During A Party, His Friends Tied Him To A Chair And Did…
More than a hundred people were drinking, laughing, and having the time of their lives at a house party in the quiet city of Port St. Lucy. They were smashing furniture, playing beer pong, tossing empty bottles all over the house, and had absolutely no idea that just a few feet away, the bodies of two brutally murdered people were lying inside.
When the beer pong ball rolled across the floor and came to a stop in a thick, dark brown puddle, no one thought twice about it. Someone simply wiped it off on a t-shirt and the game went right on. At around 1:00 in the morning, 17-year-old Tyler Hadley pulled his best friend aside and calmly said just a few words. I killed my parents.
At first, it sounded like just another sick joke. But a few minutes later, Tyler took him to the garage where blood was seeping out from underneath the door. Then he opened the bedroom door. Inside, the smell was overwhelming. Beneath a pile of broken furniture, blood [music] soaked towels, and scattered household items, part of a human leg was sticking out.
And that was only the beginning. How did an ordinary 17-year-old from a loving family end up beating his own parents to death, then invite more than 100 people over to celebrate while their bodies were still lying inside the house? Hey guys, let me grab you for just a second. I’m really curious where my audience is watching from.
So, I’d love for you to drop a comment and tell me what city you’re in and what time it is for you right now. Thanks for taking a moment. Go ahead and share that in the comments. And now, let’s keep going. It was a house party unlike any other. People showed up to drink beer, have a good time, and enjoy the night, completely unaware of the horrifying secret this house had been hiding just a few hours earlier.
Tyler’s crimes were so brutal and merciless that it’s hard not to see him as a true monster. The story begins in the city of Port St. Lucy, a place where almost nothing ever seems to happen. Located about 125 mi north of Miami and roughly 150 mi southeast of Orlando, Port St. Lucy sits along Florida’s Atlantic coast. The land that became the city was purchased by the Mack brothers in 1961.
Over the following years, about 40,000 acres of swamp land and pine forests were gradually transformed into affordable residential lots. By 1980, the city’s population had grown to around 15,000 people, and by 2019, it had increased more than 10fold to over 200 1,000 residents. Blake Hadley and his wife Mary Joe were among the city’s early residents.
In 1983, they moved to Port St. Lucy from Fort Lauderdale so they could live closer to Blake’s parents. His mother and father had both retired and settled nearby. and Blake wanted the chance to spend more time with them. Blake and Mary Joe were kind, honest, and compassionate people with stable careers. Blake worked as an engineer at the St.
Lucy nuclear power plant, while Mary Joe was an elementary school teacher. People described her as someone who would never turn her back on anyone, no matter who they were. Four years later, in 1987, the couple welcomed their first son, Ryan Hadley. 6 years after that, Mary Joe gave birth to their second son, Tyler Hadley.
Tyler was born on December 16th, 1993. The Hadleys were an ordinary, happy family with what seemed like a bright future ahead of them. Both Ryan and Tyler appeared to have happy childhoods. For Ryan, that happiness continued. But for Tyler, things took a very different path. During her teenage years and into adulthood, Mary Joe struggled with chronic mild depression.
By the time Tyler was 6 years old, he had begun showing many of the same symptoms. Worried that her son might also be suffering from depression, she took him to see a psychologist. After several years, it became clear that therapy alone wasn’t helping. So, when Tyler was 10 years old, in what was considered a fairly unusual decision, he was prescribed Lexapro, an anti-depressant.
For many people, that might sound like an extreme step. And in many ways it was, but Tyler had already become familiar with medical treatment from a very young age. He had been born prematurely and spent the first month of his life in an incubator. That difficult start had a profound effect on his mother.
Whenever Tyler felt sad or was in pain, she became extremely protective of him. The combination of his mother’s overprotective behavior and his depression only made things worse. By the age of 15, Tyler had also been prescribed Aderall, a stimulant commonly used to treat ADHD, along with Prozac, another anti-depressant. On top of that, he was taking hormone medication to treat thyroid problems.
Despite all of these challenges, Tyler continued living what appeared to be a normal life as he entered his mid- teenage years. But even at 16, he was still battling depression. He had also developed bulimia and his self-esteem remained extremely low. Mary Joe came up with what many considered an unusual solution.
Um she worried that Tyler was being bullied at school because of his short height, his weight, and his lack of confidence. So she encouraged him to start taking growth hormone injections. Even with everything he was dealing with, Tyler still seemed like a good kid. Neighbors described him as polite, respectful, and well-mannered.
He loved skateboarding, riding his bike, playing baseball with his dad, and kicking a soccer ball around the neighborhood. Tyler was also very close to his parents. When he was younger, he often stayed awake, waiting for his father to come home from work so they could play basketball together in the driveway.
Sometimes they played until midnight. On weekends, neighbors often heard the Hadley family laughing, splashing in the backyard pool, and enjoying time together. But everything changed once Tyler entered high school. As a child, he had always been quiet, and difficult to read. As a teenager, though, it was as if his entire personality changed.
He became odd, unpredictable, and increasingly troubled. He constantly tried to draw attention to himself. Even in the middle of class, he would suddenly burst into uncontrollable laughter or yell out random things for no apparent reason. By 2010, Tyler had clearly started heading down a dangerous path. His behavior became more and more alarming, and his problems were no longer limited to home or school.
Uh that summer, he and several friends found an abandoned couch, dragged it into a grassy area inside North Fork River Preserve, poured gasoline on it, and set it on fire. The flames spread quickly, creating a serious risk to the surrounding area. Because there was concern that the fire could spread throughout the nature preserve, firefighters had to be called to the scene.
Tyler and his friends, however, received only a warning. They faced no serious legal consequences, but for the Hadley family, it became yet another sign that Tyler’s behavior was slipping further out of control. After that incident, Mary Joe felt for the first time that she had completely lost control of her younger son.
She realized that the usual methods of parenting were no longer working and that his actions were becoming increasingly unpredictable. His mental health wasn’t improving either. Despite ongoing treatment and repeated attempts to find an effective approach, his problems continued and his doctors kept searching for different medication options.
Eventually they prescribed hydroxyazine, a mild medication used to reduce anxiety. They also added satalopram, an anti-depressant known to carry an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in young people. Even then, nothing seemed to improve. And that still wasn’t the end of it. Over time, the list of medications Tyler was prescribed grew even longer, highlighting both the complexity of his mental health struggles and his doctor’s ongoing attempts to find a treatment that would finally make a noticeable
difference. Despite all of those prescriptions, Tyler began drinking heavily. He regularly smoked marijuana, frequently took different kinds of pills, and eventually started using ecstasy as well. It was April of 2011. Tyler was now 17 years old. An unusual silence had settled over the Hadley home.
Tyler’s older brother, Ryan, was away at college and living on his own while Tyler himself was sitting in jail. Um, he had recently gotten into a fight with one of his friends and was arrested on charges of aggravated battery. Because he already had a prior conviction for burglary, the court sentenced him to one week in the St. uh Lucy County Jail, followed by two weeks of house arrest.
After he got home, Mary Joe took away his cell phone. That only made the tension and anger between them even worse. Little by little, Tyler began to hate his own mother. They had argued before, especially whenever Tyler got himself into trouble, but this time felt different. Um lately, it seemed like anyone who got in Tyler’s way became the target of deeper and deeper resentment.
There was more than enough evidence of that. He had just brutally beaten one of his friends. And after his parents took away his phone, he started wishing they were dead. It felt as though the pressure building inside Tyler was growing rapidly and it seemed like he was getting dangerously close to his breaking point.
Saturday, July 16th, 2011. The weather was beautiful, around 84° F, with plenty of sunshine and only a few clouds in the sky. At 11:15 that morning, Tyler posted a message on his Facebook page. Party at my house tonight, maybe. Almost nobody took it seriously. But at 8:15 that evening, he made another Facebook post. Party at my house. Hit me up.
Even though Tyler went to the local high school, he wasn’t especially popular. Um he he definitely wasn’t someone most of his classmates knew well. Um the invitation was open to anyone who wanted to come. So, it looked like it was going to be a big party. Uh, his parents, Mary Joe and Blake, were supposedly out of town.
Exactly where they had gone or how far away they were, nobody really knew. All week long, Tyler had been telling his friends he was throwing a house party, but no one believed him. He had never hosted a party before, and his parents had always been completely against that kind of thing. So, if they were really out of town, they wouldn’t find out.
It was a warm summer evening. As usual, almost nothing was happening in Port St. Lucy. Overall, it was a pretty boring town. There was no beach, no real downtown, and teenagers had very few places to spend their evenings. Even the local parks closed at night. So, it wasn’t surprising that more than 60 people showed up at Tyler’s house looking to have a good time.
Most of them didn’t even know who Tyler was. That was exactly why they didn’t care about destroying someone else’s property. They tore apart the family couch and other furniture, played beer pong on the dining room table right next to the family computer, ate whatever they could find in the kitchen cabinets, and gathered in groups on the front lawn, tossing empty beer cans all over the yard.
Bottles were thrown against the floors and walls, shattering into pieces. Cigarette butts were put out on the carpet, the kitchen countertops, and even the walls. The family computer was in terrible condition, too. Its keyboard was covered in a dried brown liquid. Whether it was beer or Coca-Cola, nobody looked closely enough to find out.
A few people asked Tyler where his [music] parents were, and every single time he gave them a different answer. They’re in Orlando. They went to Georgia. This is my house. They don’t live here. By midnight, more than 100 people had packed into Tyler’s parents house. The party was getting bigger by the minute. More guests kept showing up, bringing their friends with them, and before long, there was barely any room left inside.
The house itself looked like it had been completely trashed for weeks. Furniture was overturned. The floors were covered with garbage, bottles, and random belongings. And nearly every room was in total chaos. It was later reported that there were even visible blood stains in several of the main rooms. It’s possible that someone at the party had simply cut themselves badly.
That’s probably how anyone who noticed the suspicious stains explained them away. People kept playing beer pong. Not a single person realized that just a few feet away, a horrifying secret was hidden inside the house, known to only one person. During one game, the beer pong ball bounced off the table, rolled across the floor, and came to rest in a thick, dark brown puddle.
Justin picked it up, and grimaced in disgust. He had no idea what the liquid was, but he didn’t think much of it. Without a second thought, he wiped the ball on his t-shirt and kept playing. and moments later it was being tossed right back into cups filled with drinks. At around 1:00 in the morning, Tyler asked his best friend Michael to step outside so they could talk in private.
They left the loud party behind and slowly walked away from the house while the music continued blasting inside. Tyler and Michael had been friends since they were 8 years old. Over the years, they had shared countless memories together, so Michael had no idea he was about to hear words that would change his life forever.
They walked all the way to a street sign at the end of the block. There, far away from the rest of the party, Tyler revealed a horrifying secret to Michael. I killed my parents. Michael simply turned around and walked away, not believing a single word. What he had just heard sounded so unbelievable and horrifying that his first instinct was to assume Tyler was making a sick joke or just trying to shock him.
Without saying much of anything, Michael started to leave, not wanting to continue the conversation. That’s when Tyler stopped him and said, “Michael, I’m serious. If you look closely, you’ll see the proof.” Tyler told Michael to look at the driveway. That’s when Michael finally noticed that both of Tyler’s parents’ cars were still parked outside the house.
There was no way they could have gone anywhere without them. Tyler then led Michael to the garage and told him to look inside. After making sure no one was watching, Michael stepped into the garage and turned on the light. That’s when he noticed a bloody shoe print and blood seeping from beneath the bottom of the door.
He immediately rushed back outside and slammed the door behind him. His heart was pounding, but Tyler said there was something else he needed to see. He led Michael to the master bedroom. The door was closed. As soon as Tyler opened it, a horrible stench hit them. What Michael saw inside was even worse. Furniture was scattered throughout the room.
Dining chairs and blood soaked towels had been piled together into a massive heap. Personal belongings were strewn everywhere, and sticking out from the very bottom of that pile was a pale human leg. Tyler told Michael that earlier that day, shortly before 5:00 in the evening, he had hidden his parents’ cell phones so they wouldn’t be able to call for help.
Then he worked himself up, took three ecstasy pills, and went into the garage where he grabbed a claw hammer. When he came back into the living room, he stood silently behind his mother as she sat at the family computer. For 5 minutes, he stayed there without saying a word, thinking about what he was about to do. When Mary Joe finally turned around, he raised the hammer and struck her in the head.
As she screamed, Blake, who had been asleep at the time, ran out of the master bedroom. It’s hard to imagine the emotional pain he must have felt when he saw his own son attacking his wife. For a few seconds, the two of them simply stared at each other. Then Blake asked, “Why?” Tyler answered, “Why the hell not?” After saying those words, he lunged at his father and beat him to death as well.
It all happened within moments. The attack was sudden, and Blake never had a chance to save himself. The injuries he suffered were fatal, according to investigators. That was how the tragic events of that night came to an end. After killing his father, Tyler had taken the lives of both of his parents, turning the family home into the scene of one of the most brutal crimes in the history of Port St.
Lucy. After killing both of his parents, Tyler wrapped towels around their heads, dragged their bodies into the master bedroom, and placed them side by side, face down. The hammer was left lying between them. He then began carrying every bloodstained item he could find into the room, literally burying his parents’ bodies beneath a pile of broken furniture, shattered glass, blood soaked towels, books, a sponge, a mop, Clorox wipes, and even coffee.
Tyler spent more than 3 hours trying to clean up the scene, even so he couldn’t erase all the evidence. One example was the computer keyboard, which was still stained. Another was the same dark brown puddle that the beer pong ball had rolled into during the party before people picked it up and kept throwing it into cups of drinks. It was Mary Joe’s blood.
After everything was over, Tyler took a long hot shower. Then he stood in front of the bathroom mirror and began laughing hysterically at his own reflection. Michael was completely shaken by what he had just heard. Everything Tyler had told him sounded so horrifying that it was almost impossible to believe. He went pale and stood there in genuine shock, trying to figure out whether this was some twisted joke or a terrifying reality.
Despite everything, Michael then asked Tyler to take a picture with him. By that point, he believed he was most likely seeing his childhood friend for the last time. He had a feeling that after everything Tyler had confessed, neither of their lives would ever be the same again. Not long after that, Michael left the party.
It was around 4:00 in the morning. Dawn was beginning to break outside, but the atmosphere inside the house was just as chaotic as it had been hours earlier. Despite everything that had happened, Tyler’s party was still going full speed. Even after confessing to Michael, he kept drinking, laughing, and partying with complete strangers [music] as if nothing unusual had happened.
People continued coming and going, and the music never stopped. Even that late at night, more than 50 people were still inside [music] the house, most of them completely unaware of what had happened there only a few hours earlier. At 4:40 that morning, Tyler made one more Facebook post. Party at my house.
Hit me up. But that post didn’t stay relevant for long. Just 2 minutes later, police stormed the house and the party that had seemed completely ordinary to everyone there came to an instant end. Michael had called the Crimestoppers tip line and told them everything he had heard and seen that night in full detail.
His report was taken seriously immediately. The information he gave the operator pointed to a possible violent homicide, leaving no time to waste. Officers were dispatched to the house within minutes. Several patrol cars arrived to verify the report and find out what had actually happened. Two officers entered the house with their weapons drawn and ordered Tyler to put his hands up immediately.
They moved with extreme caution because they had no idea whether he still posed an immediate threat or whether anyone else inside the house was in danger. Tyler appeared nervous, spoke incoherently, and was visibly agitated. [music] His behavior was erratic, and his answers were disjointed and made little sense.
His pupils were severely dilated. To the officers, it was another alarming sign. It was obvious that Tyler was under the influence of drugs, [music] which could explain both his unstable condition and his bizarre behavior during the arrest. After Tyler was handcuffed in the driveway, the officers headed toward the master bedroom.
According to Michael, that was where his parents would be. At that exact moment, Tyler suddenly shouted, “No, stop. You can’t go in there.” The officers ignored him. Without wasting a second, they grabbed the door handle, forced the door open, and went inside. What they found immediately confirmed [music] their worst fears. Inside were the bodies of Blake and Mary Joe Hadley.
Both had been brutally beaten to death. The scene before them showed unmistakable signs of an exceptionally violent attack and left little doubt about the scale of the tragedy. Everything matched exactly what Michael had described. The details he had given police before they entered the house lined up perfectly with what investigators found inside.
It took detectives many hours to process the crime scene. They carefully documented every detail, photographed each room, collected physical evidence, and worked step by step to reconstruct exactly what had happened. That painstaking examination became one of the most important parts of the investigation. During their search of the house, [music] investigators also found numerous prescription medication bottles issued to Tyler.
Every one of them was documented and added to the case file. They later became another important aspect of both the investigation [music] and the trial. Among the medications were hydroxyazine, satalopramg, prozac, aderall, hormone medications, and several others. Together, they showed that Tyler had been undergoing treatment with multiple prescription drugs over an extended period of time.
The morning after the party, news of the double homicide and Tyler’s arrest spread through Port St. Lucy almost instantly. Word traveled quickly and residents struggled to believe that such a horrific crime had happened in their own community. Eventually, the news reached Ryan. In a single night, his entire life had changed forever.
He hadn’t just lost both of his parents. He had lost his brother as well. Because after everything that had happened, there was no way his family could ever be whole again. the person he had known his entire life was now facing life in prison for murdering their parents. Investigators also determined that on the night of the murders, Tyler stopped at an ATM and withdrew more than $5,000 in cash using his parents’ bank card.
That became another piece of the timeline detectives were able to reconstruct. Tyler’s friends later told investigators that long before the murders, he had repeatedly fantasized about killing his parents. According to them, he had talked about throwing a huge party afterward while their bodies remained inside the house.
At the time, no one took those comments seriously. Everyone assumed it was nothing more than dark humor, disturbing fantasies, or the reckless talk of a teenager. No one imagined those horrifying statements would one day become reality. On March 20th, 2014, a Florida court found Tyler guilty of murdering both of his parents.
After a lengthy trial, the jury concluded that the evidence proved his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. That verdict brought the legal proceedings in one of the community’s most shocking murder cases to a close. Tyler was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, meaning he would never return to life outside prison.
The court could not impose the death penalty because Tyler was only 17 years old when the murders were committed and US law did not allow a death sentence for offenders who were under 18 at the time of the crime. As a result, life imprisonment was the harshest sentence available, meaning Tyler would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
What Tyler did to his parents was unquestionably horrific. The brutality of the crime shocked even experienced investigators and left a lasting impression on everyone who followed the case. Even after the verdict, however, questions about his mental health were never fully answered during the trial. Debate over the role his mental illnesses, years of treatment, and overall psychological condition may have played continued long after the case was over.
That is one reason this case still raises not only horror, but difficult questions that remain without clear answers. Tyler was first prescribed Lexapro when he was only 10 years old. That marked the beginning of years of medication with his treatment plan changing repeatedly as new prescriptions were added over time.
Lexapro is an SSRI anti-depressant that affects neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly serotonin, which plays an important role in regulating mood, emotions, and anxiety. Over the years, additional SSRI medications were prescribed along with stimulants and even hormone treatments. His medication regimen became increasingly complex as doctors tried to address the different problems that emerged throughout his life. But that wasn’t the end of it.
Alcohol, ecstasy, and other psychoactive substances eventually became part of the picture [music] as well. That combination only made everything more complicated and placed even greater strain on his body. As a result, his brain was exposed to a wide range of medications and substances from a very young age.
And that exposure continued to build throughout much of his adolescence. Then in the middle of his teenage years, what many people familiar with the case have described as a complete psychological breakdown appeared to occur. Many point to that period as the moment when his behavior became [music] even more disturbing and unpredictable.
At the same time, regardless of the reasons or possible explanations, many people believe the conclusion remains the same. Anyone capable of murdering their own parents should remain behind bars. In one of the letters Tyler wrote to a friend, he included words that later drew particular attention from investigators.
The letter became another piece of evidence that helped shed [music] light on his behavior and state of mind after the murders of his parents. because of what it contained. The letter was referenced repeatedly throughout the investigation and during the trial. Tyler [music] wrote, “I’m sorry for everything I’ve done. I swear it was the drugs.
I was just living the life of a normal 17-year-old kid and then suddenly I found myself in the St. Lucy County Jail. I’ve ruined so many people’s lives and I can’t forgive myself. I cry all the time because of the guilt. The devil took hold of me. I talked to him and he talked back to me. That’s why I seemed so crazy in the end.
However, Tyler did not always show remorse for what he had done. Just a few weeks after the brutal murders of his parents, one of the inmates came forward with disturbing information. According to him, Tyler behaved as though he didn’t fully grasp the severity of his actions and had even adopted a chilling nickname.
The inmate claimed that Tyler referred to himself as Hammer Boy, a nickname that was allegedly a direct reference to the weapon used in the murders. That account only deepened investigators concerns and stood in stark contrast to any signs of genuine remorse. Perhaps one of the most haunting details of this case is an image of Blake Hadley on Google Maps.
He was accidentally captured by a Google Street View camera just 2 months before he was brutally murdered by his own son. At the time, no one could have imagined that what seemed like an ordinary photograph would one day take on such a chilling and symbolic meaning. Even today, that image can still be found in the Google Map Street View archive.
It has become a frozen moment in time from the final months of Blake Hadley’s life. A quiet snapshot preserved long before the tragedy. Now viewed through a completely different lens. Historical street view imagery can remain available in the archive when earlier panoramas have been preserved for a particular location.
