Why the M79 Was the Most Feared Weapon in the Jungle 

 

 

In the jungles of Vietnam, American soldiers faced a problem that no rifle could solve. The enemy was dug into bunkers, hidden behind paddy dikes, concealed in tree lines that absorb bullets like a sponge. But, there was one weapon that could reach them. A weapon so effective, soldiers called it the platoon leader’s artillery.

 A weapon that could lob explosives over obstacles, through jungle canopy, and into enemy positions that rifles couldn’t touch. This is the story of the M79 and why it became the most feared weapon in the jungle. To understand why the M79 mattered, you have to understand a problem that had plagued American infantry since World War II.

A soldier could throw a hand grenade about 30 to 40 m. Beyond that, the next option was a 60-mm mortar. But, mortars had a minimum range of about 300 m. That left a massive gap in the middle where the infantry had almost nothing. The military tried rifle grenades, but they were slow to load, painfully inaccurate, and the recoil was brutal.

In the heat of combat, they simply weren’t practical. After analyzing nearly 600 combat reports from World War II and Korea, the army confirmed what soldiers already knew. They needed something new. In 1952, the army launched Project Niblick with one goal: fill the dead zone. The breakthrough came from an unlikely source.

Engineers at Picatinny Arsenal adapted a propulsion system originally developed by Nazi Germany during World War II. The concept was elegant. A small high-pressure chamber would ignite the propellant at 35,000 PSI, then vent into a larger low-pressure chamber that reduced it to just 3,000 PSI.

 The result was a grenade that could be launched from the shoulder without breaking the soldier’s collarbone. On December 15th, 1960, the Army officially adopted the weapon as the M79. First deliveries arrived in 1961. By the time American combat troops hit the ground in Vietnam in 1965, the M79 was ready. The M79 looked like someone had taken a sawed-off shotgun and given it a massive bore.

It was deceptively simple, consisting of just five major parts: receiver, fore-end, barrel, sight assembly, and stock. At just 6 lb unloaded and 29 in long, it was compact enough to carry through the jungle. The break-action design meant a soldier could reload in seconds. Flip it open, drop in a round, snap it shut, aim, fire.

 The standard round was the M406 high explosive. When it hit, it fragmented into over 300 pieces of shrapnel traveling at over 1,500 m per second. The lethal radius was 5 m. Anyone within that circle was not walking away. But the M79 wasn’t just about explosives. The military developed an entire family of 40-mm rounds. There was buckshot for close range, essentially turning the launcher into a massive shotgun.

Illumination rounds that lit up the night sky for 40 seconds, smoke rounds in multiple colors for signaling, and CS tear gas for flushing enemies out of tunnels and bunkers. The sighting system was straightforward, a fixed blade up front and a folding ladder sight in the rear adjustable from 75 to 375 m in 25 m increments.

 But most experienced grenadiers didn’t bother with the sights. They learned to fire by instinct, a technique soldiers called Kentucky windage. Point, adjust for range, fire. Veterans could hit targets at 200 m without ever looking through the sights. A skilled grenadier could put five to seven aimed rounds down range every minute.

 Each one capable of clearing a bunker or breaking up an ambush. When American combat divisions arrived in Vietnam in 1965, the M79 went with them. The First Cavalry Division, the First Infantry Division, the 101st Airborne, the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Each rifle squad had two grenadiers, one per fire team. The grenadier held a unique position.

He carried the most powerful weapon in the squad, but he was also the most vulnerable. His only backup was a .45 caliber pistol, no rifle. If his grenades ran out, he was essentially defenseless. In open terrain like rice paddies, the M79 was devastating. The grenadier could engage targets at the weapon’s full range, lobbing rounds into tree lines and behind dikes where riflemen couldn’t reach.

That arcing trajectory was the key. While bullets traveled in a relatively flat line, the M79’s grenades could be lobbed up and over obstacles. Paddy berms, bunker walls, even the jungle canopy itself. But the jungle changed everything. In dense vegetation, engagement distances collapsed. Suddenly, soldiers were fighting at 20 m, 15 m, sometimes closer.

And the M79 had a critical limitation. The grenade had to travel approximately 30 m before the fuse armed itself. Anything closer, and the round wouldn’t explode. It would just hit the target like a slow-moving projectile. One veteran from the 327th Infantry described an ambush where the enemy was just 20 ft away.

 He said, “I could see that all I was doing was knocking them down. I heard no explosions, so I laid the M79 down and pulled out the .45.” This wasn’t a design flaw. It was a safety feature to prevent the grenadier from killing himself at close range. But in the jungle, it forced soldiers to adapt.

 That’s where the M576 buckshot round came in. No arming distance required, it turned the M79 into a massive shotgun, spraying 20 to 27 metal pellets at nearly 270 m per second. Special operations units took adaptation even further. Operators in MACV-SOG, the military’s clandestine cross-border unit, sawed down the barrel and stock of their M79s, creating compact pistol versions they could carry alongside their rifles.

To understand what it was like to carry the M79 in combat, consider the story of Rocky Bleier. Before he won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Blier was a specialist for Grenadier with Company C, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment. He arrived in Vietnam in May 1969. On August 20th, his company was crossing a rice paddy near Hiep Duc when an NVA machine gun opened fire.

Blier did what he was trained to do. Uh saw movement across the burn. And he hollered “Scoop gook.” All of a sudden some shots break the stillness and he starts moving and chasing um the NVA that that he saw. Pulling everybody out and and into this open rice paddy. And as he did all of a sudden the machine gun started to you could hear it popping, leveling the area.

 Guys were diving left and right into the rice paddies. Um and so as I hit the rice paddy, it went down, crawled to the end of that rice paddy. Uh found another one lying below us. There were four guys who were pinned down in that rice paddy. I did see the machine gun nestled up in that burn, maybe 75 m away, maybe 100 m away. Well, my responsibility was to be able to get some firepower on that position uh as quickly as I possibly can.

 I rolled over my side, I breached the grenade within my launcher. And as I went to fire all of a sudden bam, I get hit for the first time. Um I feel this thud in my leg. And so I discharged my round and uh um a medic was behind me. He threw me a band-aid, it wrapped it around my leg, got behind some protection.

 So, we got enough firepower um onto that position um so that the four guys who were pinned down, they got out of where they were. Um and so uh so we were in this this firefight that took place. While firing his M79, Blier was hit by a rifle round in his left thigh. Moments later, an enemy grenade exploded near his feet, sending shrapnel into his right leg and foot.

Of the 33 soldiers in his unit that day, 25 were wounded and four were killed. Doctors told him he would never play football again. They were wrong, but the shrapnel from that day stayed with him, a permanent reminder of his 3 months as a grenadier in the jungle. Stories like Blier’s played out across Vietnam.

The M79 saw action in every major engagement of the war. In the Ia Drang Valley in 1965, grenadiers helped repel waves of North Vietnamese attackers. During the Tet Offensive in 1968, they defended besieged firebases and urban positions across South Vietnam. On December 29th, 1968, Private First Class David Paul Nash of the 9th Infantry Division was the first to return fire during an ambush, using his M79 to lay down a rapid series of rounds that allowed his unit to call in artillery support.

When an enemy grenade landed near his wounded comrades, Nash threw himself on it. He was 20 years old. He received the Medal of Honor. Units developed sophisticated tactics around the weapon. The 25th Infantry Division documented an ambush technique where one grenadier would fire an illumination round behind the enemy kill zone, silhouetting fleeing targets, while a second grenadier dropped high explosive rounds directly into the kill zone.

Combined with M60 machine guns and M16 rifles, it was devastating. By the time production ended in 1971, manufacturers had delivered approximately 350,000 M79 grenade launchers for US service alone. The enemy recognized its value, too. Photographic evidence shows Viet Cong fighters displaying captured M79s among their prized weapons.

They had nothing comparable. Their organic fire support consisted of heavier, more cumbersome weapons that couldn’t match the 6-lb M79 in the close confines of the jungle. By 1969, the army began fielding the M203, an under-barrel launcher that mounted directly to the M16 rifle. It solved the grenadier’s biggest vulnerability.

He finally had a rifle. But the M203 came with trade-offs. Its shorter barrel meant reduced accuracy and effective range, 150 m versus the M79’s 350. Veterans and special forces operators consistently noted the difference. That’s why the M79 never fully disappeared. Navy SEALs and Army special forces continued using them into the 2000s in Iraq and Afghanistan.

When accuracy mattered more than adding having a rifle attached, operators reached for the original. The M79 was never designed to be a permanent solution. It was supposed to be a stopgap until something better came along. Instead, it became one of the most effective infantry weapons of the Vietnam War. For the soldiers who carried it through rice paddies and jungle trails, the thumper, the blooper, the bloop tube, it was 6 lb of firepower that could change the outcome of a firefight.
