This unbelievable story began with a series of strange and frightening messages. And before long, its shocking twists were gripping the entire country. Even the judge who handled the case said he had never seen anything like it in his 30-year career. It sounded like the plot of a twisted thriller.

 But this all happened in real life. And once people learned the truth, no one could believe it. Michelle Hadley was born on December 10th, 1986 in California. She was the oldest child in her family and she had a quiet, calm personality. Michelle was fairly shy and preferred spending most of her time with her loved ones.

 At the same time, she was very driven and took her education seriously. After finishing school, she went to college in Pennsylvania where she earned excellent grades and received a scholarship. After getting her degree in history, Michelle returned to California and married the boyfriend she had been with since high school.

 Over the next few years, she tried working in a few different fields until she eventually landed a position as the manager of the marketing department at an insurance company. So, within just a few years of graduating from college, Michelle had managed to build a solid career, but her personal life wasn’t going nearly as well. About 4 years after the wedding, her marriage fell apart, and Michelle found herself on her own again.

 In the summer of 2013, she decided to sign up for a dating site where she met a man named Ian Diaz. Michelle was 26 at the time, and Ian was 35. He worked as a federal marshall and wanted to start a family. The two of them went out a few times and before long their relationship turned serious. About a year and a half later, Ian proposed and Michelle said yes.

 They were planning to get married in February 2016. And by that point, they had even bought a condo together in Anaheim. But after the engagement, their relationship began to fall apart. And by the end of 2015, they decided to break up. At the beginning of the following year, Ian met a woman named Angela and their relationship moved very quickly.

 Within a month, they were engaged. And just a few weeks after that, Angela told him she was pregnant. So, she and Ian decided to get married as soon as possible. Partly so Angela could get access to Ian’s health insurance. The couple began building a life together and preparing for the baby. But just a few months later, they faced a devastating blow when Angela told Ian she had suffered a miscarriage.

Then only a month after that, she became pregnant again, this time with twins. But even with that happy news, Ian still had one serious problem in front of him. Ever since his breakup with Michelle, the two of them had been locked in a drawn out dispute over the condo they had bought together.

 They had taken out a mortgage on it. And even after the breakup, Michelle was still legally tied to the property. She wanted Ian to either refinance the mortgage in his own name or sell the condo, and she threatened to take him to court if he didn’t. Michelle hired an attorney, and eventually they agreed to give Ian 6 months to resolve the issue.

 Over the next few months, Ian applied with different banks. But there was a problem. With his salary as a federal marshall, no bank was willing to approve him for the mortgage on that property. Then in May, as Michelle’s deadline was coming up, she contacted Ian again. And this time, she sent him a very strange message.

 Along with demanding that he deal with the condo, Michelle wrote, “You told me I was your first love, but you did not treat me like the precious, perfect treasure I am. You have sinned against God, and I want my power back because it belongs to us, the daughters of God.” That message was strange enough on its own, but after that, the situation took a much more frightening turn.

 Angela began receiving messages on social media and by email from an account using the name Jason Ray, almost the same name as her ex. The messages were full of biblical references. The sender told Angela that Ian did not love her, that he was cheating on her, and that she needed to run from him as fast as she could before he hurt her.

 The messages also claimed that Ian’s true love was Michelle. The sender compared Michelle to Lilith and Angela to Eve. Again, using biblical imagery, everything seemed to point to Michelle being behind these disturbing accounts. So, Angela replied to one of the messages, addressed her by name, and asked her to leave her alone.

 But just a few days later, Angela began receiving new emails. This time they were not just strange and filled with biblical references. They included direct threats. The sender wrote that because Angela had ignored all the warnings, she would have to hurt in order to understand the truth about Ian. He was called Satan and a sinner, someone who would inevitably cause her pain.

 After that, the threats became even more specific and more frightening. The sender wrote that Angela needed to watch her back and stop sleeping at night. On top of that, they wrote that the daughters of God would take her baby and hurt it. So, whoever was writing these messages clearly knew Angela was pregnant, which made the whole situation even more disturbing.

 In the emails that followed, the sender wrote that Angela deserved a life full of loneliness and torture. And then came the death threats. The person behind the account also began attaching graphic images of violence against women. Eventually, all of this led Ian and Angela to go to the police.

 On June 1st, they told officers what had been happening, showed them the emails, and shared their suspicion that Ian’s ex Michelle might be behind all of the fake accounts. Ian told police that Michelle had always been emotionally unstable and that as their relationship developed, things only got worse. According to him, she became more and more volatile and unpredictable.

 She often screamed at him, threatened him, and kept bringing up biblical references. In the final months of their relationship, she also began drinking regularly. All of that made him believe Michelle might have serious mental health issues. And just a month after they moved in together, Ian decided to end the relationship.

 But Michelle kept writing to him about the condo while also insulting him and filling her messages with biblical references. In the end, police agreed to issue a restraining order against Michelle. But the very next day, Angela received another email. This time, the sender wrote that they had been watching her and had seen her leaving work.

 So, whoever was sending these messages seemed to know almost everything about Angela, that she was pregnant, where she worked, and even the name of her ex. Over the next few days, the threatening emails kept coming, but before long, the situation escalated to a whole new level. On June 13th, Ian and Angela reported a strange and frightening incident to police.

 An unfamiliar man had shown up at their condo looking for Angela. He explained that he had posted an ad on Craigslist looking for a woman interested in consensual roleplay involving a sexual assault fantasy. He was looking for someone willing to act out that kind of scenario. And before long, he got a response from a woman using Angela’s photos.

 In the messages, the person behind the account claimed she wanted a man to ambush her outside her home while she was walking her dog, follow her back to her apartment, drag her inside, and assault her. It was all supposed to be consensual, but the woman had made one thing very clear. During the entire scene, she would play along by pretending to resist.

 The man who had posted the ad quickly realized something was wrong. He explained the situation to Ian and Angela and then left without incident. Ian went back to the police and told them what had happened, asking to take action against Michelle. He was convinced she was the one behind all of these fake accounts, but the officers still did nothing.

 That went on for about a week until the situation escalated even further. On June 24th, Angela called 911 and reported that she had just been attacked by an unknown man while she was in the garage. According to her, the man lunged at her and started beating her, but Angela screamed and the attacker ran off. Still, he had managed to injure her, and Angela was convinced the attack was connected to the Craigslist posts.

 This time, police took the situation more seriously. Within just a few hours, they obtained a warrant to seize Michelle’s digital devices. Michelle insisted she had nothing to do with any of it, but she still had to hand over her laptop, phone, and iPad. When officers searched Michelle’s devices, they found an email from Craigslist asking her to confirm a post about sexual assault fantasies, and it had been written under Angela’s name, as if Angela herself had placed it.

 So now investigators had a direct link between Michelle and the Craigslist ads. And that same evening, she was arrested for violating the restraining order. Up until that arrest, Angela had continued receiving emails filled with insults and threats. But as soon as Michelle was taken into custody, the messages suddenly stopped.

 The next morning, however, Michelle’s parents posted her $100,000 bond and she was released. Only an hour later, Angela began receiving threatening emails again, along with graphic images of masked people torturing women. New Craigslist ads also started appearing, again written as if Angela herself had posted them, and again involving sexual assault fantasies.

 About 2 weeks after Michelle was released, another incident took place. Ian and Angela called 911 and reported a suspicious man they had seen outside their apartment. When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old boy hiding in the bushes below Angela’s windows. He told them he had seen a Craigslist ad supposedly posted by Angela, saying she was looking for a sexual partner and that they had arranged to meet.

 Angela also gave police the emails she had received after Michelle was released on bond. When officers looked at them, they saw that some had been sent not only from fake accounts, but also from email addresses that belonged to Michelle. Detectives already knew about that address from the time they had confiscated her devices, so they were confident it was hers.

Based on all of that, Michelle was arrested for a second time. This time, the judge raised her bond to $1 million. She was also hit with a much longer list of charges, including attempted sexual assault and assault during an attempted break-in with intent to commit sexual assault.

 Altogether, the charges carried the possibility of life in prison, and Michelle was now facing trial. Since her parents could not come up with a million dollars for bond, she remained in jail while she waited for the case to move forward. But Michelle still insisted she had nothing to do with any of it and that she did not even know who Angela was.

 According to Michelle, back in late May, when the whole situation had first begun, strange messages started showing up in her inbox. Someone was trying to connect her email address to other accounts as a recovery email, and some of those attempts had actually gone through. Michelle reported it to customer support, explaining that she had nothing to do with those email addresses.

 Soon after that, police served her with a restraining order involving Angela. Michelle tried to prove to investigators that she was innocent and that someone was setting her up. She wrote to the local police department, the county sheriff’s office, and even the FBI explaining the whole situation. On June 21st, she also received an email from Craigslist asking her to confirm a post about finding partners for sexual encounters involving simulated sexual assault.

 But Michelle insisted she had never posted anything like that. After Michelle was arrested for the second time, her parents immediately noticed one specific detail. As we remember, Angela began receiving emails almost right after Michelle was released on bond. But there was one major problem with that. All of Michelle’s electronic devices were still in police custody.

 And when the first email came in, Michelle was still sitting outside the police station waiting for her parents to pick her up. Michelle’s father also pointed out that she physically could not have accessed her email from another device because she had two factor authentication turned on and it was tied to her phone, which at that point was still in police custody.

 So, the people close to Michelle had no doubt that someone was trying to frame her. While she was sitting in jail, they hired an attorney and began doing their own investigation because police did not seem especially interested in digging any deeper. After requesting information about all the emails Angela had received, Michelle’s parents began looking at where their daughter had been when each one was sent.

 And beyond the fact that some of the emails had come in while all of Michelle’s devices were confiscated, they found something else. When one of the earliest messages was sent, Michelle had been at college taking an exam where she clearly could not have been using her phone or laptop. Michelle’s attorneys brought all of this information to the judge and asked for her to be released.

 But the judge refused to treat it as reliable evidence because it had been gathered by Michelle’s parents, not by law enforcement. And after that, Michelle’s attorney kept pressuring detectives, demanding that they investigate the case more carefully. And that was when he began uncovering some very unexpected details.

 It turned out police already had several reasons to question whether Michelle was really involved, but for some reason they had simply ignored each one. After Michelle’s second arrest, the lead detective began looking for a connection between her devices and the email addresses that had been sending the messages.

 He quickly realized that none of those accounts had ever been logged into on any of Michelle’s devices. Then the detective sent test emails to those addresses and even received automated replies from them. But once again, none of those accounts appeared to be active anywhere on Michelle’s devices. There was also something strange about the Craigslist email that had actually been sent to Michelle.

 In that message, she was asked to confirm a post about a sexual assault fantasy. And that email was one of the reasons she had been arrested the first time. But nothing in that message showed that the post was actually connected to Michelle herself. More than that, she had never confirmed the post and had immediately reported it to Craigslist support. But even that was not all.

Michelle’s attorney learned that back on June 18th, before her second arrest, police had already tried to trace the IP addresses behind the threatening emails. They found that some of the messages had been sent from the apartment where Ian and Angela lived. as well as from Angela’s father’s house where she sometimes stayed.

 Based on all of this, the district attorney’s office began taking an interest in the case, and in September, they assigned their own investigator to figure out what was really going on. He immediately noticed the obvious inconsistencies and began studying the emails much more carefully. Experts found absolutely no link between Michelle and the messages or the Craigslist ads.

 Instead, they found even more evidence that the emails had been sent from Angela’s own devices. While the investigator was gathering all of this information, something unexpected happened. Ian went to the police himself and shared a pretty interesting story. He said that over the past few weeks, he had started having doubts about whether Angela was telling the truth.

 and he was beginning to believe that his own wife might actually be behind the entire situation. It had started back in August when Ian received a message from one of the same email addresses that had been used to send threats to Angela. But there was one obvious problem with that. When the messages came in, Michelle was behind bars, which meant she physically could not have sent it.

 On top of that, Ian told investigators that Angela had turned out to be a pathological liar. She had lied about working at a courthouse and had even forged paychecks so he wouldn’t suspect anything. At one point, Ian also found bank cards belonging to a man named Daniel. And Angela told him he was just a friend. But Ian later found out that she had been in a relationship with Daniel long before she ever met him and that she had continued secretly seeing Daniel even after the wedding.

 Because all of this, Ian began to question whether Angela was actually pregnant with his child or whether the baby might belong to someone else. But then things became even stranger. As we remember, Angela had said she was pregnant with twins, but Ian found a stock sonogram template online, one where you could type anyone’s personal information.

 He realized Angela may have simply printed out fake ultrasound images and confronted her about it, but she insisted she had not lied about the pregnancy. The very next day, though, Ian found a box of pregnancy tests in the bathroom. Inside the box was also a pin, and on every test, extra lines had been drawn in to make them look positive.

 At that point, Ian understood that his entire marriage had been built on lies and that Angelo really could have staged the whole story with the threats. So, he decided to file for divorce and tell police everything. For detectives, this became the final piece pointing toward Michelle’s innocence. And on October 6th, 2016, they decided to release her from jail.

 By then, she had spent 88 days behind bars, and Michelle later said the experience had been absolute hell. But even after she was released, prosecutors still did not drop the charges. For the next several months, Michelle had to wear a GPS ankle monitor. On top of that, the evidence against Angela was kept quiet.

 So, in the eyes of the public, Michelle was still seen as unstable and dangerous. The story had received a lot of media coverage, and every outlet had portrayed her as a deranged woman who was willing to hurt her ex’s pregnant wife. That continued for several more months until authorities finally arrested Angela.

 3 days later on January 9th, all charges against Michelle were finally dropped and police publicly revealed that she had nothing to do with the threatening messages or the Craigslist posts. As they prepared the case against Angela, investigators spoke with her ex, Jason. He said Angela had introduced herself to him as an attorney, and after they had started dating, she claimed she had been diagnosed with cancer.

 Jason even made changes to the home where he lived with his son, so Angela would be more comfortable there while she was supposedly suffering from the illness and the effects of chemotherapy. Before long, Jason began noticing strange things about her behavior and realized she did not have cancer at all. One of the things that confirmed it for him was that he found the exact same medical images online, the same ones Angela had shown him, as if they were her own.

Eventually, they broke up, but later Angela used his name for one of the fake accounts she used to send threats to herself. Preliminary hearings in Angela’s case began about 6 months after her arrest. She was facing more than 12 years in prison, but she refused to admit guilt. According to prosecutors, Angela had organized the entire fake harassment campaign to ruin the life of her husband’s ex-girlfriend.

 She used eight fake accounts. IP masking tools and different proxy servers to make the messages harder to trace. She also staged the attack that had supposedly been carried out by an unknown man near her home and injured herself to make the story look believable. On top of that, Angela had never actually been pregnant, which became obvious by the time the case moved toward trial.

 In the prosecutor’s view, she had used the fake pregnancy to make police take her reports more seriously. Investigators also found two text documents on her computer where Angela had written out the whole story of threats and harassment. In those documents, she presented herself as the victim and appeared to be planning to sell the rights to the story, taking advantage of all the media attention the case had received.

 The preliminary hearings lasted 2 months, and throughout that time, Angela showed no signs of remorse. If anything, she often seemed relaxed and even smirked in court. But on October 17th, just a few days before the trial was set to begin, Angela decided to take a plea deal. She admitted that she had been behind the emails and the Craigslist posts.

 And in exchange, she received 5 years in prison. So Michelle’s name had finally been cleared. But for her, this was only the beginning. Even after Angela went to prison, Michelle immediately made it clear that she would keep fighting until the full truth came out. She had no doubt that Angela was involved. But all along, Michelle believed Angela was only part of what had happened.

 In her mind, the person truly at the center of it all was one man, Ian. There was a huge amount of evidence against Angela, but prosecutors were never able to give a clear motive for why she would go to such extreme lengths to frame Michelle. The two women did not know each other. Michelle was not a threat to Angela’s marriage to Ian, and on the surface, there seemed to be no obvious reason for Angela to do something so elaborate.

 But according to Michelle, Ian did have a motive. And to her, it was obvious. As we remember, not long before they broke up, Ian and Michelle had bought a condo together. Even though they were not married, both of their names were on the mortgage. On top of that, Michelle was the one who had paid the down payment, which was about $14,000.

After the breakup, Ian stayed in the condo and Michelle moved out. But because her name was on the mortgage, she was still financially tied to it and had to keep making payments. Michelle was obviously not okay with that. So, she hired an attorney and sometime later she reached an agreement. He had 6 months to either refinance the mortgage in his own name or sell the condo so they could split the money.

 The deadline was coming up right around the same time Angela began receiving the threatening messages. So Michelle believed Ian had come up with the entire scheme, the threats, the harassment, and the intimidation, for one purpose, to discredit her, make her look unstable, and possibly get her sent to jail, which would allow him to stay in the condo.

But that was only the tip of the iceberg. Before long, Michelle began speaking publicly about what her relationship with Ian had really been like and why it had ended. When they first met, Ian seemed normal, steady, and reliable. But according to Michelle, that changed very quickly. Day by day, he became more controlling, almost as if he were trying to reshape her life around his own desires.

 He wanted her to dress in more revealing clothes, get piercings, and change different things about herself. He also tried to control where she went and who she talked to. Later, Michelle began to suspect he was tracking her location. Every time she strayed from her usual route between home, school, and work, Ian would call her almost immediately and ask where she was.

 On top of that, he kept pushing her to quit her job, even though Michelle had a very good position at the company where she worked. Ian wanted her to get a job at Disneyland, where he had worked before becoming a federal marshal. Eventually, Michelle gave in to the pressure and agreed. But before long, she realized Ian had two very specific reasons for wanting her there so badly.

 First, he asked his former co-workers to watch her and report back to him if Michelle did anything he considered suspicious, like talking to other men. And second, Ian had often said that Disneyland was his favorite place on Earth. So, in many ways, he simply wanted unlimited access to that world again.

 But the worst part was still ahead. As their relationship continued, Ian began talking more and more often about one of his sexual fantasies. He wanted Michelle to have sex with another man and recorded on video. Michelle flatly refused to do anything like that. But as the months went on, Ian kept pressuring her harder and harder.

 In February 2014, Michelle became seriously ill and had to take strong medication. According to her, Ian took advantage of that situation. He got her to drink alcohol, found a man on Craigslist who agreed to come to their home, then hid in the closet and filmed as the man was having sex with her. Sometime later, when Michelle fully came to herself, she saw what had happened as sexual assault.

 But Ian insisted she had agreed to it and told her she had nothing to worry about. He also promised to delete the videos. But later, Michelle learned that he never had. All of this had a devastating effect on her. Michelle felt like she was on the edge, and she began drinking more often, trying to drown out the memories of what had happened.

 And the situation only got worse because Ian continued to control her more and more. Whenever she pushed back or refused to do what he wanted, he threatened her with the same recordings he had promised to delete. Eventually, Michelle couldn’t take it anymore. One day, while Ian was at work, she fled the condo and went to stay with her parents.

But she still could not cut off contact with him completely because of the mortgage. and she wanted to get her share of the condo before finally removing him from her life for good. So Michelle believed Angela had only been a participant in this huge scheme, while the person who had created it and carried it out was Ian.

 But there were several problems with that theory. During the investigation into Angela, detectives did consider the possibility that Ian may have been directly involved in what was happening, but Ian denied it. He insisted he had not known what Angela was doing and even gave investigators evidence showing that when some of the messages were sent, he had been at work.

 As a result, no charges were filed against him and Ian continued working as a federal marshal. In 2017, the Department of Justice began investigating Ian’s possible involvement, but the process moved very slowly. So Michelle decided to take matters into her own hands and filed a civil lawsuit against both Ian and the police department that had handled the case.

 She argued that they had evidence of her innocence from the very beginning, but still put her behind bars where she spent almost 3 months. In 2019, during the civil case, Ian testified under oath and said he had nothing to do with the emails or the fake accounts. At the same time though, investigators with the Department of Justice were building a serious case against him, and they uncovered quite a few important details.

 First, they learned that even when Michelle was arrested the first time, detectives already had enough information to raise serious doubts about her involvement. Not only had they found no connection between her devices and the fake accounts, but they had also traced several emails back to the apartment where Ian and Angela lived.

 And yet, for some reason, they arrested Michelle. Anyway, as for Ian himself, investigators found plenty of evidence against him, too. Back in June 2016, before Michelle’s second arrest, Ian had used his personal email to contact one of the men from Craigslist. Writing as if he were Angela, he encouraged the man to come to her home and act out a sexual assault fantasy with her.

 But even though detectives had that information, they somehow ignored it and arrested Michelle anyway. That same day, Ian logged into Angela’s email account from his work computer, even though he later claimed he had never had access to any of her accounts. A few days later, he used his personal phone number to verify one of the consensual sexual assault ads that was meant to draw strange men to their home.

 And notably, the very next day, Ian deactivated that phone number and got a new one. A few days after that, Ian logged into one of the fake accounts used to send the threats from his work phone. Soon after, he began deleting some of the email accounts and changed his personal phone number again. Finally, investigators also disproved Ian’s alibi that he had supposedly been at work when several of the emails were sent.

 To support that claim, he had shown detectives a card listing his work shifts. But there was one problem. Ian had created that schedule himself, and there was no proof that he had actually been at work during those time periods. So, all of this information had already been available while Michelle was sitting in jail.

 But for some unclear reason, detectives simply ignored it. Now that the Department of Justice had put everything together, they had a strong case against Ian. They also had evidence that he had lied under oath. During Michelle’s civil case, he’d claimed he had never logged into Angela’s accounts. But investigators already knew that was not true.

 By 2021, they had finally gathered enough evidence against Ian, and he was charged with cyberstalking, perjury, and obstruction of justice. During the trial, Ian tried to convince the jury that he had nothing to do with any of it and that Angela had done everything behind his back. The prosecution, however, saw him as the creator of the entire scheme.

 They pointed to two obvious motives. Control over the condo he was about to lose and a way to discredit Michelle in case she ever decided to tell anyone about the sexual assault involving the man from Craigslist. In March 2023, the jury found Ian guilty and he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Notably, his attorney had tried to get the sentence reduced to 5 years, arguing that Ian had changed for the better.

 By that point, he had a new wife and a child. So, his attorney tried to present him as a decent family man. But the judge was not persuaded. As for Michelle, who had spent all those years fighting to see Ian held accountable, she did not get to watch the sentencing in person. But the reason was a positive one.

 On that very same day, she gave birth to her daughter. Even so, her representative read a letter in court that Michelle had written before the verdict. This man did not just want the condo. He wanted to ruin my entire life. He wanted a felony and sex offender registration on my record so I can never lead a normal life after he was done with me.

Never work with kids again, which he knew I had done in the past and loved. He wanted to make my worst nightmare come true. Every unexpected knock or ring at the door caused me to break down in panic, my whole body shaking uncontrollably. He set me up for another decade of abuse. I have had to give up on some of my dreams for my life.

 It’s also worth mentioning that in 2021, the city of Anaheim settled the civil case with Michelle, but the terms of the agreement, including how much money she received, were never made public. And so, the strange and incredibly tangled case finally came to an end. Ian and Angela both received their punishment while Michelle was able to get justice and eventually build a family of her own.
