On June 12th, 2017, MCPD held a press conference and released both composits to the public alongside the old leads, the black Pontiac Fiero, the Marbor cigarette traces, and a $10,000 reward through Crimeolvers of Montgomery County for any information leading to an arrest. Even a killer with no criminal record, no arrests, and no DNA ever collected by police can still share fragments of genetic code with distant relatives, third cousins, fourth cousin, people who’ve never met him and have no idea he exists. As long as one of those relatives has ever taken a consumer DNA test and made their results searchable, from there, it becomes detective work of an entirely different kind.
Genealogologists start reconstructing sprawling family trees branch by branch, generation by generation, using birth records, marriage records, obituaries, and public documents to figure out how these distant DNA matches connect to one another. And more importantly, where those separate branches converge on a single living person who fits the age, sex, and geography of the suspect.
It’s slow, it’s meticulous, and in this case, it worked. Beginning in late 2019, genealogologists working the Essel case uploaded the killer’s inme profile and began mapping his extended family branch by branch. The investigation had a name, Hans Witz, 51 years old, living in Virginia Beach, Virginia, working as an auto mechanic. no criminal record whatsoever, which explained instantly and completely why Cotus had never once returned a hit on that 1992 blood sample. For nearly three decades, Witz had been hiding in plain sight, not as a fugitive, not under a fake name, not on the run. He was simply an anonymous, unremarkable man with a job and eventually a wife living an ordinary life a few hours south of the store where he’d killed someone. Hanswitz was fatally shot at the scene. 28 years after he walked out of a Komaus, Maryland grocery store having stabbed a man 29 times. Hanswitz died in his car a few blocks from the home where he lived quietly undetected for years. There would be no trial, no arraignment, no moment where James Essel’s family could sit in a courtroom and watch the man responsible answer for what he did.
The Virginia Commonwealth Attorney’s Office opened a standard review of the officer involved shooting as is required by law in any case where police use deadly force.
