There is a tablet that was not supposed to survive. It was buried under 17 ft of collapsed mud brick in the ruins of a temple complex outside the ancient city of Nippur in what is now southern Iraq. The archaeologists who found it in 2019 initially logged it as administrative debris, a fragment too scorched and too broken to be worth immediate attention.

>> [music] >> It sat in a storage tray in a climate-controlled facility in Baghdad for 2 years before a philologist named Dr. Hayder al-Mutairi noticed something wrong with the cuneiform. The signs were older than they should have been. Older than the temple, older than the city itself.

 And what they described, when the translation finally came together in the spring of 2022, was not a grain inventory or a temple dedication or a king list. It was a description of what the human being looked like before Enki touched us. Before the decision was made to change us. Before whatever happened in that laboratory beneath the Earth, in the place the ancient texts call the Abzu, was done to the creatures that would eventually become you and me.

The name Enki appears in Sumerian literature more often than almost any other deity. And the Sumerians were not casual about their gods. They were a people who built the first cities, who invented writing, who kept astronomical records of extraordinary precision, who developed legal codes and medical texts and mathematical systems that still baffle historians when they consider how early they emerged.

These were not primitive people telling campfire stories. When the Sumerians wrote about Enki, they wrote about him with the specificity of engineers describing a colleague. He had a house. He had a workshop. He had tools. He had materials. He had a problem he was trying to solve. And the problem was labor. >> [music] >> And the solution he arrived at involved taking something that already existed [music] and modifying it until it could work.

That framing labor problem, [music] existing creature, deliberate modification is not mythology. That is a project brief. And the burned tablet from Nippur, which scholars have now formally designated as the Nippur Genetic Fragment or NGF 7 in the preliminary academic literature, appears to be describing the starting conditions of that project.

What the raw material looked like before the work began. The text is damaged. Significant portions of the left column are gone entirely, burned away or dissolved by ground water over 4,000 years of burial. What remains is approximately 60% of the original inscription. And even that 60% required 18 months of infrared spectroscopy and multi-spectral imaging to recover legibly.

Dr. Al-Mutairi worked with a team of three other specialists, including a computational linguist from the University of Copenhagen, and a material scientist from MIT who had developed new techniques for recovering text from vitrified clay. Clay that has been partially melted by extreme heat and then resolidified into a hard glassy mass.

 The tablet had been in a fire, a very intense fire, the kind of fire that destroys cities. The kind of fire that in 2200 BCE southern Mesopotamia was probably not an accident. The preliminary translation was circulated privately among a small group of Sumerian scholars in late 2022. It became public in fragments, the way these things always do, through a paper in the Journal of Cuneiform Studies that described the tablet’s physical composition and dating without fully translating its content and then through a longer article in a German academic

journal that translated several passages but contextualized them so heavily within conventional Sumerian literary tradition that most readers would not have understood what they were actually reading. It was not until an independent researcher named Marcus Webb posted a detailed breakdown on his academic blog in early 2023 that the implications began to circulate more widely.

 Webb’s post was shared hundreds of thousands of times. The original journals were not. The Atrahasis epic is one of the oldest complete narratives we possess. It was written down in its most complete surviving form around 1700 BCE, >> [music] >> but the story it tells is described within the text itself as being far older, as recording events that happened before the flood, in the time when the gods did everything themselves.

The core premise of the Atrahasis is this. The younger gods, the Igigi, were required to dig the canals and work the fields and perform the physical labor of maintaining the world. After a very long time, they went on strike. They burned their tools. They surrounded the palace of Enlil, the head god, and refused to continue.

The strike is described with a level of political specificity, [music] demands, grievances, collective action that reads less like divine mythology and more like the earliest recorded labor dispute. [music] Enlil called a council. The council included Enki, who was the god of wisdom, of fresh water, of the deep earth, of craftsmanship, and of something the text called me, a word that scholars translate variously as divine laws, cosmic principles, or more literally, the knowledge of how things work.

At the council, Enki proposed a solution. He said, in fairly direct translation, “Let us create a being who will bear the yoke. Let us create a primitive worker who will take on the burden.” And then he described the process. He went to his workshop beneath the earth, to the Abzu, and he used existing biological material to create what the text calls the Lulu, which translates as the mixed [music] one, or the one who was combined.

 That word combined has never been adequately explained by scholars working within the conventional framework. Combined from what? Mixed from what? What were the components? The standard scholarly answer is to treat the word as poetic, as an expression of the hybrid nature of humanity, part divine and part earthly, which is certainly how the text frames it on a theological level.

But theology and mechanism are different things. The text is not only making a theological claim, it is also making a claim about procedure. The NGF on seven tablet appears to be the document that answers those questions. The surviving portion of the text describes, in technical language that the translation team describes as unusually precise for a literary text of this period, the characteristics of the creature that existed before Enki’s intervention.

The creature that was selected as the base material for the Lulu project. The text calls this creature the Adamu in one passage and uses a longer phrase, which translates roughly as the upright ones of the plains in another. It describes them as bipedal. It describes them as using tools, specifically flint tools.

 It describes them as communicating with sounds, uh but not with the full system that the text associates with the gods. And then it does something that no other Sumerian text we have ever found does. It describes their reproductive biology, not metaphorically, physically. In terms that the translation team describes as surprisingly clinical in register.

The creatures reproduce slowly. That is the primary complaint logged in the surviving text, voiced in the words attributed to Enki himself as he examines the material he has to work with. They produce offspring rarely. The interval between generations is too long. >> [music] >> Their numbers cannot scale to meet the labor requirement.

 And so the modification he proposes, and which other fragments of Sumerian literature describe him implementing, is specifically targeted at reproductive capacity and cognitive function. He is not building from scratch. He is optimizing an existing system. He is a genetic engineer looking at a genome and deciding which parameters to adjust.

There is a passage in NGF 7 that has no parallel anywhere in the existing Sumerian corpus. It describes in the surviving lines what the translation team calls a behavioral inventory, a list of characteristics of the pre-modification creature that go beyond physical description. The Adamu, according to this passage, did not accumulate objects beyond immediate need.

 They did not construct permanent dwellings. [music] They did not maintain social hierarchies of more than a certain size, >> [music] >> a number that the translation renders as approximately 20 to 30 individuals. And crucially, the text describes them as not reaching toward the sky. Not in context a poetic expression. In context, given what surrounds it, this reads as a behavioral description.

They did not look up. They did not orient themselves vertically in the way that the gods, and by implication the modified beings, the Lulu, eventually would. The ambition to build upward, to elevate, to construct towers, is framed in this text as a modification. As something introduced. As something the original creature did not have.

The being described in NGF7 before the modification matches [music] with uncomfortable precision the physical profile of Homo Heidelbergensis, the archaic human species that preceded both Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans. Homo Heidelbergensis was bipedal. Homo Heidelbergensis used flint tools. The archaeological record suggests they had some form of communication, but lacked the full vocal anatomy associated with complex language.

They lived in small bands. They built temporary shelters. They did not create permanent architecture. And their reproductive rate, based on what paleoanthropologists have reconstructed from population genetics models, was significantly lower than that of anatomically modern humans, a species optimized for survival in a stable environment, a species that would be catastrophically inadequate for large-scale organized labor.

This is not a connection that the NGF7 translation team makes explicitly in their academic papers. It is a connection that becomes visible when you read those papers alongside the existing paleoanthropological literature. When you place the Sumerian clinical description next to the biological profile reconstructed by modern science and ask yourself how a tablet buried in southern Iraq 4,000 years ago was describing a creature whose characteristics we only fully understood through DNA analysis and fossil evidence

assembled in the 20th and 21st centuries. There are several possible explanations. The first is coincidence, which becomes harder to sustain the more specific the correspondences become. The second is that the Sumerians had access to observational records passed down from earlier periods of human prehistory. Records that contained accurate descriptions of earlier human populations.

The third is the one that this channel exists to take seriously. And that mainstream scholarship exists to avoid taking seriously. That the source of the information in these tablets was direct. That whoever wrote this description had seen what they were describing. That the Anunnaki, or whatever we choose to call them, were real, were present, [music] and kept records.

The question of Anunnaki reality is one that academic institutions handle in a specific way. The standard position is that the Anunnaki are Mesopotamian gods, which is true in the sense that the Sumerians worshiped them. >> [music] >> But which side steps the more fundamental question of what the Sumerians believed they were worshiping.

The Sumerians [music] did not describe the Anunnaki the way the Greeks described Zeus in vague cosmic terms as a being of pure divine essence inhabiting a metaphysical realm. They described the Anunnaki the way you describe a boss. They had ranks. They had job titles. They had a chain of command that generated conflict and required resolution through councils and negotiations.

They had a home planet which the text called Nibiru. Whose orbital period they calculated with the same precision they brought to their calculations of Jupiter and Saturn. They had vehicles the text describe in ways that generations of translators rendered as chariots, but which the original Sumerian word, when examined carefully, means something closer to celestial vessel.

Zecharia Sitchin spent 30 years arguing that the Sumerian texts were meant to be read literally. And that doing so produced a coherent picture of an extraterrestrial civilization that had intervened in human evolution. Mainstream scholars have spent an equivalent amount of energy arguing that Sitchin was wrong, that his translations were inaccurate, that he imposed modern concepts onto ancient texts.

Some of those criticisms are fair. Sitchin was not a trained Assyriologist, and some of his specific translations are genuinely contestable. But the fact that a popularizer made errors does not settle the underlying question of what the text actually describe. It only muddies the water in ways that are convenient for people who do not want the question properly examined.

NGF7 is not a Sitchin text. >> [music] >> It was not found by an ancient astronaut theorist. It was found by a conventional archaeological survey team, analyzed by credentialed scholars using peer-reviewed methodologies, and published in peer-reviewed journals. And what it says is specific, testable, and strange.

 The imaging technology that made NGF7 legible is worth a moment. Multispectral imaging photographs a surface under multiple wavelengths of light, including wavelengths invisible to the naked eye. Surface irregularities invisible in ordinary light become sharply defined under near-infrared wavelengths. The cuneiform impressions on NGF7 had been partially filled in by mineral deposits over 4,000 years, and the fire damage had created a surface that appeared almost featureless in visible light.

Under multispectral imaging, the signs emerge clearly enough to work from. The technique has since been applied to other tablets in the same collection, >> [music] >> and preliminary results suggest several pieces previously considered unreadable may contain recoverable text. What else is sitting in those storage trays? The cognitive changes described in NGF7 are also more specific than they first appear.

The text describes the modification as producing beings who can hold more in the mind at once, rendered by the translation team as expanded [music] working capacity. In modern terms, that is a description of working memory, the resource that makes symbolic language possible. That makes planning possible. That makes organized labor at scale possible.

The modification targeted exactly the right system. The section of the tablet that has generated the most academic controversy involves a passage in which Enki, or a speaker using language associated with Enki in other texts, describes a specific technical procedure. The passage is damaged. Three of the seven lines in this section are partially or fully illegible.

But what can be read involves a description of something being taken from the gods and introduced into the creature. The word used is a compound term that combines the sign for blood or essence with the sign for the gods and the sign for a vessel or container. The translation team rendered this as divine essence transferred through medium, which is appropriately cautious for a scholarly publication.

An independent researcher translated it as godly genetic material inserted via mechanism. The distinction between those two translations is the distinction between a metaphor and a description of a procedure. And that distinction is the entire argument. In other Sumerian texts, the creation of humans involves blood.

 Specifically, it involves the blood of a god who is killed for the purpose, mixed with clay, used to form the first humans. This has been interpreted for over a century as purely mythological, but NGF7 complicates that interpretation because NGF7 is not using symbolic language. It’s grammatical structures and vocabulary choices mark it as a technical document rather than a literary or religious one.

It is using the same kind of language that Sumerian agricultural texts used to describe hybridization of crops or that medical texts used to describe the preparation of treatments from biological ingredients. When a Sumerian agricultural text tells you to take pollen from one date palm and introduce it into the flowers of another to produce a specific type of fruit, it is not speaking metaphorically.

It is describing a real procedure. When NGF 7 uses structurally similar language to describe taking something from one biological source and introducing it into another to produce a different kind of being, the linguistic parallel is exact. The clay in the creation stories has also been re-examined by researchers who approach the Sumerian texts with a background in molecular biology.

The Sumerian word usually translated as clay, t e i t, or one of its variants, is the same word used in medical texts to describe certain biological cultures or preparations. There’s an argument circulating in specialist circles that the clay in these creation narratives is not geological clay, but a medium used to grow or cultivate biological material.

A substrate, a growth medium. What we would today call a culture medium in a laboratory context. This recontextualization does not prove anything by itself, but it is a reading that the physical evidence from NGF 7 supports better than the conventional reading does. Because NGF 7 in the passages that can be read is not describing a sculptor shaping figures from mud.

 It is describing a technical process with inputs, a procedure, and outputs. The beings described before Enki’s modification in NGF 7 have a lifespan the tablet addresses directly. The upright ones of the planes are described as long-lived. [music] The modification is described as having the effect, among other effects, of shortening the lifespan.

The Lulu, the modified being, does not live as long as its progenitors, but it reproduces faster and thinks more quickly in certain ways. And those tradeoffs are described as intentional, as designed, as the specific outcome of the engineering process. The text does not present the shortened lifespan of the Lulu as a flaw or an accident.

 It presents it as a feature, a deliberate reduction in longevity in exchange for increased reproductive speed and cognitive acceleration, which is exactly the kind of tradeoff a practical engineer would make if the goal was rapid population scaling for a labor pool. That detail maps onto something that appears across multiple ancient traditions in ways that comparative religion scholars acknowledge without following to its logical conclusion.

In the Hebrew Bible, the figures before the flood live for hundreds of years. Adam lives for 930 years. Methuselah lives for 969 years. After the flood, lifespans drop sharply and continue contracting through the generations until they reach the biblical norm of 70 years. Most scholars read this as a mythological motif expressing the distance of ancient figures from the divine origin.

But if you read it alongside N G F 7, it looks like something different. It looks like a record of a biological parameter being tracked over generations. A lifespan that started long and was engineered down, continuing to decline through populations who are modified at different times or to different degrees.

The Vedic tradition has its own version. The Yugas, the great cosmic ages of Hindu cosmology, describe a progressive shortening of human lifespan across enormous time scales from the Satya Yuga in which humans live for 100,000 years to the Kali Yuga, our current age, in which 100 years is the outer limit. The mechanism is not described in purely biological terms in the Sanskrit text, but the pattern is the same.

Deliberate reduction in longevity as a feature of the current human condition rather than an accident of natural aging. Three separate ancient traditions arising in different parts of the world, in different languages, in different cultural contexts, describing the same phenomenon. Either the most persistent coincidence in the history of storytelling or a memory, a memory of something that was done to us.

The site where the tablet was found is itself significant. Nippur was the religious center of Sumer, the city described in the text as the navel of the world. And beneath its temples, archaeologists have been digging since the late 19th century without reaching the bottom. The site is so deep, so densely stratified, that generations of excavations have barely scratched its history.

The tablet that Al-Mutairi’s team found came from a layer dated to approximately 2200 BCE, but the tablet’s linguistic archaisms suggest it is a copy of a much older text. The original composition could date to anywhere between 3700 and 2700 BCE, the very beginning of writing, the very beginning of cities.

 Whatever knowledge was encoded in NGF 7 was being written down at the same moment that writing itself was being invented, which [music] raises the possibility that writing was partly invented in order to preserve exactly this kind of knowledge. That the first purpose of the written word was to record what had been done to us before we forgot it entirely.

The conventional timeline of human development says that our species evolved from earlier primates over millions of years, developed language and culture gradually, built the first cities around 5,000 years ago, >> [music] >> and has been advancing in a roughly linear progression ever since. It is a story with no room for intervention.

 A story in which human beings are entirely the product of natural selection and geological time. But that timeline has been accumulating anomalies for decades. Göbekli Tepe was built 12,000 years ago by people who should not have been capable of building it, and then deliberately buried by those same people for reasons we cannot explain.

The precision stonework at the core of predynastic Egyptian monuments exceeds what the tools of the period should have been able to produce. The Antikythera mechanism is a computing device of extraordinary sophistication recovered from a ship that sank 2,000 years ago, implying a tradition of mechanical engineering that left almost no other trace.

These anomalies do not individually prove intervention, but they accumulate. They cluster. They suggest that the trajectory of human cognitive and technical development was not as linear as the conventional model requires. NGF7 is a tablet buried in the ground for 4,000 years. It is damaged and incomplete.

 Its translation is contested. No reasonable person should treat it as definitive, but no honest person should pretend that it is not asking a question that deserves a serious answer. The question it is asking is, if someone modified us, what did we look like before they did? And the answer it provides, in Sumerian cuneiform inscribed by a hand that has been dust for 4,000 years, is specific enough, and strange enough, and consistent enough with what we have learned through entirely separate scientific means, that the comfortable

dismissal is no longer quite as comfortable as it used to be. The full translation has not yet been published. Dr. Sediyr Al-Mutairi’s team has indicated that a complete academic publication is expected within the next 2 years, pending additional imaging work on the most damaged sections. The tablet is currently in the Iraq Museum in Baghdad >> [music] >> in a temperature and humidity-controlled case.

You cannot go and look at it. You are dependent, as you always are with these things, >> [music] >> on the scholars and the institutions that control access to the physical object and its interpretation. Who gets to translate these tablets? Who decides which translations are authoritative? Who determines which readings are dismissed as fringe? The history of how inconvenient findings get managed within academic institutions is long.

 But the story for this video is simpler and stranger than any of [music] that. It is the story of a tablet that burned but did not disappear. That survived a fire and a collapse and 4,000 years underground >> [music] >> and 2 years in a storage tray and the slow machinery of academic publication. And that is now telling us what we were before someone decided to change us.
