The Reichswald was a dense forest thick with mud and mines. Behind it lay the Siegfried Line, a chain of concrete bunkers, dragon’s teeth tank traps, and flooded fields stretching for miles. The Germans had packed this area with troops and guns. They expected the attack. They believed their defenses would hold long enough to bleed the Allies dry.
They were wrong, and the reason they were wrong had everything to do with what happened at 5:00 in the morning on February 8th, 1945, when over 1,000 Canadian and British guns opened fire at the same moment along a front of just 10 miles. The bombardment that morning was one of the heaviest ever fired in the entire war in Western Europe.
More than a half million shells would fall on the German positions in the days that followed. But it was not just the number of shells that broke the German defenders. It was the accuracy. Most of them farmers and workers and shopkeepers. And the idea that this nation could build one of the most powerful fighting forces in the world seemed, in 1939, like a joke. But it was no joke. Something happened between 1939 and 1945 that turned a tiny, underfunded, almost forgotten military into a force that made hardened German veterans tremble.
The Canadian artillery that fired in the Reichstag that February morning was the end product of a revolution. A complete change in how guns were used in war. All of these numbers had to be gathered, calculated, and applied before every fire mission. It was not glamorous work. It was slow and careful and required the kind of patience that most people would find boring. But it was this boring, patient, invisible work that would one day make German soldiers weep with terror.
The Canadians trained in England for years. The first division arrived in December 1939, and for a long time they waited. They waited through the fall of France in 1940. They waited through the Blitz. They trained trained and trained and trained again, running exercises on the rolling English countryside until every crew could set up their guns in the dark, calculate a fire mission in minutes, and hit a target they could not see.

The first great test came at Ortona in December 1943. Ortona was a small port town on the Adriatic coast, a maze of narrow stone streets and ancient buildings with walls 3 ft thick. But even in this urban nightmare, the artillery made the difference. The 25-pounders responded with precision that seemed impossible in such chaos. Each target required calculations adjusted for the tight confines of the town, for the angles of the streets, for the need to destroy one building without bringing down the one next to it where Canadian soldiers were sheltering. The gunners delivered. Time after time, the infantry would radio a position and within minutes the building would cease to exist. Ortona fell after eight days of savage fighting that cost the Canadians over 2,000 casualties. The Germans called it Little Stalingrad. But unlike Stalingrad, it fell. After Ortona, the Canadians pushed north through the Winter Line and into the battles for the Liri Valley and the Hitler Line in May 1944.
Here, the Germans had built a belt of concrete bunkers, steel turrets from Panther tanks buried in the ground with only their guns showing, minefields, and thick coils of barbed wire. Breaking through required everything the artillery could give. Before the assault on the Hitler Line, Canadian guns fired a massive bombardment that lasted hours, hammering the concrete positions with heavy shells while field guns cut the wire with air-bursting rounds set to explode just above the ground, spraying shrapnel downward in wide fans.
When the infantry went forward, they found gaps in the wire and shattered bunkers. Not all of them, enough of them. Enough of The Hitler Line broke, but it cost over a thousand Canadian casualties in a single day. Through the summer and fall of 1944, the Canadians fought up the Italian Peninsula while other Canadian forces landed in Normandy and fought through France and Belgium.

The turning point came on the morning of February 8th, 1945 in a frozen forest on the German border.
Operation Veritable was the name given to the Allied plan to clear the Rhineland, the last stretch of German-held territory west of the Rhine River. The Canadian First Army, commanded by General Harry Crerar, was given the lead role. Their job was to attack southeast through the Reichswald Forest, break through the Siegfried Line fortifications, and push the Germans back across the Rhine.
It was one of the most important missions of the entire war, and it was given to the Canadians because the Allied High Command knew what the Canadian guns could do. The bombardment that opened Operation Veritable was staggering. At 5:00 in the morning, in total darkness, over 1,000 guns fired at the same instant.
The sound was beyond anything the human ear could process. Men standing behind the gun lines felt the blast waves press against their chests like a physical force. The flash of the guns lit the horizon from one end to the other, turning night into a flickering orange dawn that stretched for miles. In the first 24 hours alone, the guns fired more than 500,000 shells into the German positions.
That is roughly six shells landing every single second, hour after hour without pause. But, it was not the number of shells that made the Canadian bombardment different from every other bombardment in the war. It was the accuracy. Every battery had been calibrated individually. Every gun crew had calculated its firing solution using the same scientific methods that Andrew McNaughton had pioneered in the First World War, and that had been perfected over 2 years of fighting in Italy.

Another diary recovered from an abandoned command post contained detailed entries from a company commander who tracked his losses hour by hour. In 48 hours of Canadian bombardment, he lost his entire headquarters staff. Three of his four platoon leaders, both his field telephones, and his will to continue fighting. His last entry said he was ordering his remaining men to surrender at the first opportunity.
On the Canadian side, the mood was a mix of grim satisfaction and exhaustion. The gunners had worked without rest for days. A 25-pounder crew typically consisted of six men, and during the veritable bombardment, they fired their guns so continuously that the barrels glowed red in the dark. The sustained rate of fire was supposed to be three rounds per minute.
During the opening hours of Veritable, some crews were firing five. The physical toll was enormous. A crew might handle 500 shells in a single day. That was more than 5,000 kg of steel and explosive lifted and loaded and rammed home hour after hour in the cold, in the mud, and the dark. The weight added up. By the end of a bombardment, men moved like old men, their shoulders hunched, their arms hanging loose at their sides.
Men wrapped rags around their hands to protect them from the heat of the brass shell casings, but the rags wore through and the burns came anyway. Blisters formed and broke and bled into the cloth. Shoulders ached from the recoil that shuddered through the gun with every shot.
Backs screamed from the constant bending and lifting. But the worst damage was invisible. The noise was so constant and so overwhelming that many gunners suffered permanent hearing damage that would follow them for the rest of their lives. The blast wave from a 25-pounder firing was powerful enough to rupture eardrums at close range, and even with cotton stuffed in their ears, the crews were taking damage with every shot.
They could not hear each other speak. They communicated with hand signals and with the practiced rhythm of a crew that had loaded and fired together so many times that words were no longer necessary. Load, ram, close, fire. Load, ram, close, fire. Again and again, hundreds of times a day, until the muscles in their arms burned and their backs ached and their ears rang with a high-pitched whine that would never fully go away.
But there were also moments of humanity in the wreckage. Canadian infantry advancing through the forest found German soldiers wandering alone among the shattered trees. Their weapons abandoned somewhere behind them, Their hands open and empty. These were not men surrendering. These were men who had simply stopped being soldiers.
They did not resist because resistance was no longer a concept they understood. The Canadians gave them water and cigarettes and led them gently to the rear. The broader significance of what happened in the Rhineland was becoming clear even before the fighting ended. The Canadian First Army had done what it was asked to do. It had broken through the strongest defensive position remaining in Western Europe. It had cleared the West Bank of the Rhine.
And it had done so with an artillery system so effective that German commanders up and down the front were now issuing specific warnings about the Canadian guns. prepare for a bombardment of exceptional intensity and accuracy. The Canadians had become, in the language of the German staff officers, a strategic level threat. Not because of their numbers. They still held fortified positions along the Rhine. And they were fighting on their own soil now, which made them desperate. The last months of the war were not a gentle slide towards surrender. They were some of the bloodiest months of the entire conflict. And in those final months, the Canadian artillery played a role that was far larger than the size of the Canadian Army should have allowed.
The numbers tell part of the story. The Canadian First Army in Northwest Europe consisted of roughly 250,000 soldiers at its peak. That was small compared to the massive American Army groups operating to the south, which fielded over a million men each. But the Canadian First Army punched far above its weight, and the reason was its guns.
During the Rhineland campaign alone, Canadian artillery fired over 2 and 1/2 million shells. To put that number in perspective, that is roughly enough shells to fill a freight train stretching for miles. And unlike the massive, but often inaccurate, bombardments of earlier years, the Canadian shells landed where they were aimed.
And the predicted fire system meant that every shell was a precisely calculated weapon, not a random explosion thrown in the general direction of the enemy. The strategic consequences were enormous. The clearing of the Rhineland opened the door for the Allied crossing of the Rhine in March 1945, which was the final great barrier protecting the German heartland.
Once the Rhine was crossed, the war in the west entered its final phase. German resistance began to crumble. Cities fell. War armies surrendered. The end was coming, and it was coming in large part because the Canadian First Army had done its job in the Rhineland faster and more completely than anyone had expected.
But the wider impact was not just about territory gained or rivers crossed. It was about what the Canadian artillery did to German morale. By early 1945, the German soldiers’ greatest fear on the Western Front was not the American Air Force, though that was terrible. It was not the British tanks, though those were dangerous, it was the Canadian guns.
This is not an exaggeration. It is documented in German records captured after the war. German intelligence assessments from the final months consistently identified the Canadian First Army as the most dangerous Allied formation in the north, and they identified its artillery as the primary reason. When German units learned that the Canadians had moved into their sector, morale dropped immediately.
Officers reported increased desertion rates. Soldiers who had held their ground against other Allied forces began surrendering in large numbers when they realized it was the Canadians in front of them because they knew what was coming. The effect rippled upward through the German command structure. Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, the senior German commander in the west, was forced to shift reserves northward to face the Canadian threat during the Rhineland battles, and the weakening his defenses in other sectors.

Another senior commander interviewed by British intelligence after the surrender stated bluntly that his men had faced Soviet mass bombardments, American airpower, and British armor, but that nothing had broken their will to resist like the Canadian guns.

With them it becomes something human and something that is much harder to forget. Stanley Todd was a young officer from Ontario who commanded a battery of 25-pounders through Italy and into Northwest Europe. Okay, before the war he had been a mathematics teacher at a small high school, the kind of man who wore glasses and carried a slide rule and could solve equations in his head faster than most people could write them down.
When he enlisted in 1940, the recruiting officer looked at his qualifications and sent him straight to the artillery. Todd took to it immediately. Indeed, the math that bored his students came alive when it meant the difference between a shell landing on an enemy gun or landing in an empty field. By the time his battery reached the Reichswald in February 1945, Todd had calculated thousands of fire missions.
He could look at a map, check the weather data, glance at his gun calibration tables, and produce a firing solution in less than 2 minutes. His crew trusted him completely. They had seen his numbers work too many times to doubt them. After the war, Todd went back to teaching mathematics. He never spoke about what he had done in the war to his students.
His daughter said years later that he kept a small notebook in his desk drawer filled with columns of numbers that she did not understand until she was old enough to realize they were firing calculations. He had kept them not as souvenirs, but as proof, she thought, that the terrible things he had done had at least been done precisely.
On the other side of the guns, then there was a German corporal named Wilhelm Brandt, who served in an artillery battery of the 84th Infantry Division in the Reichswald. Brant had been a carpenter before the war, and had been drafted in 1943 after the German army began pulling men from every corner of civilian life to replace its enormous losses on the Eastern Front.
He had survived fighting in Russia, where the cold was so bad that gun oil froze and men lost fingers to frostbite while loading shells. He thought nothing could be worse than Russia. Then he was transferred west in late 1944, and in February 1945, he found himself in a gun pit in the Reichswald with Canadian shells falling around him.
In a letter he wrote to his wife after being captured, which survives in the Canadian archives, Brandt described the moment when his battery commander ordered them to fire on the advancing Canadian infantry. They fired four rounds within what Brandt estimated was 3 minutes. No, a concentration of shells landed directly on their position with such accuracy that he believed the Canadians must have had an observer watching them from a tree nearby.
There was no observer. There was a microphone array 2 mi away that had calculated their position from the sound of their guns. Two of Brandt’s crew were killed instantly. Rentsch he spent the rest of the war in a prisoner camp in England and he later told an interviewer that he felt no anger toward the Canadians because they had been doing their job just as he had been doing his. He said the only thing he felt was relief that the shelling had finally stopped. Not everyone survived. Gunner James Chicken of the Fourth Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery was killed on March 1st, 1945 during the Rhineland fighting.
He was 22 years old. He had grown up on a farm near Winnipeg and had enlisted the day after his 19th birthday. His letters home talked about the mud and the cold and the food and the noise, but never about fear. His last letter, written 3 days before he died, asked his mother to save some of her apple pie for him because he was planning to eat an entire one by himself when he got home.
A German shell hit his gun position during a counter battery exchange. The counter battery war worked both ways. The The Germans were not as fast or as accurate, but they were not helpless, and sometimes they got lucky. Chicken was buried in the Netherlands in a cemetery that would eventually hold thousands of his countrymen.
His mother received a telegram and then, months later, a photograph of his grave. A simple white stone with his name and his age and a maple leaf carved at the top. She kept the photograph on her mantel for the rest of her life. What? There were also the ones who came home carrying wounds that no one could see.
Sergeant Robert Fraser served as a gun layer, the man who aimed the piece through the entire Northwest Europe campaign. He fired thousands of rounds. The concussive blast of his own gun, repeated day after day for months, left him nearly deaf in both ears by the time the war ended. But the hearing loss was not the worst of it.
Fraser told his family years later that he could not hear thunder without flinching, and that the sound of a car backfiring sent him to the floor. He never talked about what he had seen or done. His son said that on the anniversary of the Reichswald battle every year, his father would sit alone in the garage with the door closed and not come out until evening.

In the days and weeks that followed, the Canadian soldiers who had survived began the long process of going home. They packed up their equipment, said goodbye to friends they had made in the worst of circumstances, and boarded ships that would carry them back across the Atlantic to a country that had changed almost as much as they had.
But before they left, many of them visited the places where their friends were buried. The cemeteries were new then, the white headstones still sharp and clean, the grass just beginning to grow over the churned earth. Men stood alone or in small groups, reading names they knew, saying words they would never repeat to anyone.

The Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery sits on a gentle slope in the Netherlands, just a few miles from where the Reichswald fighting took place. It holds 2,338 Canadian soldiers, each one marked by a white stone bearing a name, a rank, an age, and a maple leaf.
The rows stretch out in perfect lines across the green grass, and the silence is so deep you can hear the wind moving through the trees at the edge of the grounds. Nearby, the Reichswald forest has grown back. The shell craters have softened into shallow dips in the earth. The bunkers have crumbled into mounds of broken concrete covered with moss and wildflowers.
But if you walk through the forest and look carefully, you can still see the scars. The ground is uneven in ways that nature does not make. The trees are all the same age because the old trees were destroyed, and new ones grew in their place. The land remembers what happened here, even if the people who live nearby have moved on.
Uh the legacy of the Canadian artillery lives on in ways that most people never see. Every modern Western army uses predicted fire methods that trace directly back to the system Andrew McNaughton built in the First World War, and that the Canadian gunners perfected in the Second. The mathematics of wind and temperature and barrel wear and shell weight, the use of sound ranging and flash spotting to locate enemy guns, the idea that the first shell should hit the target without any warning shots.
Well, all of this is standard practice now. When an artillery battery anywhere in the world calculates a fire mission today, they are using principles that Canadian farmers and teachers and students figured out in the mud of France and Italy and the Rhineland. The men who did that work are almost all gone now. The last Canadian veterans of the Second World War are passing away as these words are written.
But the knowledge they created endures. For Canada itself, the war changed everything. A country that had entered the conflict with an army smaller than many city police forces emerged as one of the most respected military powers among the Western allies. The Canadian contribution to victory, out of all proportion to the country’s small population, earned Canada a permanent seat at the table of nations.
When the United Nations was formed in 1945, Canada was there, not as a junior member of the British Empire, but as a nation in its own right. Uh with a voice that mattered because of what its people had done. The artillery was not the only reason for this, but it was a symbol of something larger. It showed what a country could accomplish when it took a problem seriously, applied intelligence and effort, and refused to accept failure.
The deeper lesson of the Canadian guns is harder to put into words. It is a lesson about precision and purpose and the terrible cost of getting things wrong. The men who built that artillery system understood that every wasted shell was a life that might have been saved. Every bombardment that fell short or landed in the wrong place meant infantry walking into machine gun fire that should have been silenced.
The obsession with accuracy was not about pride or competition. It was about the knowledge that mistakes in war are paid for in blood.
