When we first met, I gave him a card with the building manager’s number, emergency maintenance details, recycling schedule, and quiet-hour rules.

He thanked me sincerely.

I remember thinking:

This one will be easy.

The tea bags started during his second month.

The first one appeared on my balcony one wet November morning.

Still damp.

Breakfast tea.

I assumed it was an accident.

Something tossed without thinking.

I picked it up and threw it away.

One morning, I hung two white towels outside.

He sounded sincere.

So I wanted to believe Daniel was simply careless.

A tea bag dropped directly onto the pale cushion of my balcony chair.

I watched it land.

I waited to see whether the stain would spread.

It did.

That evening, I tried cleaning the cushion cover.

He had decided I was harmless.

The one who would keep asking nicely until she finally gave up.

And, more importantly, I realized he wanted me angry.

He wanted me pounding on his door.

Giving him a story he could later tell about the unstable woman downstairs who lost her mind over tea bags.

So I didn’t.

I returned to my apartment.

I checked the management company’s complaint procedure.

Over the previous months, I had photographed several of the tea bags.

The stained towel.

The ruined cushion.

The bag that appeared the morning after Daniel promised he would stop.

Seven photographs total.

I wrote down dates and approximate times for the incidents I clearly remembered.

Then I drafted a formal complaint.

Three pages.

Chronological.

Calm.

No emotional language.

I explained what had happened.

Referenced the relevant lease provisions.

Included photographs.

And documented both attempts I had made to resolve the issue directly.

It was an excellent letter.

The sort of letter that doesn’t need anger because the facts are already doing the work.

I submitted it Tuesday evening.

Then I set my alarm.

The next morning, I sat on my balcony before seven.

Warm coat.

Phone beside me.

At 7:06, I heard Daniel’s balcony door open.

I stayed still.

It was wonderful.

That was all I wanted.

I put the note in his mailbox.

He never replied.

And the tea bags never returned.

That could have been the end of the story.

But apartment buildings are not single transactions.

And people are usually more complicated than the worst thing they have done.

Six weeks later, Mrs. Okafor from 2C came to visit me.

She mentioned Daniel.

“He helped me carry groceries last week,” she said. “Three trips upstairs.”

“That was kind.”

“He looked exhausted.”

Then she told me his mother was seriously ill.

Daniel had moved into the building specifically to be closer to her.

He visited her every day.

I sat quietly after Mrs. Okafor left.

None of that excused the tea bags.

Someone going through a hard time does not gain the right to ruin someone else’s property.

But context can change how you understand behavior without changing whether the behavior was wrong.

So the following Sunday, I knocked on Daniel’s door.

He looked thinner.

Tired in a way I recognized immediately.

“I heard about your mother,” I said. “I’m sorry.”

He nodded.

“She’s in residential care now.”

He paused.

“She doesn’t always recognize me.”

I knew that kind of grief.

Years earlier, I had watched my own mother disappear in similar pieces.

“I’m sorry,” I said again.

Then Daniel looked down.

“The tea bags…”

I waited.

“I wasn’t thinking.”

He shook his head.

“That’s not an excuse.”

“No.”

“But I understand it differently now.”

He looked at me.

Then he mentioned the complaint.

“I know you filed it.”

“And you left me a note saying I should have talked to you.”

His face tightened slightly.

“I was angry when I wrote that.”

“I did talk to you.”

“I know.”

He rubbed the back of his neck.

“My mother had gotten worse that week.”

He sighed.

“I shouldn’t have written the note.”

We stood there awkwardly.

Then I said,

“I have some packages downstairs for you.”

He looked surprised.

“I can bring them up later, if that helps.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because the complaint was about tea bags.”

I paused.

“This is about being neighbors.”

He stared at me for a second.

Then something softened in his expression.

“I’d appreciate that.”

Before I left, he called after me.

“Mrs. Collier.”

I turned.

“I’m sorry about the towel.”

“And the cushion.”

“Yes.”

“You should have replaced them.”

“I know.”

He asked how much they cost.

Then he disappeared into his apartment and returned with cash.

The exact amount.

“I looked it up after the management letter,” he admitted.

I took it.

“You should have done that earlier.”

“Yes.”

“But doing it now still matters.”

That afternoon, I carried his packages upstairs.

His apartment looked unfinished.

Pictures still leaning against walls.

Books still boxed.

A home waiting to begin.

“You haven’t settled in,” I said.

“I kept thinking I’d wait until things got better.”

“Until your mother improved.”

He nodded.

I looked at the boxes.

“Put up the pictures.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

“Because waiting for the right moment to start living can become the most expensive waiting of all.”

He didn’t answer.

But I noticed later that the pictures went up.

Spring arrived.

No more tea bags.

Daniel began saying hello in the lift.

Then small conversations followed.

He started helping Mrs. Okafor with her groceries regularly.

In April, I found a package outside my door.

Inside was a new cushion cover.

Grey-blue.

Not an exact match for my chair.

But close.

There was a note.

I still owe you a towel.

Daniel’s mother died in June.

The next morning, he knocked on my door.

Mrs. Okafor had apparently told him he could.

I made tea.

He sat at the same kitchen table where I had once spread photographs, lease clauses, and complaint paperwork.

He didn’t talk much at first.

Eventually, he told me about his mother before she became ill.

The things she loved.

The way she always called on Sundays.

The tea she ordered from one particular shop.

“She called me last Sunday,” he said.

“She didn’t know who I was.”

His voice tightened.

“But she still asked whether I was okay.”

I thought about that.

“That was still her.”

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

After a while, Daniel said,

“You didn’t have to let me in.”

“I’ve lived here eleven years,” I replied. “What happens between neighbors in the middle matters.”

He looked at his tea.

“I behaved badly.”

“Yes.”

“I was careless first. Then rude.”

“Yes.”

“You were completely right.”

“Yes.”

He almost smiled.

“And yet you still brought me my packages.”

“Because being right about one thing doesn’t mean every other part of a relationship has to disappear.”

He looked at me.

“The complaint was about tea bags.”

I continued.

“The packages were about being neighbors.”

“They are separate.”

Daniel was quiet.

“Most people would hold a grudge.”

“Grudges are expensive.”

I smiled.

“They cost more than towels.”

That made him laugh.

A real laugh.

Later that summer, Daniel moved out.

Without his mother nearby, he no longer needed to live in the building.

He found a smaller place closer to work.

“A place I can actually settle into,” he told me.

I knew he remembered what I had said.

I helped carry a lamp and two bags of bedding down to the moving van.

At the curb, he held out his hand.

I shook it.

“The next person in 4B,” he said. “Warn them about the woman downstairs.”

“I’ll tell them she’s reasonable.”

I paused.

“As long as they are.”

He laughed and drove away.

There is someone new in 4B now.

A little overwhelmed.

I gave her the same card I give everyone.

Maintenance numbers.

Recycling schedule.

Building rules.

She has herbs growing on her balcony.

Nothing has ever come over the railing.

And every morning, I sit outside with my coffee.

My slightly mismatched cushion.

My peace.

People sometimes think being reasonable means accepting everything.

It doesn’t.

Being reasonable also means knowing exactly where your limit is.

When someone crosses it, speak to them first.

Give them the opportunity to behave well.

Most people will.

If they don’t, document what happens.

Read your lease.

Know your rights.

Use the systems that already exist.

And after the issue is resolved, remember something else.

You don’t have to turn one grievance into a permanent judgment of another human being.

Daniel was wrong about the tea bags.

He was also a son watching his mother disappear.

Both things were true.

The complaint dealt with one.

Compassion dealt with the other.

Those truths never needed to cancel each other out.

The new cushion still doesn’t perfectly match my chair.

I think I prefer it that way.

Daniel never did replace the towel.

That’s all right.

Some things are worth writing off.

The important things—

my balcony,
