Digging a Private Well and Installing Running Water in My Garage
Digging a Private Well and Installing Running Water in My Garage

So I got a drilling rig on its way. Coming here to drill a water well from my garage. So I’m just cleaning up around there. My water supply until now has been this IBC tote here. So I’ve been taking this up to gramps to fill that. But it’s not really a sustainable solution. So this video here will cover the whole process from drilling to just turning on the tap inside of the garage.
We also got to go through the cost of something like this. The plan is to install the water well here. So it’s not in the way for anything. So we’re going to clear off this birches, luckily I got the harvester head installed on the excavator still. So we can use that to process these, So gramps can make some firewood out of that.
They didn’t stand a chance to the wind last summer. We also got to get rid of the bed, Sitting there and clear up here so, nothing is in the way.. Speaking Finnish.
So they’re down to 51m at the moment. But I gotta need to go to work sending off an airplane that wanted to depart. So it’s a few days later now. I’ve been waiting for all the stuff to arrive. I got some of them with me. So I got the hose at least. So we’re going to start off by digging a trench from this pipe into the garage, and well pull that hose in that trench.
So this water table is really high. See how deep this is, so the water is standing at., from the water to this level. It’s around 50cm. So that thing is really high. before starting to dig that in. Let’s just do some quick facts of what they did. So we’re going to do a cross section drawing here. So this is the ground.
Yeah. This is the garage coming here. That’s the drill rig here. And down here where we got bedrock. So at four meters, they hit bedrock. After hitting bedrock here, they kept on drilling and ended up on 60m. Considering the water level here, there’s probably going to be quite a big water pressure forcing water inside this hole.
So I don’t think I need to go down with the pump all the way to 60m. I don’t think I ever going to run out of water in this, seeing.., but who knows? And if there anytime in the future, it’s going to be a low water pressure inside this. We can just throw down some dynamite doing some cracks in that. So the pipe they was pushing down here in the beginning, also known as well casing that thing is around €50 per meter plus tax on that.
So since I only had four meters to bedrock, they used six meters in total of well casing. So that thing is forced down two meters in the bedrock just to seal for any contaminated water coming from organic matter and stuff like that here in the in the dirt section. But yeah, we’re going to go through all the pricing when I get the bill for this.
But yeah, let’s go dig the hose in from this pipe to the garage. So the problem
is, now that this ditch is going to fill with water rather fast. So there’s been a lot of raining. And we also got a lot of cold springs in this area. I mean, you can just see the.. how much that thing is pumping up. Our aim now is below two meters. And the reason for that is that we got really cold winters.
And we don’t want this thing to freeze. ground is in this level. So I got to go down just a little bit more. I think we’re gonna need to make a pump hole here. So I’m gonna throw this pump in there. This thing has a broken cable, so we’re gonna need to fix that. I believe this was working. I’m not sure, but we’re going to try that.
This is the only one I got here, so. So I would like to replace this cable inside of this housing here but this thing has those weird screws and I don’t have the right bit for that. So I’m just going to fix the cable here instead. put this on Come on, get in there.
That is not fitting in there. That is not going to hold here.
Should hold.. Kind of wanna collapse a little bit here
So we hit another water vain here. All right, I don’t know. I’m not going to dig any longer than this. For now. Problem is, if something collapsed here I can’t really reach. But at the same time, I’m not going to get this down to two meters either. I’m gonna just be above two meters. The thing is that it’s gonna be such a mess.
Digging with all the water here. So we’re gonna keep this level. And we’re just going to insulate, above that. We going with that. So this is how the adapter looks. (Pitless adapter) That we’re going to get installed. So water pipe in here and water coming out there. And then we can remove that. So when lowering this adapter down the well hole there we’re gonna need an adapter that fits on the top here so we can get this off and on.
So we’re going to make one. Like that. Right.
So that drill just came clean off, so i got to change that. Let’s do a taste test on this. Yeah. Taste a little bit like iron. The perfect length. I almost thought I’ve made it too short. So this thing is stuck here now.
It’s not going to leak through here. That is all sealed up. So in order to get the hose installed, we’re going to use an adapter like this. Yeah. So this is just to mess up the treads on this a little bit. That will make the tread tape stick better. Otherwise if this are too slippery that thing is also going to start to slip when starting to tighten this So by doing this it’s going to stick better.
So it’s getting rather late now. So I’m going to leave this overnight. As long as that pump is working. Everything is going to look fine tomorrow. But if the pump stops, we’re going to have a bad time. So I’m in the search for tube insulation, I just realized I don’t have enough. So yeah, they didn’t have that here.
So we’re going to check another place. Let’s check in here. All right. So we got 4 pieces. Maybe that is enough. We’re going to see. Oh it is working. Look at that. Well it is kind of amazing, that thing is still pumping off water. And my little cold spring I got there. That thing is also pumping up water. So I think the plan now is to.
I gotta dig up the rest. I gotta dig up onto this piping here. So we got to go up to this level here and get that inside the garage. Look at my little cold spring here. Oh, look at that. We got some shimmering gold there. I think we got to do a little pan here. Looks a little bit too yellow to not pan. I mean, look at this water pressure.
This thing just keeps on pushing. It’s been doing like that for, like, 15 hours or something like that now. Luckily, that thing has to be working all night, I mean, there’s a lot of shimmering stuff there. Look at that. Look at that little nugget there. Is that my little piece to freedom? no I lost it. Was here Now it’s gone.
So you just got to give this a little test pan here. Oh, it. Doesn’t look that good. Nah, we’re still going to need to work. No pension in this.. Nah that was nothing in that. Just like shimmering pyrite The reason I put this yellow pipe that far was that the heat hoses are going rather far out here.
More exactly there. I don’t know why, but I was rather certain that. So I got four hoses. That goes to the heat pump inside of there. And those are going down to the lake harvesting heat from that. This is.. this is one of them. So I was rather certain I had them there. Not here. Well, anyway, we found one that is not good.
Luckily, I didn’t break this thing. I just pull it a little bit. You can see that on the inside. This is the mark where it’s free to dig that way. So this is the last hose at least. So there is nothing more on this side now. I just thought I should watch the film I made when I installed all this piping Just seeing, so there’s nothing I’m forgetting here.
Yeah, well, it could have been worse. Could have been way worse. So this is where the hoses are coming up. That thing has been pulled down. Nothing seems to be broken, though. Nothing is leaking. And there still pressure in the system. But we can Turn off those lines Yeah, we got to leave that for now. We’re going to fix that later.
Let’s keep on digging. So this is a self-regulating heating hose.
So we’re going to pull this together with the with the water hose there. I’m not gambling with any freezes. I’m got to insulate that. I got to put this on and I got to put insulation on top of that. I’ve been through this water drama before. So I know what you should and should not do. You should not cheap out. That’s what you should not do.
when it’s -30 and things starting to freeze. Ah, yeah. I been there. So this is the kind of heating cable you buy per meter. So we gotta need to seal it ourselves. So this is the end of that. So this is the water hose we’re going to use. It’s a 32 millimeter PEM hose. So I got some different stuff
of this hose insulation, but we just gotta use what I got. This is good enough. this is rather Small, but we’ve still got to put in insulation on top of this Oh, I got that thing
That we’re going to need. So this is the controlling unit for the pump. And that is one tiny, expansion thank. So while it’s raining, we can get rid of this. So this was my temporary water supply solution I had. So. So I’ve been having this connected to a IBC tote there. Well we’re not going to need this anymore.
So my pump is no longer pumping. It’s filled with clay. Oh yes, that is filled with clay. Where is my shovel So we’re going to need to skip the insulation inside of this piping here.
Otherwise, these two aren’t going to fit. So the reason I’m putting in this pipe is that electric is going to run through this. Maybe I want an outlet. or some light or something there in the future. That’s why I’m using this, So i can Well kind of future, secure it Without having to dig that up again. So it’s easy just pulling a cable through this.
So we’re going to try getting these two together in this. So there is kind of a sharp bend where this is going out. So I got to. I just got to help it with this hydraulic hose if it needs to be pulled trough there Alrighty Matti, it worked!
Oh look at that. So most couplers now for doing the inside installation here are still on order. So I’m waiting for them. Hopefully they will arrive tomorrow. But I realized I forgot two things. That is the wire that’s going to go to the pump and the couplers for that. So I’m going to go and see if I can find that locally.
So I don’t have to order that. So all the coupler parts right now I’ve been waiting two weeks for those So sometimes it takes a long time for things to arrive. So we’re going to go and see if we can find it before calling it the quits for tonight. Let’s go see if they got some wire here. So were going to get this wire.
Oh, it should be like a coupler like that. But I think this is too small. Maybe this.. I think actually this is going to fit. I mean, you see The pizza place it’s just.. kind of just neighbor with this place. Let’s just scootch in there.. Ah look at that. The finished level here, it’s
going to be around that much material coming here. So. Yeah, it’s not going to be a problem driving over this. That water pressure down here, it’s just flooding from there. And there’s a new cold spring open up here. My plan was to leave this open and install the pump. Just to test that. That nothing is leaking here.
But, It shouldn’t be anything leaking. It’s easier messing around with the pump. Having this filled around. Look at this thing
This has to be one of the biggest spiders I ever seen here, here boii All right. Bye bye. So this water hose here, that is 50m.
So I thought I could I could lengthen this if I want, but I think it’s going to be fine any way. I’m not going to, since I’ve seen already the water pressure here. It’s not going to be a problem that I run out of water. But if that would have been the case, I could lower this a few meters more. I could do that, but for now, I’m just going to leave it so I don’t have to lengthen this.
Now we’re just going to need to aim this thing without seeing kind of hard. When the water level is above that I think it’s some where So I can’t see where that thing is going in. So we’re going to need to get some water out of this. Ground is going to ground. That is good. all right now I can see that thing.
Turn that off. I think I got it in. Is it in? Is that in? Yeah, It’s in. You see how fast that water is filling I mean, I was just closing off the pump. I think I got the water level down to around ten meters. Maybe it’s almost at the hole there now. So, yeah, I’m not going to have a water problem with this. Okay.
So we got our package. So this thing has been repacked. It’s not the original box. It seems like this thing had a. A kind of a tough ride. I mean, even this box with the with the filter is a little bit. But everything looks good, though, I just hope everything is in this. So I ordered a lot of different couplers going from small size to a bigger size.
So I did order most of this stuff on a feeling of what I might need for this installation, but I’m good with that. I also got something since before. We’re not going to need these now. Everything looks so shiny when you put it up like this, but we’re not going to need even half of this. It’s good to have for future project also.
But yeah, we’re going to start with this with the well cap and pull the electric to the hole. There. So we got everything done outside. Maybe we should test this put in the power, seeing that everything is connected and working as it should. Let’s do it. and let it flush for a while. Put it here So I got to save enough
cable down here. If I want to lengthen this. Oh, straight in the goo. Getting ground there. So this wire here, that is only for safety.
So this pump is supposed to hang in the hose, not in the wire. So this is only if the hose breaks. So you can pull that up. So this pink electric tape I got. So a store was selling these out. You got like eight rolls for a Euro. So I got hundred of these. I’m not sure if they had some price error or something like that.
I’m not sure why they was selling this out. These are not as good as the usual black one I got, but it works. All right, let’s go pull that cable. So I think this cable is hard enough so I can pull this without using this pulling wire. I want to save this for for future cable. I’m going to see if we can pull this in without that I mean, the only sharp turn here is the first one that could be a problem.
all right. Can you go outside and keep an eye? scream when it’s when it comes out there? These are not going anywhere. Oh, those are some stiff cables here Yeah i gotta need to go and pull back So let’s start installing this.
First we’re going to need to get from the piping to thread. I’m thinking something that we could screw stuck there. I wonder if we could bend this enough to get that there. Let’s try that. almost like it should be possible. I think we could bend it there. How do we measure how long we need Let’s just take off a little bit at a time.
Just a little stiff, but it should have enough bend radius to get there. Little bit shorter. Look at that. It kind of got stuck by itself here. And now we just screw this in there. So I’m thinking why don’t we use a mounting plate like this. So these are M6. If I try to drill into the concrete there’s so little that’s probably going to crack here.
I got to skip this back bolt here. It’s hard getting that centered. Ah we don’t need that. Yeah. So I’m going to go with this. So the thing with using something like this, the hemp thing is that you can adjust the coupler much better than when using those string or tape. They are much more sensitive for that.
This thing does not care. Got to get this stuck here. So why don’t we put this
there. So my plan now is that we’re going to start off by installing the brain in the system that is this. So this is a constant pressure system I’m going to install and the sensor and expansion vessel. The plan is to have them first. So expansion vessel up there. Since I have all those in the same height I might as well put that in the same height.
And after this we’re going to install the filter. That filter is going to be led with the water into the garage and also into this water boiler which is already connected to my sink here, which is this. So this thing I built a year ago with concrete and steel. So there is a Video about that if you want to check that out.
I’m just going to start on building here. We can kind of go through everything later on, see where we’re ending up and what we forgot and what not. It’s not really any advanced, I mean, water coming in, water is going to go into this. water is going to. Yeah I’m probably going to forget something. I don’t have the wall mount for this, so I’m just going to use this thing.
A little notch here where the weld seam is. So before putting this up we’re going to split the pipe here. So I already have a smaller piece for that. T-fitting here and we keep on going with the filter from here. Come out with this. One of that, this is just going to be too short, but I think we can. Pick one of those.
Let’s use this. So this sensor is going to come here. And we’re putting this box here in order to get that with the correct threads. we’re going to need a small piece. Then we’re going to need this coupler with the thread. And then we got the correct thread sitting here. remove this cable Why don’t we do it like this.
Oh I forgot to mess up the threads. A lot of these couplers are already messed up in the threads. Come like that from the factory. But, you can see this thing was just sliding now. It did not grip. So. Yeah. So it did not help at all. That it’s better. Nah, you know what We putting that like this So we’re going to reuse this.
I only have this couper. I totally forgot about these couplers. It’s not a problem. So if we cut this off and switch that we can come in from. Yeah. Let’s try that. So if we get that thing here Nah it’s going to be too tight to squeeze there. So we’re going to need to get up here like that. And something like this.
And they should meet. So when doing anything with a plastic housing, you’re not allowed to use to use this. That thing is swelling in contact with water and plastic housing like this can’t really handle that. It also says here use PTF tape only for assembly. So we’re going to do that. You can see these couplers are, you don’t need to scrape this couplers.
They are already kind of dented there from factory. Shorten this a little bit. It does not has to be that long. We can put this like that.
Then this pipe will be long enough with T here. We just need to squeeze the T before putting that stuck there. Because you need to come from the side and. Well, you can’t do that here. Like that. So now the water is coming in for the tap there. So we got hot and cold water going from this. The water that’s gonna come into the garage later on.
It’s going to go past this. So we’re going to need this here. Yeah. So this is a future line. So I’m just going to block that off. And that is coming. All right. That we can reach. The problem is you can’t squeeze like that. You need to come in from the side when doing that. So I found this.
We’re going to use that instead so we can get this a little shorter. All right. So these are smaller size. so we’re going to change this. All right.
So this little piggy is going to ground. This is the signal cable. So electric cable for the pump. We can Route that coming in here maybe. That’s going up there. So here we got the incoming power.
Then I use this cable for now. Last thing now. Before firing this up is putting a filter here. Everything is connected now I think. So this incoming electric cable, that is gonna be temporary until I get the correct power installed. So, I mean, there’s an office build that’s going on above here and that thing, is going to be connected to the electric cabinet with all the breakers.
So for now, I’m just going to use this plug for that. But yeah. Where do you think the leak is going to be? when I plug this in. Put that on. So yeah. Oh that is also going to need to be put on. So now the water is going to come in here going to create a pressure with that. That thing is going to control the pressure with this sensor.
The water is going to flow through this. And here to the water boiler that is hot water. And this is cold water that is now going for that tap there. This piece here, that is then going to be connected to the garage for high pressure washer and things like that. Something is clicking here. Oh we got lights Looks like we had a leak.
Oh, quite some explosion in there. So yeah, one of the connections aren’t squeezed. Yeah. So that is what, the tape like this is for. So you’re. Don’t forget to squeeze a coupler. So when you squeeze that you taking off the tape. But I’m guessing the tape wasn’t there when I squeezed it. Must have loosened up.
That’s why I forgot that one. But, yeah, we’re going with this. So at least we got some air out of the system now. Let’s squeeze that thing. Go back there. Test number two. Keep my distance. This time. Mhm.. I don’t really trust this thing yet. I can finally, wash my hands. So much easier keeping clean when you got running water So I went for a coffee at gramps.
So I stopped this pump. And this is still in the same pressure level as. As I left that. So there’s no leak from the well coming in here. So my pump stopped there. It got stuck in the mud. It didn’t take long before this entire thing was filled with water. I can’t really walk on that now It’s too soft. I just got to get rid of everything.
And we’re going to. We got to fill this thing. That is going to be stuck. Let’s rescue that. So I gotta let it dry up here a little bit.
So this filter I installed here, that is just a pre-filter for so I don’t get any sediment and stuff like that inside of. And a couplers that going to get stuck. So I’m just going to keep the spare filters sitting here. So I don’t loose them. Put this care. So. So I’m going to call this done. For now. The main parts are installed and this thing is ready to use now.
So now when I turn on the tap we’re going to get water. But there are still I mean the main electric for this box to be connected. The heating cable is also going to need to be connected. There’s probably going to be another filter here. So I’m going to send in a water test on this water. Seeing the quality of that, it’s probably going to be a high value of iron in this, but that is not a problem.
So I left a lot of room here for further installation. If we need to redo anything here, it feels so good being able to wash your hands. That is something I really been missing. Yeah. You can really feel on the taste that this water contains a lot of iron. And it doesn’t have to be a problem per se. It’s just that it gives off a taste.
So I’m not sure if I’m actually going to need a filter. Just so it doesn’t stain anything, that is the main concern I have. Okay. So let’s go through pricing for all of this. So the prices I’m going to mention are excluding 25% tax. So they are without tax. The drilling company, they charge me €4,200. And that includes everything they did.
Around half of that price is just for establishment for them to get there and and start everything up. That is around half the price. Then the actual drilling isn’t really that expensive. The well casing is around €50 per meter, and in my case I only need six meters of that. Then the actual drilling is around €20 per meter, so it’s not really that expensive to drill a deeper hole.
So you got some buffert. And then we got the pump and the controller unit. I got there with the expansion tank that was €1,850. And I haven’t really calculated all the couplers, the hose going for the, well, the wire, the lid over the, the pipe there, I would assume somewhere around €1,000 for everything.
So that is the prices we reach so far for getting the water as it is right now. So I’m still waiting for more stuff so I can get the water installed in the garage. So with that said, we’re going to call it the quits here. So I outsourced the painting of the garage to my brother and his missus. So they are about to arrive here.
So I got to go and get my sky lift truck ready so they can use that. They already started to paint. So this is all paint painted. Much shinier. All this is also painted here But up there it’s not painted yet
