Third week of September 1944 on the Stolberg corridor southeast of Arken. A German soldier presses himself against 2 feet of reinforced concrete and waits for the night to stay quiet. It doesn’t. A tracked machine the size of a small barn creeps up a muddy farm track a few hundred yards from his firing slit and stops.
Bolted to its open deck is a single barrel as thick as a telephone pole, and it levels with his slit. Every American gun that has fired on this wall so far has scarred the concrete and left it standing. The 57 mm anti-tank piece bounces off it. The 75 and 76 mm tank guns chip it. Even the standard 105 mm howitzer, the workhorse of American field artillery, cannot reliably break through.
On paper, this new machine shouldn’t change that. It is a First World War French siege gun bolted onto the hull of a tank the army had already written off two years earlier. A weapon built to sit miles behind the front and drop shells on targets its own crew would never see. Now it sits a few hundred yards from a firing slit aimed through open sights at a wall the German high command has spent 5 years calling unbreakable.
The gun fires at better than 2,000 ft pers. The shell covers the gap in under a second. The wall does not collapse on the first hit, but something inside the box does. Dust and stone chips fill the chamber. The concussion slams through the floor and the air at once. Before a second round is even loaded, the door swings open and hands come up.
The Americans who serve this gun call it King Kong. The men on the receiving end have given it a second name, one that says exactly what it does for a living, the doorner. The wall the doornocker is working through was not a bluff. Adolf Hitler ordered the west wall built in the late 1930s. A fortified belt running hundreds of miles along Germany’s western border.
And after the Normandy landings, he ordered it strengthened again in a hurry. In front of the bunkers ran rows of concrete pyramids the soldiers called dragon’s teeth, meant to stop tanks cold. Behind the teeth stood the pillboxes themselves. Thousands of them built to a small set of standard patterns so that a garrison moved from one position to the next and found the same firing slits, the same layout, the same feel.
The ordinary box carried walls around 2 ft thick. The heaviest works ran to 6 ft of reinforced concrete sunk into hillsides and linked by tunnels. Every position covered at least two others, so a man attacking one pillbox walked straight into the fire of neighbors he could not even see. By September of 1944, the wall was strong. The men holding it, in many places, were not.
German units that had been shattered retreating across France that summer were rebuilt overnight from stragglers, rear area clerks and replacements with little training and thrown into the boxes to hold a line their commanders privately doubted. One Panza division facing the American advance near Arkin could field fewer than 2,500 infantrymen, a fraction of its authorized strength.
The whole design of the west wall rested on a trade, thin manpower behind thick concrete, on the theory that the walls would do the fighting ordinary men could not. That theory only held as long as the walls actually held. That is exactly the gap General Joe Collins wanted to test when he sent his seventh corps straight at the wall in the Stalberg corridor. Armor punched through first.
The infantry left to clear the boxes one at a time belonged to the ninth infantry division. And what happened to them in the days that followed explains better than any specification sheet why the Americans needed something like King Kong so badly. The standard drill for taking a pill box was slow and it killed the men who carried it out.
Suppress the firing slits. Work a squad up through whatever dead ground the box’s own guns could not cover. get close enough to push a pole charge against the wall or bring a flamethrower to the slit. All of it done inside the crossfire of two or three neighboring boxes that were watching the whole approach.
to force the surrender of one box holding 38 men. 9inth Division soldiers spent 12 hours and used field artillery, anti-tank rockets, smoke, 24 lb of dynamite, 18 captured German mines detonated against the walls, and 400 lb of high explosive. 12 hours for one box out of thousands still standing along the border. There had to be a faster way to open a pill box than half a day and 400 lb of explosive.
The faster way had already existed for 2 years. Nobody had wanted it. The gun that became King Kong began life as the T6, a prototype tested at Abedine Proving Ground in February of 1942. Ordinance engineers had taken a heavy French field gun from the First World War, 155 mm piece the United States had built and stockpiled in large numbers, and bolted it onto the open rear deck of an M3 Lee.
The boxy American medium tank that had already been passed over for frontline combat duty. The first tests were rough. The recoil spade, the heavy blade meant to dig into the ground and hold the vehicle steady when the gun fired, kept catching on the terrain even when it was supposed to be retracted, and the hydraulic system that controlled it broke down entirely.
When the ordinance board asked for 50 of them anyway, Army ground forces objected. Toad artillery, in their view, did the same job without the expense of a self-propelled hull. Only 100 of these vehicles were ever built. 60 in 1942 and 40 more in 1943. And for a stretch of time, the whole batch sat in storage while the army argued over whether a self-propelled heavy gun was worth the trouble at all.
The invasion of France changed the argument, but not for the reason anyone might guess. It was not that someone suddenly saw King Kong as a bunker cracking machine. It was mobility. During the breakout from the Normandy hedger, towed artillery pieces took roughly six times longer to set up and displace than a self-propelled gun, and the fastmoving armored spearheads needed heavy artillery that could actually keep pace with them.
74 of the Mothboard vehicles were pulled out, sent to the Baldwin Locomotive Works, fitted with stronger suspension borrowed from the M4 Sherman, and a small gun shield, and shipped across the Atlantic by May of 1944. They landed in Normandy with six field artillery battalions, among them the 557th and 558th.
For most of that summer, the gun did precisely the job it had been designed for two years earlier, sitting well behind the infantry, firing indirectly at targets its own crew never saw. Nothing about that job explained what it would do at the West Wall. What explains it is a decision that is not written down anywhere with a name attached to it, only in the results it produced.
Somebody looked at a siege gun built to lob shells from miles away and decided to drive it up to a pillbox and aim it through open sights the way a man aims a rifle at a target he can see with his own eyes. That decision is the actual trick, and it is worth pausing on why it matters more than the size of the gun.
King Kong’s raw power to punch through concrete had existed since 1942, sitting unused in storage while the army argued about its value. The gun did not get better between 1942 and 1944. The way it was used did. Firing indirectly the way its manual described 155 mm shell dropping from miles away could not reliably find a target as small and as well protected as a single firing slit.
Firing directly at a range measured in hundreds of yards instead of miles, the same gun and the same shell could be walked onto one exact point on a wall and corrected round after round until that point failed. The question this reframes is not was the gun strong enough. It obviously was. The real question is why nobody tried firing an indirect siege gun like a giant anti-tank weapon until a wall that every other tool in the American arsenal had already failed against forced the improvisation.
The price of that improvisation fell on six men standing in the open. King Kong carried only 10 of its own shells because each one weighed about 95 and had to be lifted by hand into the brereech. A second tracked vehicle followed behind with 40 more rounds and extra crewmen to help haul them. There was no armor around the gun crew worth the name, aside from the small shield Baldwin had added, and every firing position had to be scouted before the vehicle ever showed itself because a 20tonon machine with a barrel jutting
out over its front could not simply roll up to a slit in daylight and expect to survive the experience. So the guns move forward a short distance at a time, screened by infantry, usually under cover of darkness, deployed one at a time rather than in a full battery so as not to give away where the main push would fall.
Six men stood behind a barrel the size of a telephone pole a few hundred yards from a slit that wanted them dead, and they loaded it by hand, shell after 95 lb shell. The clean, fast result at the pillbox came from a crew doing one of the least protected jobs in the entire campaign to deliver it. Even the numbers on how many shells it took don’t agree cleanly with each other.
And that disagreement is worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over at ranges between 2,000 and 4,000 yd using a special fuse designed to bite into concrete before bursting. Official afteraction figures put the requirement at three to five hits on the same spot to drive through six feet of reinforced concrete, the heaviest walls on the line.
Against the more common twoft wall, the work went faster than that. But other tallies from the same campaign describe an overall average closer to 10 rounds per target once weaker and stronger boxes are counted together. And one battery is credited with reducing more than 50 bunkers in a few weeks at that broader rate.
Three to five hits describes the best case against the toughest walls at long range. 10 rounds on average describes the whole messy campaign. Easy targets and hard ones mixed. Neither number is wrong. They are answering slightly different questions. And a viewer deserves to know that rather than hear one figure presented as the only truth.
What the numbers agree on, regardless of which count you trust, is the middle of the story. The moment the wall started to lose its meaning even before it physically failed. From the 15th to the 24th of September, a battery detached to work with the 9th Infantry Division ran 35 direct fire missions. 28 of them targeted pillboxes.
The remaining seven were fortified houses and observation posts. Some boxes took two or three hits before they gave up anything at all. 16 of the 35 missions ended in what the report calls complete success, meaning the box was destroyed outright, its wall was penetrated, or in several cases, the garrison surrendered directly to the fire of the gun itself before the wall had actually come down.
That last detail is the one worth sitting with. Men gave up because of what a single 95lb shell striking a few feet from their heads did to their bodies and their nerves. Not because a rifleman finally reached the door. When the American artillery officers wrote up those direct fire missions, they went further than counting boxes destroyed.
They interviewed the prisoners. Their conclusion drawn from what surrendered garrisons told them under questioning is a single sentence that says more than any specification could. Casualties due to concussion and the chipping of concrete had occurred in every case. Every case meaning every box they fired on, the ones that held their shape as much as the ones that failed outright.
Even where the outer wall survived, the inner face shattered and threw splinters of stone across the chamber, and the repeated shockwave of impact after impact was enough on its own to break the will of men sealed inside a room that would not stop ringing. There is one honest complication in that record, and leaving it out would make the story sound cleaner than it actually is.
Nowhere in the surviving German documents does an officer named King Kong and describe in his own words what it did to his men. The verdict comes entirely from the American side from interrogators writing down what surrendered prisoners said and from the United States Army’s own later official history of the campaign which independently reached the same conclusion from a different direction.
Guns smaller than 155 mm could not reliably break the reinforced concrete at all. And even the ones that could still needed those three to five direct hits to do it. Two separate records written years apart by two different sets of people landing on the same finding. Neither one is a German confession. Both point the same way.
The pattern held outside the 9inth division sector 2. Farther north in the 19th core zone, another battalion equipped with King Kong, the 258th Field Artillery, began its own direct fire campaign against the wall. On the 26th of September, one battery was put on direct laying with the same concrete piercing fuses.
Guns scouted forward under darkness and fired singly rather than in a group. Exactly the doctrine the 9inth Division’s battery had worked out independently days earlier. The result matched too. Boxes were penetrated. Several were reduced to rubble. And the same 3 to five hit range against the toughest walls showed up again in that battalion’s own afteraction findings.
Two different core, two different battalions arriving at the same tactic and the same rough numbers without copying each other’s homework is not a coincidence anyone can wave away. It is what happens when an improvisation is actually the correct answer to the problem in front of it. Weigh the two ways of opening a pillbox side by side because that comparison is where the machine earns its place in this story rather than just its nickname.

A box worked by King Kong cost a handful of 95lb shells fired from a few hundred yards away, and in several documented cases, the garrison gave up before the wall had even come down.
Across roughly 6 weeks in the 9inth division zone alone, more than a 100 pill boxes were cleared alongside more than a thousand mines and dozens of other obstacles, much of it booby trapped. Not all of that credit belongs to one gun, but the boxes that fell purely to gunfire fell to the biggest guns the army could get close enough to fire directly.
It is worth being careful about how far to push that credit because the gun was good and it was not magic. The same two battalions that had worked the West Wall, the 557th and the 558th, were sent south that autumn to help reduce the ring of old forts around the city of Mets in the Lraine campaign. The heavy guns hammered those fortifications the same way they had hammered the West Wall’s pill boxes.
But the American assault on one of them, Fort Dryant, ran into deep masonry galleries and a determined garrison that the same tactic could not crack. And after brutal fighting, the attack was called off without taking the fort. A gun that could open a standard concrete pillbox with a handful of well-placed rounds could not on its own reduce a purpose-built 19th century fortress with yards of masonry and earth over its vital chambers.
The clean success belonged specifically to the west wall where the concrete was thick but the design followed a standard pattern and the garrison behind it was thin. The method found its own limit at Mets, and an honest account of this story keeps both results rather than only the one that flatters the gun. The German soldier who watched that first shell crossed the gap in under a second, had grown up hearing that the West wall was the shield of the Reich, the line the French army had never dared assault directly, the reason his border was
supposed to be safe. Opening his door and stepping out with his hands raised in front of the men beside him meant admitting that promise had failed. Interrogation reports say soldiers did exactly that again and again in every box where the gun worked long enough. A man does not give up a strong position easily.
What the record actually shows is that the position stopped feeling strong the moment the same spot on the wall kept taking hits. The room filled with dust and flying stone, and the ringing in the walls would not stop. Only one of the hundred vehicles built still exists today. Kept at the Army’s artillery museum at Fort Sil in Oklahoma, an old French barrel bolted to an old American hull, easy enough to walk past without a second look.
The report the artillery crews helped write, drawn from questioning the men who actually stood inside the concrete, is still the plainest verdict anyone has put on paper about what that wall was actually worth. The soldiers who manned it had been promised 2 ft and sometimes 6 ft of concrete that no field gun could reach through.
The record says otherwise, box by box, prisoner by prisoner, for 9 days on the Stalberg corridor and again 3 weeks later up at the 19th core line. A weapon nobody in 1942 thought the army needed spent 1944 proving that the wall’s real weakness was never the concrete. It was the assumption that concrete alone could still do a soldier’s job for him.
