I LOVE YOU.  A small piece of bone taken from the back of a skull, kept in a pocket like a souvenir, shown off to a friend later that night with pride instead of guilt.

That object belonged to a 19-year-old who just hours earlier had been walking through a college campus expecting nothing more than a quiet evening with people she considered friends. By morning, she was gone. And the person responsible was someone who had eaten beside her, studied beside her, lived down the hall from her.

 30 years later, that decision in the woods is about to make history. Tennessee has not executed a woman in over 200 years. That is set to change. The date is already on the calendar. The appeals are running out. And the question that has followed this case for three decades still has no easy answer. How does an 18-year-old end up here?  Two young women born in different states, raised in completely different homes, who never should have crossed paths at all. Colleen Slemmer was born in September of 1975 in Pennsylvania. She grew up mostly in Florida, raised by her mother, May Martinez, and her stepfather. People who knew her describe a young woman who got along with almost everyone she met.

 She dreamed of going to college and working with computers, but her family didn’t have the money to make that happen right away. So, in 1994, Colleen found another path. A federally funded program called Job Corps, designed to give young people vocational training and a real shot at a future.

 The nearest center that offered the training she wanted was in Knoxville, She said goodbye to her family in Florida and moved into the Job Corps center on Dale Avenue. Christa Gail Pike’s story started very differently. Born in March of 1976 in West Virginia, her early life was marked by instability. By the time she was a teenager, she had already cycled through more than a dozen schools and spent time in a juvenile facility.

 It was inside that facility she first heard about Job Corps. In late 1994, at 18 years old, Pike enrolled at the same center on Dale Avenue, hoping to train as a nursing assistant. Two very different paths, landing in the exact same building. It didn’t take long for Pike to settle in. She met a fellow student named Tateroll Ship.

 He was 17, originally from Memphis, and had come to Knoxville at his mother’s urging after dropping out of high school. He was enrolled in the culinary arts program. Pike and Ship became a couple almost immediately, and what started as a relationship between two teenagers quickly became something far more intense. The two were known around the center for their shared interest in the occult and for being almost inseparable.

 But that relationship wasn’t simply two young people falling for each other. According to later court filings, Ship was controlling. He reportedly told Pike she wasn’t allowed to talk to other boys and insisted she stay near him at all times. On at least one occasion, a Job Corps staff member witnessed Ship push Pike against a wall.

 This detail matters because it’s part of a much bigger picture that would only come out years later, long after the trial had ended. At 18, Pike was already in a relationship defined by control, and that environment would shape what came next. The fourth person in this story was a young woman named Shadalla Peterson, 19 years old from Cleveland, Tennessee.

 She was close with both Pike and Ship, part of the same small social circle at the center for students, one Job Corps program. And within just a few months, one of them would be dead, and the other three would be at the center of one of the most talked about cases in Tennessee history. What happened between them didn’t come out of nowhere, and it didn’t happen all at once.

January 12th, 1995, a Thursday night at the Job Corps center on Dale Avenue. Four students signed out of the dormitory log together. Christa Pike, Tatro Ship, Shadalla Peterson, and Colleen Slemmer. On paper, it looked like nothing. Four friends heading out for the evening. The plan, as far as Colleen understood it, was simple.

 They were going to walk toward Tyson Park. Pike had told her there was marijuana waiting for them there. For Colleen, it may have looked like an olive branch, a chance to smooth things over with people she lived alongside every day. The four of them left the center on foot heading north away from Dale Avenue toward the University of Tennessee’s agricultural campus.

It was a route students walked often. Familiar streets, familiar paths. Nothing about the walk itself would have stood out to anyone watching. But somewhere along that route, near an old steam plant on the campus grounds, something shifted. According to Pike’s own later statement, she and Colleen exchanged words.

 What exactly was said in that moment isn’t fully documented, but what came next is. Colleen reportedly told Pike she was going to report her to Job Corps staff to get her removed from the program entirely. For Pike, that threat changed everything. Being removed from Job Corps wasn’t just an inconvenience. For a teenager with almost nowhere else to go, it meant losing the one structure she had left.

 What had started as an evening walk turned into something neither Colleen nor anyone back at the dormitory could have predicted. Pike made the first move. Ship joined in. What followed lasted somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour. One detail about that night has been repeated for decades, almost always credited to the wrong person.

 A symbol tied to the occult was left on Colleen’s body that night. For years, headlines and retellings attributed this to Pike. But it wasn’t her. According to Ship’s own statements, he was the one responsible. He had a long-standing fascination with the occult, and in the aftermath of what happened, he later described it as something tied to his own beliefs, an idea he said came to him only afterward.

By the time it was over, Colleen Slemmer was gone. At approximately 10:15 that night, a friend back at the Job Corps center watched three figures return from the direction of 17th Street. Pike, Ship, Peterson. Colleen was not with them. No one raised an alarm that night. No one called for help.

 The three walked back into the dormitory as if nothing had happened. But something had happened. Something that by morning would no longer be a secret. The next morning, January 13th, started like any other day on the University of Tennessee’s agricultural campus. At approximately 8:05 a.m., a university grounds department employee was making his way through the area near the campus greenhouses. Routine work.

 The kind of task he’d done countless times before. Then he noticed something near the tree line. At first, he thought it was an animal, something left behind among the debris. He moved closer to get a better look. It wasn’t an animal. He immediately contacted authorities. Officers from the Knoxville Police Department arrived shortly after, and the agricultural campus, normally quiet at that hour, became a crime scene.

 The case was assigned to Detective Randy York of the Knoxville Police Department. What he and his team found that morning told them this was not random, and whoever had done this hadn’t tried very hard to hide it. Less than 24 hours earlier, this stretch of campus had been empty and undisturbed. By the time investigators finished documenting the scene, one piece of information was already waiting for them back at the Job Corps Center on Dale Avenue.

 A dormitory log. And a name that didn’t come back the night before. Investigators didn’t have to look far. The dormitory sign-out log placed four names together on the night of January 12th. Three of those names had come back. One hadn’t. Detectives began speaking with students at the Job Corps Center on Dale Avenue, and almost immediately a pattern emerged.

 Several students told police that in In leading up to that night, Pike had talked about wanting to harm Colleen Slemmer. Some students said she had even shown them a small object afterward, claiming it had belonged to Colleen. For investigators, this wasn’t just a lead. It was a warning sign voiced before anyone even knew a crime had happened. There was more.

 A friend named Kim Iloilo came forward and told police that on January 11th, the day before the murder, Pike had pulled her aside and said she intended to hurt Colleen. When Iloilo asked why, Pike reportedly said she’d just been feeling mean that day. Iloilo hadn’t taken it seriously until the next morning.

 Investigators also recovered physical evidence connecting Pike and Ship directly to the scene. Colleen’s DNA was found on clothing belonging to both of them. And in the days following the incident, multiple people on campus reported seeing Pike and Ship wearing pentagram necklaces, the same occult imagery now tied to the case.

 With the dormitory log, witness statements, physical evidence, and Pike’s own words to Iloilo before the fact, investigators moved fast. On January 14th, just 2 days after Colleen disappeared, Knoxville police located Krista Pike and brought her in for questioning. She waived her Miranda rights without hesitation.

 What followed was a recorded statement. Pike walked detectives through the events of that night, the walk from Dale Avenue, the route toward the agricultural campus, and what happened once they got there. According to her account, the group had only meant to confront Colleen, not for things to escalate the way they did.

 The physical evidence painted a different picture. Shidala Peterson cooperated with investigators from the start. Her account, combined with Pike’s statement, Iloilo’s testimony, and the forensic evidence, gave Knoxville police everything they needed. Within 48 hours of Colleen Slemmer’s body being found, all three were in custody.

 Krista Pike, Tatro Ship, Shonda Peterson. Three students, one dormitory log, and a case that came together faster than anyone expected. But knowing who did it was only the beginning. What came next would determine the rest of Krista Pike’s life and set in motion a legal battle that three decades later still hasn’t ended.

The trial of Krista Gail Pike opened in Knox County Criminal Court in March of 1996, just over a year after Colleen Slemmer’s death.

 The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys General William Crabtree and Sally Helm, and the evidence they presented left very little room for doubt. The jury heard Pike’s own recorded statement to police. They heard about the dormitory log, the four names that went out together and the three that came back.

 They heard from Kim Iloilo, who testified that Pike had told her, the day before the murder, that she intended to harm Colleen Slemmer, and that her reason was simply that she’d felt mean that day. Iloilo also testified about what Pike told her afterward, in the hours that followed. The forensic evidence reinforced everything.

 DNA, physical evidence recovered at the scene, a timeline that piece by piece left almost nothing unaccounted for. For the defense, the strategy wasn’t to argue that Pike hadn’t been there. It was to explain why she had done what she did. They called Dr. Eric Engum, a psychologist who had evaluated Pike before trial. His testimony to the jury was specific.

 He told the court that Pike showed no signs of brain damage and no signs of insanity. What he did find was severe borderline personality disorder, along with cannabis dependence and a depressive disorder. In other words, according to the evidence available to the jury in 1996, Pike was mentally ill, but she understood what she was doing and the law held her responsible for it.

 That distinction mattered. It would matter a great deal years later when a very different picture of Pike’s mental health would emerge through her appeals. But none of that was in front of this jury. Not yet. For now, the jury had only what Dr. Engum told them and what the prosecution had laid out fact by fact.

 The jury deliberated for 2 and 1/2 hours. On March 22nd, 1996, they returned their verdict. Guilty on both counts. Premeditated first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Eight days later, on March 30th, 1996, Judge Mary Beth Leibovitz handed down the sentence. Death by electrocution for the murder conviction.

 An additional 25 years for the conspiracy charge. The jury had found two aggravating circumstances that justified the sentence. First, that the murder involved torture and abuse that went beyond what was necessary. Second, that it had been committed to prevent a lawful arrest or prosecution, a reference to Colleen’s threat to report Pike to Job Corps administration.

 At the moment of sentencing, Christa Pike was 20 years old. She became the youngest woman sentenced to death in the United States at that time, a distinction that would follow her case for the next three decades. Tatro Ship’s case was handled separately. Because he had been 17 at the time of the murder, a juvenile under the law, the death penalty was never an option for him.

His trial took place in January of 1997 and the jury convicted him of first-degree murder on both counts. For sentencing, the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous decision on life without parole. Ship received life in prison with a possibility of parole, plus a consecutive 25-year sentence for conspiracy.

 Combined, this meant decades behind bars before he’d even become eligible for release. Then there was Shadalala Peterson. Peterson had cooperated with investigators from the very beginning. In exchange for her testimony against Pike and Ship, she pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact. Her sentence was 6 years of probation.

She didn’t serve a single day in prison. Three students walked into those woods with Colleen Slemmer on January 12th, 1995. By the spring of 1997, their outcomes couldn’t have been more different. One was sentenced to death. One was sentenced to life with eventual parole eligibility. And one walked out of court and went home.

For Christa Pike, March 30th, 1996 marked the beginning of a new chapter, one that would last far longer than anyone in that courtroom could have predicted. She was transferred to a facility outside Nashville, the only woman on Tennessee’s death row. And for the next 25 years, what happened to her there would raise questions that had nothing to do with the crime she’d committed, and everything to do with what the state was doing to her in its aftermath.

Christa Pike arrived at the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center just outside Nashville in the spring of 1996. She was 20 years old, and she was the only woman on Tennessee’s death row. That distinction came with consequences nobody had fully planned for. Men on death row in Tennessee could interact with each other, work assigned jobs, and move through shared spaces under certain conditions.

 The system had been built around the assumption that death row inmates would be men. Pike didn’t fit that system. There was no group of women on death row for her to be housed alongside. For the next 25 years, that gap meant Pike spent the vast majority of her time isolated from other inmates. Not as punishment for anything she’d done inside those walls, but simply because of where she was and who she was.

Her attorneys would later describe her living space from that period in stark terms. Roughly the size of a parking space. Two and a half decades. One person. A routine that rarely changed. But Pike’s time at Deborah K. Johnson wasn’t quiet in every sense. Inside those walls, her case was about to take a turn nobody in that 1996 courtroom could have predicted.

By the early 2000s, Pike’s case had entered the appeals process. The standard path for anyone sentenced to death in Tennessee. Then in 2002, Pike did something nobody expected. Against the advice of her own attorneys, she asked the court to drop her appeal entirely. She wanted her execution to move forward as scheduled by electrocution.

 The court granted her request. A date was set. August 19th, 2002. For the first time, Christa Pike had an execution date. Then she changed her mind. Her defense team filed a motion to resume the appeals process. That motion was denied. With the execution date just over 2 weeks away, it looked like nothing could stop it. On August 2nd, 2002, with 17 days remaining, a three-judge appeals panel stepped in.

 They ruled that the appeals process should continue after all. The execution did not happen. It would be more than two decades before another date was placed on the calendar for Christa Pike. And when that date finally came, it would carry far more weight than anyone in 2002 could have imagined. Before her appeals even resumed, Christa Pike’s situation inside the Debra K.

Johnson Rehabilitation Center took another turn. On August 24th, 2001, Pike was involved in an incident with a fellow inmate named Patricia Jones. According to prison records, Pike had developed an ongoing conflict with Jones, accusing her of informing on her to staff. Investigators determined that Pike had help.

 A fellow inmate named Natasha Cornett was identified as having assisted, though there wasn’t enough evidence to bring formal charges against her. Jones survived the incident. What happened afterward is what made this case stand apart. Prison officials had been recording Pike’s phone calls. In one of those calls, speaking to her mother, Pike discussed what had happened and made it clear that if Jones came near her again, she’d do it again.

 That recording became part of the case against her. In August of 2004, nearly 3 years after the incident, Christa Pike was convicted of attempted first-degree murder for what happened to Patricia Jones. The sentence added 25 more years to a punishment that on paper she was already scheduled to serve out through execution.

For Pike’s legal team, this conviction would complicate every appeal that followed. For the state, it became one more data point in an already difficult case. In 2011, while Pike’s appeals were still working their way through the courts, something unexpected began happening at the Tennessee Prison for Women. A man named Donald Kohut, 34 years old and living in New Jersey, began writing letters to Christa Pike. By the summer of 2011, Kohut wasn’t just writing. He was making regular trips from New Jersey to Nashville to visit her in person.

During those visits, Kohut came into contact with a corrections officer named Justin Heflin, 23 years old from Chattanooga. According to investigators, the three of them developed a plan. Kohut would provide money and gifts to Heflin. In exchange, Heflin would help get Pike out of the facility. The plan never made it past the planning stage.

In March of 2012, a joint investigation involving the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Tennessee Department of Correction, and the New Jersey State Police uncovered the plot before it could move forward. Justin Heflin was indicted on four counts, including bribery, official misconduct, and conspiracy to commit escape.

 He had already been removed from his position at the Tennessee Prison for Women days earlier. He was booked into Davidson County Jail. Donald Kohut was arrested at his home in New Jersey on charges of bribery and conspiracy to commit escape. Both men were taken into custody within days of each other.

 Christa Pike remained exactly where she was. But this wouldn’t be the last time Pike’s case took a turn nobody expected. And the next one would change everything about how she was treated inside that facility. Back in 1996, the jury that sentenced Christa Pike to death heard one psychological evaluation. Severe borderline personality disorder.

Cannabis dependence. A depressive disorder. What they didn’t hear came out years later through a series of appeals that dug far deeper into Pike’s history than her original trial ever did. New evaluations found evidence of post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder. They also found something else, something that had nothing to do with how Pike was raised and everything to do with how she was born.

An organic brain malformation linked to alcohol exposure before birth. One forensic psychiatrist who reviewed the case concluded that at 18, Pike’s brain hadn’t developed the way it should have. Combined with years of trauma, she was left without the ability to manage the kind of reactions that for most people would never escalate the way hers did.

 None of this excused what happened on January 12th, 1995. Nobody involved in these later evaluations claimed that it did. But it raised a question that would follow this case for the next two decades. If the jury in 1996 had known all of this, would the outcome have been the same? For 25 years, Christa Pike’s situation inside the Debra K.

 Johnson Rehabilitation Center had remained largely unchanged. That changed in September of 2024. After years of legal effort over her conditions of confinement, Pike’s attorneys reached a settlement with state officials, finalized on September 16th, 2024. Under the new terms, Pike was granted privileges that had for decades only applied to the men on Tennessee’s death row.

 Time outside her cell, the ability to work in assigned job, shared meals with a small group of other incarcerated women. Her attorney, Angela Berman, had described Pike’s living space during those 25 years as roughly the size of a parking space. After the settlement, that space and what Pike was permitted to do outside of it finally changed.

Pike’s legal team released a statement saying she was adjusting to her new conditions, and that she was glad to work and share meals with others. They were careful to add one thing. Even with these changes, Pike remained the only woman on death row in Tennessee. The isolation that had defined her existence for a quarter of a century didn’t disappear. It simply changed shape.

 She was 48 years old, and in less than a year, her case would take its most significant turn yet. On September 30th, 2025, the Tennessee Supreme Court issued an order that put Christa Pike’s case back on the national radar. An execution date was set. September 30th, 2026. The court’s reasoning was direct. Pike had exhausted the standard three-tier appeals process available to her, and no legal basis remained to prevent the sentence from being carried out.

 Her request for clemency had already been denied. If this execution proceeds, it will mark the first time Tennessee has put a woman to death in over 200 years. This wasn’t the first time this case had been told. In May of 2024, an Investigation Discovery series covered the murder of Colleen Slemmer, walking audiences through what happened in 1995 and the trial that followed.

 But that program aired before the September 2024 settlement ending Pike’s isolation. It aired before this execution date even existed. As far as most of the public knew, this was a case that had already been closed for nearly 30 years. Everything that’s happened since the end of 25 years of isolation, this new date, and the legal fight still to come, all of it happened after that story was already considered told.

 For Pike’s legal team, the response was immediate. Within months, they would be back in court, this time challenging not whether Pike should be executed, but how. For Colleen Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, this date represented something she had waited three decades for. For the state of Tennessee, it represented something that hadn’t happened since 1819.

And for Christa Pike, now 49 years old, it meant that after 25 years without a date on the calendar, she suddenly had one again. This time, the clock was already running. Just 1 week after Pike’s execution date was set, the case took another turn, this time involving the person who had been standing beside her in those woods 30 years earlier.

 On October 8th, 2025, Tater Ship appeared before the Tennessee Board of Parole for the first time. The hearing took place at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, with Ship participating remotely. For years, the Tennessee Department of Correction had listed Ship’s parole eligibility as sometime around 2026, with later filings pointing toward 2030.

Whatever the exact timeline had been, October 2025 was when his case finally reached the board. Ship told board member Tim Gobble that he had met Pike when she first arrived at Job Corps, and that he’d reached out to comfort her early on. He acknowledged his fascination with the occult at the time, calling his judgment back then idiotic.

He said he had never denied what he did, and that he knew he was wrong. Gobble wasn’t moved. In the recording of the hearing, he told Ship directly that this was one of the most disturbing cases he’d reviewed, and that what the victim went through was hard to put into words. Gobble voted to deny parole, recommending the case be reviewed again in 5 years.

The full board took up the case in the following weeks. On October 20th, 2025, they issued their final decision. Parole denied. The next review was set for October 2031. So, nearly three decades after the crime, here’s where things stood. Shadalla Peterson, who testified against Pike and Ship, had been free since 1996, never returning to prison.

Tater Ship, the 17-year-old who avoided the death penalty because of his age, now had to wait until at least 2031 for another chance at parole. And Krista Pike, 18 at the time, just 1 year older than Ship, had an execution date on the calendar for September 30th, 2026. Three people. One night. Three completely different paths.

Through all of this, Colleen Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, had never stopped speaking about her daughter. In interviews over the years, she’s described the severity of what was done to Colleen in stark terms, recalling the number of injuries her daughter suffered as something she has never been able to forget.

 Martinez has said she hopes to be present when Pike’s execution takes place. She’s told reporters she’ll continue fighting until this is finally over, calling herself her daughter’s voice. For 30 years, Martinez has lived with a case that refuses to close. And as 2026 approached, it was about to become harder to close than ever.

 Not because anyone doubted what happened in 1995, but because of questions about how the state of Tennessee could legally carry out what it had scheduled. On January 8th, 2026, Christa Pike’s attorneys, Stephen Ferrell and Luke Innman of the Federal Defender Services of East Tennessee, filed a lawsuit in Davidson County Chancery Court.

 This wasn’t an appeal of her conviction. That door had closed years earlier. This was something different. A challenge to the method Tennessee planned to use to carry out her execution. The lawsuit named several state officials as defendants. Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada, Riverbend Maximum Security Institution Warden Kenneth Nelson, and Debra K.

 Johnson Rehabilitation Center Warden Jordan Clark. At the center of the case was Tennessee’s execution protocol, a single-drug method using pentobarbital, which replaced the state’s earlier three-drug approach. The lawsuit raised three separate arguments. The first was medical. Pike’s attorneys disclosed that she has thrombocytopenia, a condition affecting her blood’s ability to clot properly.

 According to a medical expert retained for the case, this condition, combined with Pike having small, difficult-to-access veins, created a serious risk during the execution process, one the state reportedly had no specific plan to address. The second argument was constitutional. Under Tennessee’s protocol, an inmate can avoid a mandatory 14-day isolation period before execution, but only by actively choosing electrocution as an alternative method.

 Pike’s attorneys argued that forcing someone to select how they die, or face additional isolation for not choosing, placed an unfair burden on the person facing execution. They pointed out that Pike had already spent 25 years in isolation before her 2024 settlement, isolation that had only recently come to an end. The third argument was religious.

 During her decades on death row, Pike converted to Buddhism. Her attorneys argued that Tennessee’s protocol excludes her Buddhist spiritual adviser from the execution chamber entirely, and imposes a 12-hour period before execution during which she’d have no contact with that adviser at all. This argument carried extra weight because of what had happened with other inmates.

 Pike’s attorneys pointed to three men executed in Tennessee throughout 2025, Oscar Smith in May, Byron Black in August, and Harold Nichols in December. All three had been granted exceptions to that 12-hour blackout period, allowing them contact with their spiritual advisers before their executions.

 Pike, according to her attorneys, had been granted no such exception. Three arguments, one lawsuit, and a question that went beyond Christa Pike’s case alone. Could Tennessee carry out this execution in a way that didn’t violate its own recent precedents, let alone the broader law? The state would have to respond. And when it did, the case would move somewhere most execution challenges in Tennessee no longer could.

 But before that response came, something happened at Riverbend that would change the entire conversation, not just for Pike’s case, but for how Tennessee carries out executions altogether. On May 21st, 2026, the state of Tennessee attempted to carry out an execution at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, the same facility named in Christa Pike’s pending lawsuit, under the same warden named in that lawsuit.

The inmate was Tony Carruthers, convicted in Memphis for a 1994 case involving multiple victims. His execution was scheduled for 10:00 that morning. What followed, according to witnesses present in the execution chamber, took place over more than an hour and a half. The execution team ran into significant difficulty carrying out the procedure as planned.

 Multiple attempts were made over the course of more than an hour at several different points on Carruthers’ body. Maria De Liberato, an attorney with the ACLU who was present in the chamber, later told reporters that what she witnessed was a process that went seriously wrong. Warden Kenneth Nelson, the same warden named as a defendant in Christa Pike’s lawsuit just months earlier, was present throughout.

 At approximately 1:00 that afternoon, Governor Bill Lee issued a 1-year reprieve for Carruthers. The execution was called off. For Christa Pike’s legal team, the timing was almost impossible to ignore. Back in January, their lawsuit had argued that Tennessee had no real plan for when things went wrong during an execution.

 It argued that the people carrying out these procedures weren’t properly trained or licensed for the medical tasks involved. And it argued that Pike’s specific medical conditions, her blood disorder and her difficult veins, made the risk of something going seriously wrong both real and foreseeable. 4 months later at the exact facility where Pike was scheduled to be executed under the exact warden named in her lawsuit, almost everything her attorneys had described in writing happened in front of witnesses.

 This wasn’t a hypothetical anymore. It was Tennessee’s most recent execution attempt and it had failed in the way Pike’s lawyers said it might. For a case that had already spent months arguing about risk, about training and about contingency plans, May 21st, 2026 became its strongest piece of evidence. And for Christa Pike, sitting in Nashville with an execution date just over 4 months away, what happened at Riverbend that day wasn’t just news.

It was about her own case and about a question now sitting in front of the Tennessee Supreme Court with far more urgency than it had the day before. Because if this is what happened to Tony Carruthers, a case with no documented complications like the ones Pike’s attorneys had already raised, what would it mean for someone whose own legal team had been warning about exactly this months in advance? While most of the headlines that day were about other things, a new filing landed at the Tennessee Supreme Court, one that directly connects everything we’ve covered so far to what happens next. Attorney Luke Inman filed a motion asking the court to appoint what’s called a special master, an independent reviewer who would examine exactly how Tennessee’s execution protocol would apply to Christa Pike specifically.

 The motion cited Pike’s documented medical and mental health conditions and it cited Tony Carruthers by name as evidence that Tennessee’s process carries risks the state hasn’t adequately addressed. In the filing, Inman wrote that the state of Tennessee is not able to constitutionally carry out executions, pointing directly to what happened at Riverbend just 3 weeks earlier as proof of broader concerns about training and the availability of qualified personnel.

 As of right now, the Tennessee Supreme Court has not ruled on this motion. Outside the courtroom, a separate effort has been building. A petition calling on Governor Bill Lee to commute Pike’s sentence to life in prison has gathered over 2,500 signatures since her execution date was announced. Under Tennessee’s Constitution, the governor holds the sole authority to grant that kind of relief.

 So far, he’s made no public statement on it. And then there’s Pike herself. In a documentary filmed inside the prison, Pike spoke on camera about her case. She didn’t ask for sympathy and she didn’t deny what she’d done. She told the camera she knows she doesn’t deserve to be out walking around in normal society.

 She said what she did was unacceptable and that she understands that. It’s a side of this case most people watching from home have never heard directly from her. As of this recording, here’s where everything stands. A motion the court hasn’t ruled on. A petition the governor hasn’t responded to. And an execution date that as of right now hasn’t moved.
