The tool specifically built to compare crime scene DNA against a database of known offenders. The search came back empty. No match, no name, nothing. To understand why this happened, why a perfect genetic fingerprint of the killer could exist and still lead nowhere, you have to understand what Cotus actually is, and more importantly, what it isn’t. COTUS doesn’t contain
everyone’s DNA. It’s built almost entirely from profiles collected during arrests or convictions for qualifying felony offenses. If you were never charged with a felony and your DNA was never legally compelled into that system, you simply don’t exist inside it, no matter how violent your history actually was.
And there was a second, even more permanent obstacle working against investigators. COTUS wasn’t established as a national system until 1998. Bruce Lindall had died in April of 1981, 17 years before that system even existed. Even if he’d had a felony conviction on paper, which he didn’t, there would have been no living person to arrest.
No swab to collect after the fact. The DNA was sitting right there, a perfect match waiting to be recognized. But the entire infrastructure built to catch killers through DNA was designed around living offenders with criminal records. Bruce Lindall was neither alive nor on record. He was in every sense that mattered to the system invisible.
For nearly two more decades, the case sat frozen in that gap, solved in principle. The evidence sitting in a lab freezer, but with absolutely no mechanism to connect it to a name. It would take an entirely different kind of science. One that had nothing to do with criminal databases at all to finally close that gap.
In early 2019, Detective Chris Lden of the Lisa Police Department took over management of the department’s cold case files. Pamela Mar’s murder had been sitting unresolved for 43 years at that point. The first was DNA phenotyping, essentially reading physical traits directly out of genetic code by analyzing specific markers in the crime scene DNA. Scientists could predict what the unknown suspect likely looked like, decades before anyone had ever laid eyes on him. Their analysis pointed toward a man with blue or light colored eyes, blonde or light brown hair, and a fair complexion.
From that data, Parabon generated a three-dimensional digital composite of his probable face. When investigators later compared that digital composite to a 1970s yearbook photograph, the resemblance was striking enough to stop them in their tracks. But phenotyping alone couldn’t hand them a name. For that, they needed the second far more powerful technique Parabon was applying, genetic genealogy.
This is where the case takes its most fascinating turn because the method that finally identified Pamela’s killer had nothing to do with catching criminals at all. It was built for people trying to find long-lost relatives. Leading that effort was CC Moore, Parabon’s chief genetic genealogologist. Moore uploaded the crime scene DNA profile to open source genealogy databases, the same kind of platforms ordinary people use to research their own family history.
The system began surfacing distant genetic relatives of the unknown suspect. Roughly 20 matches in total, ranging from second cousins to fifth cousins. None of them had any idea they were connected to a killer. They were just names in a database who happened to share small fragments of DNA with the profile from Pamela’s genes.
From there, Moore did something that sounds almost impossible. She worked backward using public census records, obituaries, vital statistics, and land registry documents. She began reconstructing a family tree, not forward from a known person, but backward from a collection of anonymous genetic fragments, painstakingly connecting cousin to cousin, generation to generation, until the branches converged.
They converged on a single family, four brothers, raised in the western suburbs of Chicago. When investigators cross-referenced that family against the mid1 1970s timeline, two of the brothers stood out immediately. Both had been living in the western suburbs at the exact time Pamela Mau was murdered. One of those two brothers was Bruce Everett Lindal.
The same man who had sat across from detectives in 1976 told them he knew Pamela through a mutual acquaintance and walked out of that interview room a free man. 43 years later, a family tree built from strangers DNA had walked investigators right back to his door. But identifying a suspect through genetic genealogy isn’t the same as proving it in a way that would satisfy science, let alone a courtroom.
Investigators needed a direct comparison. Lindal’s own DNA matched against the evidence from 1976, and Bruce Lindall had been dead for 38 years. There was no living Bruce Lind doll to arrest, no cheek swab to collect, no interrogation room waiting. If investigators wanted absolute direct confirmation, there was only one place left to look, his grave.
In November of 2019, DuPage County authorities obtained a judicial search warrant and carried out something most true crime cases never require, a court ordered exumation. The operation was carried out jointly by the Lizel Police Department, the Dwage County Sheriff’s Office, the DuPage County Corer’s Office, and investigators from the state’s Attorney’s Office.
Lindol’s remains were disinterred, and bone and tissue fragments were carefully harvested for direct DNA extraction. This wasn’t done quietly by accident. It was done under seal, deliberately kept out of public view while the lab work was completed. The samples were split and sent to two independent facilities. Running the comparison through two separate independent labs wasn’t just thoroughess for its own sake. It was about building a result strong enough that no one could ever credibly dispute it. In December of 2019, the results came back from both laboratories and they matched. The genetic profile pulled from Bruce Lindal’s exumed remains was directly compared to the DNA preserved from Pamela Mau’s genes since 1976, and it was without ambiguity the same man.
Detective Louden didn’t wait for a press conference to deliver that news. Pamela’s father and brother had left Illinois not long after her murder, unable to remain in the place where it happened, eventually settling in Texas. Lodon traveled there personally, sitting down with them to explain more than four decades later that their daughter and sister’s killer finally had a name.
There was still one number left to calculate, the kind of number that turns a strong match into an unshakable one. When forensic analysts ran the final statistics, they determined that the odds of this DNA belonging to anyone other than Bruce Lindall were 1 in 1.8 quadrillion. For context, that’s a number so large it’s almost meaningless in human terms.
Far greater than the number of people who have ever lived on Earth. It wasn’t just a match. It was, for all practical purposes, absolute certainty. On January 13th, 2020, the exact 44th anniversary of the morning Pamela’s body was found on College Road. DuPage County officials stood in front of cameras and said her killer’s name out loud for the first time.
But naming him raised an unavoidable question of its own. who exactly had been walking around suburban Chicago all those years hiding in plain sight. Bruce Everett Lindal was born on January 29th, 1953 in St. Charles, Illinois to parents Jerome and Arlene Lindal. He grew up in Chicago’s western suburbs, graduated from Downers Grove North High School, and went on to earn a vocational degree in electromechanics.
Over the following years, he lived at several addresses across the region, Sulfusburg Avenue in Aurora, along with residences in Downer’s Grove and Neapville. On paper, there was nothing about him that stood out. Investigators who later studied his case described him as a smooth talker, someone personable enough to put people at ease, to gain access to private spaces and vulnerable situations without raising alarm.
He was known as an avid skydiver, someone who showed up at local social venues, blending easily into ordinary suburban life. That ordinariness was in many ways his most effective weapon. Pamela Mau was not an isolated act. She was, investigators now believe, one entry in a much longer and darker pattern. In June of 1980, Lindal abducted and a 25-year-old woman named Debra Collander in Aurora.
Unlike Pamela, Collander survived the immediate assault she escaped, and she did something almost no one else connected to Lindal had managed to do. She went to police and filed formal charges. For the first time in his life, Bruce Lindal was facing a real felony prosecution with a living witness prepared to testify against him.
He never let it get that far. In the weeks before trial, Collander vanished after leaving her job at a hospital. The charges against Lindal with no witness left to testify were dismissed. Two years later, in April of 1982, her partial remains were discovered buried in a shallow grave on a farm in Asiggo Township. Investigators later learned something even more chilling.
Before her disappearance, Lindal had approached an acquaintance and offered money and drugs to have Collander murdered before she could take the stand. That solicitation wasn’t reported to police until after Lindal himself was already dead. It’s a pattern that repeats through his known history, not just violence, but the deliberate, calculated elimination of anyone who threatened to expose him.
And it very nearly worked indefinitely. What finally stopped Bruce Lindall wasn’t an arrest, a trial, or a conviction. It was another one of his own victims fighting back. On April 4th, 1981, Lindal spent the evening bowling with an 18-year-old named Charles Robert Chuck Huber Jr. At some point that night, Lindal persuaded Huber to come back with him to an apartment in Neapville.
What happened next was fast and violent. Once inside, Lindal launched an unprovoked knife attack, stabbing Huber 28 times. But Huber didn’t die passively, he fought back hard, and in the chaos of that struggle, Lindal’s own 6-in kitchen knife plunged into his upper thigh, severing his femoral artery. Bruce Lindal bled to death on top of Charles Huber’s body in that Neapville apartment.
When Neapville police arrived, they found both of them there together. There’s a brutal, almost unbelievable irony sitting at the center of this moment. The same violence that killed Charles Huber also killed Bruce Lindal. And in doing so, it accidentally preserved him. Because he died in 1981, he never faced trial for Huber’s murder or for anything else.
But because he died, his body stayed in the ground, undisturbed and identifiable for the next 38 years, right up until the moment DNA technology finally caught up to what he’d done. If Lindol had lived, if he’d simply survived that struggle and walked away, there’s no guarantee investigators would ever have had a body to exume or DNA to test at all.
His death in 1981 should have been the end of the story. Instead, it became the reason the story could eventually be finished. When police searched the apartment and his other known residences following his death, they found something that turned a suspected predator into a confirmed one. Investigators recovered a box containing hundreds of 35 mm photographic slides, candid, vulnerable, and explicit images of dozens of young women and teenage girls, most of them never identified.
Among those slides was a photograph of 16-year-old Deborah McCall, a Downer’s Grove North High School student who had vanished without explanation in November of 1979. That box of photographs sat in evidence storage for decades. Its full significance not fully understood until Detective Lden reopened the cold case files nearly 40 years later and began auditing its contents piece by piece.
What he found didn’t just point toward one more possible victim. It suggested Bruce Lindal’s crimes stretched far wider than anyone in 1981 had ever imagined. Once Bruce Lindall was formally identified as Pamela Mer’s killer, investigators had to confront an uncomfortable question. If he’d been operating undetected for years, what else had he done? Officials now consider Lindall a suspect in as many as 9 to 12 homicides in nine committed across Chicago’s western suburbs between 1974 and 1981. Not all of those cases carry
the same level of proof, and law enforcement has been careful publicly to draw a hard line between confirmed forensic matches and unproven suspicion. Kathy Holly, 19, disappeared from North Aurora on March 29th, 1979. Her body was later recovered from the Fox River. For years, her case sat unresolved alongside Pamela’s.
But in October of 2024, advanced IMVAC vacuum DNA extraction technology, a method capable of pulling genetic material from surfaces that older techniques couldn’t touch, successfully linked Lindal’s biological material to Kathy Hal’s clothing. Her murder is now officially solved using the same genetic profile that first identified him in the Mo case.
Deborah McCall, the 16-year-old whose photograph was found among Lindal’s slides, remains listed as a suspected case rather than a confirmed one. Investigators consider the link highly probable. But without forensic evidence tying him directly to her disappearance, her case has not been officially closed the way Pamela’s and Cathy’s have.
And it’s worth pointing to a case that went the opposite direction because it says something important about how careful investigators have been with Lindal’s legacy. For years, true crime speculation connected Lindal to the 1972 murder of 15-year-old Julian Anne Hansen in Neapville. When DNA testing became possible, investigators directly compared Lindal’s profile against the evidence in that case, and it excluded him entirely.
He was formally ruled out in January 2020. The Hansen case was later solved independently through the same broader genetic genealogy techniques, identifying a different man entirely, Barry Lee Welpley. That distinction matters. It would have been easy in the wave of public fascination following Lindal’s identification to simply attach his name to every unsolved case from that era in that region.
Investigators didn’t do that. They let the DNA draw the line case by case, refusing to convict a dead man of crimes the evidence didn’t support and refusing to let a different killer stay hidden behind a more famous one. What all of this makes clear is that Bruce Lindall wasn’t a single contained tragedy. He was a pattern, one that stretched across jurisdictions in years, largely because no one system was built to see the whole picture at once.
It would take science built decades after his death to finally draw that picture in full. On January 13, 2020, DuPage County States Attorney Robert B. Berlin stood before reporters in Wheaten, Illinois, alongside Lizel Police Chief David Anderson and Detective Chris Lden to formally announce what investigators had spent a year confirming.
More than four decades have passed since Pam Mau was brutally murdered and sexually assaulted, Berlin told the Room. During that time, however, dozens of law enforcement personnel from multiple jurisdictions have kept her in their hearts. Today, that mystery has finally been solved. He went further, marking the moment for what it represented far beyond one case.
This case is the first case in Illinois where investigative genetic genealogy has been used to solve a murder. I’m proud to say with the DNA match, the murder of Pamela Mar has been solved. Detective Lden, who had spent years piecing the case back together, put it more bluntly. We finally put a name and a face to this monster, he said.
And that’s pretty much what he was. He didn’t stop there. Loen spoke openly about the systemic failures that had allowed Lindal to operate for so long, pointing specifically to how 1970s era policing often failed to take female assault victims seriously. a cultural blind spot that let predators like Lindal avoid felony convictions and continue offending largely unchecked for years. Bruce stayed under the radar.
Lden said he was a serial killer, a monster hiding in plain sight. Because Bruce Lindall had been dead since 1981. There would be no trial, no indictment, no courtroom reckoning of any kind. Prosecutors were direct about what would have happened had he lived. he would have faced charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault.
Instead, the case was formally closed under a status that says everything about how this story ends, solved, offender deceased. For Pamela’s family, there would be no trial to attend, no verdict to wait for. What they got instead was something quieter, and in its own way, harder to sit with certainty.
Her father and brother, who had left Illinois behind decades earlier and rebuilt their lives in Texas, chose not to attend the public press conference. They released a statement instead, expressing deep gratitude to the investigators who had kept their daughter and sister’s case alive across four decades and multiple generations of detectives and asking simply for privacy.
