The American Trick That Turned the TBF Avenger Into a Submarine Killer in Just Seconds

 Standard naval thinking in 1942 held that aircraft were submarine deterrents, not submarine killers. A patrol plane could force a U-boat to dive, denying it the surface speed it needed to chase a convoy. But, once a boat slipped under the waves, the aircraft’s job was essentially finished. In this case, targeting the Japanese cargo submarine I-52, intercepted in the mid-Atlantic, roughly 1,500 km west of the Cape Verde Islands, as she tried to rendezvous with the German submarine U-530 to take on a radar warning receiver, an Enigma machine, and German technical liaison staff.

American codebreakers had read enough of the traffic around that rendezvous to know roughly where and when it would happen, and the hunter-killer group built around USS Bogue was directed into the area, launching aircraft that night.  I-52 went down with her crew, her cargo of raw materials, and the German technology she had just taken aboard only hours earlier. Sunk by a weapon she never even knew was hunting her in waters far from any escort ship or surface lookout that might have given her a warning. By the war’s end, 204 Fidos actually launched in combat, 37 Axis submarines were confirmed sunk, and another 18 damaged a or o, an effectiveness rate of roughly 18%, very close to double the kill rate of conventional aerial depth charges.

31 of those sinkings were German U-boats with 15 more damaged but surviving. Six were Japanese submarines with three more damaged. The weapon success was so immediate that the Navy actually cut its own production order from 10,000 units down to about 4,000 because Fido was killing submarines faster than anyone had projected it would need to.

Each unit cost roughly $1,800 to build a a sub a fraction of the cost of the submarine, the trained crew, and the cargo it took down with it. This wasn’t accidental and it wasn’t simply better engineering for its own sake. The entire concept was built around a single insight about submarine warfare. A U-boat crew’s most dangerous moment wasn’t when they were spotted.

 It was the 30 seconds after they thought they’d gotten away. German doctrine trained crews to crash dive the instant an aircraft was sighted and that doctrine was sound against every weapon those crews knew existed. Diving below periscope depth genuinely did defeat depth charge attacks, line of sight strafing, and torpedoes that ran a straight preset course.

 The dive was the correct tactical response to the threat as the U-boat’s crew understood it. What American designers exploited was the gap between the threat I know about and the threat that’s actually there. A weapon that could only attack what a pilot could see would have been defeated by exactly the doctrine the Kriegsmarine had drilled into every U-boat captain.

A weapon that kept attacking after the target vanished from view turned the U-boat’s own correct trained response into the action that delivered it directly into a 150-ft search circle with four hydrophones listening for its propellers. urgent. This also explains why the Navy went to such lengths to disguise what the weapon was. Every official report referred to it only as a mine. Pilots were briefed that Fido could only be dropped on a target already submerged and unaware it had been attacked, specifically so German intelligence would have no pattern to study and no countermeasure to design.

A weapon’s tactical value isn’t just what it can do physically, uh or so, it’s also how long the enemy stays blind to the fact that the rules have changed. For the better part of 2 years, U-boat crews who crash dived to escape an Avenger were executing a maneuver that, against this one weapon, did the attacking aircraft’s job for it.

 The TBF Avenger itself was never a glamorous airplane. Pilots called it the turkey, not as an insult exactly, but because next to the nimble Wildcats sharing its flight deck, a fully loaded Avenger handled like exactly what it was, a heavy deep-bellied truck with wings. Its 30,000 ft ceiling and roughly 1,000 mi range made it a capable patrol aircraft, but range and ceiling alone don’t sink submarines.

 What turned that rugged unglamorous bomb truck into the most successful submarine killing aircraft of the war was a 680 lb object riding quietly in its bomb bay, built to do something no bomb before it had ever done, keep hunting after the target thought it had escaped.
