To even get to the food, a man reached for the smallest and most beloved tool of the war, the P-38, a folding can opener barely an inch and a half long that soldiers wore on their dog tag chain and called with the usual affection the John Wayne.
With it, he opened the little olive drab cans of a C ration, the meat unit, the fruit, the crackers, and tin cheese, the coffee and cocoa and sugar in their paper packets. And then, he went looking for heat. The classic field stove was itself an improvisation. So, the grunt needed heat that was fast, hot, and nearly smokeless. He needed something better than what he’d been issued, and he was already carrying it.
Because the infantryman in Vietnam humped explosives as a matter of routine. C4, composition C4, was the standard American plastic explosive of the war, and it was everywhere. It was in demolition charges for blowing bunkers, trees, and obstacles. It was packed inside the M18 Claymore mine, the command-detonated anti-personnel weapon that studded every night defensive perimeter.
A single Claymore held around a pound and a half of C4 behind its curved face of steel balls. Demolition charges came as blocks. The M112, a stick of C4 a little over a pound, sheathed in Mylar you could slit open with a knife. The stuff had the consistency of firm modeling clay. You could mold it, cut it, pinch a corner off with your fingers.
A man carrying demolition material, or one who had broken down a claymore, had a steady supply of offcuts and end pieces. And a scrap too small to bother with for a charge, was exactly the right size to boil a cup of water. Nothing went to waste. The leftovers of the war’s demolitions became its breakfast. A soldier could get his hands on a piece of C4 as easily as almost anything in his kit.
And it turned out that this brick of high explosive was also, when you understood it, a nearly perfect cooking fuel. To see why, you have to understand the single most important fact about C4. That is the explosion, the thing that levels a bunker. And here is the crucial part. C4 will not detonate from a flame. It is chemically stable, deliberately engineered that way so that soldiers could carry it into the chaos of combat without it going off from a stray spark or a bullet or a drop. To make C4 detonate, you have to hit it with a shockwave of its own.
And that’s the job of a blasting cap, a small initiator that produces exactly the sharp, violent shock needed to trip the explosive over from burning into detonating. No blasting cap, no shockwave, no explosion. Just fire. This stability was not an accident. It was the entire design goal. Soldiers needed to trust an explosive with their lives in the worst conditions imaginable.
Dropped, dragged, soaked, shot at without it going off by surprise. So, C4 was engineered to be almost contemptuously safe to handle. You could throw it, drop it, run it over with a truck. As a rule, a bullet fired into it will not set it off. It will sit in a fire and burn without detonating because without that initiating shock, it simply has no mechanism to.
It is one of the safest things in a soldier’s kit right up until the instant a blasting cap tells it to become one of the most dangerous. That gap between how it behaves with a flame and how it behaves with a shock is the entire margin the cooking trick lived inside. That’s the secret. That’s the entire reason a sane man could set light to a piece of high explosive and calmly hold his breakfast over it.
He wasn’t gambling. He was relying on the physics. C4 lit with a match is a stove. C4 hit with a blasting cap is a bomb. They are two different events and the grunt who cooked with it understood, in his hands if not in these words, exactly which one he was starting. And as a stove it was superb. A piece of C4 the size of a marble or a walnut torn off and lit burned with a fierce concentrated heat that could bring a canteen cup of water to a boil in a minute or two far faster and hotter than the trioxane tab it replaced. It was light.
The man was carrying it anyway. It left almost no smoke signature compared to a wood fire. It didn’t need a fire ring or dry tinder or any of the things the jungle refused to provide during the monsoon. You could heat a meal with it in the bottom of a foxhole in the rain where a heat tab left you waiting and blowing on a lukewarm cup a lump of C4 got the job done before your hands went cold.
A hard clean roaring little heat with none of the trioxane’s greasy smoke or chemical aftertaste. Men who had both within reach took the C4 nearly every time. The heat tab was what you fell back on when there was genuinely nothing else. For the specific problem of a fast hot low signature cook in the field nothing in the entire American supply system beat a pinch of the explosive the man already had on his back.
None of this was in a manual. No supply sergeant issued C4 as cooking fuel, and no officer stood up and taught it. It moved the way all real field knowledge moved. A new man watched an old hand tear a piece off a block, raised an eyebrow, and got a short, firm explanation, and one iron rule. Within a day, he was doing it himself.
