Vietnam’s Rifles HORRIFYING Experience by US Soldiers

Listen closely to the war in Vietnam, and you don’t just hear one gun. You hear a chaotic symphony of death. You hear the heavy thud of the American M14, the high velocity zip of the M16, and the distinct bone chilling pop of the SKS and AK-47. The jungle was flooded with an arsenal that ranged from cuttingedge prototypes to rusty carbines from a generation ago.

American GIS, the Vietkong, the NVA, and our allies all brought their own iron to the fight. But specs on a paper don’t matter when you’re waste deep in a rice patty. We are stripping away the nostalgia to expose the documented reality of these weapons. We’re going to show you the strengths that saved squads and the fatal flaws that cost lives.

 The M14 entered service in 1957 as America’s standard battle rifle. It fired the 7.62x 51 mm NATO round, held 20 rounds in a detachable box magazine, and could fire semi-automatic or fully automatic. On paper, the M14 was a solid design. In Vietnam’s jungles, it was completely wrong for the mission.

 The weight was the first problem. At 9.2 2 lb empty, 11 lb loaded. The M14 was heavy to carry through jungle in rice patties. Add ammunition, water, rations, and equipment, and soldiers were carrying 60 to 80 lb total. The full power 7.62 mm NATO cartridge was designed for European warfare at ranges of 300 to 800 m. Vietnam’s jungle fighting happened at ranges measured in feet, not hundreds of meters.

 The M14’s power and range advantages meant nothing when you couldn’t see past 30 ft through vegetation. The automatic fire capability was nearly useless. The powerful cartridge produced severe recoil. In full auto mode, the M14 climbed violently, sending rounds high after the first shot. Controllable automatic fire was impossible for most soldiers.

 The 20 round magazine capacity seemed adequate, but compared poorly to what came later. Soldiers carried 6 to eight magazines, typically 120 to 160 rounds, total weight of approximately 8 to 10 lb. The length was awkward in jungle at 44 in. Overall, the M14 caught on vegetation, was difficult to maneuver in thick growth, and felt unwieldy in the confined spaces where much Vietnam combat occurred.

 Early Vietnam soldiers issued M14s described the weapon as beating them up physically during long patrols. The weight exhausted them, the length frustrated them, the power was wasted on close-range targets. But the M14 had one quality that later made soldiers wish they’d kept them. It was absolutely reliable. The design was essentially an improved M1 Garand.

 The operating system was proven through decades of use. The rifle functioned in terrible conditions without the catastrophic failures that plagued its replacement. By 1967 1968, most M14s had been replaced by M16s in infantry units. Some remained with designated marksmen who valued the rifle’s accuracy and power at longer ranges.

 Others stayed in rear echelon units or with support personnel. The M16 replaced the M14 starting in 1965. The new rifle weighed 6.4 lb empty versus the M14’s 9.2 lb. It fired a smaller 5.56x 45 mm round that allowed soldiers to carry more ammunition. 300 rounds of 5.56 mm weighed about the same as 120 rounds of 7.62 mm.

 The early M16 in Vietnam became one of the biggest equipment failures in military history. The problems were systematic. Ballpowder ammunition that fouled the gas system. Lack of chrome chamber plating causing extraction failures. No cleaning equipment because the rifle was marketed as self-cleaning. Malfunction rates in some units reached 25 to 40% during firefights.

 Marines were found dead with cleaning rods stuck down barrels killed while trying to clear jammed rifles. Congressional investigations in 1967 exposed the disaster. Fixes began rolling out. chrome chambers, cleaning kits, better ammunition, proper maintenance training. By 1968 to 1969, the improved M16A1 was performing reliably.

 The rifle that had killed soldiers through malfunction became a trusted weapon. The lightweight, controllable automatic fire and high capacity made it ideal for jungle combat once reliability issues were resolved. Soldiers who served in early years versus late war had completely different M16 experiences. Early adopters fought the rifle as much as the enemy.

 Later soldiers carried reliable weapons that functioned properly. The M16’s eventual success doesn’t erase the early failures. Hundreds or thousands of Americans died because their rifles jammed when they needed to fire. That betrayal shaped how an entire generation of veterans viewed the weapon. The Vietkong and NVA carried primarily AK-47 pattern rifles, Soviet manufactured AK-47s, Chinese type 56 copies, and small numbers from other communist countries.

 The AK-47 fired a 7.62x 39 mm intermediate cartridge. Less powerful than the M14’s round, more powerful than the M16s. The standard magazine held 30 rounds. The rifle could fire semi-automatic or fully automatic. The legendary reliability of the AK-47 was real, not propaganda. The loose tolerances that made it less accurate than American rifles also made it nearly impossible to jam.

 Soldiers could drag it through mud, submerge it in water, leave it unclean for weeks, and it would still fire. In Vietnam’s environment where weapons were constantly exposed to mud, water, and humidity, this reliability was decisive. The AK-47 worked when it needed to work. American soldiers who captured and carried AK-47s, which happened frequently during 1966 to 1968 when M16s were failing, universally praised the enemy rifle’s reliability, even while criticizing its accuracy and crude manufacturer.

 The effective range of approximately 300 m was adequate for Vietnam’s typical engagement distances. The heavier 7.62x 62x 39 mm bullet penetrated vegetation better than the M16’s lighter round, an advantage in jungle fighting. The full auto fire was controllable enough for short bursts, though sustained automatic fire climbed like all assault rifles.

The muzzle brake helped manage recoil somewhat. The distinctive AK-47 sound, a sharp crack different from American rifles became the soundtrack of Vietnam combat. American soldiers learned to recognize that sound instantly and react accordingly. The Soviet Simonov SKS carbine appeared throughout Vietnam, particularly early in the war among Vietkong forces before AK-47s were available in large numbers.

 The SKS was a semi-automatic only rifle firing the same 7.62x 39 mm round as the AK-47. It loaded from 10 round stripper clips into a fixed internal magazine. The longer 20.5 in barrel provided better accuracy than the AK-47 at medium ranges. Soldiers using captured SKS carbines noted the weapon was capable of precise fire at 200 to 300 m when properly zeroed.

 The semi-automatic only operation forced controlled fire. Without full auto capability, shooters couldn’t waste ammunition on uncontrolled bursts. The fixed magazine meant slower reloading than the AK-47’s detachable magazines, but also meant one less component to lose or break. Reliability was excellent, though not quite matching the AK-47’s legendary status.

 Most SKS carbines had permanently attached folding spike bayonets. Some American soldiers who captured them used the bayonets as utility knives or prying tools. As AK-47s became more available to communist forces, the SKS became less common in frontline units. Village militia and rear area forces continued using them throughout the war.

 The M1 Garand saw limited use in Vietnam, primarily with South Vietnamese forces and some American advisers early in the conflict. The semi-automatic 3006 rifle had been America’s standard from World War II through Korea. By Vietnam, it was obsolete, but still in inventory. The eight round onblock clip loading system was the Garand’s distinctive feature and biggest limitation.

 When the last round fired, the empty clip ejected with a distinctive ping sound that potentially alerted enemies the rifle was empty. Reloading required inserting a full eight round clip. Partial reloads meant ejecting unfired rounds with the clip, wasting ammunition. The weight, 9.5 lb empty, was similar to the M14. The 306 cartridge was even more powerful than the M14’s 7.

62 mm NATO round, creating severe recoil and being completely excessive for jungle combat. The Garand was reliable and accurate, qualities from an earlier era of rifle design. But in Vietnam’s context, it was too heavy, too powerful, held too few rounds, and was too slow to reload. Most Garands in Vietnam went to South Vietnamese forces.

American advisers who carried them typically did so because M14s weren’t available, not by choice. The M1 carbine and its selective fire variant, the M2 carbine, saw extensive use with South Vietnamese forces and limited American use. The 30 carbine cartridge was essentially a pistol round in a rifle-sized weapon.

 The 110 grain bullet had minimal stopping power and poor penetration through vegetation. The carbine’s lightweight, 5.5 lb, made it easy to carry. The 15 or 30 round magazines provided decent capacity, but the anemic cartridge performance was a critical weakness. Multiple documented accounts describe enemy soldiers being hit multiple times with 30 carbine rounds and continuing to fight.

 The light bullet lacked the energy to reliably incapacitate opponents. The effective range was limited to approximately 200 m maximum. realistically much less in jungle. Beyond 100 meters, the cartridges effectiveness dropped dramatically. The M2’s full auto capability somewhat compensated for the weak cartridge by allowing multiple rapid hits, but this quickly exhausted the magazine capacity.

American support troops, vehicle crews, and others issued M1 or M2 carbines generally disliked them and acquired rifles or other weapons when possible. The carbines were simply inadequate for combat against enemy forces carrying AK-47s. South Vietnamese forces equipped with carbines were significantly outgunned by Vietkong with AKs.

 This firepower disparity contributed to ARVN tactical difficulties. Beyond the standard M16, various AR-15 family variants appeared in Vietnam serving specialized roles. The CAR 15 was a shortened variant with collapsible stock and short barrel. Officially designated XM177E1 and later XM177E2. Soldiers called them CAR 15s.

 The compact size made them popular with vehicle crews, helicopter pilots, special operations forces, and others who needed rifle capability in confined spaces. The short 10-in or 11.5 in barrel reduced muzzle velocity and increased muzzle blast and flash. The moderator/ flash suppressor helped somewhat, but the CAR15 was loud and bright when firing.

 Reliability issues mirrored the standard M16’s problems initially, but the CAR 15’s shorter gas system sometimes created different malfunction patterns. Once the ammunition and reliability improvements were implemented, CAR 15s functioned well. Allied forces brought their own rifles to Vietnam, creating a mix of weapons across the battlefield.

Australian forces carried the L1A1 self-loading rifle, the British Commonwealth variant of the FNAL. This 7.62* 51 mm NATO rifle was semi-automatic only, heavier than the M16, but extremely reliable. Australian soldiers praised the L1A1’s robust construction and reliability. The weapon functioned flawlessly in jungle conditions.

 The semi-autown only operation was actually preferred by Australian doctrine emphasizing accurate fire over volume.
