Lead genetic genealogologist CC Moore and her team began comparing shared DNA segments measured in centmorggans between the unknown suspects profile and the people already in that database. The matches that came back weren’t close relatives. Nobody’s brother, nobody’s parent. Instead, the team identified a network of second, third, and fourth cousins.

Blair was a black male in his 40s at the time of the murder in June 1984. In 1984, he was employed at a Fredo Laid distribution facility located just two blocks from 714 North Shaver Street, the exact house where Risa was killed. That’s not a city-wide coincidence. That’s a man who worked day in and day out within easy walking distance of the crime scene, giving him intimate familiarity with the neighborhood and creating a completely plausible opportunistic window during his work shift or his commute.
Blair also had a documented criminal history in North Carolina, a prior conviction for assault with a deadly weapon for which he had served time in state prison. And remember that knife seized early in the 1984 investigation connected to a name recorded only as C. Blair, the one that tested negative for blood using outdated corological methods.
That detail connects directly back to this same man. Crucially, investigators found absolutely no personal, family, or business relationship between Curtis Blair and Rhysa Trexler, or the Monroe family. At some point after the murder, Blair left North Carolina entirely and relocated to San Diego County, California, where he lived for the next two decades. He died there on August 6th, 2004 at around 60 years old. His remains were shipped back across the country to Rowan County and interurred at Memorial Park Cemetery in Salsbury, the very town where, unbeknownst to everyone around him, he had left behind an unsolved murder 15 years earlier.

There was no more ambiguity left.
No more competing theories. No more FBI profile pointing investigators in the wrong direction. The science had reached back across 35 years and named the man conclusively. All that remained was for the Salsbury Police Department to make it official in front of the family and in front of the entire town that had spent three and a half decades pointing fingers in the wrong direction.
On December 3rd, 2019, that announcement finally came. And for one family, it meant something far bigger than just closing a file. On Tuesday, December 3rd, 2019, the Salsbury Police Department held a joint press conference to formally announce the resolution of Rhysa Trexler’s murder. Police Chief Jerry Stokes confirmed the case was officially closed with the suspect’s identity conclusively established through DNA.
Detective Sergeant Travis Schulenberger walked the room through the full timeline, the 2018 retesting decision, the Parabon referral, and the exemation process that followed.
