He Buried His Wife… Then Became Rich—The Shocking Truth Behind a “Holy” Family

Welcome back to our journey into the world’s most shocking case files. Today, we travel to Indianapolis, the capital city of Indiana. This city is widely celebrated as a stunning symbol of intersection, where modern innovation seamlessly blends with its primal origins, and ancient traditions meet cutting-edge technology.
It proudly boasts world-renowned art museums that showcase peak cultural achievements spanning centuries. Every year, Indianapolis takes center stage as it hosts countless world-class festivals and events. Most legendary among them being the iconic Indy 500 automobile race. Yet, in our narrative today, this peaceful city, a place that should have been a sanctuary of peace and a literal home of God on Earth for the Blackburn family, suddenly transformed into the stage of a horrific tragedy, violently ripping apart the quiet night of a
suburb that had never before been tarnished by the stain of violent crime. Everything began on a fateful winter morning, November 10, 2015. A car quietly turned into and parked outside a cozy home nestled on the tranquil street of Sunnyfield Court. It belonged to Davey Blackburn, a promising young local pastor.
He had just returned home from his daily physical workout at the gym, a routine that remained rigidly unchangeable. Initially, Davey intended to open the door and step out immediately. However, an unexpected phone call rang out, keeping him inside the cabin for a few extra minutes. Once the call concluded, the young pastor casually stepped out of the vehicle, grabbed his gym bag, and walked straight toward the house.
The front door was completely unlocked, but the exact moment he pushed the door open and stepped across the threshold, Davey froze entirely. His whole body locked up, and the gym bag slipped from his hand, crashing freely onto the floor. Before his eyes was an unimaginable gurken scene. His beloved wife lay motionless on the living room floor, her body submerged in a massive, rapidly expanding pool of blood.
The scene at Sunnyfield Court, blindsided and in a state of profound shock by this brutal reality, Davey rushed desperately to the side of his beloved wife. He trembling checked her condition, frantically trying to find a pulse, and hurriedly dialed 911. The poor young woman was still holding onto a faint, fleeting breath, hovering precariously between life and death.
The living room scene where the tragedy occurred was a battlefield of total chaos. Household belongings were strewn everywhere, and cabinets had been aggressively ransacked. The ill-fated woman’s purse had been systematically cleaned out, left without a single penny. Yet, the most haunting and heartbreaking element inside the house at that moment was not the bloody wreckage on the first floor, but the innocent, terrified crying of a toddler echoing down from the second floor of the home.
Upon receiving the emergency call, first responders and medical personnel rapidly reached the house in just eight short minutes. The entire perimeter surrounding Sunnyfield Court was immediately cordoned off with yellow police tape. The home, which once served as a place to preach God’s message of love, was now packed with police officers, detectives, and violent crime investigators.
The victim was urgently transported by paramedics to the nearest hospital in critical condition. She was quickly identified as 28-year-old Amanda Blackburn. Who could commit such a monstrous act against a pregnant woman inside her own sanctuary? To find out, we must retrace the timeline to ensure we do not miss a single critical detail of this tragic story.
The life of an angel. To understand the deeper underlying causes and why Amanda’s death triggered such a massive wave of public fury. We must look back at the entirety of her life. Our tragic victim, Amanda Grace Byers, was born on July 31, 1987 in the city of Muskegon, Michigan. She began her early education in Indianapolis, Indiana, before relocating with her family to Elkhart in 1995.
In this new environment, Amanda excelled academically, graduating from the Elkhart Christian Academy in 2006 with a solid academic foundation and a clear calling. She went on to graduate from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida in 2008, earning her associate degree. Amanda was blessed to be raised in a profoundly devout home, where Christianity and the divine power of God’s word were always placed above all else as a guiding compass for every action.
Amanda’s father was none other than the lead pastor of the First Baptist Church located in Elkhart, Indiana. Consequently, from her earliest childhood, she memorized all the long-standing religious traditions of the church, from profound sermons to sacred Psalms praising the almighty. She revered and practiced them unconditionally with absolute faith.
While other children her age rushed to grow up quickly to taste the rebellious flavors of adult life, attending all-night parties or diving into fleeting romances, Amanda chose an entirely different path. She dedicated her profound love to Jesus Christ and harbored a burning dream of serving him for the rest of her days.
Those around her often remarked that God seemed to return that love, deeply cherishing his pure daughter. After all, he had created her like an angel walking among mortals. Amanda was a slender girl with radiant blonde hair, a wide gentle smile, and a face that constantly reflected her sincere intentions.
But her innate beauty was not just skin-deep. The thoughts and heart of this young woman were exceptionally pure and pristine. In every daily action and word, Amanda manifested an immense love and deep concern for everyone around her. Remarkably, as a young teenager, Amanda took a solemn vow of purity before God, promising never to kiss any man until the day she stood at the altar.
She kept that sacred covenant flawlessly. But eventually, the young woman’s heart beat faster as she found the true singular love of her life. That man of destiny was Davey Blackburn, a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Davey studied religion at the prestigious Southern Wesleyan University and came from a multi-generational Christian family.
Davey and Amanda met for the first time on a blind date at a concert featuring the popular Christian band Hawk Nelson, a meeting orchestrated by her sister and Davey’s best friend. A fairy-tale romance. At the time, they were attending two different universities separated by vast geographic distances.
However, whenever breaks arrived, the young lovers spent every waking moment together. It was a pure romance in the truest sense, a beautiful spiritual bond entirely unburdened by worldly lust. They strolled through the streets, comfortably sharing the deepest thoughts of their souls and reading their favorite scripture passages together.
They never grew bored in each other’s presence because they knew how to savor the smallest moments, constantly sharing genuine jokes to bring laughter to one another. Once before preparing to return to their respective schools, Davey and Amanda playfully held a mock milkshake drinking contest, which Amanda lost.
Davey humorously gave her the affectionate nickname Milk Girl. It was in that exact moment, watching her smile, that he realized he had found the only woman he ever wanted to marry. The couple accepted a long-distance relationship for an extended period. They continuously messaged each other through apps, called one another, and spoke for hours every single day.
They dedicated every holiday to being together. They valued their relationship so deeply that they proactively sought premarital counseling for a long time to learn how to communicate properly and build an ironclad foundation. On August 1, 2008, Amanda and Davey Blackburn S fairytale wedding officially took place, surrounded by the blessings of their families.
Following the wedding, Davey proudly told friends that from the moment he placed their very first kiss on Amanda’s lips, he knew that by God’s design, an unbreakable bond would always exist between them. For the first four years of their marriage, the Blackburns lived and worked in South Carolina. Davey served as an associate pastor at NewSpring Church under the mentorship of Pastor Perry Noble.
However, the ambitious young man hungered for more and proposed that Amanda move to Indianapolis to plant a brand new church specifically targeting young adults at the new plant. Davey took on the roles of youth pastor, production director, and assistant pastor. Amanda was initially highly reluctant to leave her family and loved ones behind, struggling internally for a long time with the decision to leave South Carolina.
But she ultimately submitted after her husband assured her that God undoubtedly had magnificent things in store for them. In 2012, the Blackburns officially relocated from South Carolina to Indianapolis to establish an independent church on the city’s north side. The ministry targeted young adults, which was highly evident in the weekly video logs the couple uploaded to their website, offering advice on relationships, conflict resolution, and what the Bible says about intimacy.
In 2014, their household welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Weston Blackburn. Their life was profoundly happy and fulfilled. They owned a comfortable home on a quiet street and loved their ministry work, which regularly drew massive crowds of young people. Their sermons were listened to and deeply trusted.
They lived in an environment of beautiful harmony and understanding, but November 10, 2015, arrived and altered the family’s trajectory forever. A state in mourning at approximately 8:30 a.m., paramedics arrived at the Blackburn home at 2800 Sunnyfield Court. The pregnant young woman was instantly transported to the hospital, where she was immediately placed on a ventilator and subjected to emergency resuscitation efforts.
Tragically, Amanda passed away the following day along with her unborn child. It was later revealed that the family was expecting a baby girl, who was posthumously named Evie Grace when laid to rest inside her mother’s arms. Her death triggered an outpouring of grief and prayers across social media platforms for an extended period as friends, relatives, and total strangers expressed their mourning through public tributes.
On November 11, the day Amanda was officially pronounced dead, Davie released an emotional statement declaring that Amanda had made loving and serving everyone she met her life’s ultimate mission. She spent her life sharing Christ as her personal savior with countless people. Through her death and legacy, many more will come to a saving faith in Christ.
I know for sure that she would want me to continue what we started here in Indy. I believe firmly that God is still good, that he is turning our tragedy into a triumph, and the best is truly yet to come, Davie wrote in his deeply moving statement. The murder of the pregnant woman was not only a profound shock to the entire Orthodox Christian community, but a severe blow to the peace of the entire state.
Enraged citizens demanded that authorities swiftly track down and severely punish whoever had ruthlessly taken the lives of Amanda and her unborn child. In his initial sworn interview, Davie Blackburn recounted finding his wife, Amanda, injured and unconscious on the living room floor. She was partially nude with her undergarments lying nearby, face down in a pool of blood.
The pastor told investigators that he left the house around 6:00 a.m. to head to the gym for his workout. Upon leaving, he did not lock the front door. Everyone does it, right? Going out without locking the door, he argued to detectives. It is difficult to say whether the criminals would have been deterred had Davie used his key, but it was painfully obvious that had the door been locked, they could not have entered the home so effortlessly, buying Amanda precious time to contact emergency services, but that did not
happen, and the attack left Amanda with three gunshot wounds, one of which was to her head. The 12-minute mystery, however, within the trial transcripts, David Blackburn’s testimony was augmented by the deposition of Scott Floyd, the first responder from the Indianapolis Fire Department, who arrived at the scene following David’s 911 call.
Floyd stated that when they pulled up to the home, David Blackburn was standing at the edge of the driveway with his hands covered in blood. Floyd noted that David was unnaturally calm at the time. According to the first responder, David claimed he did not comprehend what had happened to his wife. He maintained that she was lying on the floor, and he simply could not wake her up.
David testified that he returned home from the gym around 7:30 a.m. and continued a phone conversation with his friend, Kenneth Wagner. Out in the yard, occasionally walking along the property and peering through the front windows to see if young Weston was awake. He stated he eventually ended the call and walked inside.
At 8:10 a.m., he discovered Amanda lying face down on the floor. He claimed he thought she was sick or unconscious. Yet, he did not dial emergency services until 8:22 a.m. He took a grueling 12 minutes to place the call. In a life or death crisis, 12 minutes is an eternity. He continuously rationalized that he merely assumed something was wrong with her pregnancy, or that his wife had grown dizzy and fallen.
But how could he completely fail to notice brain tissue lying barely 1.5 m from her body? Emergency medical professional Scott Floyd testified that the blood on the victim’s head had already coagulated, leading him to believe the gunshot wound to the head had occurred hours prior. When asked if he had called anyone else, Davey stated that after dialing 911, he called his father.
Nonetheless, authorities verified his timeline using surveillance footage from the gym, and he was quickly cleared as a direct suspect. The autopsy conducted on November 12 revealed that the young woman had been shot in the back of the head. She also sustained a gunshot wound to her left forearm that traveled into her biceps muscle and a penetrating wound to her upper back.
Additionally, there were numerous abrasions on her left cheek, a torn lip, and a fractured lower front tooth. These extensive injuries clearly indicated that a violent, desperate struggle had occurred between Amanda and her assailant. Consequently, a massive, exhaustive investigation was rapidly launched.
Surveillance footage from neighboring streets was meticulously reviewed, and neighbors and family acquaintances were interviewed. One neighbor reported hearing gunshots approximately 35 minutes after Davey left the house for his gym workout. Given Amanda’s injuries and the theft of her bank cards and her MacBook bag, the initial theory was established as a robbery.
During the investigation, police determined that on the fateful morning of November 10, 2015, a succession of emergency calls had reported residential break-ins at different homes near the Blackburn residence. Around 5:20 a.m., a woman reported that upon waking up, she discovered her mobile phone, laptop, purse, and keys had vanished from her apartment, and her car was missing from the parking lot.
Approximately 3 hours later, another woman reported a burglary at a home on Sunnyfield Court. Someone had cut the porch screen, breached the interior, and stolen four televisions, a MacBook Pro, a Tiffany pearl necklace, and a pink women’s sweater. The clues in pink, exactly 5 minutes after that report.
Another resident from the Sunnyfield Court area called emergency services. It was Davey Blackburn. Police immediately sought the connection between this homicide and the other burglaries that occurred in the neighborhood that morning. The critical clues used to track the three suspects were the stolen pink sweater, cell phone call logs, and an ATM receipt.
The receipt and the pink sweater were recovered inside the stolen Chrysler Sebring, which was found abandoned near the Blackburn house. The debit card listed on the receipt matched Amanda’s stolen card. Investigators obtained a search warrant for the ATM security cameras and found video capturing a man using the stolen pink sweater to mask his face from the lens while withdrawing cash.
DNA testing from the sweater confirmed Jaylen Watson as one of the primary suspects. The affidavit stated that mobile phone records were pulled because Watson’s S number was already in the database, as he was currently out on bail for a separate burglary. Call logs for Diante Gordon were also obtained. These records placed both Watson’s and Gordon’s phones directly in the area when the crime occurred and near the Chase Bank where Amanda’s debit card was utilized on the day of the murder.
Larry Taylor was the final piece of the criminal puzzle. By reviewing area surveillance footage, police identified Taylor’s phone number and tracked down his address. Furthermore, a firearm discovered near the Blackburn residence was analyzed by crime lab technicians and proven to be the murder weapon. Following 2 weeks of relentless investigation, police officially issued arrest warrants for all three suspects.
Under interrogation, Larry Taylor confessed that he shot the woman twice because she lunged at him and he did not want her scratching him. Then, as she collapsed, he leaned down, delivered an execution shot to the back of her head, and coldly stood over her, watching the victim bleed to death. The trio had targeted the Blackburn home for a robbery.
Their initial objective merely being to score some quick cash and valuables. They targeted the Blackburn residence because the husband had accidentally left the front door unlocked while going to the gym. Once inside, they immediately cornered Amanda to keep her restrained. Taylor brutally used his firearm to pistol-whip her unconscious.
Watson and Gordon, seeing the woman lying motionless, wanted to leave. They grabbed Amanda’s stolen bank cards and drove off to locate an ATM. The group attempted to withdraw 500 from a Chase Bank ATM, which failed, but successfully withdrew 400 from another machine. It was here that they were captured on camera masking their faces with the pink sweater.
Afterward, they drove back to the Blackburn house to pick up Taylor. During his accomplices’ absence, a literal life-or-death struggle had transpired inside the house. Amanda regained consciousness after the beating and courageously fought her attacker, who subsequently wrestled the pregnant woman to the floor when his accomplices returned.
Taylor climbed into the vehicle and casually admitted to the group that he had shot Amanda. The verdict and the pivot. According to court documents, the Blackburn home was the third target in a violent crime spree executed that day by Taylor, Watson and Gordon. The most critical piece of evidence was Watson’s DNA found on the pink sweater stolen in the prior burglary.
Realizing they were caught red-handed, Watson and Gordon agreed to cooperate with the investigation in exchange for reduced sentences. Larry Taylor also waived his right to silence, admitting he was near the burglary scene. Though deceptively claiming he was too confused to remember the details, the county prosecutor’s office officially indicted the defendants on a mountain of severe charges, including murder, burglary, and armed robbery.
Although the woman’s undergarments had been removed and her shirt pulled up, prosecutors stated there was insufficient forensic evidence to legally prove a charge of rape. After the initial 2021 trial was declared a mistrial due to a juror exposure leak, the final trial was held in October 2022 under meticulous preparation.
Larry Jo Taylor was officially sentenced to 86 years at the Indiana Department of Correction for the murder of Amanda Blackburn and other burglary-related counts. His co-defendants, Diante Gordon and Jalen Watson, received prison terms ranging from 20 to 35 years under plea agreements for testifying against Taylor.
Legal justice was finally served with absolute severity. Amanda Blackburn’s death sent shockwaves through thousands of lives, including the head of the state government. Her funeral service at a Christian church drew over 2,000 attendees, including Governor Mike Pence. Resonate Church established a memorial fund to help cover the Blackburn family’s funeral and medical expenses.
Once justice was served via the convictions of the three perpetrators, Davey Blackburn expressed relief that those responsible for slaughtering his wife were off the streets and could never harm anyone else. Amazingly, he repeatedly declared to the media that he had actively chosen to forgive Amanda’s killers. “Even though everything inside me wants to hate, be angry, and despair, I am choosing the path of forgiveness, tolerance, and hope.
” The Nothing Is Wasted Empire, the Amanda Blackburn case, garnered massive national and international media coverage. But it was at this exact turning point that the narrative veered down a highly controversial path, shifting public sentiment from profound mourning to absolute bewilderment. Davey Blackburn rapidly pivoted from a tragic widower into a celebrity blogger and podcaster.
He began leveraging his family’s raw tragedy to establish a media empire titled Nothing Is Wasted. Davey continuously appeared on major television networks to speak on his wife’s death, recounting his trauma and replaying the tragedy like a formulaic blueprint to drive viewership. Yet, before the lenses, viewers noticed he did not appear remotely sorrowful.
Amanda’s death brought Davey not just fame, but rapid affluence. On March 2, 2016, just months after the slaughter, Davey received his late wife’s life insurance payout. Almost instantly, he decided to sell the very house where Amanda was murdered and hurriedly purchased a luxurious new estate, boasting five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a massive swimming pool.
By July 2016, this man casually posted a photo checking in at his new mansion on his personal blog, adding the highly contented caption, “How happy I am to host a pool party at my new home.” The rapid speed with which the young pastor healed and transformed his financial status triggered a massive wave of public skepticism.
Many began raising a glaring question. Was his accidental failure to lock the door on that fateful morning truly an innocent oversight, or was it a calculated piece of strategic staging? Today, Davey Blackburn is happily remarried and living a life of pure luxury. He frequently preaches to others using the phrase, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim.
” Yet, looking at the massive financial empire built upon the blood of his late wife, Observers see secular earthly values manifesting in their most vivid form. The dark corners of the human heart behind that unlocked door will forever remain a shocking enigma to anyone who follows this case. Amanda Blackburn’s story is a heartbreaking testament to how the cruelty of a crime does not end when the gun smoke clears.
It lingers aggressively in how those left behind navigate the pain. A pregnant young mother lies eternally inside a cold grave. Three misguided youths pay with their entire youth behind prison bars. And a once revered pastor must live the remainder of his days under the hypercritical lens of public suspicion and judgment.
The case file is closed, but it leaves behind a costly cautionary lesson about our own domestic security. Sometimes, a single minor action, a moment of negligent complacency, like failing to lock the front door when leaving, can become the universal skeleton key that opens the gate for pure evil to walk right in, snatching away the lives of those we hold most dear.
In your perspective, does a rapid financial and romantic recovery after such an immense tragedy suggest a genuine manifestation of faith in moving forward, or does it hint at a chilling display of calculated opportunism? Thank you for dedicating your time to following this shocking case file. Each story we unlock is not merely to satisfy curiosity, but to serve as a stark reminder of the value of human life and the deep complexities of human nature.
