Eventually, the family moves into Cuthbird itself. And Lena builds a life the only way a black woman in 1940s Georgia realistically could. She cleans houses. She does laundry.

 She works as a maid inside the private homes of white families with almost no legal protection if anything went wrong. By the 1940s, Lena is a single mother raising three children on those wages. No safety net, no backup plan. In Jim Crow, Georgia, there was no system designed to help a black woman in her position.

 It was a rare move and it suggested that even the governor recognized something was deeply wrong. But in January 1945, the board completed their review. They denied clemency. The path to the electric chair was now open and nothing was standing in the way. August 14th, 1944. Randolph County Courthouse, Cuthbert, Georgia. Lena Baker’s trial begins.

 The judge presiding over her case is the Honorable Charles William Warl. The town calls him two gun whirl because he sits on the bench with two pistols placed in plain view in front of him.  He took her to the grist mill and locked her inside while he left for a church singing. When he returned, he refused to let her go. During the struggle over his pistol, the gun fired, and she walked directly to Ja Cox and reported everything herself.
