  On the evening of Sunday, June 28, 2015, Teresa’s flight landed at Southwest Florida International Airport at approximately 9:30 p.m. Since she was alone, she used a ride-hailing service to complete the journey to her residence. One of the men was identified as Curtis Wayne Wright Jr. The discovery caused immediate surprise.  Wght was no stranger; on the contrary, he had an extremely close relationship with Mark Severs.  The two had been friends since childhood.  They had grown up together in Missouri, shared important moments in life, and kept in touch over the years.

During the trip, Wright had made a mistake that would prove crucial to the investigation.

Initially, no one understood how this had happened.  After analyzing the equipment and technical records, investigators concluded that Wghtia had received instructions on how to use a master code to disable the alarm before Teresa arrived.

According to his testimony, the hammers were chosen because they produce less noise than a firearm, reducing the chances that neighbors would notice the attack.  After the murder, the pair even tried to create the impression that the residence had been the target of a robbery.

  Some objects were moved from their places. Certain belongings were rummaged through and a door was forced open with a crowbar to simulate a break-in. The intention was to convince the police that Teresa had been the victim of a crime committed by strangers, but the plan began to fall apart shortly afterwards.

  According to the investigation, after returning from the crime scene, Jimmy Ray Rogers discussed his involvement with his girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time.  In addition to the confession, he asked her to get rid of the clothes she wore during the murder. However, she made a decision that would change the course of the investigation.

  Instead of destroying the evidence, he decided to cooperate with the authorities. The woman led investigators to the location where the clothes had been discarded.  The experts recovered the materials and carried out the necessary examinations. This physical evidence significantly strengthened the case against Rogers, directly linking him to the execution of the murder.

  With the progress of the investigations and the body of evidence gathered, the time has come to bring those involved to court.  The first to be tried was Jimmy Ray Rogers.  In October 2019, he faced a jury.  During the trial, his ex-girlfriend’s testimony had a huge impact on the jurors, especially because of how she described Rogers’ confession and the location of the evidence she handed over to the police.

  Prosecutors sought his conviction for first-degree murder.  At the end of the deliberations, however, the jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and also of conspiracy to commit murder.  As a result, Jimmy Ray Rogers was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole and began serving his sentence in a prison in the state of Florida.

After years of gathering evidence, analyzing clues, and reconstructing every step of the crime’s planning, Mark Severs was finally brought to trial.  According to the prosecution, he did not wield the hammer that killed Teresa, but he was responsible for planning the entire operation that culminated in her death.

  During the court sessions, the jurors heard weeks of testimony, expert analysis, and the presentation of a vast amount of evidence, but none of it drew as much attention as the testimony of Curtis Wayne Wright Jr. Already convicted after accepting a plea deal, Wright took the witness stand and described in detail how the plan had been organized.
