to be missing from them. Because when the aircraft was shot down, the man in the ball was the man least likely to get out. The museum that owns a restored turret puts the paradox in one line.
He was the least likely member of the crew to be wounded. He was also the least likely to survive if the aircraft was shot down. There it is. The whole job in two sentences. The safest seat in the aircraft while the aircraft was flying. The worst seat in the aircraft the moment it stopped. The armor that protected him in combat was the armor that imprisoned him in disaster.
The sphere that made him hard to hit made him hard to save. So the truth is not that the ball turret was the most dangerous seat on the bomber. The truth is quieter and worse. It was the safest place to be while the aircraft was flying and the worst place to be the moment it stopped. The two things were the same fact seen from opposite sides.
The enclosure was the protection. The enclosure was the trap. He could not have one without the other. Most people know one thing about this job and they know it from a poem. In 1945, Randall Gerald published five lines. They are probably the most famous lines ever written about the air war. He never flew a combat mission. He spent the war in the United States in training commands and administrative duties.
And he wrote in a note that a bald turret was a plexiglass sphere set into the belly of a bomber inhabited by two machine guns and one man, a short small man. The last thing worth sitting with is this. The most enduring account of the ball turret gunner was written by a man who was never inside one. His five lines condensed the job into its essence.
The enclosure, the cold, the height, the death. And the poem did what the job itself could not do. It made the bald turret gunner visible. It named him. It told his death in a way that no statistic ever could. And in the same war, in the same air force, Bob Harper, 5’4, 110 lb, flew 35 missions in the real thing. He was shot down twice.
He was rescued twice from the machine that could have killed him either time. He came home and almost nobody knows his name. Think about what that says. The man who imagined the job, who never once folded himself into a ball turret, never once pressed the pedal on the oxygen check, never once watched another bombers’s turret fly past with a man inside it, became the voice of the job for generations.
The man who did it 35 times became a footnote. Neither of them is wrong. The poem is true in the way poetry is true. It tells the emotional truth of the position. The truth that no manual could. And Harper’s story is true in the way testimony is true. It tells you what the job actually was. Survivable, terrifying, and survivable again.
The two truths are not in conflict. They are the same truth from opposite sides of the glass. Gerald saw the ball from the outside and imagined death. Harper saw the ball from the inside and survived. The poem remembers death. The man’s survival, the 35 missions, the two bailouts, the parachute he finally decided to carry is the answer the poem could not give.
The Eighth Air Force lost more than 26,000 men. That is more dead than the entire United States Marine Corps lost in the whole of the Second World War. Somewhere in that number are the men who spent their war folded into a 44in ball, watching the ground from underneath, listening for their number on the interphone every 15 minutes, pressing a foot pedal to say they were still there.
Some of them were washed out of their turrets with a hose. Most of them, the majority, were not. The majority answered the roll call, came home, landed, and unfolded themselves back into the world. So, what finally made the difference? What kept the man in the ball alive for 8 hours at 60 below? Not one thing. That is the honest answer.
It was the suit wired in parallel so that one break did not leave a man cold and helpless. It was the disciplined roll call. The number answered every 15 minutes, and the man who unplugged and went looking when the number went silent. It was the low gas breakfast and the shave before takeoff. Small axe with tactical reasons.
It was the walkaround bottle that let a man leave his post to save a mate. It was the men above him, the crew, the gunners, the pilot, whose job it was every mission at the end of the ride to turn the ball and let him out. It was engineering and it was discipline and it was the simple human fact that when the ball turret gunner pressed the pedal, someone on the other end of the interphone was listening and it was luck.
The 2021 analysis of the 95th Bomb Group’s records makes the point that no one who flew should ever forget. The arithmetic of survival at 25,000 ft included a component that no writer, no engineer, and no commander could control. A ball turret gunner was safe until the aircraft stopped flying. After that, the machine that had protected him decided coldly whether he got out. The position no longer exists.
The ball turret disappeared from the sky decades ago. The bombers are gone, except for a handful preserved in museums. The men who flew them are mostly gone now, too. Bob Harper died quietly like most of his generation, his name engraved on nothing that the public would recognize. The poem outlived him. The legend outlived the records.
But the pedal, that foot pedal pressed every 15 minutes to prove a man was still alive is worth one more moment of thought because it is the whole story in a single image. the smallest man on the aircraft, in the most exposed place on the aircraft, in the machine that made him safe and made him trapped. Kept alive by the discipline of a roll call and the kindness of men he could not see. He pressed the pedal.
Someone answered, the bomber flew on. The war was won by fleets of aircraft the size of cities and armies of bombers numbered in the thousands. But it was held together hour by hour at 25,000 ft by the smallest acts of men. A cord plugged in and pulled out. A number called on the interphone, a foot pedal pressed to say, “I am still here.
