It was at the North Shore Ecology Station, located deep within this area, that the group of 27 people was logged into the winter ecological survey program for that week, including 11 researchers from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, seven Ojibwe hunters collaborating on wildlife data collection, three logistics staff handling transportation and equipment maintenance, four family members
visiting the camp, and two student guides participating in their first field survey. In the camp’s logbook, the final entry on November 18th recorded the work plan and preparations for the next morning’s data collection session with clear signs that activities were proceeding normally, and there were no warnings of any risks.
The group was noted as returning to the cabins in the late afternoon, splitting up to check the sled dogs, organize tools, and complete routine tasks before nightfall. Windows closed, but no interior frost build-up, indicating the cabins had not been heated for a considerable time. Some cabins had doors closed, others ajar, but none showed recent activity signs like stove smoke, lights, or sounds from inside. The research tents, about 40 m east of the main cabin, were also noted as unusually quiet.
Tents remained standing firmly, guy lines intact, snow evenly covering the roofs, indicating no one had touched them for many hours. On the snow surface between cabins, no drag marks, pole trails, or disturbances were recorded beyond wind patterns. Some lightweight items like maps had blown a few meters from their original positions, but timing could not be determined due to strong local winds.
During this surface observation phase, the team focused on documenting every detail with photos and video, how snow-covered doors, snow depth along walkways, wind direction, and positions of scattered items. Overall, the scene painted a picture of a camp abandoned in complete silence with no signs of major disturbance, no fresh entry-exit footprints, and no indicators that anyone remained within the camp boundaries when the search team arrived.
After completing surface scene documentation and confirming no signs of human presence in the camp area, the search team moved to inspecting the interiors of cabins and tents to determine the degree of interrupted activity and any clues about when the group left. The main cabin was entered first by gently pushing the already ajar door. Inside the space was dark and cold with no active stove and a damp smell from undiscarded food mixed with cold air.

No packing food, closing cabin doors, gathering personal items, or taking critical equipment. The scope of this search circle was set at 300 to 500 m from the main cabin extending in a circular pattern covering small trails, forest edges, frozen lake shores, and open terrain where snow could preserve deep footprints or clear drag marks. The
eight-person foot team was divided into four pairs to sweep each sector in a fan pattern. Each pair maintaining distance sufficient to observe the snow surface without stepping on potential tracks. They were instructed to move only along routes marked with reflective stakes to preserve the scene while pairs systematically scanned forest edges and clearings near the camp.
Simultaneously, two K9 search dogs trained for winter conditions were brought to the area. Scent articles for the K9 search were taken from remaining cabin items such as sweaters or scarves from some victims then the dogs started from the perimeter edge. Although strong northwesterly winds complicated scent retention, the K9s were guided through each sector in curving paths in hopes of detecting any lingering movement trails.
In the first two hours, the foot teams noted a few anomalies on the snow. Some faint depressions heading east but almost completely wind covered making it impossible to determine if human or animal. At the southern camp edge, a long compressed strip of snow could indicate a heavy object placed or dragged but lacked clear shape for classification.
Near the frozen lake edge, a hand-sized depression was found possibly from someone bracing while bending down but wind blurring prevented timing determination. The K9 search showed weak reactions moving through the western area where wind blew directly and could not hold scent long enough for a specific direction.
However, northeast of the camp, one K9 paused for quite a while in a low snow area seemingly catching a faint scent but strong wind dispersed it after a few minutes. The team marked this area with temporary stakes for inclusion in deeper follow-up searches. With each small discovery, the team logged and mapped them into the overall search grid then added suspicious locations to the priority list for deeper checks.
The northeast area where the K9 reacted, the southern area with the long compressed strip, and the lake edge with a hand-sized depression. Simultaneously, the team noted the entire western camp side was heavily wind scoured erasing all old tracks and rendering searches there nearly valueless. After nearly three hours of continuous sweeping, the first search circle concluded that no clear human footprints led directly away from the camp in the immediate range but three areas were considered likely to contain movement signs before wind
erasure. These locations were carefully marked, GPS coordinates recorded, and prioritized for re-examination using broader range search methods to determine if they related to the 27 people leaving the camp. After completing the first search circle and identifying three areas requiring special attention, the on-site command team decided to deploy a second search circle with an expanded scope to cover the entire area surrounding the camp within a radius of two to three kilometers, a distance considered the maximum that a large group could travel
in thick snow conditions over a short period if they had left the camp simultaneously. To support ground operations, the Civil Air Patrol was mobilized early on the morning of November 21st with a light aircraft equipped with a high-resolution optical camera and a specialized ground observation system.
The CAP flew in a spiral pattern outward from the camp maintaining the lowest possible altitude given the non-excessive wind conditions allowing the crew to directly observe any anomalies on the snow surface, particularly elongated tracks or clusters of faint marks that could be footprints erased by wind. The camera was adjusted to capture images across different brightness ranges to detect any changes on the highly reflective snow surface under cold clear sky conditions.
On the ground, the expanded search team divided the area into three primary directions, northeast where the K9 had previously reacted, south where a questionable long compressed snow trail had appeared, and southwest leading to the large lake area with interspersed forest ravines. The northeast direction was prioritized first.
A two-person team approached this area using snowshoes to avoid sinking deeply into the snow. They systematically scanned segments of trees observing broken branches, compressed snow surfaces, or any signs indicating the passage of heavy objects or multiple people. However, the wind from the previous night had erased most traces to the point where original shapes were no longer recognizable.
Only one small area, approximately 4 square meters, where the snow showed uneven compression possibly from multiple footsteps, was marked for inclusion in the report. In the south direction, the second team advanced into the area where the long compressed snow trail had been discovered during the first search circle.
Upon closer examination, they noted slight lateral ridges on the snow surface, signs that could indicate a flat or heavy object being dragged through before strong winds arrived. Although the drag mark was not deep enough to identify the type of object, its extended length suggested significant activity had occurred there. The search team marked the area with colored stakes and recorded precise GPS coordinates to add to the overall map.
The southwest direction leading to the frozen lake shore was assigned to the third team. They moved along the lake shore paying close attention to points where the snow surface on the ice showed slight cracks or darker coloring possibly due to weight impact. The small forest ravines around the lake were also thoroughly swept.
These were areas where wind blew unevenly sometimes preserving compressed snow traces for a few hours before complete erasure. In one ravine approximately 30 m long, the team found an unusually piled snow area in a sheltered corner where wind had limited access suggesting some movement had occurred there before the bad weather swept through.
While the ground teams were scanning, the CAP crew reported only one noteworthy observation, a faint near semi-circular line on the snow surface about 1.8 km east of the camp possibly the mark of a light motorized vehicle or a sled pulled with strong force. Since the camera resolution did not allow definitive confirmation, the command team marked this location for inclusion in the level two inspection list.
After 4 hours of deploying the expanded search circle, the team compiled data from the three directions and concluded that there were no clear signs indicating organized movement by a large group within the close radius. But there were some scattered clues, compressed trails, rippled snow, areas of unevenly compressed snow that could indicate the temporary presence of multiple individuals or heavy objects at various points before wind erased most traces.
From these recordings, the team formed a preliminary map of key points in the expanded area and identified additional potential locations to include in the next level search scope to clarify the possibility that the group of 27 people had left the camp in any direction before completely disappearing.
When the data from the expanded search circle was compiled and priority areas marked on the temporary map, the on-site command team shifted focus to collecting the scattered items discovered during movement in both search circles. Although the number of items was not large, accurately recording the position of each was necessary to determine whether they related to the movement direction of the group of 27 people or were merely random debris scattered by wind and environmental conditions.
The team returned to each marked point using GPS to fix coordinates and taking wide-angle and close-up photos of each item on the snow. In the northeast area, where the K9 had previously shown a weak reaction during the first search circle, the team found a dark blue wool hat almost completely covered by snow located about 420 m from the camp.
The hat was lying on its side with no signs of being dragged or stepped on. Approximately 15 m nearby, a thin synthetic wool neck scarf was tangled around the base of a low bush appearing to have been blown from a distance to this position. Both items were marked with reflective stakes and their precise locations recorded in the field log.
In the south direction, right in the area where the long compressed snow trail appeared during the second search circle, the team discovered a small fabric pouch used for holding a compass and forest map. The pouch was open but empty inside. However, on the side, it still had a label positioned with the name of one member of the research group.
Although the search team was not permitted to draw conclusions and only recorded this detail in the file. About 60 m southeast from there, a piece of note paper was found stuck to a thin ice layer on the snow surface. The handwriting was blurred and the content unreadable, but it was still collected according to evidence presentation procedures.
In the southwest direction, along the frozen lake shore, the team found a pair of soft fabric gloves, one lying face down and the other about 2 m away, apparently blown apart by wind. There were no traces indicating they were dropped during hurried movement nor any footprints or drag marks around the discovery location.
In the ravine, where the second search circle had noted unusual snow compression, the team discovered a small plastic water bottle half buried under the snow. The bottle was not deformed with no scratches or cracks suggesting it may have fallen onto the snow surface when the snow was still soft before the weather became harsher.
All collected items were placed in separate bags, numbered, and listed with detailed GPS coordinates. A digital map of item distribution was created on the command team’s map with each point marked by different symbols to distinguish item type and discovery area. When these items were preliminarily cross-referenced with the personal property list provided by the camp management unit, a few were noted as potentially belonging to members of the group of 27 people.
However, the search team did not make affirmations and only noted the degree of match for the next analysis step. Based on the distribution map, it was clear that the majority of items were in two directions, northeast and south, at distances from 300 to 600 m from the main cabin. No items were found in the west or northwest directions consistent with the prior assessment that strong winds had erased all traces in that area or simply that there was no significant movement in that direction.
Upon completing the item collection process, the team had established a visual diagram of the positions of scattered items and created an initial foundation to determine whether these items related to the missing group’s movement path or were merely displaced by strong wind conditions in the preceding days.
When the collection of scattered items was complete and the distribution diagram established, the search team moved to inspecting the sled dog kennel area on the western edge of the camp, which they had intentionally avoided approaching earlier to prevent disturbance before the entire surrounding area was fully documented.
Upon approaching, the team quickly discovered that all 14 sled dogs used as the primary winter transport method were lying motionless in an uneven semicircle around the low wooden fence. The dogs were tethered with specialized ropes about half a meter long, each attached to an individual iron stake driven deep into the snow. The team recorded the exact count, 14 dogs, neither missing nor extra compared to the camp’s list.
Their condition showed that none had escaped their positions, the tether ropes were not chewed through or loosened, but remained in their original evenly knotted structure. This suggested that the person who tied them had knowledge of sled dog tethering techniques and that each dog was carefully secured as in preparation for movement or awaiting orders rather than temporary or chaotic tying in an emergency.
Upon close inspection, the team found slight snow compression at some points around the area, but nearly the entire snow surface was flat due to time and wind covering it with new snow making it impossible to identify any significant footprints or drag marks in the vicinity. Some dogs were lying on their sides, others stretched out with no signs of struggle or heavily disturbed snow indicating they did not resist during tying or in the subsequent waiting period.
To estimate time of death, the team used two main factors, body rigidity and degree of partial freezing. In conditions with temperatures ranging from 10° C to a 18° C in the preceding days, soft tissue freezing occurred quickly, but full body rigidity combined with slight sinking of the carcasses into the underlying snow allowed an estimate that the dogs had been dead for approximately 24 to 48 hours.
However, some dogs had fur surfaces still retaining a thin layer of crystallized ice forming hard snow flowers suggesting they may have died at the time of the deepest temperature drop in that period. There were no signs of trauma, blood, or bite marks on the neck and body confirming that death was not due to wild animal attack and highly likely due to cold and starvation after being tethered without access to food and water.
The water bowls in the kennel area were completely frozen with no signs of recent use. Upon careful observation of the tethers, the team noted evenly tied knots in the double loop half hitch style, a common knot in sled dog training to keep dogs fixed while preparing to run. This led the team to clearly note that the person performing this action not only had skill but operated in a calm and intentional state.
Additionally, the uneven semicircle positioning of the tethered dogs indicated the tying process occurred sequentially rather than simultaneously. Snow under some dog bodies was slightly depressed proving they had remained motionless for a long time until death. The search team documented the entire condition with photos, video, and detailed reports in the field file.
Within the scope of this inspection, the discovery of 14 dogs dead in a fixed tethered state reinforced the initial assessment that the camp had been abandoned in an unusual manner and could be related to the event occurring simultaneously with the disappearance of the entire group of 27 people. However, the team only recorded data and made no conclusions beyond completing the file describing the sled dogs status and estimated time of death within the allowable range of weather conditions at that time.
When the documentation of the sled dogs condition was complete and all data from the search circles was sent to the temporary command center, the search team moved to the synthesis phase to assess whether the situation at North Shore Ecology Station fit a typical lost in the wilderness case. First, the team categorized the data into four main groups, on-site surface observations, collected scattered items, close radius search results, and expanded circle results with civil air patrol support.
The on-site surface observation group indicated that all 27 people left no new footprints around the camp with the intact snow layer in the immediate cabin vicinity proving no one departed after the most recent snowfall. All cabins were abandoned mid-activity, half-eaten hot food, unmade beds, equipment left in use, no signs of packing or preparing for long-distance travel.
The research tent had unfinished notes indicating the user left in a sudden interruption. All of this did not match any scenario of voluntary camp departure. The scattered items group showed that most dropped objects were in two directions, northeast and south, but all at relatively close positions from the camp in the 300-600 m range and did not form a clear movement line.
The wool hat, neck scarf, compass pouch, note paper, and gloves appeared scattered as if blown away or fallen from equipment in strong wind conditions rather than forming a continuous trail as when a group leaves the camp on a specific route. Particularly, the absence of any signs of the group in the west and northwest directions, the directions the team considered could lead to the safest escape route out of the forest, was a clear anomaly.
From the close radius search, the lack of deep footprints, drag marks, skid traces, or any indicators of a large group moving through the first 500 m around the camp led the command team to rule out the possibility that all 27 people walked away from the camp at the same time. With thick snow and soft underlying snow at that time, movement by such a large group would certainly leave clear traces regardless of strong wind erasing shallow surface marks.
The canine could not hold a scent direction, but this was explained by wind conditions rather than the missing group having left the camp. The expanded search circle showed only very weak signs such as compressed snow trails or wind swirled snow areas preserving older surfaces in some ravines, but no consistent movement line or any chain of marks attributable to multiple people.
The cape also only reported one questionable faint strip 1.8 km from the camp, but clarity was insufficient to consider it a human path. It could be a strong wind pattern on the snow or the mark of a light object blown sliding. When piecing the data together, the command team identified the largest anomaly, all sled dogs.
The camp’s indispensable winter transport were fixed tethered with specialized ropes and died in the state unable to move or self-release. This made the possibility of the group actively leaving the camp even more illogical. No camp member would have reason to abandon the entire dog team, especially in low temperatures when they were the only means to ensure safe long-distance travel.
Based on these observations, the command team initially concluded that the incident did not bear the characteristics of a lost in the wilderness case, nor was it a situation where the entire group left according to plan and lost signal. No signs of returning to cabins, no preparation signs, no taking gear, no departure route, and sled dogs disabled all indicated an abnormality exceeding the scope of a wilderness activity incident.
When the field report was compiled and forwarded to the sheriff’s office, the authorities officially confirmed that the emergency search phase was no longer appropriate to continue as a typical SAR mission. The sheriff declared the end of the expanded search phase as the primary task and transferred the entire file to the initial investigation mode for a disappearance with signs of abnormality.
This included sealing the entire North Shore Ecology Station as a scene requiring strict preservation, requesting support from specialized investigation units, and preparing procedures for collecting and analyzing evidence according to standards for a case potentially criminal in nature. Immediately after the Cook County Sheriff decided to transfer the entire case at North Shore Ecology Station to the initial investigation phase, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s forensic team was deployed to the scene in the early
morning of November 21st to seal off the area and establish a proper forensic crime scene. The first task was to divide the camp area into clearly defined sectors to facilitate systematic evidence collection and trace documentation. The entire camp was divided into four main sectors, the living cabin area, the research tent area, the central kitchen area, and the sled dog kennel area.
Each sector was marked with different colored tape and assigned to an independent forensic team to avoid data overlap. In front of the main cabin, the forensic team established a coordinate origin point so that all measurements, sketches, and photographs could be referenced to the same system. The snow surface around the cabin was photographed from above using a drone before any further disturbance from the investigation team.
After completing the overall mapping, evidence collection was initiated. In the living cabin sector, the team collected snow samples in small grid sections to look for signs of compression or the presence of foreign material buried by wind. Snow blocks were cut using specialized tools and sealed for testing to detect fibers, skin cells, or layering indications suggesting prior movement.
Inside the cabin, the team collected ash from the stove, remaining food samples, dust from table surfaces, fabric fibers caught on chairs and doors. At the auxiliary cabin, they gathered samples from blankets, pillows, and items fallen on the floor to determine if they carried DNA traces, foreign fibers, or material from outside the cabin environment.
In the research tent sector, all equipment, documents, pens, and tools were photographed in their current positions before collection. In particular, the team sampled soil directly under the workbench because the moisture and soil texture there could retain footwear impressions if someone had stood there shortly before the tent was abandoned.
Additionally, small streaks on the tabletop and tent fabric were sampled to check for contact with objects not belonging to the research group. All coordinate data, snow cross-sections, and photo- graphs were entered into the scene diagram for subsequent movement route analysis. After completing analysis of vehicle traces around the camp and documenting snow ruts likely created in the same time frame as the disappearance of the 27 people, the investigation team turned to detailed examination of the tether ropes and the condition of all 14 sled dogs to assess whether the act of tying them could provide further information about the person who did it and the timing. Each tether rope was removed

More importantly, analysis of the consistent double loop half hitch application across all 14 tethers showed this action could not have been performed by someone unfamiliar with the technique.

the unusual nature of the incident at North Shore Ecology Station on the night of November 18th, 2003. Upon completing the analysis of the restraining ropes and the condition of the sled dog pack, the investigation team proceeded to conduct a detailed assessment of the cabins to determine the extent of disruption in daily activities and the possibility of external intrusion.
The main cabin was examined first as it was the hub of the research group’s activities and also contained important records of their daily work. From the moment they entered the cabin, the forensics team noted several anomalies related to the degree of disturbance of objects markedly different from the natural clutter typically seen in a busy living environment.
On the work table, several document folders have been shifted away from their dust outlined positions indicating they had been picked up by someone and then placed back incorrectly. The group responsible for the actions at North Shore Ecology Station consisted of six to seven individuals organized, task divided, and possessing relatively high skills in snowy and icy environments.
This conclusion marked a critical step in determining that the disappearance of 27 people could not be a random accident, but was the result of an operation conducted by a group with considerable preparation. After establishing that the likely number of perpetrators ranged from six to seven based on analysis of tracks, snow compression points, and trace distribution around the camp, the investigation team moved to a necessary step to rule out the possibility that the group of 27 had fallen into the lake or suffered a collective accident on the
ice. A hypothesis with little supporting evidence, but one that still required thorough verification per procedure. The lake, located on the southwest edge of the camp, spanned nearly 300 m with depths varying from 4 to 12 m depending on the area. Although the surface was frozen, early season ice is often weak in spots, especially near strong subsurface currents.
To survey the lake under frozen conditions, the investigation team used a 2003 model portable sonar, standard equipment at the time for rescue units, consisting of a medium frequency transducer mounted on a hand-towed float capable of producing acceptable bottom images through dark winter water. This group, according to records from 2001 onward, frequently moved between three temporary cabins scattered deep in the forest, a large cabin south of Granite Lake, a small cabin near the edge of the Little Ollie Trail, and a wooden shelter near Gneiss Lake, where they had previously set animal traps. The identities of each member had also been noted in scattered ranger reports. In addition, the Gunflint Seven had been reported for illegal logging on public land, illegal moose hunting, and threatening two rangers in February 2002 after a license check. On at least three occasions, they were recorded using modified snowcats to transport timber out of restricted areas. A detail that matched the snowcat tracks found south of the research camp.
A potential motive also began to emerge as the investigation team reviewed the activities of the North Shore Ecology Station in October and November 2003. A research team at the camp had surveyed a forest area about 3 km from the Gunflint Seven’s cabin and recorded signs of recent illegal logging.

Thus, it is possible that the group became aware that their activities were being monitored and viewed the research camp as a direct threat to their continued illegal operation.
When comparing the locations of the Gunflint Seven’s cabins with the data on vehicle tracks and compacted snow areas, the investigation team noted significant overlaps. The southwest snowmobile tracks from the camp led directly along an unofficial route known as the shortest path to the Granite cabin. According to statements from many local hunters, this area was often used by the Gunflint Seven as a timber transfer station.
The snowcat tracks appearing to the south also led to a route connecting to the Little Ollie area, where the group had been caught transporting equipment by snowcat more than once. Furthermore, when reviewing prior behavior records, the investigation team noted that the Gunflint Seven had used stealthy approaches to other people’s forest cabins to take tools or food during extended hunting trips.
On those occasions, they always entered cabins by opening slightly ajar doors or finding unlocked entry points, avoiding structural damage to leave no unexplained traces. This characteristic perfectly matched the research camp’s cabin, no forced entry, selectively disturbed items, and signs of searching for documents rather than valuables.
Based on all this data, the investigation team proceeded to compile preliminary profiles for each Gunflint Seven member, including identity, characteristics of vehicles they owned, their presence in the area in November 2003, the cabins they frequented, and prior violation records. The profile was completed as a set of linking factors, ability to access the camp, skills matching the scene, vehicles matching the snow tracks, and a motive that could lead to intervention.
Although there was no direct evidence, the Gunflint Seven became the first potential suspect group to fully meet the three key elements, capability to carry it out, opportunity for access, and motive to interfere with the North Shore Ecology Station’s activities at the exact time of the disappearance. Although the Gunflint Seven emerged as the clearest potential suspects with numerous scene matches, the investigation entering early 2004 began to hit limits that the team could not overcome.
No bodies, no direct biological traces proving a crime, and no witnesses who saw criminal acts. This meant that the entire evidence collection process, no matter how detailed and systematic, remained at the level of well-founded hypothesis and could not advance to charges. In the weeks after completing the preliminary suspect profiles, the investigation team conducted a full research of the entire area around the camp within a 15-km radius, expanding the search far beyond the standard for a typical missing person’s case. They checked every trail,
every dense forest section, every soft ground or snow patch that might retain traces longer than the camp area, but found no signs of large-scale movement, no new personal items, and no fabric fragments, bloodstains, or objects that could clearly link to the missing group. The team also interviewed dozens of local hunters, residents scattered along the Gunflint Trail, and forest management staff.
Notably, no one reported seeing any large group moving through the forest at that time, nor any unusual motorized vehicle activity beyond the usual snowmobiles of winter hunters. Even data from the Civil Air Patrol, which is often capable of detecting unusual movement signs on snow, provided no new information. Some witnesses gave accounts of hearing snowmobile engines around the time frame of the disappearance, but such sounds were too common during hunting season to identify criminal action.
Meanwhile, searches of the Granite cabin, Little Ollie cabin, and the shelter near Gneiss Lake belonging to the Gunflint Seven yielded no specific results. These sites had all been used multiple times, changed continuously with the seasons, and contained no traces directly matching the evidence collected at the research camp.
When the forensics team wanted to compare sled dog tie ropes with samples that might be found at the suspect cabins, they discovered that the cabins had been cleared of ropes and tools before the team arrived. Possibly due to new winter activity or routine equipment changes, no traces remained distinctive enough for accurate comparison.
All these points prevented the case against the Gunflint Seven from becoming legal evidence. The absence of bodies was the biggest obstacle. Any charge of serious crime requires proof that victims were killed or harmed. The disappearance of 27 people without any biological traces, no blood, no destroyed objects, no signs of struggle, caused the investigation to deadlock because the law cannot rely on speculation.
The consistency of interruption signs, sled dog ties, snowmobile, and snowcat tracks only helped establish that someone entered the camp, but did not prove that the 27 people were murdered or forcibly moved. Even when the team tried to expand the scope and verify whether the missing group could have been transported by motorized vehicles, they found no compacted snow routes leading to other cabins clear enough to reconstruct a path.
Variable weather and constant new snow cover had erased all chances of determining travel routes. By late March 2004, the investigation lasting over 4 months still yielded no legal evidence, and expanded search efforts only clarified one thing. It was impossible to prove any specific criminal act had occurred. Spring arrival melted the snow, but instead of revealing new clues, it only left slippery traceless ground, ending any hope of finding remaining physical evidence.
Meanwhile, files at the BCA office grew thicker with reports analyzing snow, soil, ice, fabric fibers, ash, but no forensic conclusion was strong enough to charge a specific group. The Cook County Sheriff, after multiple discussions with the District Prosecutor’s Office and BCA, had to make the most difficult decision, temporarily close the case file, and move the entire dossier to Minnesota’s cold case list.
The official announcement was issued in April 2004, stating that the investigation remained technically open, but no longer active due to lack of evidence. The incident of 27 people disappearing at North Shore Ecology Station was classified as an unexplained disappearance, and from that point, the official investigation entered a dormant state, awaiting any clue that might emerge in the future.
When the file was transferred to cold case status in April 2004, and all active investigation activities were suspended, the evidence collected in the initial phase was sealed and stored in the BCA warehouse near Duluth. It was not until 2010, when the state of Minnesota launched a program to review backlog cases involving mass disappearances, that the North Shore Ecology Station case was brought back to the desks of forensic experts to assess whether any evidence remained unprocessed or could be exploited with
new technology. The review process began by listing all seized evidence from the scene, including 14 sled dog tie ropes, over 60 snow and soil samples corded from various zones, ash from three stoves, fabric fragments collected in cabins and research tents, 27 scattered personal items such as wool hats, scarves, cloth bags, and gloves, along with the cabin document set including the torn page logbook, smudged note papers, and disturbed topographic maps.
In addition, there were many soil and microfiber samples taken from cabin doors, hinges, and table edges, but in 2003, 2004 analysis capabilities were limited by available technology, leading to their classification as insufficient for testing. Upon re-review, the cold case team identified several oversights in the initial investigation that had not received proper attention.
First, the number of snow and soil samples collected from the cabin and dog kennel areas was greater than the amount analyzed in 2003. Most were simply stored without undergoing microfiber analysis for foreign matter such as metal particles, machine oil, paint dust, or synthetic fibers from strangers’ clothing.
This stemmed from the initial investigation focusing more on searching for victims than detailing the intrusion pattern. Second, the sled dog tie ropes were only analyzed morphologically, not style, tightness, and uniformity, but not chemically tested for traces of sweat, hand oil, or microfibers from the handlers’ gloves.
Touch DNA technology, though still developing in the early 2000s, had advanced enough by 2010 to exploit such microfiber samples. Third, the torn page logbook had never been analyzed for residual traces along the spine. Glue, paper fiber fragments, and fine paper dust could contain signs indicating the tearing method, speed, or object used to pull pages, thereby determining whether pages were torn bare-handed or with gloves.
Another oversight was that the half-open maps had not been tested for fingerprints or adhering fibers. In 2003, fingerprints on rough paper were often difficult to recover, but by 2010 many special illumination methods could detect contact patterns previously invisible to the naked eye. The review team also noted that scattered personal items, hats, scarves, cloth bags, were only used as location data without deep analysis of fiber origin, stains, or pull marks.
Many of these samples remained in good condition due to continuous cold storage suitable for spectroscopy and particle analysis. When evaluating all evidence by 2010 standards, the cold case team reclassified them into four priority groups. The high priority group included sled dog tie ropes, cabin fabric fibers, the torn page logbook, and soil samples from research tent table legs, evidence with the highest likelihood of containing intruder contact traces.
The medium priority group included scattered personal items, stove ash, and snow samples potentially containing oil or foreign matter. The low priority group included evidence no longer valuable due to structural changes during storage such as melted snow samples, fragmented ice, or degraded fabric fibers. The final group was reference evidence such as camp ropes, victim blanket fibers, and cabin area soil used for comparative analysis.
During this reclassification, the cold case team acknowledged that the initial investigation, though thorough by 2003 standards, had missed several high-value pieces of evidence in the context of newer technology. No single item was immediately decisive, but the backlog of many untested samples created an opportunity for reanalysis using modern methods.
This opened the possibility that minor traces, once deemed insignificant, could provide critical information about who accessed the camp on the night of the incident, thereby advancing the case a step further after nearly a decade of stagnation. Once the review of backlog evidence was complete and key samples were re-prioritized, the BCA cold case team began implementing a new series of forensic tests from 2010-2014 leveraging significant advances in microfiber analysis, soil spectroscopy, and touch trace techniques, technologies that either did not exist
or lack sufficient accuracy at the time of the 2003 incident. The initial focus was on the high priority evidence group, fabric fibers collected in the cabin, fibers caught on door hinge edges, and microfibers from the inner side of sled dog tie ropes. These fiber samples were subjected to FTIR system analysis allowing precise identification of each fiber’s polymer composition.
Results showed that some fabric fibers adhering to the cabin hinge did not belong to any fabric or clothing listed in the 27 missing persons’ apparel inventory. Instead, they matched synthetic fabric commonly used in cold-resistant work jackets, the type often sold in local forest equipment stores and frequently used by hunters and illegal loggers.
Some microfibers recovered from the tie ropes even had a dual polyester-nylon structure characteristic of inexpensive ski gloves used by people working outdoors in prolonged freezing conditions. This aligned with the assessment that the person tying the dogs did not use bare hands, but wore specialized gloves. Further analysis using scanning electron microscopy revealed low-content metal microparticles on the fibers, primarily iron and manganese, levels characteristic of areas with unlicensed sawing activity south of the Gunflint
Trail. Next, the forensics team conducted soil matching tests using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy to analyze the chemical composition of soil samples from the cabin, research tents, and sled dog area. Some soil samples collected at the main cabin door edge had markedly different mineral composition from the natural soil around the camp.
Specifically, they contained higher levels of hematite and trace elements like zircon and titanium, components uncommon in the soil layer around North Shore Ecology Station, but matching soil samples taken from the forest near the Granite Cabin, one of the three known frequent locations of the Gunflint Seven. This data was reinforced when LEVIS analysis of soil adhering to the edge of a sled dog tie rope showed nearly identical mineral structure to samples taken near routes previously recorded for snowcat movement. Additionally, when comparing
soil from the southern compacted snow track with soil from behind the Little Holly Cabin, similarity reached a high level with only 3-5% error in mineral composition within statistical limits to conclude the two areas shared the same soil origin. This created a direct connection between traces at the research camp and the suspect group’s activity areas.
Concurrent with soil and fiber analysis, the forensics team began relabeling all evidence based on potential linkage strength to suspect areas. Evidence items received new identification codes and were divided into three groups: high linkage, indirect linkage, and no connection. Based on the new analyses, many items previously deemed no value in 2003 were upgraded to matching or probable groups.
For example, a light black fabric fiber sample collected from a research tent table leg, previously too generic for testing, when analyzed by FTIR showed a match to the fabric in waterproof jackets that two Gunflint Seven members were caught wearing during a 2002 ranger incident. Similarly, some dust particles collected on cabin surfaces, initially considered natural dust, when reanalyzed by Raman spectroscopy, revealed traces of industrial epoxy resin used to repair old conveyor belts in an illegal sawmill the suspect group had once operated in
the forest. Once all evidence was labeled under the new system, the forensics team created a linkage diagram showing which evidence had potential direct ties to the Gunflint Seven’s activity areas, which could suggest stranger presence in the cabin on the night of November 18, and which was completely unrelated.
Results showed a significant chain of connections. At least 10 of the items collected at the camp had composition or characteristics matching material recorded at the suspect group’s cabin areas. Although not yet sufficient for a final conclusion, the appearance of matching soil samples, foreign fabric fibers, and characteristic microtraces shifted the case from no evidence to indirect linkage traces, paving the way for a new step forward in the prolonged cold case reanalysis process.
When the fiber analysis and soil matching created a clear chain of links between the physical evidence at the North Shore Ecology Station camp and the operational areas of the Gunflint Seven group, the cold case team proceeded to the next step. Building a digital model of all possible movements on the night of November 18th, 2003 to determine the direction of travel taken by the perpetrator group after leaving the camp.
This was a step that technology in the early 2000s could not achieve, but by 2012-2014 with detailed lidar data from Superior National Forest and high-resolution digital mapping systems from the USGS, the investigation team was able to reconstruct the entire terrain in detail down to individual snow drifts, every slope with fallen trees, and every small topographic groove.
First, they imported all the lidar data into 3D terrain simulation software, recreating the condition of the North Shore area as it existed in the winter of 2003 while removing subsequent forest changes such as newly grown trees, trees felled by the 2007 storm, or trails expanded in later years. This 3D model allowed the investigation team to review the natural routes most likely usable by snowmobiles and snow cats based on slope, tree density, and gaps between tree trunks.
Next, they input wind snow data from NOAA recorded between November 17th and 2003 with parameters including northwest winds of 22-26 mph, snowfall density of 2-3 cm on the 19th, and temperatures dropping sharply from -6° C to -14° C. The simulation software enabled precise determination of the degree of snow cover over tracks, the timing when grooves might be erased or deformed, and the areas where snow was most likely to preserve compression marks the longest.
When running the model in reverse, the experts recreated hour-by-hour the changes to the snow surface from 6:00 p.m. on November 18th to 6:00 a.m. on November 19th, noting the regions that still retained compression marks in the lower layers despite new snowfall. These regions were circled as probable routes of the perpetrator group.
From there, the team combined the wind snow model with the snowmobile and snow cat track data collected during the initial investigation. The snowmobile track in the southwest direction best matched a natural route running along the forest edge where slopes were low and trees sparse, allowing the vehicle to avoid thick ice mounds.
The simulation model showed this route was the easiest to travel for a heavily loaded snowmobile, consistent with field data showing deeper than normal tracks. For the snow cat in the southern direction, the model identified only two feasible routes that could operate this vehicle without getting stuck. One route running through a flat strip leading near Gunflint Lake, and another following a low slope toward Little Ollie Cabin.
When cross-referencing the soil adhering to the sled dog tire ropes and soil stuck in the snow compression grooves with the previous soil matching analysis, the path toward Little Ollie showed higher matching, especially considering the overlapping trace elements. The model then ran another version simulating group movement on foot based on scattered snow compression data around the camp.
When inputting the compression points into the model and having the software calculate the most probable directions of movement based on 2003 terrain conditions, the results showed the group moving in two separate arcs, one arc toward the southwest and a larger arc downward to the south. This strongly reinforced the hypothesis that group split into two teams.
One team using a snowmobile for quick access to the southwest forest, the remaining team using a snow cat to transport people or heavy items southward. When running the final simulation, a forward model, the software predicted the optimal travel directions for both vehicles if they aimed to return to Granite Cabin or Little Ollie Cabin based on terrain and snow cover speed.
The results showed the snowmobile route taken matched a shortcut leading directly to Granite Cabin while the snow cat route headed straight to the forest road connecting to Little Ollie Cabin. This alignment between the terrain model, wind snow model, soil matching, and actual track evidence created the highest probability conclusion since the case was recorded.
The perpetrator group on the night of November 18th moved in two directions, but both returned to the operational area of the Gunflint 7. No travel direction led to a legal residential point, no route headed toward a major highway, and no traces matched the behavior of lost individuals or those seeking help.
Everything the model reconstructed pointed to the same conclusion. An organized group approached the camp, acted quickly, departed using two vehicles, and withdrew to the deep forest where the Gunflint 7 had cabins and long-term operations. When the digital model of the movement directions on the night of November 18th, 2003 had created a tight chain of links between the North Shore camp and the Gunflint 7 operational area.
The case remained a cold case because no bodies had been found. Everything truly changed only in the spring of 2015 when ice melted earlier than usual along the narrow valley south of Gunflint Lake. On May 3rd, a crew from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources tasked with inspecting forest drainage pipes in an area about 2 km from Little Ollie Cabin had one member spot a patch of white bone exposed on the mud from recently melted ice.
At first, they thought it was deer bone, but upon closer inspection, the worker realized the bone structure did not resemble any native animal. It was straight, long, and the bone end had clear anatomical features of human bone. Immediately, the crew halted all activity and reported to the area ranger.
Within 45 minutes, a ranger arrived at the scene, confirmed it was human bone, and immediately requested a temporary lockdown of the area. The BCA was notified that same afternoon. And by the next morning, a fully equipped forensic team was on site to survey the discovery area. During preliminary excavation, the forensic team uncovered four additional scattered bone fragments at depths of only about 3 to 8 cm below the ice-soaked soil.
There was no complete skeleton, but the fragments were large enough for identification analysis. Among them was a portion of a lower jaw with two teeth still attached, a femur segment broken into three parts, and a rib section with edges worn by drifting ice. Notably, the discovery site laid directly on the route that the previous digital model predicted as the probable snow cat departure path from the camp on the night of the incident.
The location had a gentle slope, soft ground when ice melted, and sat between two clusters of fir trees, making it an ideal spot to hide bodies in thick snow conditions without leaving subsequent signs. All bones were collected, cleaned, and sent to the BCA DNA lab in St. Paul. Due to decomposition lasting over 10 years and continuous freeze-thaw conditions, DNA extraction was challenging, but in June 2015, after nearly 3 weeks of analysis using modern STR techniques, confirmed a strong match.
The DNA sample matched the profile of Marla Hennings, one of the 27 people missing from the North Shore Ecology Station in 2003. Marla’s reference DNA profile came from a hairbrush provided by her family when the incident was fresh, and the match achieved high reliability. This was the first body of any victim from the group of 27 found after more than a decade of the case being stalled.
As soon as the results were confirmed, the BCA immediately sent a request to reopen the North Shore case file with active investigation status. The appearance of the body completely changed the legal nature of the case from unexplained disappearance to suspected criminal case with deceased victim. The Cook County Prosecutor’s Office was notified the same day, and expanded excavation of the discovery area was approved to search for remaining body parts or other bodies in the vicinity.
This event marked the turning point that nearly the entire investigation force had awaited for over 11 years from a case with no bodies and no direct evidence. They now had an identified victim, a legal and practical anchor to revisit the entire file, reassess investigation directions, and re-examine previously built links. Finding the first body also reinforced the value of the digital model reconstructing the incident night movement as the discovery location lay in the suspect travel route area that the model predicted with the highest
probability. This was the first time in many years that real field data verified an investigative model. Finding the body left no doubt that the 27 people did not disappear due to accident or getting lost. At least one had died and been dumped in snowy conditions. The North Shore Ecology Station file, seemingly destined to remain frozen forever, was officially restarted with full forensic and investigative forces returning to the pursuit of the truth.
Immediately after Marla Hennings’ identity was confirmed via STR analysis, the BCA launched a large-scale search around the bone discovery area, expanding the survey radius from 300 m to over 1.2 km in all three directions, south, southeast, and southwest, corresponding to the travel routes identified by the digital model in the incident night reconstruction phase to maximize detection of subsurface anomalies in mixed forest terrain, the forensic team used a 2014 ground penetrating radar system with a 400 MHz antenna capable of scanning down to 3 m
and distinguishing disturbed soil layers from burial versus natural layers. After 3 days of continuous grid pattern scanning, the GPR detected a total of seven anomalies, abnormal response areas scattered along the southeast edge of Nice Lake. These anomalies ranged in size from 1.5 x 2 m to 3 x 2 4 m with response depths varying from 40 to 110 cm and response shapes often appearing as unevenly compacted soil patches indicating a high likelihood of hand-dug graves later covered with snow and soil.
Some anomalies even showed slight curved reflection bands in the lower layer characteristic of large organic objects clustered together. When GPR was rerun from multiple angles for confirmation, at least four anomalies gave strong, consistent, and prolonged responses sufficient to request excavation under forensic protocol.
On May 21st, 2015, the BCA approved a large-scale excavation plan. The forensic team established a 400 m radius zone around anomaly number three, the largest response area, set up shelter tents, laid preservation tarps, and began digging the topsoil layer with hand tools to avoid disturbing lower layers.
At about 55 cm depth, a technician shovel hit an object with different texture, softer than surrounding soil, and when cleaned with a forensic brush, a human bone section appeared lying in relatively intact anatomical position. When expanding 70 cm horizontally, the team discovered ribs and spine of a second person lying parallel and about 40 cm from the first body.
This was clear evidence of a mass grave. Over the next 3 days, the forensic team excavated the four largest anomalies and discovered a total of 22 bodies at seven scattered burial sites. Each grave contained two to five bodies placed close together but without any specific order. Many bodies lay on their sides, some face down, and some shifted due to soil compression and snow weight over the years.
The team had to separate each body using careful layer-by-layer methods. Each soil layer was scraped with thin blades, collected in sealed bags, and coded for further analysis. When encountering overlapping bones, the forensic team used wooden probes to determine individual body boundaries before cutting layers. All bodies were heavily decomposed leaving only skeletons.
However, joint structures remained sufficient to determine original postures. Initial observations showed most bodies in states without strong resistance. Many arms placed near the torso or slightly curled in front of the chest with no signs of bone fractures from direct assault force. This allowed the investigation team to preliminarily conclude that victims may have been unconscious or incapacitated before burial, though this needed further verification in later forensic analysis.
To isolate each body by exact position and posture, the forensic team created a 1:20 scale grid map placed directly on the ground dividing the excavation area into small squares. Each body was numbered by discovery order while also recording three-dimensional positions for later reconstruction modeling. In the second grave, three bodies were found staggered in a fan shape, heads pointing toward the same southwest direction.
The fourth body lay near the grave edge with leg bones twisted diagonally due to soil slippage from melt seasons. The third grave contained four bodies covered under thick soil mixed with ash fragments indicating the area may have been partially burned before burial but not to incinerate bodies, possibly to destroy surface traces.
The largest grave, nearly 4 m long, contained a total of five bodies. Their postures lay crowded together showing they were placed at the same time or very close in time. Many bodies showed anatomically misplaced bones such as arm bones pressed under another body indicating the diggers spent little time arranging. The remaining bodies lay in four smaller graves, each with two to three people.
Notably, all grave locations formed a wide arc extending 600 m almost perfectly matching the snowcat route predicted by the digital model. This indicated the bodies were very likely transported by motorized vehicle from the camp to this area before mass burial. When all 22 bodies were isolated, collected, and placed in individual body bags, each bag was coded by position and order in the grave for identification purposes.
Discovering such a large number of bodies in a concentrated intentional burial pattern prompted the BCA to immediately report to the Cook County Prosecutor’s Office as this shifted the case from only one body to discovery of multiple mass [Music] [Music]
[Music] [Music] graves bearing signs of under 2 m. In
addition to bullet marks, the forensic team discovered another group of traces on the bones of eight bodies, clean, sharp cuts with clear edges on arm bones, collarbones, and lower leg bones. Based on cut depth, contact angle, and bone edge chipping, the team determined these were not animal bites, not impacts from digging tools, but cuts made by a small axe or tomahawk.
Such axe marks are common in wood processing, chopping branches, clearing paths, or cutting logs. Many members of the Gunflint Seven were recorded as owning such tools, especially 7-in hand axes. The axe cuts were generally not directly fatal but could be acts of control or threat before victims were shot or to disable resisting victims.
In some cases, cuts appeared on the inner forearm, signs of victims raising arms to block or defensive reflex, but no strong defensive bone fractures were recorded indicating resistance was not prolonged or victims lacked full mobility when attacked. Another group of traces also drew attention. Four bodies showed long parallel grooves on the front of forearm bones and wrist bones.
These grooves were straight, parallel, and exactly the width of the sled dog tie ropes recovered at the camp. Ropes tied too tightly or when victims struggled lightly would leave compression grooves on skin. Over decomposition time, these were preserved as microscopic surface deformations on bone.
Based on reconstruction modeling, the forensic team concluded that at least four victims were bound briefly before death, a significant sign reflecting organized victim control behavior. This aligned with prior assessments that the perpetrators rope-tying skills belong to those familiar with sled dog operations, meaning the perpetrator group had clear role division.
One person tying, one holding, others controlling the cabin and operating vehicles. When synthesizing all traces, the forensic team proceeded to the next step, analyzing behavior patterns based on wound sequence and body postures at burial. Many bodies had head bullet wounds, but no other trauma, indicating the simple quick execution method without prolongation.
Some bodies had axe cuts before being shot, indicating victims either reacted or were not fully subdued before perpetrators used bullets to ensure death. The arrangement of bodies in graves, not aligned, not ordered, indicated burial was done quickly, under time constraints, likely at night, and in conditions requiring rapid concealment.
In the two largest graves, bodies lay close together, many overlapping, indicating the perpetrator group lacked large digging tools and used only hand shovels or axes to dig frozen ground. This fit a group of hunters or loggers without excavating machinery. Analysis of the trace maze on bones revealed clear role division in the perpetrator group, two likely using small-caliber rifles, one using a small axe for control or threat, one specializing in tying with sled dog ropes, and the rest handling body transport and driving snowmobiles or
snowcats. Bullet wound characteristics also allowed the forensic team to hypothesize differences in shooting skills among perpetrators, one shooting skulls with high accuracy, indicating possible firearms training, the other shooting at close range with less angle control, creating more inconsistent wounds.
When analyzing recovered bullets, the forensic team found differences in rifling marks, indicating at least three firearms used in the case. This was one of the key findings, as the behavior model shifted from assuming one group to confirming an internal small organization, two armed, one or two handling tying and control, the rest responsible for body transport and grave digging.
Weapons used were identified as common .22 LR rifles for small game hunting. .223 Remington, though not military, much more powerful than .22, and often found with illegal hunters, and small 6-7 inch hand axes matching the cuts.
