It was muscle memory from a career at a hospital bedside. But Hawaii is one of the most expensive places in America to build a life, and getting back into nursing, going back to school, re-establishing a medical career on the islands, required serious money.

Lisa was pragmatic. She assessed her options and made a calculated choice. She became an exotic dancer in Waikiki. The profession is often defined by stereotype, but for Lisa, the work was a means to a specific end. As her friend explained, “She wanted to be a nurse and started dancing so she could save up money to go to school.

 But with a regular job, it’s difficult to go to nursing school. Once you get involved in nightlife, it’s even harder.” Imagine the dichotomy of her existence. One part of her identity was rooted in the discipline of medicine. The other was a world of loud music and fleeting connections, performing under the name Liika. She maintained this balance in service of a single goal.

 For 4 years, this was her reality. She was saving money. She was moving forward. But in the autumn of 1994, her trajectory was about to be intercepted by someone who saw only an opportunity. In the early morning hours of October 31st, 1994, Lisa Fracassi was seen alive for the last time somewhere in the Waikiki area. After that final sighting, she vanished. She lived at 415 Nahua Street, an apartment hotel, one of those Waikiki buildings that blur the line between residence and hotel, complete with housekeeping service.

 And on her door, a do not disturb sign appeared. A detail that drew no immediate suspicion. In a building full of tourists and transient residents, it was the most ordinary thing in the world. The discovery was made not by law enforcement, but by a housekeeper delivering fresh towels to the unit. Working with the Hawaii Department of the Attorney General’s Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Division, HPD detectives sent the preserved DNA and fingerprint evidence from Lisa’s crime scene to a private lab in Virginia, Parabon NanoLabs. There, the case landed on the desk of CeCe Moore, arguably the most famous genetic genealogist in the world, a woman who has helped law enforcement identify perpetrators in dozens of violent cold cases.

Her method, take the unknown DNA profile from a crime scene and compare it against GEDmatch, a public genealogy database where individuals voluntarily upload their consumer DNA data to find relatives and can opt in to assist criminal investigations. Moore wasn’t looking for the killer himself. She was looking for a cousin, a distant relative, anyone who shared enough DNA to indicate a familial link.

She got the Fricano case in October of 2020. Two days later, she had a name. 26 years of nothing, and then 48 hours of family trees, public records, and one question, which male from this family was in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1994? One name emerged, Cecil H. Trent. Trent was 29 years old at the time of the murder and was living in Honolulu.

For the first time, investigators had a name, and an examination of the original case file confirmed something chilling. Cecil Trent’s name had never appeared, not as a suspect, not as a person of interest, not as a witness. He was a complete unknown. To this day, his relationship to Lisa, if he had one at all, remains unknown.

But as Moore herself is careful to point out, genetic genealogy is not a conviction. In her words, what she provides is a highly scientific tip. No one gets arrested on genealogy alone. The information gets handed to law enforcement who must independently verify it against the physical evidence. Detectives began to dig into Cecil Trent’s life, and what they found was another turn in the case, the one that guaranteed this story could never fully end the way anyone wanted.

As Honolulu detectives searched for Cecil H. Trent, they discovered why he had remained invisible for so long. He was dead. Trent had died in Honolulu in 2013 of congestive heart failure at the age of 48. He had lived another 19 years as a free man after Lisa’s murder. There would be no arrest, no trial, no courtroom accountability.

But the investigation was not over. While legal justice was impossible, factual justice, the truth, was still within reach, and investigators needed to prove it beyond doubt. The first confirmation came from the standard procedures that follow a death. When someone dies, their fingerprints are routinely taken for formal identification.

Investigators located the postmortem fingerprint records from Trent’s death in 2013 and compared them to the latent prints lifted from Lisa’s apartment in 1994, including the print recovered from the telephone at the crime scene. It was a match. By March of 2021, investigators had their link.

 But they went one step further. Detectives collected a fresh DNA sample from one of Trent’s close living relatives and compared it against the DNA recovered from the cigarette butt and the condom. Match. The genealogy had provided the name. The fingerprint on the telephone, the very source of the murder weapon, placed him at the scene.

And the family DNA confirmed the biological evidence was his. Three independent lines of proof, all converging on one man. Cecil H. Trent was the man in Lisa Fracassi’s apartment. He was the man who strangled her with a telephone cord and disappeared into the night. In April of 2022, the Honolulu Police Department officially announced that the 1994 murder of Lisa Fracassi was solved, naming Cecil H.

 Trent as the primary and likely only suspect, and closing the case after 28 years. The resolution of this case is a bittersweet one. There is relief in having an answer, but as C.C. Moore stated, “We won’t see justice in this case since he can’t be arrested and tried, but hopefully it provides some answers to those who cared about her and loved her.

” And that is the most important component. The end of this story is not about the killer. It is about Lisa. She was Lisa Lika Fracassi, an honor student from Niagara Falls, a registered nurse who healed people in a Fort Lauderdale hospital, a woman who moved to paradise and took a hard, unglamorous path to rebuild her career on her own terms.
