Having loyal fans is truly a blessing for any artist. And when it comes to Michael Jackson, many simply couldn’t control their excitement.    Sometimes, a few even lost control during live events and went beyond all expectations. At times, it was Michael who surprised his fans. But other times, it was the fans who surprised Michael.

 Here are some of Michael Jackson’s craziest fan moments. Dancing on the SUV. He had just left the courthouse  and the whole world thought that he would just vanish like that. But instead, he decided to dance. California, Santa Maria, 2004. This year was quite an eventful one for Michael Jackson and he had been involved in one of the most talked about cases of his career.

 There was a media circus all around him. The pressure was enormous. However, outside, a large crowd of people had waited for their favorite artist.  Not the reporters and photographers, but real fans who had come here from other countries just to see their idol in person. And Michael Jackson saw them and instead of leaving the place quietly in his dark car, he simply got onto the roof of his car and started dancing right in front of the eyes of the entire world.

Michael saved this young boy’s life and then he went to meet him secretly without any fanfare or announcement. 1994, Hungary. Bella Farkas was a seriously sick little boy that needed an expensive life-saving liver transplant but his family couldn’t pay for it.

 Michael Jackson knew about this little boy and decided to help him secretly. He paid for the whole surgery himself not making any press release about that fact. The boy lived. However, Michael did not leave it at that and decided to meet the boy personally, in person. This moment became one of the most touching moments in Michael’s life.

 It’s not for plastic surgery, Michael Jackson uncle said.  It was no publicity stunt. The financial assistance was given in secret and the meeting happened in secret as well. Much later this information came to light. Bella Farkas was able to live because of Michael Jackson’s generosity and was even able to shake hands with the man who gave him a second chance.

 There are no words enough to describe how it felt. Jay-Z’s Hot 97 Summer Jam Jay-Z had an agenda. Everyone was unaware of it. Then came the collapse of the roof. 2001 Hot 97 Summer Jam, a hardcore hip-hop fan base. All those people there for rap, for the street vibe, for Jay-Z. But Jay-Z surprised everyone and surprised big time.

 For he brought out the one and only Michael Jackson. In a surprise appearance at a hip-hop concert. From the moment Michael walked into view, the whole stadium changed its character. No screams from the crowd. No, it was a roar. It reverberated through the walls of that building like nothing else ever did. Even though Michael didn’t sing a single note, his mere walk on stage to acknowledge the crowd was enough to prove his appeal really was limitless.

Hip-hop crowds are notoriously difficult to shock. They’ve seen it all. Nothing impresses them anymore. Not until today. You Are Not Alone breakdown. She was nothing but another face in the crowd. But then Michael Jackson made a change. When the star performed at the History World Tour stop in Munich in 1997, Michael personally brought one of the ladies from the audience to the stage in the middle of his performance.

The instant she laid eyes on him, being mere inches from him, something inside her broke into pieces. She did not shout or wave. She fell in tears that could not be stopped. Then she hugged him with all of her strength. Hugging him as if she needed to cling to her life. Security came in. Several men were required to rip her away from him.

The track that played in the background was You Are Not Alone. And in this particular moment, this was literally true for that lady. Arrival in Africa. He landed in Africa and there were already millions of people waiting.

1992, Michael Jackson toured West Africa landing in Gabon and the Ivory Coast as part of a long and cultural humanitarian mission. The reception he got was not something any Western pop star has ever received. There were literally millions of people waiting for him crowded along the roads and streets, villagers who came in hundreds and even thousands just to see his arrival.

 Tribal chiefs, government representatives, citizens, everyone turned up in huge numbers. In Ivory Coast, he was welcomed formally and received an honorary title of tribal chief. He put on tribal clothing and treated like royalty, not as a figure of speech, but for real. The reception made him cry.

 He spent all his life as King of Pop and now in Africa in 1992, he realized what it meant. The Moscow stage tackle. The date was September 15th, 1993. Moscow, Luzhniki Stadium. Michael was in the middle of his performance, totally engrossed in it and pouring himself out in front of an audience of 70,000 fans. But a sudden torrential downpour turned the stage into a massive hazard.

 There was no fan tackle. Instead, the real enemy was the dangerously slick and wet floor. Michael kept losing his footing and sliding across the stage right in the middle of his performance and in front of the whole audience. It is clear from the way he lost his footing that Michael was affected by this sudden weather condition.

 Crew personnel came running to the stage with towels and the water was quickly swept away. The interesting part is that Michael hardly faltered. He regrouped himself and continued with the performance. A a experience that actually inspired him to write his famous song Stranger in Moscow right after. The crowd went crazy. The Heal the World child tears.

It was not a performance. This was an artist telling people what he really felt about things. Oslo, 1992. Michael Jackson sang Heal the World and he invited the children up on stage with him. It was not for show. It was not for entertainment. He held them. He carried them in his lap. He gazed upon them the same way a person would gaze upon something sacred to him.

 These children did not perform. They simply were there with him and the feeling in the stadium could not have been more real than what a pop concert should elicit. The James Brown concert. Godfather of soul saw a young man in the crowd. Something that would become legendary happened after that. August 1983, Beverly Theater.

 James Brown, Godfather of soul himself, is performing in the middle of a concert. The crowd is going crazy and then James Brown pauses. He sees someone in the crowd, 24-year-old Michael Jackson.  You have no idea WHO’S IN AUDIENCE. MICHAEL JACKSON, WHERE IS MICHAEL JACKSON?  JAMES BROWN calls Michael to join him on the stage, completely out of the blue, nothing rehearsed or practiced.

 Michael comes to the stage and performs one of the most legendary improvised acts ever, the moonwalk, the spin, total control over the stage not belonging to him. Crowd was going insane. Two generations greatest performing legends sharing one stage without any preparation at all. James Brown watches with evident pride of a mentor who sees that his student surpassed him.

 Michael had been studying James Brown religiously for years and Michael shows that in this particular moment. The Korean crane climber. Most fans scream from their seats. This one wanted to to into the sky. In the course of the History World Tour performance of Earth Song, Michael was hanging very high in the air in a cherry picker crane, a stunning part of the performance.

 And then, something crazy happened. A fan managed to break past the security measures and started climbing up the crane, up in the middle of the performance, towards the man who was hanging up high in the air. When Michael saw the guy, he did not freak out or call for assistance. He simply held the fan in place to make sure that he did not fall off.

The Virgin Megastore mob. Crowds have always been there, but nothing like that. November 2001, the singer Michael Jackson released the album Invincible.  As a way of promoting the album, he decided to show up unexpectedly at the Virgin Megastore located in Times Square, New York City. What happened next can be called controlled chaos.

Crowds of fans appeared, flooding the entire surrounding area. Leaving no space in the shop, overflowing into the streets, and pushing against all windows. Michael Jackson was sitting inside, calmly signing his autograph, one person at a time. It was enough for many fans outside to get even a glimpse through the window for them to start crying.

Times Square is known as one of the most crowded junctions on Earth, which has an overload of stimulation around all the time. Michael Jackson entered the shop and became the center of attraction. Super Bowl 27 pop-up. The most watched television event in American history, he made them wait. Super Bowl 27, January 31st, 1993, Pasadena, California.

 100,000 in attendance at the Rose Bowl. Millions more watching around the world in their homes. Halftime show starts. Then, descending from above the stadium, four screens, four Jumbotron’s, Michael Jackson makes his entrance, bursting into view all  at once, and the audience goes wild immediately.    Then he comes out onto the stage and simply stands there motionless, again, with that distinctive stillness, the same weapon he used in Bucharest.

Screaming fans, he makes them wait. 75 seconds of total silence until one note is played. Still the most watched Super Bowl halftime performance of all time. Viewers watching on television reportedly ran back from dinner to see what was happening. He transformed a sporting event, the biggest sporting event in the world, into a Michael Jackson concert, and no complaints were heard for a single second.

The Mumbai airport arrival. Never before has anything like this happened in India, and India has experienced it all. 1996 History World Tour. Michael Jackson’s airplane landed at Mumbai airport, and what was waiting for him outside was not even within the scope of preparation of any security service.

 Traditional Indian dancers and performers had been hired for a traditional cultural greeting. All that had been planned, but unplanned was the sheer size of the crowd. Fans had already broken through security cordons. People were clambering over barriers, pressing up to the entourage, trying to touch his car as he made his way through the airport compound.

The Bucharest fainting epidemic. And he hasn’t even moved yet. People started passing out already. Bucharest, Romania, There were more than and fans gathered in the national stadium. The lights went down, the music got up, and then Michael Jackson appeared on stage and froze right in his spot. Done deal. He did nothing else.

 Arms by his side, face straight ahead, no movement at all, and the crowd went nuts. Fans hyperventilating captured in seconds by cameras. Girls screaming until their vocal cords ripped apart.    People passing out and being carried off stage on stretchers before Michael has even started moving.

 He stayed still for almost 2 minutes. It took him only 2 minutes of complete stillness to cause a medical emergency on the spot. There is no artist in history who has mastered stillness like him. He didn’t need to move an inch. Apollo Theater DNC fundraiser. Many legends have graced the stage of the Apollo Theater, yet no one expected anything like this to happen.

 April 2002. The Democratic National Committee hosted a fundraising event at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. The Apollo Theater itself holds immense cultural significance because it is where the careers of many famous artists have been made and broken throughout the years. And the people attending the event were impressive in their own right.

But then Michael Jackson appeared on stage as the long-awaited headliner and all hell broke loose. It may sound crazy to say that anyone could shock the audience at the Apollo, yet it happened. Oxford University speech arrival. He walked on crutches. The audience screamed just like he did when he entered the room on a throne.

 March 2001. Michael Jackson was invited by Oxford University, one of the most reputable academic establishments of the world, to give a speech about child welfare. He had suffered from an  injury to his foot, so he came in a cast and supported himself on crutches. His assistants helped him get out of the car cautiously.

 Nevertheless, once he became visible to the crowds who gathered outside the university building, he received the same roaring welcome as he did when entering any arena. That evening, he made an extremely emotional speech regarding the rights of children, his childhood, and healing process. It was one of the best speeches he had ever given in public.

Grévin Wax Museum chaos. Paris believed that it was ready for anything. However, it was not. Michael Jackson had visited Paris in 1997 to visit the famed Grévin Wax Museum where, quite appropriately, there was a wax statue of himself displayed. While the news about the visit had not been widely publicized in advance, news traveled far and wide.

 And when Michael Jackson came, he found an incredible crowd,    which had gathered at the roads around the museum. It was such a massive and overwhelming crowd that roads were completely blocked. People were everywhere. It was almost impossible for the security guards to maintain control. The situation became uncontrollable because Paris could never have anticipated that.

 Inside, it was just an incredible irony of the real Michael Jackson standing next to his wax figure. Surprising the SMAP boy band on TV. Not even the most famous people in Japan could maintain their composure when he appeared. SMAP was not only a boy band, it was, in Japan in 2006, an institution, national icons. They were known by everyone, regardless of age group.

 Here were individuals who had appeared before millions, interviewed world leaders, and never faltered on camera.  [laughter]  And then, Michael Jackson unexpectedly walked onto the set of their show while they were rehearsing without warning. There he was. The hosts went mute. One fell to the floor, utterly stunned. Others hugged in astonishment.

 These were grown professionals, but they immediately melted into fan girl mode. What makes the video so incredible is that it demonstrates something universal. No matter who you are, no matter how many stages you have performed on yourself, Michael Jackson belonged to another realm entirely. MTV VMAs with NSYNC. The night belonged to NSYNC, but then one person came out and upstaged everybody. MTV VMAs 2001.

 It was NSYNC’s time to shine. They put on a performance of pop, a stunningly polished and technically flawless one. Everything was going great until  Michael Jackson. Michael walked out, did the robot, got into his iconic pose, and stayed there. That was it. Justin Timberlake’s face after this moment spoke volumes.

 The kid looked like he was about to cry from how mind-blowing an experience this must have been for him. The crowd changed from being entertained by a nice performance to being awed by the legendary artist right before their eyes. It was a man who hadn’t participated in any VMAs in ages who walked out for 30 seconds and changed the whole course of the evening.

NSYNC’s performance lasted minutes. Michael’s performance lasted seconds. Nothing else mattered. Backstage meet and greets. This was the day that they had been waiting their whole life for, and then the door opened and they fell apart. The Bad World Tour. After the shows, backstage, there is very little footage of the meet and greet sessions where those few lucky fans who have won the chance to meet Michael Jackson personally come through.

 And the footage is something else altogether. The fans come into the room all put together, all prepared, because they know what they want to say to him. They’ve practiced it over and over again in their heads, and then they see him standing there dressed in his tour outfit, just about to touch him, and their whole preparation falls away.

 They crumble to the floor one after another, physically, and Michael helps them up, always patient with each one of them. 1993 American Music Awards. He was not expected, but then he arrived. American Music Awards 1993.    The show had already begun. Industry experts, celebrities, the cream of the crop in music sitting down, watching.

And then Michael Jackson arrives to receive his very first International Artist Award, and the entire place changes overnight. Whether virtually or in person, the result is the same, utter disbelief. The AMA audience is not just any group of ordinary fans. This is a crowd of people who work in the music business.

 Individuals trained to keep their cool, to not be swayed, to behave professionally surrounded by celebrities. None of it mattered. The moment Michael entered, all professionalism went out of the window. Everyone stood up from their seats. The clapping was immediate and thundering. He was honored with the Best Pop/Rock Male Artist Award, an accolade which he had essentially created during more than a decade.

 But that evening’s response was never really about any award. Unveiling the HIStory statue. He did not come in a car. He did not even come in a helicopter. A 30-ft statue of him sailed down the River Thames 1995. To introduce his HIStory album, Michael Jackson organized one of the most elaborate promotions thought up.

 A 9-m high statue of himself was created and to introduce it, this huge statue came floating on a boat. Sailing slowly down the River Thames right through the center of London. Thousands of people gathered along both banks of the river as far as their eyes could see and when the boat appeared, the crowd went wild. Then the statue was intro duced.

 Massive, golden, impossible to miss. It was an issue of proportion. Michael was not only making music, he was announcing his place in the annals of history. The visuals were simply breathtaking. The King of Pop symbolized by a giant statue sailing through one of the most iconic places on Earth. Dramatic? Certainly. Impressive? Definitely.
