Dale Musselman knew that in 1984 when he circled the number on the extension lab report.

He knew it in 1992 when he stood at the shed door and looked at the stacked pumps. He knew it when Ronnie Fitch laughed at him on the phone and he said quietly, “I understand.” He knew it the way that men know things when they have been watching carefully for a very long time and writing down what they see. Some things don’t become scrap just because someone decides they’re not worth fixing.

Sometimes they just wait in a shed for 15 years until the right man comes along with a bearing puller and a graph paper drawn and enough patience to find out what they were always capable of.
