After everything she’d sacrificed, I was genuinely thrilled for her. She had spent decades putting everyone else first, especially me. I wanted her to finally have something just for herself.

Then she invited Marcus to dinner.

I opened the door.

The moment I saw his face, I recognized him.

I knew that man from 11 years ago.

I knew his voice.

I knew the way he carried himself.

More importantly, I knew something about his past that my mother didn’t.

I smiled through dinner.

I waited until he left.

“The gold ones,” I called from the kitchen.

“You said the silver ones.”

“That was two earrings ago!”

Mom appeared in the doorway, holding another pair against her neck.

“These?”

“Mom, he’s coming for dinner, not conducting a jewelry inspection.”

“Easy for you to say.”

She glanced down at them.

“Too much?”

“Which ones do you actually want to wear?”

Her eyes drifted toward the gold pair she’d left on the counter.

I picked them up and offered them to her.

“Then wear those.”

At 53, my mother was nervous about a man.

That alone felt almost unbelievable.

She had always been the calmest person in any room.

But that night, she was nervous.

She rolled her eyes at me.

“When did you become my mother, Jean?”

“Around your third outfit change.”

She laughed.

The sound was still in the room when the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it.”

“Wait.”

Mom grabbed my arm.

“Be nice.”

“I’m always nice, Mom.”

“You once asked my dentist whether he had a personality outside of teeth.”

“He brought up plaque during lunch.”

The bell rang again.

Mom pushed me toward the door.

“Go!”

I was still smiling when I opened it.

Then I saw the man on the porch.

He was older than I remembered. His hair had grayed around the temples, and deeper lines framed his eyes.

But I knew that face.

Marcus’s polite smile faltered too.

He looked at me.

Then Mom.

“Jeannie?”

His voice erased the years between us.

“Ella’s Jean?”

My grip tightened on the doorknob.

“Marcus.”

Mom stepped up behind me and looked between us.

Marcus raised the bottle of wine he’d brought.

“Jeannie worked for me years ago.”

Mom laughed in disbelief.

“You’re kidding.”

“Small world,” Marcus said.

He walked inside.

Months later, I realized she had returned them.

That same week, I got the art supplies I’d been begging for.

After college, when I finally landed a good job, I tried to reverse that pattern.

“Take the trip.”

“That’s ridiculous money, Jean.”

“Then buy the dress, Mom.”

“I have dresses, dear.”

“Those are archaeological artifacts.”

She laughed.

Eventually, she traveled with friends.

She started painting again.

She joined a community volunteer group.

Then one evening, she casually mentioned a man named Marcus.

Within weeks, his name appeared on her phone almost as often as mine.

One night, Mom admitted with a laugh, “He makes me feel 25 again.”

I told her I couldn’t wait to meet him.

I meant it.

Until I opened that door.

Marcus was attentive without hovering.

During dinner, Mom coughed after swallowing too quickly, and he quietly moved her water closer without interrupting her story.

He remembered she hated mushrooms and shifted the serving dish away without drawing attention to it.

“So,” Mom said, pointing her fork at him, “tell Jean about the tomatoes.”

Marcus groaned.

“Absolutely not.”

“You should see them, Jean.”

“They’re recovering, Ella.”

“They’re leaning sideways.”

“Toward sunlight,” he corrected.

Mom shook her head.

“You’re still checking on them tonight, aren’t you?”

Marcus shrugged.

“They’re unsupervised. I finally got ours to stop collapsing.”

My fork froze halfway to my mouth.

Ours.

“My wife used to grow tomatoes,” Marcus added. “She made it look insultingly easy.”

I looked at Mom.

She smiled.

“Marcus inherited her confidence.”

“Unfortunately, not her competence,” he said.

They laughed.

I didn’t.

Suddenly, I wasn’t having dinner with my mother’s new boyfriend.

I was sitting across from someone from my past.

Back then, I worked part-time at a small downtown bookstore.

Marcus was my manager.

I was also dating a man named Tyler.

At the time, I would have called Tyler protective.

He chose restaurants because I “took forever.”

He picked movies because I “always picked weird ones.”

He corrected my clothes before parties.

If I missed one call, he called three more times.

I didn’t recognize it as controlling behavior.

I simply learned to say:

“Whatever you want.”

One afternoon, Marcus was rearranging the front display.

He held up two books.

“Which one?”

I shrugged.

“Whatever.”

He stayed still.

“Which one, Jeannie?”

“Either.”

“I didn’t ask which one wouldn’t upset civilization.”

I laughed.

He raised the books again.

“What do you want?”

I studied them.

“The blue one.”

“Great.”

He put it in the window.

It should have meant nothing.

But Marcus kept doing it.

Coffee orders.

Work schedules.

Display signs.

Music.

“What do you think?”

“What do you want?”

“Which do you prefer?”

Tiny questions.

They seemed insignificant.

But slowly, I realized almost nobody else asked me them.

One afternoon, Tyler came into the store and criticized my sweater.

I immediately apologized.

Marcus was shelving books nearby.

He didn’t look at Tyler.

He looked at me.

“Do you like the sweater, Jean?”

Tyler laughed.

“Apparently somebody has to.”

I looked down at myself.

“Yeah,” I said.

“I do.”

Tyler and I broke up three months later.

But there was someone else from those years I remembered even more clearly.

Marcus’s wife.

She drew ridiculous cartoons on his lunch bags.

Marcus taped his favorites beside the register.

Every Thursday, he left work at exactly five.

“Regional meeting,” someone teased once.

Marcus grabbed his coat.

“Dinner with my wife.”

“The meeting’s important, Marcus.”

“They’ll survive.”

Then one Thursday, he didn’t leave.

He sat in his office staring at his phone.

The next week, he barely spoke.

A month later, Marcus left the bookstore.

His wife was sick.

He was going home to care for her.

I never saw him again.

Eventually, I heard she had died.

And now, 11 years later, he was sitting at my mother’s dinner table.

I couldn’t stop wondering whether Mom understood what she was getting into.

Marcus stayed until just after nine.

Mom stood at the door smiling as his car backed away.

Then she closed it and turned to me.

“Well?”

I watched through the window until his taillights vanished.

Mom’s smile faded when she saw my expression.

“Mom, before you get any closer to him, there’s something you need to know.”

She said nothing.

So I told her about the bookstore.

Mom listened without interrupting.

Finally, I said what had weighed on me all evening.

“You’ve spent your whole life coming second, Mom.”

Her eyebrows tightened.

“To bills. To work. To Dad when he was still around. To me.”

I swallowed.

“I don’t want you spending the rest of your life competing with someone who isn’t even here.”

Mom didn’t respond.

Instead, she walked into the hallway and took her coat from the hook.

“Put your shoes on, Jean.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

She grabbed her keys.

“I could explain this, but you’d still think I’m making excuses for him.”

She met my eyes.

“There’s something you need to see.”

Mom drove about 15 minutes without explaining.

“Are you kidnapping me?”

“Yes.”

“Good to know.”

“You ask too many questions.”

“You raised me, Mom.”

That finally made her smile.

But she kept driving.

We turned into a community garden behind a small recreation center.

Most plots were dark, but strings of warm lights lined the main path.

Then I saw Marcus.

He was kneeling beside a tomato plant, carefully tying a stem to a wooden stake.

Mom lowered her window.

“You’re strangling it.”

Marcus looked up.

“I’m supporting it.”

“It’s leaning away from you.”

“Ungrateful plant,” he said.

I stared at Mom.

“You knew he’d be here?”

“I knew he’d probably be here.”

She parked.

Marcus brushed dirt from his knees as we approached.

His expression softened when he saw me.

“Ah.”

I folded my arms.

“That’s reassuring.”

Mom touched my elbow.

“Jean, look around.”

I did.

Small plaques marked several garden plots.

Some carried names.

Others had dates.

Marcus followed my gaze.

“This section belongs to a bereavement group.”

“Bereavement group?” I asked.

He nodded toward the tomatoes.

“My wife grew them every summer.”

His voice shifted slightly.

“After she died, I couldn’t even look at one without thinking about her.”

He paused.

“When I joined the group, they told us to plant something we’d have to keep alive long enough to see another season.”

“And you chose tomatoes?”

Mom snorted.

“Arrogance. He killed two batches.”

“One and a half,” Marcus corrected.

“Two.”

Marcus sighed.

“Your mother’s very supportive.”

I looked at Mom.

“You knew about his wife?”

“Of course I knew.”

“How much?”

Mom slipped her hands into her coat pockets.

“Enough to know I would’ve liked her.”

That stopped me.

All evening, I had assumed Mom was too infatuated to notice what I saw.

Instead, she had seen more.

Marcus stepped closer but kept space between us.

I looked directly at him.

“Do you still love her?”

“Yes.”

He answered immediately.

Marcus glanced toward the crooked tomato plant.

“She’s dead, Jeannie. Not erased.”

Then he looked at Mom.

“Loving your mother didn’t require me to stop loving the woman who taught me how.”

I frowned.

“What does that even mean?”

Marcus rubbed dirt from his thumb.

“You remember how I used to ask what you wanted at the bookstore?”

I nodded.

He gave a faint smile.

“That wasn’t originally my wisdom.”

I stared at him.

“My wife used to get furious with me because I planned everything. Restaurants. Vacations. Weekends.”

He shook his head.

“I thought taking care of somebody meant handling things for them.”

His expression grew serious.

“One night, my wife finally said, ‘Marcus, stop loving me like a project. Ask.’”

Something shifted inside me.

“Years later, I watched you say ‘whatever’ to every question anyone asked you.”

He looked at me.

“I recognized it.”

I remembered the blue book.

The sweater.

Those tiny questions.

For years, I thought Marcus had simply taught me to have an opinion.

Now I understood he had learned that lesson from someone else.

I turned to my mother.

“I’m not dating the man he was before her.”

Mom glanced toward Marcus.

“I’m dating the man he became.”

Marcus cleared his throat.

“This is becoming alarmingly positive.”

I laughed before I could stop myself.

Mom took my hand.

“I know why you were worried.”

“I thought I was protecting you, Mom.”

“I know, sweetheart.”

She squeezed my fingers.

“You’ve been doing a lot of that lately.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“The trips you keep trying to buy me.”

I opened my mouth.

“The classes. The clothes. Pushing me to date.”

“Mom, I just want you to have things after everything you gave up.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“But you don’t owe me a happy ending, Jean.”

For years, I had tried to settle a debt Mom had never created.

Every sacrifice.

Every extra shift.

Every pair of boots she returned so I could have something instead.

Every time she claimed she was fine when she wasn’t.

“You gave up so much for me, Mom.”

“And I’d do it again.”

She smiled.

“But my life isn’t your debt.”

That hit harder than I expected.

I realized I’d spent years trying to repay something she never asked me to repay.

Mom sacrificed because she loved me.

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

She squeezed my hand.

Then she smiled toward Marcus.

“And for the record, I’m not coming second.”

“No?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

Then she smiled.

“We’re meeting in the middle, that’s all.”

Marcus suddenly brightened.

“Speaking of accomplishments…”

He carefully twisted a tiny tomato from the vine and offered it to Mom.

It was small, crooked, and mostly orange.

Mom stared at it.

“That’s pathetic.”

“I raised that.”

“You interfered with nature until it surrendered, Marcus.”

“I don’t need this hostility.”

I laughed so hard I wiped my eyes.

Marcus picked up a small hand shovel and tossed it toward me.

I barely caught it.

“What am I supposed to do with this?”

He pointed to an empty strip of soil beside Mom’s volunteer plot.

“Plant something.”

“What?”

“Something you’d like to see later.”

I looked at the empty soil.

Mom was already kneeling beside it.

“Anything?”

“Within reason,” Marcus said.

“Ella vetoed my watermelon proposal.”

“You had six square feet.”

“Dream killer.”

Mom handed me a seed packet from the gardening box.

I read the label.

“Will these survive neglect?”

“Plastic survives neglect,” Marcus said.

Mom nudged him aside.

“Don’t listen to him. He murdered basil.”

“Allegedly!”

I crouched beside her.

For once, I wasn’t thinking about what Mom sacrificed 20 years ago.

Marcus wasn’t focused on what he lost 11 years ago.

And Mom wasn’t waiting for permission to enjoy whatever years lay ahead.

I pressed a seed into the dark soil.

Mom covered another beside mine.

Marcus immediately began explaining how much water they needed.

“Are you sure?” I asked.

“No.”

Mom laughed.

“At least he’s learning.”
