A brutal and deliberate attack. For one local couple, their dream of building a life in Daytona turned into a living nightmare. And we see all the commotion of the cars coming down. So I just said come down.

Taking the win BY HALF OF BIKE LENGTH OVER Sha Dylan Kelly. Welcome to Bike Week 2022. Bike Week in March of 2022 began just like so many years before it with roaring motorcycles, live music, and sunny Florida skies. But in the early hours of Sunday, March 6th, a young couple made a horrifying discovery on a quiet residential street just minutes away from the crowds and celebrations on Main Street.
Found two people possibly dead. Either one of them are moving. There’s a puddle of blood. Daytona Beach police were called to the intersection of Riverview Boulevard and Wild Olive Avenue where they found the bodies of a man and a woman partially lying on the sidewalk. Nearby, two bicycles had been abandoned.
here. Okay, let’s not walk all the way. Okay. Okay. Okay. But somebody check their closest, please. Here. I got Hang on. Listen. I need Go that way. Go that way. I need Riverview shut off where I’m at. I need Riverview at A1A shut down, please. Did you Did you guys see what happened? Okay, if do you mind just stay right there? Paramedics arrived shortly after the first officers, but there was nothing they could do.
Both victims were already dead, and at that point, their identities had not yet been confirmed. The crime scene stretched from the bicycles on the sidewalk several yards ahead, ending at the front lawn of a nearby home. The man was lying face down while the woman was on her back in the grass beside the sidewalk. Their personal belongings were scattered across the area, a purse, a pair of glasses.
Near the bicycles, [music] first responders also noticed a large clump of hair. There’s hair here. At first, [music] investigators couldn’t tell exactly what had caused their deaths. It may have been a traffic [music] accident, or it may have been a brutal attack. Blood was everywhere. Detectives believe the trail leading from the sidewalk to where the victims were found suggested they had been dragged there after the attack.
Listen, there there’s no Look, don’t walk. Come here. Come out. Get out of that. Get out of it. This isn’t a crash. This This was not a a strike, okay? So, let’s not stand in every in all of this. They They were drugged over there. They were both drugged over there. Yeah.
But did they get hit in the roadway? No. Yeah. This isn’t a car crash. You don’t think so? No, their bicycles are not struck by a car. I’m sorry. I mean, I would be shocked if this ends up being the crash. I’ll put it back. Thank you. As detectives arrived at the scene, the evidence slowly began to paint a clearer picture of what had happened.
Carefully approaching the victims, officers examined everything they could make out in the darkness, looking for any detail that might explain the horrifying scene before them. I need somebody to knock on that door and get them to shut their sprinklers off. I need doors knocked on to find the cameras. And I need this I need this shut down.
I need a car right where the set’s standing. All right. Thanks, Go get the patrol car, wrap it around the fire truck, and bring it over here. What? Both of their necks are slick. Fantastic. Echo 20 reading. They want to put a blanket on her. It’s dark as over here. The less we do, the less the less we do.
That’s why anything. Nobody All of EMS can go. Their necks are slit. Their necks are slit. So, give me a second to contain it before y’all walk up in there. Please. Thank you. Thank you. No witnesses go anywhere. Understood? No one goes anywhere until C speaks to them. A small group of witnesses had gathered near the scene, and officers instructed everyone to stay in case someone had noticed something that could help the investigation.
No one had actually seen the attack happen. Most of the people there had come across the couple at nearly the same time, approaching from different directions. At first, everyone assumed it was just two intoxicated people making their way home after a night of drinking. Weird. I mean, honestly, you come up on a situation like that and you see that, you’re not going to That’s that shit’s weird, right? Right.
As soon as I seen the I was like I’m off. Right. Did they Were they moving at all? No. Okay. Did Did So, I’m going to assume they didn’t say anything. No. We all the um the dispatcher asked him if they were talking or breathing. And she said, “Can you try?” And I said, “Don’t you dare get any closer.
” I said, “This you can’t.” Like, I didn’t see bodies yet. And then I walked by and then I looked over and I was seeing them and it was like it looks like it looks like they’re drunk [ __ ] up. And then that’s when my girlfriend was like I think that’s and after that what made you what made you think that they were up like messed up or whatever when you first because everybody gets up on so I figured they were just passed out.
Where are you guys staying at tonight? Hard Rock Cafe. What brings you guys down here? We just left the pizza joint. We were down on the main street and we went to the pizza. We got a can of the pizza joint. We were walking up to the hotel after eating. Uhhuh. And we tell Pipsy man and we see all the commotion the cars coming down.
So just said come down for us. We don’t see this where we’re from. [laughter] Where you guys from? Uh New Flame. Oh okay. Okay. We only see this on TV. Yeah. With bike week bringing massive crowds into the streets well into the night, it seemed almost impossible that no one had witnessed the attack or even seen [music] the person responsible.
The assault likely lasted only moments before the attacker disappeared back into the crowd. Detectives began going door to door along the street, hoping at least one home security camera had captured something that could help identify the killer. The 735 has cameras. They’re checking. They’re talking to them right now.
We checked here. They have a ring. They’re working with them. We don’t have anything over there. We’re going to go check over there. That’s a ring camera. How far up did you go for cameras? This guy has nothing of value. This guy here might have something. No, he said his his Wi-Fi doesn’t work, so his camera came for us.
That’s it. That’s all we got. There were surveillance cameras on nearly every house [music] along Wild Olive. However, only some of them were actually working and only a few were positioned at an angle that captured the roadway. Motion like it shows motion, but he has to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
So he had to take him down and then reconnect and then but he does have motion on it on these two sides, but he just can’t look at it now. Obviously, as the investigation continued, the Daytona Beach police chief addressed the public later that day. He assured the community that investigators would do everything in their power to identify the killer and bring them to justice.
Both residents and visitors were shaken by the brutality of the crime, raising serious concerns about the safety of Daytona Beach after dark. By that afternoon, police had identified the victims. They were 48-year-old Terry Alman, known to everyone as Van and his 55-year-old wife, Brenda. Just 6 months earlier, the couple had purchased their dream home in Daytona Beach.
According to their friends and family, it was something they had worked toward for years. They love taking walks to the beach, often ending their evenings by watching the sunset over the ocean. By all accounts, they were an incredibly happy couple. Brenda, the mother of a daughter named Sarah, was a creative, hard-working woman with a sharp sense of humor that everyone loved.
Friends and co-workers, described Van as one of the kindest people you could ever hope to meet. He was one of the best people you could ever know, one of the best human beings you could ever meet. Terry was a supervisor at the Amazon warehouse in Deltona. His co-workers creating this memorial saying he had a lasting impact on each of their lives.
He’s just a person that even when it’s something bad, you would know. You definitely wouldn’t know because it’s is Yes. Yes. He’ll help anybody. It’s a bright spot for everybody’s day. Yes. So, it was just sad that he had to go out like that. On Saturday, March 5th, the couple spent the evening enjoying the bike week festivities on Main Street.
At around 10:30 that night, Brenda shared a photo on Facebook of the two of them enjoying the evening together. Even though home wasn’t far away, after having a few drinks, they decided to walk their bicycles back instead of riding them. When they were found dead at around 2:00 the following morning, the Altman’s were almost home.
They were less than a mile away. Later that same day, detectives reviewed surveillance footage that would become a major breakthrough in the case. At 9 minutes past midnight, one camera captured a man walking east along the south side of Seabbze Boulevard near Grand View Avenue. The next recording came from a camera much closer to the crime scene.
A private home security camera on North Wild Olive Avenue showed the same man slowly walking south along the very street where the murders would soon take place. Just 2 minutes later, that same camera recorded Brenda and Van walking their bicycles north toward home. Roughly 20 seconds after the Altman’s passed by, the suspicious man suddenly picked up his pace and headed in the same direction.
The change was impossible to ignore. He was now walking much faster than he had been just moments earlier. Almost as if he were intentionally trying to catch up with the couple. At around 1:15 in the morning, another camera captured the man again. This time he was walking south, leaving the neighborhood roughly 15 minutes after he had followed the Altman’s.
Investigators [music] concluded that the brutal attack had taken place shortly after 1:00 that morning. The victim’s bodies were discovered about 45 minutes later. By tracing the man’s route into a nearby commercial area, detectives collected additional surveillance footage that clearly showed his clothing, his face, and several distinctive tattoos.
The images were immediately released to the public and authorities announced a reward of $50,000 for information leading to the suspect’s arrest. [music] We obviously know we’re looking for a black male, a black male who’s very stocky. He’s in shape. We’re trying to focus [music] on specific tattoos. We believe they were followed.
Based on what we’re looking at, they were followed. 2 days after the murders, a waitress from Johnny Rockets on Seabbze Boulevard contacted police. She told investigators that on March 5th, a man matching the suspect’s description had eaten at the restaurant that evening. He paid with a bank card and signed the receipt using the initials JM.
Using the payment information, detectives [music] were able to identify him as 32-year-old Gene Robert McKinnon. Gene was unemployed and lived in Orlando with his stepfather and brother. Investigators also confirmed that he had purchased a bus ticket to Daytona Beach and arrived there the day before the murders.
The very next morning, he boarded a bus and returned to Orlando. Still cannot confirm our suspect’s name or our person of interest name, but as we get more surveillance uh footage, we’re pushing all of that out to you. I think this is probably one of the mo most vicious attacks that I’ve seen in my 20 years.
It’s it’s extremely disturbing because it’s completely senseless. Usually we can provide a nexus or a motive, but for this one right now, we cannot. Police located Gene at his home in Orlando and took him into custody while detectives searched the apartment. He was still wearing the same distinctive hat he had been seen wearing in Daytona Beach.
During the arrest, Gene remained calm as he spoke with the detectives. He asked very few questions and appeared remarkably composed. Sensing his relaxed demeanor, the detectives kept the conversation casual, at times even flattering him, hoping to build enough rapport to help during the upcoming interview. They learned that Gene had been born in Haiti.
He told them he had moved to Florida as a child more than 22 years earlier. Gene also shared that his mother had died from COVID just 6 months before. The detectives responded with sympathy and kept the conversation going, encouraging him to continue talking consistently in the gym, like eating healthy and everything in the gym, but you know, because I don’t have any transportation, so I always walk, right? So, I just and I kept doing the walking with the workout.
Yeah. Continue what I’m doing. So, Oh, yeah. That’s where it’s at, man. It’s like I can tell like you, you know, you’re like a bigger guy, like you’re a muscular guy. I’m small. Small guy. Your arms, man. They’re bigger than my arms are. I know. He got bananas. [laughter] Fair enough. He got bananas.
You I think you’re being a little modest, but I I got you. I got you. What’s your favorite John Wayne movie? The Good, the Bad. My Man, that’s my favorite, too. Oh. Jean McKinnon had no known connection to either Van or Brenda Alman. He also had no ties to Daytona Beach. His criminal record was minimal, [music] consisting only of minor drugrelated offenses.
There was no history of violent behavior. Detectives considered whether the tattoos on his arms might be linked to a gang, but they found no evidence to support that theory. One tattoo in particular, the number 1804 on the back of his right hand, was an exact match to the tattoo visible on the man captured by surveillance cameras in Daytona Beach.
At that point, there was no doubt that Gene McKinnon was the man who had followed the Altman’s as they made their way home. But one question still remained unanswered. Why? Just unusually calm, so not sure yet. Not entirely sure. Um, some strange details. This was This was probably the probably the strangest one I’ve ever seen. Very, very weird.
So, we’re going to put him in the car. Yeah, perfect. Yeah. Give him a little air conditioning, too, and keep him nice and relaxed. Yeah, he’s pretty calm, so he’s pooping for Coke with us, but he’s Yeah. Um, the Who do you live here with? My stepdad. My dad. Your dad? Who else? And my brother. What’s your brother’s name? Uh, Jean McKeen.
Okay. All right. Um, how long have you guys lived here for? Uh, probably like a year, probably going on a year. Gotcha. Gotcha. Um, have you always lived with your brother? Yeah. Is he Um, do you have any idea why we’re here at all? I the gym just texted us about homicide. Who did the gym? That was the job I work at.
They text you about a homicide? Yeah. They said if you see this client if you see this person then I was like this is my brother. And it was like wow. I was like I was like wow. Okay. I know have like some gang tattoos on his arm. Like you ever involved in any kind of gang? No.
He just has that because when we were growing up because you know how they used to be like you know the growing up stuff but he never been no gangster stuff like you know. No he’s not that. He he acts like, you know, when we’re growing up, we think we somebody, but we’re not. He know. Yeah. Jean’s brother explained that the family had been going through an incredibly difficult time since [music] their mother’s death.
He was stunned to learn that Gan had become the prime suspect in a murder investigation [music] and said he couldn’t believe his brother was capable of something like this. Got in any kind of fights before, anything like that or like is he um does he ever carry around any kind of weapons or anything? Well, yeah.
when he he I be seeing him carry a little dagger just to protect him so when he walking down the street he rides his bike. Gotcha. Okay. What kind of like when you say a dagger like what do you mean? I don’t know. Like little swords I guess. I don’t know. Like a little one. How big do you think it is? I don’t know how big it is.
I’m just saying like I guess like I know he be yo you carrying weapons with you like you know protect yourself in the streets because you riding at night with your bike at night and stuff. Oh yeah absolutely. No, it can be dangerous especially around here. So does he do you think he’s got like a like some kind of likeal issues? Does he probably? Okay.
Like does he ever like like growing up did he ever was he ever like violent or anything? Angry at all or he was probably angry at my him and my mom always getting arguments but he was never angry at people. People like him. Okay. Yeah. He seems like pretty likable guy. He was kind of soft spoken and everything. So that’s why I’m like damn.
So do you think that he would be capable of committing like I seen snap bro? I seen I told you I’ve been watching those little weird I don’t know anybody capable anything but you’ve seen him snap before though. No, never to the kill anybody like No, no, we never go that far. We fight each other and then ya ya ya, you know.
Yeah, that’s it. We forgive each other and move on. Okay, make sure that’s safe. All right, fair enough. When detectives searched the apartment, they found it in complete disarray. Jean’s bedroom was especially cluttered. Among his belongings, investigators found clothing that matched what he had been wearing in Daytona along with several knives.
Detectives believed one of those knives was likely the murder weapon. We’re going to get you out here soon, man. You doing all right? You sure? You look a little stressed out. I mean, rightfully so. But I’ll just look at my brother seeing me. Here is this. You don’t like that? No, I got you. I wouldn’t want to.
I wouldn’t want my brother seeing me in the situation either. Um, so do you have any idea why the Daytona Beach Police Department would want to come and talk to you? Okay. Have you left Orlando in the past few days at all? Past few days? I was at a beach on Sunday. Where? Where? Out on the beach? They told me. Okay. All right.
So, you went out to the beach on Sunday. Um, do you know what you did there? Do you remember where you went or anything? No, just the beach. Just the beach and nowhere else. So, you went to the beach with your cousins and everything or you said who was it? Your cousin. Okay. So, from there you went to the beach and where did you guys stay out there in a hotel or anything? No, I think we went straight back to town.
So, Okay. Gotcha. So, did you go anywhere else other than the beach? So, when you drove into town, you went straight to the beach and then and then you went straight on. Yeah. Just like the whole day like my whole family didn’t just go to the beach. Okay. So, did you go did you go walking around ever by yourself at all? No. Never by yourself.
What if I told you that I know that you didn’t just go to the beach? We know you didn’t just go to the beach. Okay. We We have proof that you didn’t go to the beach. Okay. And you need to come out and eat honestly because right now you’re lying and you’re back yourself into a corner.
You see what I’m saying? We know that you need to go to the beach. We know you went other places other than the beach. Okay. Then detectives showed Gene a photograph taken near the crime scene that night. From that moment on, he didn’t say another word. That’s you. We know where you are. Listen, man. Got to be honest with you, okay? So, unfortunately, there are still a lot of unanswered questions and some of the details I’m just not going to be able to go into at this time as the investigation continues.
Brenda’s daughter, Sarah, would like to say a few words at this time. So, I’m going to step aside and and let Sarah come up. Um, I didn’t prepare um to say anything because this is a nightmare that I never expected could ever happen. This isn’t real. It doesn’t feel real and I don’t think it will ever feel real.
[music] Um I lost my best friend. [snorts] My mother was the most amazing, caring, giving, loving, selfless person in the world. [snorts] And to top it off, she was as funny as could be and so was her husband. They were both wonderful and happy and [snorts] loving and they didn’t deserve what happened to them. And I just want to thank every single one of you.
When Jean was brought back to Daytona for questioning, the detectives tried [music] to maintain the sense of trust and rapport they had built during their earlier conversations in Orlando. What’s your favorite food, man? What’s your favorite food? I don’t have a favorite. You don’t have You don’t like me? Is Mexican food your favorite? Italian food? International? International food? I’m not picking.
No. No. No. Jean was willing to talk, but for the first two hours of the interview, he insisted that he couldn’t remember anything about that night. He kept bringing up his mother. He also repeatedly told detectives that he had consumed a large amount of Haitian whiskey that evening. I just went on a vacation.
Okay. But did someone try to attack you while you were there? Did somebody mess with you? Did they bother you? Did they come at you? Did you have to defend yourself? What was it? You don’t know. What was it, Jean? I don’t know exactly. You’re saying you don’t remember? Okay. I think you do. Okay.
I’m telling the truth. That’s all I could remember. That’s all I could remember. Because I know when I know losing a mother, I don’t know how it feels to lose a mother. You feel me? I just I lost mine and I get it. I get it. We talked about that and I understand just as the interview went on, Jean slowly began to recall scattered pieces of his trip to Daytona.
He remembered going to the beach on Sunday morning after the Altman’s had been killed. He also told detectives that he woke up that morning feeling as though he had come out of a trance covered in blood with absolutely no memory of what had happened the night before. Do you think that Do you think that’s you? Do you Is that you? Yes, of course it is.
Where’s Where’s your pants and and boots at that you got rid of? Where are they? Cuz you woke up with them. That’s what I’m saying. Where are they? Where are they? I don’t know. Did it when you woke up from this trance, did you realize that you had blood all over you? No, I just woke up. What did you What did you do? What What What did you think when you had all this blood on your pants? No, no, no. For real.
I just like I It’s like you just woke up. I just woke up. You just see what you have on you and just find out where you at and you just make a call. Where did you You said you didn’t stay anywhere. I didn’t. I know. You made a phone call. Yeah. What was the person’s name that you called? Daff. Daff. And who’s Daff to you? That’s my cousin.
Is that a female or male? That’s a female. About an hour into the interrogation, Jean was left alone in the room. Oh my goodness Lord. What did I do, man? What you think? What did I do? Can you explain what did I do, bro? What did I do? Gradually, Jean’s memory began to come back.
He recalled passing the Altman’s on the street. According to him, he was drunk, exhausted, [music] and under extreme stress. He said it felt like some kind of unexplained force had pulled him after them. It’s It’s a depressant. Alcohol is a depressant. It makes you It changes your mood sometimes for the worse. It was like this like they passed by.
Mhm. After it passed by, it’s like I already I was like gone like I was I was tired like Right. And then I knew you saw me pause. Right. That’s why that’s why I like something something something is pulling you. I moved through that box to the whole thing. Yeah. So, I guess I was very stressing from from everything from your whole life.
Did you maybe hit him first and then once he fell down then you started attacking her or do you think that um did you push him? Did you hit him? Did you maybe maybe you maybe you started attacking him first? Do you remember how he fell? I was trying to Okay. So, he was So, he kind of stumbled and fell down.
Um, was he saying anything when this was happening or was she saying anything? Gradually, as Jean relaxed more during the conversation with the detective, he even began to joke and smile in response to some of the questions. His laughter felt unsettlingly out of place given the subject of the interview because at that very moment he was essentially admitting to the senseless and brutal murder of Van and Brenda Alman.
Did you uh did you tell Daff what happened or have you told anybody what happened up until now? Yeah. She said beach. I said, “Okay.” Yeah. Oh, so she showed up and then she said, “Hey, let’s go to the beach.” And then you guys went to the beach right down here. [laughter] All right, turn up.
Mr. Massan, is there anything you’d like to say? Anything you want to say to the couple’s daughter? I apologize. You apologize? Did the couple say anything to you? Throughout 2023, Gene Robert McKeen underwent a series of psychiatric evaluations to determine whether he was fit to stand trial.
In February, he was found mentally incompetent to participate in legal proceedings and was involuntarily committed to a state psychiatric hospital. He was examined by multiple specialists. The defense presented brain scan results and experts stated that they showed signs of significant traumatic damage that could have affected his emotions, memory, and thinking.
Gene claimed that he experienced both auditory and visual hallucinations along with severe disturbances in his thought processes. He also stated that he had been physically and emotionally abused as a child by his mother, who was already deceased by that time. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia, sometimes with manic episodes, post-traumatic stress disorder, and the long-term effects of childhood psychological trauma.
So, Mr. Keane has symptoms of a thought disorder that includes thought disorganization, confusion, and also auditory hallucinations, visual hallucinations that qualify him for schizophrenia. So, schizophrenia spectrum disorder. [snorts] In addition, he has symptoms of mood instability. In November of 2023, state psychologists stated that Gene may have been exaggerating his mental condition.
In their assessment, he was likely overstating his symptoms and intentionally creating the impression that his psychological disorders were far more severe than they actually were. As a result, the prosecution announced its intention to seek the death penalty. It was around this time that he was finally found competent to stand trial.
In May of 2025, Gene McKeen entered a no contest plea to two counts of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. My best friend, uh my my creator, my mother, the one who the one person in the world who had unconditional love for me was ripped away from me.
And um [clears throat] nothing will ever fix it and justice will never really truly be served because her nor can be brought back and that’s not fair. We’ve all suffered so much. After the hearing concluded, one of Brenda’s brothers [music] spoke with local reporters. He thanked law enforcement for their work and said he felt a sense of relief that the case had finally come to [music] an end.
Ideally, we would have wanted a guilty plea and and we would have wanted a death penalty. [music] But, um, you know, as long as this animal’s off the street, you know, and it doesn’t happen again, I mean, I think that you got to take your wins where you get your wins. I hope he makes a lot of friends in prison. That’s all I have to say.
