Montana Called Ted Turner Crazy for 30 Years — Now His 51,000 Bison Rule 2 Million Acres

 

In 1989, one of the most powerful men in America bought about 114,000 acres of overgrazed Montana grassland. Dust blowing off the ridges, the rivers running murky, the pasture cropped down to almost nothing, and told his ranch managers to get rid of the cows. All of them. Then he told them to pull out the fences. Every one.

 Miles and miles of barbed wire that had cut the property into paddocks for 80 years. And he told them what he wanted to bring back instead. Bison. American bison. The animal that had once darkened these hills in herds of 10,000. The animal that had been shot down to a handful of survivors by the 1880s. The ranchers of Gallatin County thought he was crazy.

Radio hosts in Bozeman spread rumors that he was flying wolves in by helicopter. Mike Clark, who ran the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, put it this way. When he bought that ranch, it pissed off every rancher in Montana. For a long time, they looked like they were right. He lost money on those bison the first year. And the second, and the third.

 He lost money on that herd every single year for three decades in a row. For 22 years, the ranchers who had laughed at him were right. Then quietly, they were not. Because 36 years later, that same land is one of the most complete wild ecosystems in the lower 48 states. 4,500 bison graze where the cattle used to starve.

A pack of wolves runs the ridgelines. Wolves that were never released there. Wolves that walked in on their own. Elk that used to number in the hundreds now number in the thousands. Native cutthroat trout are spawning in creeks that had not seen them in a hundred years. In 2024, biologists documented almost every large native mammal of the American West living on that single property.

The man’s name was Ted Turner. He founded CNN. He owned the Atlanta Braves. He married Jane Fonda. He was one of the loudest, most ridiculed men in American business. He was gone by the spring of 2026, and the land he was laughed at for buying is now protected forever. This is the story of the Flying D Ranch and of a promise a 10-year-old boy made in 1948.

Turner was not the only rancher in America who cared about the land. Bison are not a magic species that repair every field they touch. And the Flying D took one man’s money and one man’s willingness to lose it for 35 years to run this experiment. It is not a template most ranchers can copy. But something did happen on that ranch that nobody ordered, nobody released, and nobody quite expected.

 Stick around and subscribe because the way those wolves got there will leave you speechless. 200 years ago, the Great Plains were the most productive grazing ecosystem on Earth. Between 30 and 60 million American bison moved across them in herds so large that a single herd could take 3 days to pass. In a single human lifetime, we killed almost all of them.

By 1884, the count was down to about 300. 300 from tens of millions. Then we replaced them with cattle. Cattle looks similar to bison. They eat grass. They weigh about the same. But three differences turned out to matter more than anyone realized. The first is how much they eat and how far they walk. A cow spends about 45% of its day grazing.

>> [music] >> A bison spends about 25. And where a cattle herd works a foraging patch of a few hundred hectares, a bison herd will range across more than 11,000 before it circles back. [music] Cattle rework the same square. Bison rewrite the whole map. The second is what bison do with their feet. Bison wallow.

 They dig depressions in the dirt and roll [music] in them. Those wallows catch rain and become tiny wetlands. Cattle don’t wallow. Nothing else on the Great Plains does. The third is what happens underneath the surface. Bison manure disperses a different mix of soil bacteria and fungi. Nitrogen cycles faster. Over decades, a bison catchment and a cattle catchment on identical soil aren’t the same land anymore.

When we removed the bison, the whole prairie went brittle. Fewer bison meant less wallowing. Less wallowing meant fewer wetlands. Fewer wetlands meant fewer insects, fewer grassland birds, fewer seeds dispersed, and lower plant diversity, and the whole system unraveled from the top down, one link at a time.

 None of that was understood in 1910, when Charles Ankeny II and Harry Child pieced together a sprawling cattle operation on the eastern edge of the Madison Range and called it the Flying D. They ran 14,000 cattle. They ran it hard for 80 years. By the time it came up for sale in 1989, the rivers ran murky.

 The grass was gone. The Flying D was on life support. It came onto the market for $20 187 an acre. Nobody wanted it. Ted Turner had been thinking about land like that since he was 10 years old. He grew up in Cincinnati. His father, a difficult and often brutal man, sent him to boarding school young. Around 1948, he read a National Geographic article about how close the American bison had come to extinction.

He said later, on the record, that he decided then and there at 10 that if he could, he would help bring the bison back. But he had to make money first. He spent the next 40 years doing exactly that. He inherited his father’s advertising business at 24, built a struggling Atlanta UHF television station into a superstation, and in 1980 launched CNN, the first 24-hour news network in the world.

He bought his first bison in 1976, his first ranch in 1987, and the Flying D 2 years after that. Russ Miller, the first general manager of Turner’s western ranches, described what happened next. Turner brought them into the house at Spanish Creek with a folio of watercolor engravings by Karl Bodmer, the Swiss artist who painted the Great Plains in the 1830s.

Turner opened it to a bison painting, looked out at his new ranch, at the Angus cattle, the tractors, the power lines, and said, “Gone, gone, gone.” He placed a conservation easement on the ranch almost immediately through the Nature Conservancy, one of the largest private easements in America at the time, which meant no matter what happened to him, the Flying D could never be subdivided or developed.

 He walked away in one signature from what his biographer Todd Wilkinson estimated was hundreds of millions of dollars in development value. Wanting a wild landscape and getting one were two different things. Nature doesn’t reboot on command. Turner removed the cattle, pulled the interior fencing out, restored more than 5,000 acres of former cropland back to native grazing land, a process that in prairie restoration runs decades, not seasons.

Turner wasn’t trying to prove the ranch worked by 2005, he was trying to make sure it would still be working in 2090. Then the physics of what happens on that kind of land takes over. A cow grazes like a lawnmower. Same height, same paddock, every day. It cuts the grass down to the level its jaw can reach and stays there until the ranch hand moves it.

A bison grazes like a storm. Hard, fast, moving, and gone before the damage sets in. A bison herd hits an area in a dense group, tears through the grass in one intense pulse, and walks away for weeks or months. In that gap, the grass does exactly what it evolved to do. It regrows. It sends up new blades.

 It puts down deeper roots. The grass of the Great Plains evolved for the storm. It never evolved for the mower. Every bison in that storm is also a walking seed carrier. When European researchers examined a single bison herd, they identified more than 1,000 seeds from 32 different plant species >> [music] >> being transported across the range as passive cargo.

Every animal is planting a garden without knowing it. The strongest evidence of how large that effect actually is doesn’t come from the flying D itself. It comes from Konza Prairie in Kansas, run jointly by Kansas State University and The Nature Conservancy. In 2022, Zack Ratajczak and his team published 29 years of data in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Bison catchments had 86% more native plant diversity than the ungrazed catchments. Cattle catchments [music] improved too, but by only about 30%, less than half the bison effect. >> [music] >> And when the region hit its worst drought in 40 years, the bison catchments held their gains. Based on the biology involved, one plausible reading is that the same effect is at work on Turner’s ranch.

Same continent, same grasses, same animal. But this is inference, not direct measurement. The record shows no peer-reviewed study specifically on the flying D itself, and the ecology community treats the extrapolation as reasonable, but formally open. There’s also a real counter argument. Ranchers who practice adaptive multi-paddock [music] grazing, moving cattle in dense groups, resting pastures long, argue that a well-managed cow can do most of what a bison does.

The current literature suggests the scientific gap narrows under optimal management. What Turner was betting on wasn’t just biology, it was time. Almost nobody in ranching or anywhere else gets to make that bet. Turner’s critics expected the whole thing to collapse inside a decade. Cattlemen predicted the herd would starve on that overgrazed ground.

Ecologists warned that grasslands take generations to reset, if they reset at all. Turner just waited. What actually happened was faster. Within a decade, the rivers ran clearer. Elk populations that had been shot back to a few hundred started to recover, and by the mid-2000s could exceed 2,000 head. Then the wolves came back.

Turner didn’t release them. In 1995, Yellowstone had reintroduced wolves after a 70-year absence in a project led by biologist Mike Phillips. Packs multiplied and began to disperse. Based on decades of wolf dispersal research, we can describe roughly what happened. Young adults get pushed out of crowded packs, follow river drainages and elk migration routes, and cover 50 miles in a single night until they find territory and prey enough to hold them.

Around 2003, a small group followed the Gallatin and Madison drainages, roughly 100 miles north of Yellowstone. They walked onto the Flying D. They stayed. Turner issued an order that became legendary in Montana conservation circles. The wolves were not to be shot, not even if they killed bison. Some did. The wolves stayed anyway.

Today, the pack is one of the largest in the lower 48, studied full-time by biologist Val Asher on Turner’s funding. What followed was a cascade. More bison meant more wallowing. More wallowing meant more wetlands, more insects, more grassland birds. More grass meant more elk. More elk meant more prey for wolves.

 More wolves meant fewer weak elk and a healthier herd. A healthier herd meant more grazing pressure in the right places at the right times. The system was re-wiring itself from the ground up. The trout came back, too, though that took work. Cherry Creek had been colonized by invasive fish that had outcompeted the native West Slope cutthroat trout.

Turner’s biologists, in partnership with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, reset the stream in four phases using rotenone, a natural compound from tropical plant roots that blocks fish oxygen absorption and breaks down in sunlight within days. They then restocked with more than 45,000 cutthroat eggs from multiple genetic strains.

Cherry Creek is now one of the largest stretches of pure native cutthroat habitat in the lower 48. By 2024, biologists surveying the ranch counted almost every large native mammal of the contiguous United States. The one exception was the Canada lynx, which is a boreal forest specialist, and Flying D grassland was never lynx country to begin with.

The bison didn’t bring the wildlife back. The bison brought the conditions back. And once the conditions were right, the wildlife brought itself. Stand on the northern boundary of the Flying D today near Gallatin Gateway and look south. On the north side, outside the easement, you see the outskirts of Bozeman.

Subdivisions, trophy homes on 5-acre plots. The pattern that has consumed the mountain west. On the south side, past the ranch gate, none of it exists. Because of a legal document Turner signed in 1989. A conservation easement splits property rights in two. The part you can sell and the part you can’t. Turner kept the part he could sell.

The rights to build, drill, cut timber, or subdivide were given permanently to The Nature Conservancy. Not sold, given. When Turner’s heirs eventually sell the ranch, the buyer will inherit the easement with it. They can never buy the development rights back. Turner Enterprises, at its peak, ran more than 50,000 bison across roughly 2 million acres.

 A private herd larger than every public herd in North America combined. In 2011, Turner told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle it was the first year in 30 years he had ever made money on bison. He hadn’t done it for money. He’d done it because he liked bison. His critics didn’t disappear. Dennis Tilton, a rancher from Livingston, called the transfer of Yellowstone bison to Turner’s ranches robbing from the public domain.

Others objected that tying wildlife recovery so closely to commercial hunting and meat, a bison hunt at the Flying D costs about $4,000, is a compromise that shouldn’t be normalized. Those arguments are honest and worth having, but the ranch is still there and the easement is still binding. Ted Turner passed away at his home in Lamont, Florida in the first week of May 2026.

He was 87. He had been living for 8 years with Lewy body dementia, a diagnosis he disclosed in 2018 because he wanted people to understand it wasn’t Alzheimer’s. The obituaries covered the media empire, CNN, TBS, the Braves, the America’s Cup, the billion-dollar gift to the United Nations.

 They spent less time on the ranches. But in a column published in late May, Todd Wilkinson, his biographer of more than three decades, described a conversation from Turner’s last months. Turner, by then, had trouble with names and dates. He had asked to see Mike Phillips, the biologist who had led the Yellowstone wolf reintroduction and co-founded the Turner Endangered Species Fund with him in 1997.

Phillips sat down. Turner was quiet for a long time. Then he looked at him and asked the only question he had left. “Mike, we did okay, didn’t we?” Phillips told him that in his professional opinion, and Phillips has won the highest honor in American wildlife biology, Turner had done more as a private citizen for native species restoration than any individual in the history of the world.

Wilkinson wrote that Turner choked up and cried. [music] Turner Enterprises confirmed after his death that the ranches remain protected. The easements are permanent. The Turner Endangered Species Fund continues its work. The Turner Institute of Eco Agriculture, endowed in 2021, continues the research on how what worked at the Flying D can spread to other properties.

 If it spreads, the Flying D will be remembered as the first proof. If it doesn’t, the ranch is still one of the largest private wildlife refuges in North America. A 10-year-old boy read an article about bison in a magazine. 77 years later, 4,500 of them are grazing on land that will be theirs forever.
