“He can’t know I’m alive” | The case of Rachael, Karen, and Nicola

He put his hands there and then squeezed quite hard.   Did it hurt when he put his hands around your throat? What do you think he did? This is Rachel Vats, 7 years old.  Just hours before this image was recorded , Rachel was found wandering alone on the side of the road without clothes and covered in bruises.

  The woman on the right is Rachel’s mother.  The police told her not to show any emotion because Rachel might shut down and they needed her to talk.  Can you tell me what happened when the man stopped the car?  He took me out and then led me to a clearing in the forest.   Did he say anything to you when he opened the trunk?   He just said, “Shut up.

” Mm.  Did he take you directly to the clearing or did he take you somewhere else first?  Did he put you somewhere else first? Yes, it takes me straight to the clearing. OK. Notice how for the first time Rachel looks down, her legs dangling nervously. That’s because he’s hiding something, something he does n’t want anyone to know.

Yesterday when we spoke at the hospital you said that the man put you in the back of the car.  Do you remember? The man touched you. For the first time, Rachel’s mother hears the details of what happened to her daughter, making it incredibly difficult to stay calm .  Rachel, however, is too terrified to speak, and what she recounts next is only part of the story.

The only time he touched me was when he put me in the car and then took me out again. The man touched your face. When we were in the back of the car, he covered my mouth with his hand and then grabbed my neck with his hands and put them around me.  Okay.  When he put his hand over your mouth, can you show me how he did it?  Can you show me? I see.

And then you told us that he put his hands around your neck, right? And my neck hurt so much that I couldn’t say anything or breathe.   Did it hurt when he put his hands around your neck?  Can you show me how you did it? He placed his hands like this and then squeezed quite hard. Rachel fears that the man who tried to kill her will come back for her.

  The problem is that he will have to face him again .  On February 7, three days after the attack, Rachel is standing behind a one-way mirror, a few feet away from a line of suspects. And in a moment I’m going to ask you if the person you saw that day is among these men you see here.  OK. But Rachel has no idea that someone in this lineup of suspects has already killed two other girls, and if she can’t point the finger, he’ll strike again.

It is 1990. In a suburb of Brighton called White Hawk, on the south coast of England, 7-year-old Rachel leads a happy life with her loving parents Jenny and Peter. That day Rachel goes skating while her father works in the garden.  She asks him for money to go buy a chocolate bar at the neighborhood candy store .

  It’s around 4 pm when she walks away on her white skates. A little over an hour later, Rachel’s parents begin to worry because she still hasn’t returned home.  when suddenly there’s a knock at the door.  It’s the police.  Rachel is in the hospital.  She was found by a couple on Devils Dik Road, more than 11 km from her home.

   I saw her come out from behind a bush.   She was completely naked, with her hands at her sides, and crying.   Her hair was all messed up. There was blood in intimate areas that I prefer not to mention.   I jumped out of the car and ran towards her, and then she said to me, “Are you going to kidnap me?” [Music] And I said to him, “No, we’re here to help you. You’re going to be okay.

” The couple clearly sees what has happened to him and is horrified.  They rush Rachel to the nearest house and call the police. When the police officer arrived, he simply said, “Do you have a daughter?”  And I said, “Yes.”   That’s when he told me that Rachel was in the hospital.   I’m sorry, it still hurts. After so many years, Rachel Jenny’s mother rushes to the hospital in Brighton, where she is greeted by the Brawood police officer.

Before she is allowed to see her daughter, Jenny is asked to do something impossible.  They tell her that she can’t show her daughter that she’s upset or that it might cause her to shut down.  And for now, the police still have to question her. Devi says to try to be strong, to try not to show it. No emotion.

She was sitting on the bed with a book. And I just sat there with her while she colored. And in a moment I’m going to ask you if the person you saw that day is among these men you see here.  OK? Three days later, Rachel is asked to identify her attacker.  The police have organized a lineup with one suspect and nine look-alikes.

  One of them is a man named Russell Bishop, someone whom the police had previously accused of murder , but in 1987, after being acquitted of all charges against him , Russell Bishop was released.  It all begins on October 9, 1986, the day Karen Hway and Nicola Fellows disappear. What time were they last seen ?  Around 5:30.

   It’s not normal for her to go too far away, unless she’s going to a friend’s house. And who do I talk to? With Haw.  Who is the other mother? Mrs. Felus. Good.  And are they two 9-year-old girls? Two 9-year-old girls. More than 150 police officers and neighbors of the families have been searching the large wooded area near the girls’ homes.

  But after almost 24 hours, with no trace of them, people are beginning to lose hope that they will be found alive.  The story gains national attention and Karen and Nicola’s parents appear on television to ask the public for help. Had she ever run away from home? No, never.  Then they may have run away for fun. No, they’re up to some mischief, but I don’t know what.

Karen has left.  Nicola, both too.   They could only have left if someone picked them up. Come on, darling, please.  Dad isn’t going to scold you.  Please come home.  Please do it.   It is 4 pm on October 10th. Police officer Paul Smith walks towards Wall Park.  a few streets away from where the two girls live, when he has a very strange encounter.

   I was doing house-to-house investigations and, following a radio message, I crossed to the other side of the road where Wall Park is located. A voice from behind me yelled, “Hey, what are you doing?” The voice is that of Russell Bishop.  Russell lives in Muscol and is close to the families of both girls.

  He is part of the search efforts and has been walking his dog. And he told me, “We’ve been tracking all day , but it’s getting late and we’re going to give up.”  And I told him, “No, we have to keep looking.”  And he said, “Well, if I find them and they’re dead, I’ll look for Nick Warner.”  And it was quite strange.

  I mean, why did he say that?  What made him say that? Bishop is known to the police for his criminal record, including car theft, shoplifting, and so on.  Everyone there finds it a bit funny, but his comment doesn’t go unnoticed. As the men walk back to White Park, they hear two boys screaming.   We found them.  We found them.

Russell Bishop runs towards the boys faster than people can catch Paul Smith.   I told Bishop, “Look, keep them away from the girls, and you keep away from them too.” I was coming up behind him. When I got there and stood between him and the two girls, they were just standing there like they were, I don’t know, sunbathing.

 Nicola Fellow was on a bike with one knee drawn up, and Karen Hadawe was lying face down with her arm wrapped around her, like she was asleep. That’s how we found them. Then I went over to them and checked their pulses, and I’m sorry, it still upsets me . I checked their pulses, and they were dead, stiff as little pieces of marble.

One of the police officers came over and told me they’d finally been found, and I said, “That’s good.” And then I asked, “Did something happen to her?”  Alright?   It was the saddest day of my life, the day I lost my daughter. I was in the park when they were found, and when I went to look and they put up the tape, I felt that something bad was happening.

   I collapsed to the floor. The worst thing I ever had to do in my life was go and identify his body. [Music] I had 50 cents.   I told her, “Here’s your allowance, darling. ” Then I had to leave. Crime has a devastating effect on the community.  Everyone is terrified of their own children. Detectives interview more than 1,000 people in what will become the biggest murder house in Sussex.

  One name keeps appearing.  Russell Bishop was always a person of interest.  Everyone was saying, “Why is he doing this and why did he do that?” Bishop is known to both families, so the girls knew him very well, and it wouldn’t have been difficult for him to convince them to follow him into the woods.

  There were multiple sightings of Russell Bishop in and around the area at the time the girls disappeared.  Moreover, a witness says he saw Bishop wearing a blue sweatshirt that night.  The description matches that of a blue sweatshirt that was found lying on a trail near where the bodies were found.  And that path leads to Russell Bishop’s house.

The blue sweatshirt had ivy spores that matched the location where the girls had been found, but not the location where it had been thrown away. There were remnants of fibers from the girls’ clothing on the garment. It became very clear that whoever murdered Nicola and Karen was wearing this sweatshirt at the time they did it.

To confirm they have the right suspect, the detectives have to link Russell Bishop to that sweatshirt.  But in 1986, DNA science was still in its infancy. However, forensic analysis reveals that the red stains on the sweatshirt are not blood, but a very specific type of paint.  The same red paint that Bishop was seen using on the cars of two of his friends.

  This could indicate that it was actually Bishop’s sweatshirt, but they need to be sure. While Russell Bishop is being questioned by the police at the station, the officers take the Blue sweatshirt to his house, where they are greeted by his girlfriend Jenny Johnson.  The first thing he says when he opens the door is, “They brought Russell’s sweatshirt.

” Jenny has no idea that she has just incriminated her boyfriend.  The two officers take a sworn statement from her, which she affirms without hesitation, proving that Russell Bishop was the owner of the sweatshirt worn by the girls’ killer. And we said, “That’s it, he’s guilty of killing these two girls.” He thought there was enough evidence to convict him.  Bishop is the killer.

  I have no doubts. On December 4, Russell Bishop was charged with the murder of the two girls.   He continues to deny his involvement in both murders.   I did n’t think it could be him.  Why would it be ?  He comes home all the time. I used to play football with him on Sundays.  I truly never thought that someone I knew so well would come and do something so terrible.

   In November 1987, more than a year after the murders, Russell Bishop’s trial begins .  The whole country is watching.  Everyone wants justice to be done for the girls known as the forest girls.  And the prosecution is convinced it has a solid case, but there’s something they haven’t been able to take into account.

  When Jenny Johnson, Russell Bishop’s girlfriend, takes the stand, her whole story changes. Jenny Johnson told police that the sweatshirt belonged to Russell Bishop, and in court, Jenny said that Russell Bishop never owned that sweatshirt.  She told the court that she was forced to sign this statement, that the police forced her to.

The prosecution knows Jenny Johnson is lying under oath to protect her boyfriend, but they have no way to prove it because the blue sweatshirt can no longer be linked to Bishop.  The defense argues that almost anyone could have killed the two girls.  The case is falling apart.  After four weeks of trial, the jury is asked to deliberate.

The man who had been accused of murdering two girls in Brighton has been declared innocent. Innocent, guys. Yes. Everyone was astonished.  What could have gone wrong?  We knew it was Bisho.  Everyone knew it was him, and yet he went free. In 1987 there is a law called double criminality which states that a person cannot be tried twice for the same crime.

  Once acquitted, Russell Bishop cannot be tried again for the murders of those two girls, even if the police were to find irrefutable evidence that he is the killer.  As he left the courthouse, Bishop raised his hands and shouted, “I am innocent!”   He then hurries through the line of journalists to go celebrate at the bar opposite the courthouse with his brothers and his girlfriend.

The Haw Fellows families are devastated. They know that justice will never be done for Karen and Nicola. You feel like everyone is laughing at you, you feel like they’re looking at you as if they think those girls’ lives had no value, as if they meant nothing. I was so angry. I thought, who on earth could have done it then?   It has been less than 4 months since Russell Bishop was acquitted of the murder of Karen Hadawe and Nicola Fellows.

  Since the trial, Bishop has been trying to readjust to family life.  As the months go by, an unjustly accused Brussell Bishop will monopolize attention while the country forgets about the real victims.  Sasex police are convinced Russell Bishop is guilty and that they had the right man, but with the double jeopardy law there is no point in continuing the investigation.

  This infuriates public opinion, which demands answers.  Nicola and Karen’s parents are determined that the case will not be abandoned .  There are two girls in a Brighton cemetery and, if only for their sake, we have to get to the bottom of this. 50 people set off on a march from Brighton’s White Park.

  As part of the protest, a petition was delivered to the police requesting that the case be reopened. I am convinced that we must find my daughter’s killer.  I will not rest until the person responsible is brought to justice. August 19, 1989. The parents organize a march to force their ex-boyfriend’s police to reopen the case.

  Russell Bishop is among those participating in the protest.  I suppose some people will be surprised that you are now joining the parents of the two murdered girls, having been accused of their murder yourself. People are very surprised.  Keep asking me why I keep going and going.  And I don’t stop . The fact is, I want the case reopened.

  My name will not be cleared until the person responsible has been brought to justice. [Music] Everyone who knew anything about the case was horrified to see him behave like that.  If he had any decency he would have locked himself away, but he had to put himself at the center of everything so that people would see him. Everyone can see that Russell Bishop is using the protest organized by the victims’ families as a platform to improve his public image.

Seeing Russell Bishop so smiley and cooperative, and seeing the parents of the murdered girls, I knew immediately that he had done it.   It was absolutely chilling. Following his acquittal, Bishop received 15,000 pounds from the News of the World newspaper for publishing his version of the story.

  As victims of this miscarriage of justice, the Bishop family explicitly frames Barry Fellows, Nicola’s father, as the prime suspect in the article. He said that during the police investigation, nine people appeared to be suspects, and Barry Fellos was one of them. He said it was not unusual for a father to kill his daughter.   It has been more difficult to deal with in the sense that you have been accused of possibly being involved in this whole matter.

   Do you think anyone could believe I killed my daughter?  I don’t believe it.  Not at all.   I do n’t believe it.   I categorically deny it. I loved her.  However, after a full investigation by Sussex police, they found the allegations to be unfounded.  Barry is completely innocent and acquitted of all charges, but the damage has already been done.

The house was covered in graffiti that read, “Murderer, we do n’t want you here. Get out, you despicable people!” Nicola’s father, Barry, felt he had to make a statement about the rumors and suspicions circulating about him. “Many have accused me of various crimes that aren’t true. This not only harms me personally, but it harms my wife and son even more .

Russell Bishop got what he wanted. He’s no longer the villain of his community, and on February 2, 1990, the Sosex police sent Bishop a letter confirming that the case of the girls in the woods was officially closed, meaning someone had escaped a murder. February 4, 1990. Two days after Bishop received that letter, seven-year-old Rachel was abducted.

Let’s talk about what we discussed yesterday in the hospital, okay? The camera’s on. Yes. Around 4 p.m., Rachel went out rollerblading while her father worked in the garden. It was very sunny, very hot. That day, my dad gave me a pound to go to the local sweet shop , but since we hadn’t lived there long and I didn’t know the place well yet, I got lost.

And what did you want to buy? I wanted to buy a Twix and  A Mars bar. Okay. Did your dad say anything to you? Yes, he said, “Be careful.” While I was trying to find my way back home, I saw a man fixing his car, and it caught my attention because my dad is a mechanic. So, since I was lost and saw that he was a mechanic, just like my father, I approached him and asked for directions.

Rachel doesn’t have time to react. Without a word, the man pulls her off the street and puts her in the trunk of his car. Then, the car speeds off . Rachel is terrified, but she doesn’t lose her composure. She searches in the trunk, illuminated by the brake lights, and finds a can of W-40 and a hammer.

 She starts banging on the trunk lid as hard as she can, screaming at the top of her lungs. I yelled that I would give him all my money because I still had the pound my dad had given me in my pocket, and his only response was, “Shut up now, or I’ll kill you, kid.” Then Rachel starts untying her roller skates and takes them off because she knows that without them, she has a better chance of escaping when the  The man opened the trunk.

Can you tell me what happened when the man stopped the car? He took me out and then drove me to a clearing in the woods. And did he take you directly to the clearing or did he take you somewhere else? Or did he take you somewhere else first? He took me directly to the clearing. Hmm. Yesterday when we were talking at the hospital you said the man put you in the back of the car.

 Do you remember that? The man touched you. The only time the man touched me was when I got in the car and then he took me out again . With her mother sitting next to her in the interrogation room, Rachel admits to part of the story. She doesn’t say anything about what happened in the back seat of the car, and for the investigators, that means she does n’t remember it.

 I have a big secret. It’s been in my head for the last 30 years. Everyone was convinced that Bishop only sexually assaulted me after I lost my breath. I do n’t know if I knew that at the time. What I do know is that the reason I did n’t talk to my parents or tell them before was  Because I was ashamed. When we arrived in the car, ah, Devil Stike pulled me out of the trunk and threw me in the back seat.

 He told me to take off all my clothes , and of course I obeyed. I was conscious when he sexually assaulted me. The man puts his hands on her neck. Rachel can’t breathe, but before she can say anything, she faints. The man takes Rachel into the woods and abandons her, convinced she’s dead. When she comes to, the girl is alone and can’t stand .

 She gropes her way out of the bushes, but she’s dizzy and keeps getting weaker. I only remember that it was very cold and I knew I had to find help. I saw some lights in the distance. My first thought was that it was him again and that he was coming to finish me off. But she quickly realizes that if she does n’t get closer to those lights, she’s going to freeze to death.

When she finally sees a figure in the darkness, it’s a young couple who offer her a blanket and their help. After being admitted to the hospital, Rachel is reunited with her mother. I was worried that my mother would  She was angry because I’d lost my new sweater. That scared me. Rachel didn’t want to go to bed when she got home, and I remember her sitting on the sofa picking the thorns that were still in her feet.

It’s not worth dwelling on. As a parent, you think you can protect your family, your children, but you can’t. You ca n’t blame anyone but yourself, because that’s what you’re there for as a parent. You don’t try to raise them, you try to protect them, but you still fail and carry all that guilt until the end.

At dawn, more than 100 officers began the most intensive search conducted by Sussex police since the Wild Park murder investigation . With the details provided by Rachel, the police were able to quickly begin their investigation. They were looking for a white man with a mustache who drives a red car. Sharing the information with the unit, the detectives were informed that someone they knew all too well had been seen driving a red car that same night. Russell Bishop.

A couple of officers approached his house and found him cleaning his car as if he were doing something special. her life depended on it. When we opened the trunk lid, we saw the WD40, we saw the hammer, we saw the chip marks on the trunk lid. There were fibers from clothing that later matched those the girl was wearing.

There was blood and semen immediately linking the girl to Bishop. Bishop was arrested immediately. In an effort to ensure that Bishop did not escape justice, Rachel was asked to confront her attacker once more. I remember the lineup. I asked the police if Bishop was able to see me. In a moment, I’m going to ask you to please come to the window and look closely at the line of men sitting there.

And in a moment, I’m going to ask you if the person you saw that day is among these men you see here. Okay. I don’t think I let go of my mother’s hand at any point. I think he’s number nine. Do you think he’s number nine? The man Rachel points to is indeed Russell Bishop. On December 13, 1990, Russell Bishop was found guilty of kidnapping and assault.

  Indecent exposure and attempted murder. Today, a man who was acquitted of murdering two girls in Brighton three years ago has been jailed for attempting to murder a seven-year-old girl. The judge sentenced Bishop to life imprisonment for attempted murder, 10 years in prison for kidnapping, and 10 years in prison for sexual assault.

 And while everyone is relieved that he has finally received what he deserved, there is no celebration in the courtroom, because everyone in Brighton is convinced that Bishop killed Karen and Nicola in 1986 and should never have been allowed to go free. The parents of the two Brighton girls, whose murders Bishop had been acquitted of three years ago, were among those present in the courtroom.

 It is no less than he deserved, and that’s not all. I’m telling you right now, my fight for justice for my daughter will not stop. Justice prevailed for that girl, but sadly, there was no justice for Karen and Nicola. I must say that  Life goes on, but no, it’s not like that. This feeling hasn’t gone away. You know what I still do? I still go to stores and still look for clothes for her, thinking, “Hey, I think that would look good on her.

” And while the families of Karen Hway and Nicola Fellows continue fighting on behalf of their daughter, Rachel returns to her family life. The court grants her anonymity, and she hopes that everything will go back to the way it was before that horrific episode. For more than a decade, she has managed to lead a normal life until one day the phone rings.

 Russell Bishop is on parole. I thought a life sentence was a life sentence . Then I found out that a life sentence in Russell Bishop’s case meant only 14 years. Only because he didn’t actually kill me. The year is 2004. Rachel is now 22 years old, and the news is terrifying. Bishop, who has spent the last 14 years in prison serving his sentence, is now about to be released at any moment.

 She is convinced that he will come back for her. It is 2005, and there is finally hope for Rachel and for the  Fellows and the Hawes. The double jeopardy law, an 800-year- old law that prevents someone from being tried twice for the same crime, is repealed. This means that with new evidence, Bishop could be tried again for the 1986 murders of Karen and Nicola , but they have to act quickly before he is released on parole.

 The most important thing they need is new and compelling evidence to support their case, and they must keep in mind that they will only have one chance to present it in court. A new investigation is opened into the 1986 murder case , but gathering new and convincing evidence proves more difficult than expected. She used to have nightmares in which he climbed a ladder, broke in through her bedroom window,  and came to kill her.

Since that call to Rachel, she is terrified by the idea that Bishop has been released. She has developed a condition called agoraphobia that prevents her from leaving the house. As the years go by,  Bishop’s parole is repeatedly denied, but until he is finally locked up, Rachel  She would never feel at ease.

 Finally, in 2013, there was a glimmer of hope in the case. The sweatshirt remained crucial to the investigation. Bishop had always denied any knowledge of the garment, and Roy Green decided to carefully examine the inside of a tear in the sweatshirt’s cuff. Subsequent tests confirmed that it contained Bishop’s DNA. The discovery was huge, but there was just one problem.

 Scientists couldn’t guarantee that the sweatshirt wasn’t contaminated in 1986. This meant that any new DNA found on the sweatshirt was inadmissible. However, when the bodies were found, forensic pathologists had taken tapes from the girls’ arms and kept them sealed. At the time, they did n’t have the science to test them for DNA.

When we examined those tapes, we recovered a mixed DNA profile of Russell Bishop and Karen Hadway. This meant a great deal to us. It was Russell Bishop’s DNA on Karen Hadway’s arm. This could be the new, compelling evidence that investigators needed to win this case. In May 2016, Russell Bishop was removed.

  From his cell. He’s convinced his parole has finally arrived. I’m arresting you as a suspect in the murders of Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadawe around Thursday, October 9, 1986. Tell us what happened to Nicola. No comment. I have nothing to say. I’m not responsible for this. I have nothing to do with it . I’m innocent. Now, some damn evidence comes to light.

Magically, 30 years later. This case has nothing to do with me. Nothing to do with me at all. My name is cleared. After his questioning, Bishop is arrested and returned to his cell to await his third trial. With his DNA on the girl’s arms, the prosecution is convinced they have a solid case, but they have no idea that Bishop has a plausible explanation for it and could destroy the case once again.

 Russell Bishop arrives in a prison van for the start of his second trial, accused of murdering two girls 32 years ago. Their families were in court for the start of the trial. It’s been a long time,  But I’m smiling. We’re grateful. For the first time, we felt like someone really listened to us and didn’t slam the door in our faces.

33 years, right? But then we said we’d come to this park every year  until justice is done. That’s right, justice. October 16, 2018. Russell Bishop’s retrial begins for the murders of Karen Hadawe and Nicola Fellows. As the prosecution presents evidence to the court, the defense insists the sweatshirt wasn’t Bishop’s and explains why his DNA was found on Karen’s arm.

According to Bishop, when the bodies were found, he went to check their pulses, something he had apparently told Detective John Morton back in 1986. I got a call asking me to go to the park where some local kids had found the bodies of the two girls. Their heads were down, and they were absolutely slumped over.

I was totally shocked when I saw the other kid, who turned out to be Russell Bishop. It was weird because he was standing there dragging  his feet and whistling loudly. I asked him what had happened, and he said, “I jumped over the tree and went over to the girls and took their pulses on their necks.” That’s really strange, because from what the other two had said, I knew that Russell Bishop hadn’t gotten much closer than 5 meters to those girls that afternoon.

Russell Bishop’s argument crumbles in front of the courtroom. The truth is far more disturbing. After strangling the two girls to death that day in 1986, Russell Bishop participated in the search the following morning. He wanted to be the first at the crime scene to take their pulses so he could explain why his DNA was on the girls.

 The problem is, he never had the opportunity to get close enough. Bishop is furious; he knows he’s about to lose. That’s when the prosecution reveals one last piece of evidence against Bishop: letters written by Bishop while he was on trial in 1987, sent to a 13-year-old girl. The letters are read aloud to the court and were  The letters were incredibly sexually suggestive, and he clearly didn’t want them read in court, which is why he started shouting from the dock that he wanted a retrial.

 But the letters were read anyway. On December 10th at 12:30 pm, the jury was sent to deliberate. In less than two hours, they returned with a verdict. A convicted pedophile has been found guilty of the murder of two girls who were found strangled and sexually assaulted near Brighton 32 years ago. Russell Bishop is finally convicted of the murders he committed in 1986, for which he evaded justice for 32 years. He is sentenced to an additional 36 years.

This is a moment to remember the two girls. We must also acknowledge the courage, persistence, and dignity of Karen and Nicola’s families. I sincerely hope that the families can now find some peace and move on to the next chapter of their lives. I said I would not stop fighting until justice was served. And now those little souls can rest in peace.  Peace.

I used to go to the bedroom where her things were in the trunk. When I opened the trunk, all her things were there, and I could smell her. When the trial was over and we had the verdict, I said, “Well, now she can go to her angel bed and rest in peace.”  She doesn’t have to worry about anything now. And I know it’s close.

   I know we can’t see or feel her, but she’s there in spirit. If I could have one wish or one dream come true, I would ask to spend a day with you and I would pray that it would last.  I would run towards you and hug you.  We would laugh and smile again.  We would talk about the old days and see how we’ve both been. My wish was not granted, but it will remain intact and true.

  I would give up most of my mornings in exchange for a yesterday with you. Since the trial, Rachel has embarked on a journey to regain control of her life.  She has built a beautiful family with her beloved husband. The reason I fell in love with Jay was that he made me realize what it was like to be truly loved and he always made sure I felt it.

[Music] I had my first daughter when I had just turned 22.   It turned out to be absolutely beautiful. All my children have been. I am very proud of each and every one of them.  They are more than I wished for. I hope that by encouraging myself to tell my story I can bring myself back to the here and now.

   I do n’t want to continue being a prisoner of my past.  I’m tired of it and I’m hoping I can finally stop hiding. I want the freedom to go out, share moments with my family, enjoy outings with my husband, and even go to a bar to sit in the beer garden and enjoy the sun. I am willing to do whatever it takes . I’m still here, you know? And I still have a chance to do something.

In 2021, Jenny Johnson, Bishop’s girlfriend , was convicted of perjury.  She was sentenced to 6 years in prison.  In 2022, Russell Bishop died while still in prison.   Okay , that’s all.  That was great.  Okay, it’s 2:30 now and we’re wrapping up the interview.
