This Case Can Make You Question Humanity. The Bizarre Story of Lisa Carlson 

A young mother was found dead in her own home. And from the very beginning, detectives knew they were dealing with an unusually complicated case. The scene raised more questions than answers, and almost everyone close to the victim seemed to have something important to say. But even then, no one could have imagined where the investigation would eventually lead and how this high-profile case would ultimately end.

Lisa Carlson was born on June 28th, 1971 in San Diego, California. She was the older of two daughters and her father was in the military, so the family moved around all the time. They lived in different cities and states and even spent some time in Panama. Lisa was very energetic and determined. She got along easily with other people, but she also wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself or speak her mind when something bothered her.

 When Lisa was 17, her family was finally able to settle down in one place and moved to Tacoma, Washington. She finished high school and then trained as a nursing assistant. Lisa wanted to do something that would actually help other people, so she chose to work with those who couldn’t look after themselves. She found a job at a rehabilitation center for people with disabilities and that was where she met a nurse named Daniel.

 The two started dating and their relationship moved quickly. Less than a year later, they were married and not long after that, Lisa gave birth to twin boys, Nikki and Chris. Lisa was thrilled to become a mother, but she and Daniel soon ran into a problem. Paying a babysitter to watch both boys would have taken almost her entire paycheck.

 So, Lisa decided to leave her job and stay home with them. The problem was that Daniel’s salary alone wasn’t enough to cover even their basic expenses. His parents eventually offered to let the young family live on their large property out in the country. They set up a trailer there for Lisa, Daniel, and the boys, which meant the couple no longer had to pay rent and took a lot of pressure off their finances.

 Daniel’s parents also worked at the same rehabilitation center so he could ride to work with them and save some more money. By the summer of 1998, Lisa was still living there with her husband and children. She was 27 years old and the twins were three. On July 18th, at around 9:00 p.m., Daniel called 911.

 He told the dispatcher that he had just come home from work and found his wife dead. She was lying on the couch surrounded by blood and her body was cold. Their children were unharmed because they were over at their grandparents house. When police arrived, they quickly confirmed that Lisa was dead and there was nothing they could do for her.

 She had two wounds to her head that appeared to be gunshot wounds along with another wound to her chest. Three 22 caliber shell casings were also found on the floor near the couch. Lisa’s body was partially covered with a blanket, and when officers lifted it, they found something quite unexpected. Her pants had been pulled down, and she was holding a remote control for an adult toy that was lying nearby.

 There was also an explicit video playing on the TV in the living room, although it had been paused. Lisa’s body was taken to the medical examiner. While investigators continued searching the trailer, one thing immediately stood out. The place was a mess. Almost every cabinet and drawer had been opened and their contents were scattered across the floor, making it look as though someone had been searching the home during a robbery.

 At the same time, there were no signs of forced entry. Daniel did, however, mention one important detail. When he came to the front door, he had expected it to be locked, or at least secured with the chain, but instead he found it open. While the crime scene team worked inside the trailer, officers took an initial statement from Daniel. Over the next few hours, his behavior began raising questions for several reasons.

 For one thing, he seemed unusually calm for someone who had just found his wife murdered. He approached officers several times to ask whether he could go back inside to get food for the boys and take his clothes out of the washing machine. His 911 call also struck investigators as strange. Daniel sounded completely calm, as though he were describing what he had just eaten for breakfast rather than telling a dispatcher that he had just found his wife dead.

 Even more strange, from the very beginning of the call, he made a point of saying that he had been at work and had only just come home. Daniel, however, gave police a reason for why he seemed so detached. He explained that although he and Lisa were still legally married, their relationship had effectively been over for quite some time.

 According to Daniel, they had decided to separate about a year and a half earlier. But their financial situation made it impossible for either of them to simply move out and start over. After Lisa had the twins and stopped working, the couple increasingly relied on credit cards just to cover basic expenses. Well, Daniel’s salary wasn’t enough to keep up with the debt.

Eventually, they filed for bankruptcy, and the process dragged on for months, leaving Lisa with no realistic way to move out on her own. At the same time, she still couldn’t return to work while taking care of two young children, which meant she had little choice but to continue living with Daniel. about 6 months before her death.

 The two had signed a separation agreement that they planned to use later as the basis for a divorce. They slept in separate rooms and for all practical purposes lived more like roommates than a married couple. Daniel also told police that Lisa had been seeing another man named Shawn for quite some time. She would often spend the night at Shaun’s house once Daniel came home from work and could take care of the boys, then return before Daniel had to leave for his next shift.

 In fact, Daniel said Lisa had spent the night before her murder at Shawn’s house and came back to the trailer at around 1:30 p.m. just as Daniel was getting ready to leave for work. After speaking with Daniel, police went straight to Shawn. His reaction to the news of Lisa’s death was very different. He became visibly nervous, seemed agitated, and smoked one cigarette after another while speaking with detectives.

 Shawn admitted that he and Lisa had been in a relationship for quite some time. He explained that he had been friends with Daniel since childhood, and when Daniel first married Lisa, his relationship with her had been purely platonic. But after Lisa and Daniel had essentially decided to separate, Shawn and Lisa began seeing each other.

 Over the following months, the two started making plans for a future together, and Lisa decided that she wanted to move with the boys and Shawn to Arizona, where his parents lived. She hoped to start over there and build a new life. And according to Shawn, she had some very serious reasons for wanting to leave. Shawn told investigators that Lisa and Daniel’s marriage had gradually become more and more troubled.

 They were already struggling financially, but Daniel only made things worse. At one point, Lisa discovered that he had been hiding a large number of lottery tickets and credit cards from her. She later learned that Daniel had secretly taken on even more debt, making an already difficult financial situation even worse.

 At the same time, the couple was arguing more often, and Daniel’s behavior was becoming increasingly aggressive. Lisa told people that he would yell at her, throw things in her direction, and had even become physically violent with her. During one particular incident, Daniel grabbed Lisa by the neck, and she became afraid that he might strangle her.

Sometime later, Lisa turned on a tape recorder and brought up what had happened, hoping to get Daniel to admit it on tape. When she told him that she was afraid for her life after he tried to strangle her, Daniel replied that he hadn’t meant to hurt her and he hadn’t even squeezed her neck very hard. Lisa later gave the tape to Shawn and asked him to turn it over to police if anything ever happened to her.

 Shawn also told detectives one more important detail. According to him, Lisa had made the final decision to leave with him and the boys on the very day she was killed. The plan was for her to wait until Daniel left for work, take the children to Shaun’s house, and then leave with him for Arizona, where his parents lived.

 Before heading out of state, they planned to stop by Lisa’s parents’ home so she could say goodbye. All of this seemed to point heavily in Daniel’s direction, but Shawn clarified one important thing. Lisa had kept the plan completely secret from her husband and had no intention of telling him that she was leaving.

 According to Shawn, she was afraid Daniel might hurt her if he found out. So, as far as he knew, Daniel wasn’t supposed to know anything about it. Detectives weren’t ready to rule Shawn out either, and they asked where he had been after Lisa left his house. Shawn said he stayed home and spent time on internet forums.

 Since this was 1998 and the detectives themselves weren’t particularly familiar with how that kind of activity could be checked, they passed the information along to specialists who could verify his story. Police then spoke with Lisa’s family and friends, and they heard many of the same concerns. Lisa had repeatedly talked about the problems in her marriage, and as time went on, she became increasingly worried about her own safety.

 Her parents urged her to move out and get away from Daniel as soon as possible, but Lisa told them she couldn’t do that until the bankruptcy process was finished. When detectives looked into it, they learned that the bankruptcy was actually expected to be finalized within just a few days. At that point, investigators began seriously considering whether Daniel could have killed Lisa after somehow finding out that she planned to leave him and take the children with her.

 There was just one major problem with that theory. Daniel had been at work for almost the entire day. The medical examiner was unable to determine Lisa’s exact time of death and could only narrow it down to sometime that afternoon. Lisa had left Shawn’s house at around 12:30 p.m. And since the drive back to the trailer took just under an hour, she should have arrived home at roughly 1:30.

 Daniel’s shift, meanwhile, was supposed to begin at 12:15 p.m., which initially seemed to leave him with too little time to kill Lisa and still make it to work. But detectives soon learned one suspicious detail. His supervisor said Daniel had called about 15 minutes before his shift and told him he was going to be a little late.

 He ultimately didn’t arrive until around 300 p.m., which meant that, at least in theory, he could have had enough time to commit the murder. Still, investigators quickly ran into several problems with that theory. While they were gathering information about Lisa’s life, crime scene experts were examining the trailer, and what they found raised some important questions.

 First, they doubted that robbery had actually been the motive. Despite the mess inside the trailer, nothing of value appeared to be missing, leading investigators to believe the apparent burglary may have been staged. They also analyzed the blood splatter on the wall and on Lisa’s body and were able to determine that she had most likely been sitting upright when she was first shot in the head.

According to the medical examiner, that first shot would not have killed her immediately, but it likely left her paralyzed. Investigators also noticed an unusually large amount of blood in Lisa’s hair. that supported the idea that after the first shot, she had remained sitting upright for at least some period of time, allowing the blood to collect there.

 Then, based on smeared blood found on the couch, investigators concluded that someone had pulled Lisa downward and laid her flat. As her blood soaked hair dragged across the back of the couch, it left a visible trail behind. Crime scene photos also showed unusual bunching in Lisa’s sweater, which led experts to believe that whoever moved her body had pulled her down by the clothing.

 All of this made one thing clear. Lisa could not have pulled down her own pants and underwear. By that point, she would already have been paralyzed by the first gunshot, so investigators believed the killer was the one who removed them. The adult toy also appeared to have been placed beside her afterward, although the reason for doing so was still unclear.

 The blood on the toy supported that theory as well. Investigators determined that it had been transferred there through direct contact rather than blood splatter, meaning the killer likely handled it only after moving Lisa onto her back and getting blood on his hands. At some point during all of this, Lisa was shot two more times, and only then the killer covered her body with a blanket.

 That detail seemed especially strange. Whoever had done this had apparently gone to considerable effort to create the impression that Lisa had been shot while watching an explicit movie, arranging the scene in a very deliberate and disturbing way. And yet, after setting everything up, the killer covered her with a blanket and hid much of it from view.

 The vide tape itself raised another question. Although the TV was still on, the movie had been paused. If Lisa had really been watching it when she was attacked, the tape should have continued playing until it reached the end, unless the killer had taken the remote and deliberately paused it. By this point, detectives had very little doubt that they were looking at an elaborate staged crime scene, but that only created more problems with the theory that Daniel had done it.

 Based on everything investigators had reconstructed, the killer would have needed time not only to shoot Lisa, but also to move her body, arrange the scene, go through the trailer to make it look like a robbery, then clean himself up, and change clothes since he almost certainly would have gotten blood on him.

 Daniel’s drive to work took about 30 minutes, which left him roughly an hour to commit the crime before he would have needed to leave. Technically, it was possible, but investigators were beginning to question whether he could realistically have done everything in that amount of time. Soon, forensics found an even stronger reason to doubt his involvement.

 While examining Lisa’s belongings, they turned to her computer and discovered something unexpected. Someone had powered it on at 3:40 p.m., long after Daniel had already started his shift. That person then tried to open an internet browser, but there was a problem. Just one day before the murder, Lisa had taken the computer tower to Shawn so he could update some of the software, and for some reason, Shawn had deleted the browser Lisa normally used to access her email.

 The computer record showed that someone tried to download and reinstall the browser, but was unsuccessful. And at 4:18 p.m., the computer was shut down. That meant Daniel could not have been the person using it. By then, dozens of people had already seen him at work about a 30-inut drive from the trailer. Another interesting discovery came from the answering machine inside Lisa’s trailer.

 It contained three messages from Daniel’s mother. As we remember, during the first hours of the investigation, she told police that the twins had unexpectedly shown up at her house at around 5:45 p.m. They said their mother was asleep, which immediately struck their grandmother as strange. The boys were only 3 years old and had never walked over there by themselves before.

 The trailer was about 130 yard from the house with a stretch of woods between the two properties, so it wasn’t exactly an easy walk for two small children. Daniel’s mother called the trailer several times trying to wake Lisa up, but no one answered. She eventually left a few messages telling her to get up and come pick up the boys.

 But detectives noticed something very strange. When they spoke with Lisa’s mother, she said she had also tried calling her daughter at around 6:20 p.m. Because Lisa had failed to show up for the meeting they had planned before she left the state. Lisa didn’t answer, so her mother left a message on the answering machine.

 The problem was that no such message was there. Investigators sent the answering machine tape to experts who found signs that it had been tampered with. It appeared that someone had removed the cassette, rewound it to the beginning of the message Lisa’s mother had left, and then used Carol’s next call to record over it.

 That discovery raised a whole new set of questions and led detectives to take a much closer look at Daniel’s family. To their surprise, they learned that only a few months before her death, Lisa had obtained a restraining order against Daryl, Daniel’s father. Police began asking Lisa’s family and friends about her relationship with Daniel’s parents, and what they heard painted a troubling picture.

 According to Shawn, Daniel’s mother had disliked Lisa almost from the moment they met. Carol didn’t think she was good enough for her son, but Daniel continued seeing her anyway. Shawn also said that Daniel had always been extremely dependent on his mother and that their relationship was unusually close.

 Even after he became an adult, Carol still had a great deal of control over him. And the fact that she couldn’t convince him to end his relationship with Lisa seemed to bother her deeply. Things only became worse after Lisa and Daniel had the twins. Carol began criticizing Lisa constantly, telling her she was raising the boys incorrectly.

 didn’t cook or clean well enough and generally wasn’t doing a good job as either a wife or a mother. On top of that, Carol behaved as though she had not just an equal say in the children’s lives, but the right to make decisions about them regardless of what Lisa wanted. She would sometimes take the boys to her house without asking, drive them somewhere without telling Lisa, and generally act as though they were her own children rather than her grandchildren.

 When talking about the twins to other people, Carol would even refer to them as my babies. Once Lisa and Daniel moved into the trailer, her mother-in-law’s behavior became almost impossible for Lisa to tolerate. They had already seen each other nearly every day at work because Daniel’s parents were employed at the same rehabilitation center.

 But now, Carol was living only about 100 yards away. She constantly came over to the trailer and told Lisa how she should raise the boys, handle the house, and essentially live her life. Sometimes she would even go through Lisa’s belongings or enter the trailer when no one was home and search through it. Lisa tried to set boundaries, but Carol simply ignored them.

 Daniel didn’t see his mother’s behavior as a problem either and usually took her side. According to Shawn, Daniel’s refusal to stand up for Lisa was one of the main things that gradually destroyed their marriage. When Carol learned that the couple had agreed to eventually divorce, she was furious and blamed Lisa for what was happening. Later, once Lisa began seeing Shawn, Carol accused her of cheating on Daniel and destroying their family.

 At one point, Carol and her husband burst into the trailer while Lisa and Shawn were there together. They apparently hoped to catch the two of them in an intimate situation, but Lisa and Shawn were simply sitting and talking. Even so, Carol began insulting Lisa while Daryl grabbed her by the neck and threw her to the floor before turning on Shawn.

 After that, the couple called the police and Daryl was arrested. Lisa obtained a restraining order against him afterward, but she chose not to press charges because she didn’t want to make an already terrible family situation even worse. From that point on, Lisa was essentially counting the days until she could finally get away.

 At the same time, she kept her plans secret because she was afraid of Daniel’s family and what they might do if they learned she intended to take the boys and move to another state. After hearing all of this, detectives began wondering whether Lisa’s mother-in-law could somehow have been involved in the murder.

 They had spoken with Carol during the first hours of the investigation, and at the time, she said she had been home for most of the day, but hadn’t noticed anything unusual because a small stretch of woods separated her house from the trailer. But when police asked why she had called Lisa several times and told her to come get the boys, yet never walked over to the trailer herself, Carol gave more than one explanation.

At first, she said she assumed Lisa was asleep and had no reason to think anything was wrong. Then she told one officer that she hadn’t gone over because of the restraining order Lisa had obtained. The problem was that the order applied to Carol’s husband, not to Carol herself. Another suspicious detail emerged when investigators asked Daniel and his parents whether they owned any firearms.

 Daniel told them that less than a year earlier he and his mother had purchased a semi-automatic 22 caliber handgun, the same caliber of weapon used to kill Lisa. Daniel insisted, however, that he no longer had the gun and had traded it away for ammunition sometime earlier. His parents also owned a rifle, but it was broken and did not match the murder weapon.

Daniel did mention that he had previously kept the handgun at his parents house, which gave detectives enough reason to obtain a search warrant for the property. Inside, they found 22 caliber ammunition, but testing it showed that it did not match the rounds used to kill Lisa, and the handgun itself was nowhere to be found.

 During the search, however, police came across something else that caught their attention. There were several notebooks filled with detailed notes about Lisa and almost every aspect of her daily life. Someone had been writing down basically every detail of her life by hand. Where she went, who came to see her, when she spent time with Shawn, how she cared for the twins, what condition the trailer was in, whether she cooked, whether she cleaned, and anything else that could potentially be used to criticize her. It appeared that Daniel’s

family may have been collecting the information he used during the divorce, hoping to portray Lisa as an unfit mother and help Daniel gain custody of the twins. Then investigators made another unexpected discovery. The entries in the notebooks had been written in at least four different handwritings.

 When experts analyzed them, they determined that the notes had been made not only by Daniel and his parents, but also by his sister. In other words, practically the entire family had been keeping track of Lisa’s every move, documenting anything they thought could be later used against her. None of this proved that any of them had been involved in the murder, but near the end of one notebook, detectives found a particularly troubling entry.

Carol had apparently tried to calculate how much prison time Daniel might receive if he were arrested for murder. The note had been written after Lisa’s death, although investigators could not determine exactly when. There was one more detail that caught their attention. Daniel’s parents had an answering machine in their home with a cassette rewind function, leading detectives to consider whether the tape from Lisa’s trailer could have been rewound on that machine.

 Still, none of this could really be called evidence, even circumstantial. And detectives knew it was nowhere near enough to make an arrest. Even so, they were beginning to suspect that Daniel’s family may have been directly involved in Lisa’s murder. One possibility was that Daniel had shot her before leaving for work, while his mother stayed behind in the trailer to stage the robbery and arrange Lisa’s body as part of the coverup.

 Another theory was that Carol may have done everything herself, and whether Daniel knew anything about it remained unclear. When it came to motive, investigators had a much clearer picture. By this point, they had little doubt that Daniel’s family hated Lisa and did not want her to take the twins away. Multiple witnesses also told police that Carol seemed to think of the boys almost as her own children and saw Lisa as the person standing between her and them.

Detectives also looked into whether any of Daniel’s other relatives could have been directly involved, but they were able to confirm that both his father and sister were elsewhere around the time of the murder. So neither was considered a likely participant in the crime itself. Over the next several days, investigators spoke with a wider circle of people who knew Daniel’s family, and those conversations produced several more suspicious details.

 One of Carol’s co-workers said Carol had complained about Lisa to her many times and repeatedly said that she would never allow Lisa to take the children away from her. But perhaps the strangest account came from Carol’s own sister. She told police that after the murder, Carol had shared a very different version of what happened when the twins arrived at her house.

 As we remember, Carol originally told detectives that the boys came over and simply said their mother was asleep. But according to her sister, Carol later claimed that the children had actually said they left the trailer because they were trying to get away from a bad man. That version seemed extremely difficult to believe because if the boys had really said something like that, Carol’s behavior made almost no sense.

 It would mean that she ignored what two frightened children had told her for hours, never called the police, and calmly remained at home just 100 yards from the trailer without apparently being concerned about what might be happening there. Even so, Carol denied all these allegations when police questioned her further. Daniel also continued insisting that he had nothing to do with Lisa’s murder, although he admitted that he hated her and blamed her for the collapse of their marriage.

Over the next several weeks, detectives kept searching for anything that could move the case forward. And eventually, they did find one potentially important piece of evidence. Remember how during the first hours of the investigation, Daniel asked police if he could take his clothes out of the washing machine? The officers refused and instead collected the clothing as possible evidence.

 When experts examined it, they found traces of blood that appeared to have been washed out. But the samples were far too small for DNA testing. So once again, investigators had something suspicious, but nothing that brought them any closer to making an arrest. Over the following months, the case made virtually no progress.

 The twins remained with their father and his family and eventually the investigation went cold. Several years passed and during that time, Daniel showed almost no interest in how the case was progressing. The one exception came when he visited the medical examiner’s office and asked whether Lisa’s death certificate could be changed so that the estimated time of death would make it clear that he had already been at work when she was killed.

 About 3 years after Lisa’s death in July of 2001, detectives met with prosecutors to go over the entire case again. Once more, they came away believing that someone in Daniel’s family had almost certainly been involved. But after all that time, they still had no direct evidence linking either Daniel or Carol to the murder. Even so, investigators were determined to solve the high-profile case.

 And during that meeting, they decided to move forward and see whether they could win convictions based on the circumstantial evidence. On July 20th, police went to the rehabilitation center where Daniel and Carol worked, and both were taken into custody. Prosecutors decided not to build their case around a specific theory of who had actually pulled the trigger and who had staged the scene inside the trailer.

 They knew there was simply no way to prove those details without stronger evidence. So instead, both Daniel and Carol were charged with first-degree murder. They continued to deny any involvement after their arrests, and both sides began preparing for the trial. Daniel and Carol remained behind bars for the next year and a half, and the trial finally began in February of 2003, nearly 5 years after Lisa’s murder.

 The prosecution argued that Daniel and his mother had planned in advance to get rid of Lisa so she couldn’t take the twins away from them. According to prosecutors, Daniel waited for Lisa to return from Shaun’s house that day. And shortly after she came home, either he or Carol shot her while she was sitting on the couch.

 They believed the murder weapon was the same 22 caliber handgun Daniel had once owned and claimed to have traded for ammunition long before Lisa’s death. Although there was no evidence to support that theory, Daniel then left for work to create himself an alibi while Carol stayed behind and began staging the trailer to make the murder look like a robbery.

 Prosecutors also focused on the adult toy and the explicit videotape that had been playing in front of Lisa. In their view, Carol had arranged that part of the scene as an additional way to humiliate a woman she deeply hated. They also believed Carol had tried to access Lisa’s email from her computer, most likely so she could send a message from Lisa’s account to create the impression that Lisa was still alive after Daniel had already arrived at work.

 What Carol couldn’t have known was that just one day earlier, Shawn had removed Lisa’s usual browser from the computer. So, that part of the plan failed. After that, prosecutors believed Carol began calling Lisa’s phone and leaving messages telling her to wake up and come get the boys. All to make it seem as though she had no idea Lisa was already dead.

 But then something happened that complicated the plan. Lisa’s mother called the trailer and left her own message on the answering machine. According to the prosecution, that message created a serious problem because it could interfere with the timeline Carol intended to give police. The answering machine itself did not record the time of each message, but Lisa’s mother clearly remembered when she had called.

Since her message had been recorded after Carol’s first message, it established the order of the calls and could help investigators reconstruct the timeline. Prosecutors argued that this was why Carol removed the cassette, took it back to her own house, rewound it, then returned it to Lisa’s answering machine, and used her next call to record over the message from Lisa’s mother.

 The defense challenged nearly every piece of circumstantial evidence presented by the prosecution and repeatedly emphasized one main point. After 3 years of investigation, police still had not found a single piece of solid evidence proving that Daniel or Carol had killed Lisa. The trial was a difficult one, and the arguments from both sides stretched on for nearly 2 months.

 In the end, however, the jury found both Daniel and Carol guilty, and each of them was sentenced to 36 years and 8 months in prison. The sentence was longer than what would normally have been expected under the charges. But the judge imposed the additional time because of what had been done to Lisa’s body after the murder, treating it as an aggravating factor.

 But the story still wasn’t over. In the years that followed, their attorneys continued fighting the convictions, claiming that some of the circumstantial evidence had been obtained illegally. Their main focus was the notebooks found inside Carol’s home, where she and other relatives had documented almost every move Lisa made. According to the defense, the search warrant allowed police to look for a gun and ammunition, but not private written records.

 Three years later, an appeals court overturned both convictions and ordered new trials. That left prosecutors with a difficult choice. Try Daniel and Carol again without a significant portion of the evidence from the first trial or offer them plea deals. Almost a year later, they chose the second option. Carol was offered reduced charges.

 Three counts of secondderee assault and one count related to the mistreatment of Lisa’s remains. She accepted the deal and was sentenced to 9 years in prison. Then it was Daniel’s turn. Prosecutors offered him a deal on the charge of secondderee murder and he agreed. Daniel pleaded guilty and received a 23-year sentence. Although even that was not quite the end of the story.

 Both of them received credit for all the time they had already spent behind bars. Because of that, Carol was released less than a year after accepting her plea deal, and has remained free ever since. Daniel was released in 2022, roughly 14 years after entering his plea. As for the twins, they had been living with their father and grandmother until Daniel and Carol were arrested.

 Afterward, the boys spent some time in the custody of Daniel’s father, the same man who had attacked Lisa only a few months before her murder. Lisa’s parents, meanwhile, were given only limited visitation. At some point later in the twins childhood, custody was transferred to Daniel’s sister, who raised them until they reached adulthood.

 They are now 31 years old, but neither has ever spoken publicly about the case, and there is no information about whether they still have any relationship with Carol or Daniel. So, in that sense, the case eventually came to an end. But the outcome left Lisa’s family with a great deal of bitterness. Not only did custody of the twins remain within Daniel’s family, but they were also outraged that Carol ultimately spent only about 7 years behind bars.

 Both Lisa’s relatives and the detectives who worked the case believe that Carol had been the driving force behind the murder, even if she may not have been the person who physically pulled the trigger.
